I followed a tip from Planterina where you use bobby pins to pin the strands into the soil, so that at each node it starts to root and send out vines. Works really well for me so far!
Thanks Harli. I paused the video a few seconds before the end. Now I'm back and have chopped 3 kinds of pothos and a scindapsus, right above where the leaves start to get smaller or a long bare patch with lots of space between the leaves. I am waiting the hour you recommended to callous over, and then will stick them straight back in and leave the cutting moist. I'm skipping the water prop step! Yes, I have been someone who is afraid to trim my plants. Am even looking at the beautiful leaves I removed and feeling sad. Very practical vid. You explained the rationale and showed us exactly how to do it. I am a teacher, so can appreciate that.
What I think was missed was that for that specific plant the growth starts small and the leaves mature (and reach full size) with time. Some plants sends out shoots at full size but Philodendron Brasil and hedaraceum don’t. So the sparse looks is only temporary.
Yes!! Thank you for showing HOW you put the cuttings back in the pot. I've been wondering if people were disturbing the roots by digging a hole and repotting rooted cuttings. Learned a lot. Thanks again.
I always like the bobby-pin method. I just take the vine and pin it in the soil at a node. Then it can root and continue to grow. It gets fuller and I don’t have to propagate.
@Harli G I've read about this- Harli G is this something you do? If so, can you do a video on it?? Always afraid to tie my plants to stakes in Hope's I dont damage them. I use broad ties sometimes too. This ok to do??
I have a very long Brasil which I like, and I don't mind the slight untidiness. But I do have stems that have skipped several leaves one after another. I have left them for a while to see if the leaves will grow, but this isn't the case. So I'm happy to see this to reassure me that I'm doing the right thing when I decide to give her a trim
Thank you I took a pothos cutting a year ago and it’s finally showing new growth lol I wanted to keep it looking full but adding back in the cuttings when it gets to that point is a fantastic idea
I always pick out smaller plants because I get nervous about them outgrowing my tiny apartment! But it’s good to have an option when the time comes to prune! Thank you as always for the great advice!
Yes gurl get them sponsorships, I watched thru ur ads and clicked on them 💗💗!I'm loving ur nail polish, Btw thank you for the info I had no idea it was btr to propagate a plant after watering it, but like now it makes so much sense 💗💗
Hi harli! I wanted to ask for an update on how this plant has done? Did the cuttings root? I’m confused because if you have to keep the soil moist for them to root won’t the mother plant become overwatered? I really want to try this on my pothos but I’m scared because I’m sooooo careful not to overwater her! Worried about being able to keep the cuttings moist without making the mama plant mad...
I Like My Plants To Be Bushy BUT I Also LOVE To See Them Trail!!! THEY Can Trail Their Bushy Selves On Down To The Floor AND I Will Be Smiling At Them!!! #PlantPower!!!
Hi Harli, great video, I do like the look of a fuller hanging plant, and sometimes I will pot them back into the plant to help with that. I just recently trimmed back my Cebu Blue, it's pretty full but all the new growth was smaller and there were some long trails. They are currently propagating in water because my plant is too full to add them in, so I just will have another Cebu Blue, nothing wrong with that, lol. You are looking so glowing and beautiful, there is something to be said about that pregnancy glow and you have it for sure. Thanks again for another great video, I always love all of the tips and info. See you soon, love you sweet girl, bye for now.
this was so helpful! my golden pothos is my favorite plant and i want it to get full and bushy :) i am afraid of taking cuttings because i love how healthy and big it’s leaves are
I am also looking for hanging plants such as peperomia scandens or Hoya Heuschkeliana variegated what do you think for hanging on the stairs leading to the bedroom
I get scared to do "haircuts" but have heard you say many times it's most beneficial for the plant. I have 2 pothos- one full, one leggy. So guess it's time for haircut! As hard as it is! Do you ever stake yours up? Do you find that makes leaves bigger? Thanks for your great, informative, cute videos! I watch them all!!! As Momma Stef says- Plant on! 🤙🌱🌿🍃🌵⚘
Tip: Soil propagation is generally more likely to succeed without rot if you use a rooting powder. When I am doing this stuff I feel really zen...like a moving meditation..."I am one with nature" haha! Seriously you look great in this one.
