Me a 13 year old MTB kid who spends his days before and after school riding at the local trails. One of the bike shops that I have in my town I love it. The people there are so nice and they know all the local kids. One of them is about 60 and shredding he brought a massive piece of land like a big tree covered mountain, him and the other workers made a massive bike park all hand made. One of the best bike parks I’ve seen from the 30ft gaps to the 3ft drops everything there is amazing and so fun to ride. Matt is definitely one of the coolest people ik and the fact he built that for us is amazing he just knows all us so well. We have 2 groups… my group started in Jan 2023 and it’s about 5-7 people. The second group is about 10-12 kids most of them are pretty chill and they’ve been around since 2019. I’ve been seeing a group of new kids starting to ride on some old crappy bikes and they make it work I love it! So I hope to be seeing them become a group!! I love my biking community ❤❤

Great video Matty. I’m a 73 y/o mtn bike rider in Simi Valley, CA. I’ve cycled all my life but now at my age, 73, I’ve slowed down, and bought a Specialized Turbo Levo eBike. So happy that I can still climb with our sons, but fast descents are something I shy away from being I can’t risk a nasty fall and impending injury. I rode several paths around Windsor CO. this last summer. Had a blast for 4 days. Stay well. Keep on cranking and making great content. Cheers.

If anyone rides just for approval from the others, (s)he will never get good at riding. When someone rides just because (s)he can't get enough of it, then maybe at some point there will come time that the person will have good reason to compete. I've never met anyone who was really god at something and was ass to the beginners of that thing. Those bike shop people who get frustrated by beginers are, most of the time, people who wanted to have racer career, but failed spectacularly at it, because they forgot to have fun while riding.

Thank you Matty 💛 I love your love for this sport, and I’m so glad your poor bike shop experience didn’t deter you from continuing your journey. I had a similar experience, while trying to purchase my first proper MTB, and it’s disheartening. It’s such a fantastic sport, and I’m always so enthused when a friend tells me they’ve bought a bike, because I want to take them on all of the trails! If you ever find yourself in Northeast Ohio, let me know, I’d love to ride with you and learn from you. Keep shredding 🤙🏼🚲

    Stick with it!
That's the hardest part.....and all the sudden you are making climbs, longer laps and meeting more people just like you.
And you called it perfect as we have all been to a bike shop where they could care less about you if you are not spending thousands and it should never be that way.
We all started small and now my family bike cave has twelve amazing bikes, for any adventure that may arise, and most are Trek bikes because they sold me my very first 830 hardtail. Twenty some odd years ago, and my latest addition a 9.9 rail. Treat the new guys well and they will return, again and again. Thanks for showing so many people the woods and maybe one day we can ride a lap, you might be able to catch little man!

It’s nice seeing these reactions to the pinkbike video. I’m not mad at what was probably just a flippant comment, but it’s absolutely endemic in all forms of biking. Biking (all forms even though we don’t all agree) has some of the coolest people around but all it takes is one experience with a stuck up rider/shop employee to turn someone new away.
Glad to see this and hear the story! Keep sharing the fun!

Everyone starts as a beginner, very few people become a pro. My son is young and is still very impressionable, and occasionally people try to give him MTB advice based on what they believe is "the one and only correct way". I always have to tell him there are "no rules" and very few "correct" ways to do things other than to do what he feels comfortable with and to have fun. This is true for everyone, but the beginners, being the least experienced, are the most impressionable to the bad advice. Nice work on the progression in 3 years. 👍

That's good advice you're giving your son. Aside from tips and advice, the only things I told him were to have fun, be safe, and don't ride anything you don't wanna ride. He was 10 when we got into MTB, and it didn't take take long before we were hitting up different bike parks every weekend (Highland, Killington, Thunder and Mountain Creek). He's 18 now and he rips, a lot better than me cause I'm 42 ... I get nervous watching him do the stuff he does, but I don't wanna hold him back so I don't say much. Great sport to do with your kids!

