It's not just the self-deprecation. It's the fact that what he was saying not only resonated with the white people in the audience, but the black folk too. From the sound of it, there were a lot of people of "African Persuasion" there. You can hear them hooting it up. You know why? Because he was speaking from the perspective of actual knowledge. He wasn't pulling this stuff out of his backside. Black folks don't want you to bring it if it's not authentic. His story came from experience and everyone recognized it.
As a black-American every thing Bill said was nothing but facts I specifically have a desire to buy new clothes and shoes like 7 or 8 days ago I just bought a pair of all star converse Chuck Taylors black and white
I walked into the wrong neighborhood in Baltimore in the early 90's and thankfully I was running and in great shape at the time because it was needed.

Same, but a decade later on. I got out of the car (dumb), my ride took off ( ha ha ) and was immediately approached by a man wielding a freshly stolen car stereo with wires dangling. He literally called it a "pull out" stereo 😂 (at the time, every stereo was a pullout if forced).
2 decades later I watched The Wire and recognized that very corner.

Haarlem is a city in The Netherlands… New York was a Dutch colony so a lot of Dutch names connected to NY…so Harlem
New York was literally called "New Amsterdam" at one point of its history. But that was just Manhattan. Present day Harlem was called "New Haarlem" during those times.

Harlem is one of the two oldest predominantly Black neighborhoods in NYC. Harlem is located in the boro of Manhattan, while Bed-Stuy, the other oldest Black neighborhood, is in Brooklyn.

On the island of Manhattan (1 borough in NYC) has China town, the East Village, and a lot of artsy neighborhoods. Mid town, is where a lot of the television, tourist, and financial sector, and then on the north side Harlem starts around 100th street, with the Bronx across the East river to the east, and Fort Lee NJ across the Hudson on the west side. Keep going north about 90 minutes to the Catskills, Poughkeepsie, and the Capital of NY, Albany, is just passed that.

Harlem is NOT one of the 5 boroughs of New York City. It is a subdivision of Manhattan which IS one of the boroughs, located on Manhattan Island.
But it's a well known subdivision.
And it's a poorer community.
And it's still populated by mostly black Americans.
Like East Detroit or South Chicago.

I totally get her aversion. Some people just have that reaction to other people's mannerisms and accents. I struggle hard with American southern accents. It's nails on a chalkboard to me. I'm trying to get better, but the struggle is real.
Same. Until I saw a video of a linguist explaining that because the southern colonies had SO many British loyalists that they held on to the accent the longest. It just...de or evolved a little.
@@jonathanaliff6121 Yeah, if I remember correctly, it's mostly influenced by far-northern English accents. Kind of from those regions where you can't quite tell if they're English, Scottish, or recently had a stroke. 😉
You guys are obviously intelligent enough to get everything he's talking about, but I would imagine this one is harder for international audiences to completely connect to as it takes a certain degree of American culture and American race relations to bridge the gap.
