Yes, perfect casting. Diana Quick as well. Someone I feel sorry for is Jane Asher, she had to play a character which is so far removed from natural self. Phoebe Nicholls was so believable. A totally stellar cast.

Jeremy Irons recorded an audiobook of Brideshead Revisited, and the only thing in it that I'm not fond of is the scratchy childish voice he used for Sebastian-- I think Andrews' urbane smirking fits much better. And Irons is a wonderful Charles Ryder. You sense that longing for love behind his somewhat cold exterior, and his rare smiles have such impact.
Several years ago, I found myself the only late lunch diner - except for one other person, in one of my favorite West Village restaurants. I ordered lunch - just in time, before the 4PM cut-off, then looked over at the other diner, there. It was Jeremy Irons, reading a book, or - pretending to, terrified perhaps, that I might start a conversation with him. But, no...Villagers do not do this. Instead, when he glanced up and our eyes met, I nodded, slightly - and busied myself with my journal. He visibly relaxed, and went on reading, eating his lunch. Thank goodness, the man was afforded some peace for a time. I have celebs in the family, and know how difficult it is sometimes, to do the simplest things, try and go places without being accosted. Fame, is often inconvenient.
In Britain the golden rule is, if you ever see a celebrity, don't let on that you recognise them. Don't look at them and certainly don't go up and talk to them.

No mention of it here but the producers must surely have known that Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews had been cast together in a previous period drama. They played close friends Frank Tregear and Lord Silverbridge in Simon Raven's 1974 BBC adaptation of The Pallisers.

Sebastian was underwritten in the novel, and so I think of Anthony Andrews as co-creator of this character with Waugh. If Jeremy Irons played Sebastian, we'd have a completely different character. (For what that character might have been like, listen to Irons's brilliant reading of the audiobook. Andrews' Sebastian is virile by comparison, and in my mind, that much more compelling and enchanting.)
Anthony and Jeremy were great. I recommend you watch Margin Call to see what I think is Jeremy's best performance. Did Anthony get an Emmy for playing Sebastian Flyte?

Sebastian only really figures in the lighter first half, with the superficial but glamorous theme of the aristocracy. The real messages of the novel are in the darker second half; love, faith, redemption and the hard choices necessary.

Saw Irons a couple of years ago in a Long Day's Journey Into Night. The man has forgotten how to be a stage actor. As someone else suggested here, he has spent the majority of his career being either a villain or a pratt.

Andrews was nominated for an Emmy. He won BAFTA and Golden Globe Best Actors for Sebastian. (Sorry for the reply three years late.)