💯💯💯 I agree, appealing to beginners and supporting their education is the way to grow the sport.
If someone buys the wrong thing, gets hurt, it breaks, it's unsuitable for their needs, their bike journey likely ends. If they can find out information before they buy. Learn what to expect from a bike shop. Know that they can go to the next shop, if one disrespects them or doesn't meet their needs.
And teaching them when interacting in bike spaces, instead of judging and criticism.

You've progressed a ton Matty and I'm extremely pleased to see that. I too got back into riding during the lockdown. Started with a used Specialized Expedition but it was the Roscoe that really got me hooked. Graduated to Giant Trance full sus and now rocking a deeply price discounted Trek Fuel EXe. I managed to make friends with an older experienced MTBer 2+ years ago. He's helped me ton and I try to pay it forward whenever a noob asks questions of me. My neighborhood Trek store has always been good to me as well. Keep the rubber side down and enjoy the fun.

Hey Matty you touched on a couple topics that are really important to me. I grew up in a very poor area. I was a little more fortunate and was able to start sports like mountain biking at a pretty young age. It was a huge deal getting that first bike…in those days no suspension so that kept things more reasonable. But no other kids near me could afford it. I would love to see people from all financial backgrounds be able to experience the joy that mountain biking brings. A snowboarder from my era started a foundation Hoods to Woods but I never heard of something like this for mountain biking. I work at a very large sporting goods company now and they talk about it but as an engineer I have no input. Hopefully something comes around. Also it doesn’t matter how good you are. Just go out and ride and have fun. I’ve enjoyed the vids I’ve seen on your channel so far. Keep on!

Loved watching your vids when covid hit. I was in a similar place in my mtb career as you and I went to buy a Farley at the local dealer and they wouldn’t give me the time of day. Got pissed and drove to another shop and left with a new Giant fat bike for winter. Turned out to be the best thing I’ve ever bought. Winter trails here are good. The fatbiking is insane. The next summer I bought a full suspension Trek from a dealer four hours away to avoid the local BS. Now I’m broke but happy. Might have to sell the kids.

I've been watching your progress and it's great. It's honestly really inspiring. I'm getting into it to get in shape and also to go fast. Touching grass has helped me a lot. And yeah, gatekeeping is in like EVERY hobby or sport. I collect vinyl records and there's always that ONE guy that's like "you can't appreciate this unless you either have your dad's pristine turntable he's had since 75 or a 2000 dollar system". It's aggravating. I'm doing what I can on a Marlin 5 until I can get the funds for a Roscoe or Fuel EX (also a Trek guy) and the Trek store in Lawrence, KS has been nothing but supportive. Even when I couldn't finish a trail and ended up puking for five solid minutes. They were really supportive. So yeah. Keep it up man!

Great vid man. Its funny in 2020 as well i got my first mountain bike when gyms closed. I too went with a Trek at the time and loved it still to this day they are my bike shop for repairs that i can’t handle. I have been lucky with getting into this sport and meeting some great people along the way helping me to push myself and progress. It funny to go back and watch the videos of tiny things that scared you and now i look at most features and think ya i can handle that. The progression is addictive for sure. I post all my mtb stuff on RI MTB. I recently had a bad crash jumping and broke my wrist, collarbone i had surgery on both last week and am on the mend i will be back bigger and better come spring 🤘

It was through watching people like you, pleasant and approachable, that I was able to figure out what type of bike I should consider. It was going to be a full-sus until I remembered.... "I'm not the crazy 18 year old I once was..."
My goal was to get into bikepacking. Hardtail it was. Between you and "Hardtail Party" for bike break-downs, and Ryan VanDuzer and a few others in that world, I found my Marin Pine Mountain 1 and couldn't be happier.

