    One of your videos saved me, from searching forever what the problem is. I did fight with my motorcycle nearly 10 years and could not figure out what was wrong.
    Everytime i did drive it, it hang at 6000 rpm. The higher the load the worse it did get. The mixture seemed to be to fat. But it cant be, because everything is original.
    i cleaned 5 times the carbs myself. 4 times let it do it from professional shops. Put many new parts in them. Leak tested the whole inlets. Tested compression. Tested valve lash. Tested camshaft timings. Measured the ignition parts with multimeter. New original airfilter. Three different exhaust, because the og one was rotted. Nothing did help.
    Then i saw a video, where your drag and drive was on the dyno and you talked about that you take out timing, before your engine hits the revlimiter. So that it does not hit as hard. And thats why your AFR was at that spot fat. IT HIT my like a freight train. The CDI lost the ignition curve from the factory and was at emergency operation. Since you can't test the ignition timing with a strobe light, because the whole thing would spray oil everywhere, i could never test that. Particularly not at high rpm's. I bought another CDI... Now it works.

    • @Rudimaentaer
      @Rudimaentaer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ghost.of.aleksz.salad. The Problem is that the exhaust has more flow then the og one and should not cause the mixture to get fatter. It should go leaner.
      I built myself a AFR meter with Innovatec parts to test it in a few days. Funny thing is with the og exhaust those Motorcycles run, according to statement of a tuner, near 12. So they run pretty fat from the factory.
      And many exhausts legal for my country street use make it worse. So i did let a professional build me one. Pretty expensiv.
      But she did run way better then any other i drove before. But still hang on 6000rpm.
      We will see in a few days if the AFR goes more to the preferred AFR 12,94 aka Lambda 0,88 for natural aspirated engines.
      If not, there are still the Dynojet (stage 1) kits i have experience with. I also will make a dyno run down the line. But in my country nearly no one makes carb tuning anymore.

    Hey mate, Design engineer here from Australia, I have done something similar as your first idea however i used a BRZ drive by wire throttle body (70mm) in the intake manifold that actually ran off a DBW potentiometer on the throttle pedal along side the cable throttle. This added the redundancy required (as they use the twin feedbacks) so it wouldn't get stuck open as they have a fail safe (closed). The boost control was then programmed into the DBW map with thresholds.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was thinking similar. He could have used a third throttle body as an electronic BOV, since that's what the Boostgates are. That way he would have the failsafe modes available.

    G’day from Australia Steve! I am a retired Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. Licenced on a heap of Boeing Aircraft. I love your Channel!
    Go and search Pratt & Whitney JT9D Bleed Sysyems. The original engine would not run as it had too much air pushing through the Compressor (a Turbo Jet Engine is just a big “Turbo”). So P&W had to build Bleed systems to make it run. Start Bleeds, Surge Bleeds, Reverse Actuated Bleeds, etc. Same problem you are having. These are very old Engines from the ‘60’s. But very reliable (even though the leaked oil everywhere! Ha!). I have learned a stack from you, so go have a read & you may uncover info that will take your knowledge up a few notches as well. Just to keep the system simple:
    1 keep wastegates on the turbo(keeps a free flowing exhaust vs capped off)
    2 keep vacuum operated blow off valves( when coming off a pull, vacuum operates the blowoffs and dumps turbo pressure)
    3 use two Boostgates before the throttle bodies.( creates a controlled boost leak when you want it and stay seperate from throttle action and blow off action)
    This allows you to focus on controlling your targeted boost pressure using the Boostgate thus creating a controlled boost leak and stop surging.

    • @dahorseman2654
      @dahorseman2654 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They don’t use a vacuum operated blow off valve. Co2 commands waste gate to shut, and removal allows to open. Adding in extra gates/blow offs always allow an extra boost leak. The whole point of using 2 gates pre TB is because of the resolution of a large single one. His issue is the resolution, and ability of the system to self regulate. It builds, commands to relieve, and instantly has to build again to catch up. It’s a constant start stop. Using two smaller E gates allow finer control of that valve to catch up quicker.

    • @halofreak1990
      @halofreak1990 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dahorseman2654 couldn't this also be a limit of the CO2 gates compared to the electronic units? IIRC, Rob Dahm uses electronic gates on his 3- and 4-rotor, because he, too, had boost surge, and the e-gates allow for much more fine-grained control of the boost pressure, being that they can go to any position virtually instantaneously

    Hi Steve they make less hp because using the exhaust to generate drive pressure necessitates the engine experience backpressure to generate that drive pressure on the turbine when the wastegate is closed to spin up the turbine. So when you generate boost, you use backpressure to do so, which induces pumping losses on the engine. If you're not using that boost and simply venting it, you will make less HP measured at the wheels even though you're burning the same amount of fuel because the engine has to pump harder to remove exhaust gasses due to the restriction imposed by the turbine wheel which is required to make the turbine drive pressure to drive the compressor. So you never want to make more boost than you need. Huge fan and happy I can help in some way.

    I was gonna say they should bolt right where the old BOV went. Nice! You could also have used one large gat with tubes from each intake tube connecting to it in a Y. That would have been much more complicated and harder to package though. My theory of these Boostgates was to basically treat them like mini throttle bodies that bleed off extra boost as needed. I had thought a lot about how it would work to use them for boost control alone. My basic issues were yes it would essentially create a big boost leak, causing higher turbo RPM for less power, and also heating all the air and generating more heat and exhaust pressure. Glad I was making sense. Thanks for the informative video!

    Steve, before I retired I had the job of tuning a huge centrifugal air pump (6 ft in diameter) this was all automated and included several PID algorithms to produce limited heat and a variable output. As I remember we controlled the incoming air (with a butterfly valve) so as to prevent the wheel from filling the individual buckets with air. If the buckets are full and the blades are forced to slip due to limiting the output this is a heat source. We did have a VFD on the motor as well and used blowoff valves to provide cold air without an after-cooler. I think your engineering and design is going to prove out for the best. Keep us informed on your tuning profile!!

This is the route that all parents need to teach their kids. Always learn, be willing to make mistakes and own the mistake when it happens. Thank You and I hope you always get what you are after in life.

    This is a very humble thing you are doing. Love to see it. I don't know anything about the complexities of this set up, maybe not the basics either...
    I guess it's just good to show people that as much as you know, it's always a good thing to go and talk to other people and see what they think and can input to the problem at hand.
    Also, as a teacher, I tell kids all the time that you never stop learning. An openness to more learning is a good thing.

    Always be open to new ideas! Many years ago I was modding a 4.3L Chevy V8 for my Monza. Pro engine builders told me the combination of cam, carb, intake, heads, etc. simply wouldn't run at all or not run very well if it DID run! Carb tuning was kinda tricky (without going into details) but not only DID it run, it ran like a raped ape! Engine went 100,000 miles before I took it out to put a built 350 in the car. All it did was a little stem seal (I think) smoke. I still have it in my "shop" and plan to tear it down and inspect it one of these days... 🤔

    Might look to coming up with a strategy to open the blow offs when the throttles close to relieve the boost pressure surge and retain compressor speed, so boost can come back in quicker, like if y’all had to pedal it.

    I love the tech going on here. The only issue I can foresee is having an inrush of air after the E Gate closes causing a huge spike in boost pressure. Hopefully the PID / boost control strategy is quick enough to flatten the line. Or you can gradually / linearly close the E Gate based on RPM so that your Wastegates don’t have to do all of the work. Thanks for the great content Steve. Big fan from Ontario