Those gently rolling trails in your video look like so much fun! That's MY type of riding, and I currently ride a Trek XC hardtail. I'm no spring chicken, so will probably always be somewhat of a beginner. But I have just as much fun riding easy trails as the hardcore riders do shredding those technical black diamond trails. How bike shops treat their customers goes a long way towards growing the sport. A long time ago I had a cheap mountain bike that I got for free through some kind of a promotional offer. When it needed some work done on it, I took it to the nearest bike shop, which was a famous but super-snooty high-end shop. After ignoring me for half an hour, the guy finally looked down his nose at my bike and said, "We don't waste our time working on crappy bikes like that." And then tried to talk me into buying one of their expensive bikes. So I left and went to a small mom-n-pop bike shop near the local college. I told them about my experience at the snooty place. The guy said, "It doesn't matter how fancy or expensive your bike is, what matters is that you're having fun on it. It's a good bike because it got you into the sport of mountain biking! When you're ready for another bike, you'll know it. And if you instead decide to ride this bike for the rest of your life, that's okay. As long as you're having FUN, that's all that matters in the end. Mountain biking is about having fun, not impressing other people."

Fantastic messaging fam, I think many of us have unfortunately had similar experiences starting out in cycling and mountain biking. The wrong shop with not inclusive vibes is bad for the sport. Which is bad for business. Fortunately being armature mountain bikers, many are wired to over come challenges big and small, until we find the solution that works for us, and keep getting better. Sorry to hear that you didn’t like the Status! I bought one myself in spring 2021 and researching it directed me to your videos. Hopefully paying 3K for a bike brought you more than just one subscriber, but if not, I’m happy to keep watching your videos! 😆

I actually loved the status! And it’s definitely worth the money. It just didn’t fit my riding style. I found out that I’m more of a mid travel full suspension rider and I love hardtails

Caught an earlier video of yours, then watched this one today. Really like your style of presenting, new sub for you my friend. Also, we got Marlin 6's for our kids. Those bikes were the reason that my wife and I got back into biking. We posted a video of us surprising the kids with the Treks. If you want to watch it, it is 1x Bikes Episode 2 leave a comment if you enjoy it. I look forward to your next video.

I was pretty sure when I clicked on this video that it was a response to PB (I won't even type the name any more). I think your take is spot on! If I only ever saw Danny MacAskill, the GCN guys or Remy and Yo riding the stuff they ride, I might have thought, "NOPE! I Can't do that. Guess MTB isn't for me, and subsequently never have gotten into mtb. The fact that you can go to TH-cam and see REAL people doing this with varying levels of ability, success and progression makes it seem more attainable for some, I'm sure. (No shade to Remy and Yoann or any super amazing riders! I love watching them hit huge stuff and talk about their own progression and admit to the mental struggles that we ALL face in this sport. But if "The Pros" and the downhill race lunatics were the only thing you ever saw, it could be a bar that was set too high for regular people to try...

Bad or good get together enjoy the sport, learn and improve. But practice makes better.
    You definitely did that.
If your back can handle a hardtail that's great, mine can't, so I will have to work out more.
    4:24 That was scary
I completely agree, ride the bike you want, ride where you want.

I enjoy your videos. I started riding in 2018 after being labeled Pre Diabetic. I researched bikes for a month and decided I wanted a Trek Roscoe. Could not find one anywhere so I got the Giant Fathom 1. I rode every chance I got. A guy from church showed me the best trails in the area. For the longest time I didn't want to try a full suspension bc I thought I may like it and they were too expensive. I'm with ya on the beginner being awesome, they have to be pretty gutsy to try stuff that veterans can do easily. Now I have the full suspension, but in aluminum! Sorry, not paying the extra for carbon...

I like this channel, for anyone new I recommend wearing a helmet is very key. I started riding mtb 5 years ago after nearly a 20 year gap of not riding anything. My first ride I thought I didn’t need a helmet went over the bars and told myself yup definitely need a helmet. Get one where it’s comfortable for you so you don’t even feel like your wearing it. It saved me many times here in Florida. Just like Matty said Trek treated me right too that’s why I went with a Marlin after watching a few of your videos got me wanting a roscoe lol. Maybe one day!

Honestly I've watched some pro riders doing some amazing stuff, but I really don't like their content. What you do is engaging because your videos share the experience of riding a bike, owning a bike, basically being a person on a bike. The stuff the Pinkbike guys approve of might as well be someone flying the space shuttle, that's about how relatable it is to 95% of the people out there who ride for the fun of it. I was one of those 100 people, I was getting back into bikes as you were starting, so your content was great for me as I was shopping for a new bike. I went with the Fathom, though, you'll have to forgive the Giant guy...:) Keep doing what you do, what you do works because you seem like a genuine and positive person that's easy to root for.

Nice story. I started in bmx in the early 80's. Bike shops back then would blow me off being a young black kid because they figured I couldn't afford these kinds of bikes. Once I found a shop that respected me, I stuck with them. When I turned to mtn bikes in the late 80's, I had the same issue until I went to a shop that sold Specialized bikes. Bought my first stumpjumper in 89. Rode Specialized until the cost for value wasn’t there anymore. I then bought my dream brand Intense and will stay with them until otherwise changes to my opinion.

I've been riding a little over a year. I love to watch Redbull Rampage. But at 66, I know I'm not doing that. How-to videos are helpful. But, I learn far more from less experienced riders because they talk about the things I'm facing. The Pink Bike thing was not well thought out. I bet he wishes he hadn't said that. I think it's great that anyone can publish content. Not too worried about an overabundance of content. Anyway, thanks for another great video. Very inspiring.

As a late returner to the sport after starting in the early 90s and giving up, it’s so great to see your videos, it helps folks (including me) feel included and welcome in the sport even though I have no goals of becoming a pro rider. As an aside, I dunno if it’s the same store you went to, but the folks Trek store in Broomfield have been outrageously great to work with for our Fuel EXe and didn’t make us feel like we weren’t “real mountain bikers” for wanting to ride an eMTB. Like you, they were just stoked to see more people out enjoying time on bikes.

I definitely agree with you, gatekeeping can ruin the fun! About the Marlins, I can say that after a year and 3000Km (~1900 miles), I still have a ton of fun with it, your videos helped me make up my mind at the time! And although sometimes I wish I was on something with longer travel, I will definitely keep the Marlin as a "gravel"/city bike.

As a beginner, I appreciate this video. Like you, my first MTB was the Trek Marlin 7. I just added an Orbea Occam H20 for my 1st FS MTB for the 2024 riding season. I heard about the PB comments and I think it was a reckless comment that tarnished their reputation and image. The whole, "I'm better than you", attitude is lame, tired, extremely low vibrating so I no longer follow their channel. The MTB sport is for everyone at every skill level. Its a community and about the love and passion for riding.

Although, with the skills you learnt on your BMX, I don't think you were really a beginner.
Fun part is that I only have my dream bike because a group of friends bought MTBs, expensive carbon fibre trail bikes. One of them suffered an injury, he couldn't go with them on their first ride.
They went, felt it was too scary, sold their bikes and got road bikes. He didn't sell his bike until much later, because he felt riding on the road was dangerous.
And to me, even though I don't really go to trails anymore, riding a full suspension mountain bike is much better than having to wait for a bus or a train.
    Cheaper too, somehow.
Frankly, I don't blame the guy's friends, the trail they went to is kinda scary. It's not hard, the first part really is just 🟦, it just looks scary. My friend just said lean your weight back a little and just go whenever it looks bad and it works. Strangely all the way to the double black diamond part lol.
For me, MTBs were full commit the whole time.
Road bikes however didn't feel very necessary until I wanted to break the 30kph average over 100km.
But for daily commuting, nothing beats a full sus.