I am new to gardening and pothos is my favourite, it reminds me of my grandma when I was little. I propagated my pothos in the wrong time of the year and root was taking a long time to come out so I put it in the soil in the middle of the process because its getting colder in U.K. I just checked and the roots is just the size where it was and seems like it has stopped growing. Will it not grow anymore as I have switched the medium before the time?
Hi Harli, I just have one question. After you propagate your cuttings back to soil you mentioned to keep your plant more moist then usually to take a root. Is it ok to bottom water and if your top soil doesn't get wet will these new cuttings survive? 🤔
Yep, I do the same thing... I only have one trailing/vining plant, my green wandering jew, and not even kidding, I trim bits every 2/3 weeks because it grows like crazy! Also, I tried propagating on water to check how long it would take, and a week later it was ready to be put in soil, with roots bigger than my index finger
For some reason I only feel comfortable with water propagation 😬 the only plants I’ve soil propagated is my cane begonia, sometimes that gets crispy leaves. Thanks for sharing I’m going to give this a try! 🌿
That's how I usually feel too! I LOVE water propagation, but I don't want to have to keep getting a step stool out to take the plant down to repot the water propagations. :P I'm just lazy haha
As somebody whose native language isn’t English I noticed that most plant lovers refer to their plants as „she“ and „her“ while others call them „he“ and „him“ - it‘s rarely an „it“ (we were taught: thing? - it). I don’t know if it’s a linguistic thing but I find it interesting!
I don't have much luck propagating directly in soil in the winter. I think there's a few reasons for this. The plant is in a more dormant state in the winter and it's simply too cold, & dry. The cutting usually just withers up and dies. In the spring & summer it's a totally different story. When the days start get longer I think it triggers something in the plant to start growing again. (And yes. I have grow lights on my plants during the winter, but they still don't soil propagate well.)
After watching your video I went back to check my philodendron Brasil and the stringy leaves have grown! They look a rich color and I’m debating if I should cut them. I also noticed another long trail has 3 separate sections but it’s full of young leaves that have grown tremendously the past few days. I didn’t think they’d grow and I had noticed exactly what you noticed stringy and smaller leaves. I don’t remember if I sprayed this plant with orchid spray food.😂I probably did as I was spraying my hoyas 😬😬
i’ve been thinking about doing this with my micans, but i’ve been hesitating because i don’t want to cut her :-( do you think it’ll be fine to do it in the winter, or should i wait until spring?
Harli, what's the advantage of waiting for the cutting to callace first? Is it required. I'm definitely digging the bobby pin idea mentioned in the comments.
Okay I don’t mean this negatively at ALL. But your monstera looks a little floppy right now and both of mine are extremely floppy and droopy right now! Is it the change in the weather/light from winter? Does this happen to them every year? I haven’t had them during a winter yet and I’m a bit worried.
Cynthiana Bishop my plant is getting a bit top heavy so I think I need to add stakes. Some of the leaves are floppy because the soil is starting to dry out, but I am terrified of overwatering one the wintertime so I hold off until about half of the leaves look that way!
So many plants are not to be fed in winter....but if they are growing shouldn’t we be feeding? I feed my violets, episcias snd streps which are under lights, but I am wondering how new growth can come in foliage plants and have large leaves if we don’t feed, especially if we are supplementing with grow lights.
Diane Prostko yeah I’m not sure what is actually ‘correct’ as far as fertilizing in the cold season, but I do still fertilize every time I water during winter
Thanks for sharing! I find new growth on vines isnt always small, If it got more light could it in theory get larger leaves on its vines. I have my philo brasil next to a south facing window and they are pretty uniform sized leaves. Not sure if anyone else has found this
@@HarliG I'm in the Midwest 😊 I wanted to make sure since I know they prefer to dry out between waterings. I didn't want to drown the whole plant or dry out the cuttings. Thank you!
Why do the leaves come in smaller? I’ve noticed on a few of my plants that the leaves are coming in smaller and I thought it was because of the winter lighting.
Can someone help me? I just bought a Silver Pothos and there’s a lot of roots but I heard you don’t want to take plants immediately out of the nursery pots. Anyways, do Pothos mind a tight soil?
ThisIsKayleeMarie it should be fine for a few weeks or so until you’re ready to pot 😊 it may even be best to wait for warm weather, but totally not necessary!
My best tip for bushier plants is to make a few plant friends who don't have large plant budgets. All you do is snip and hand them off. They do the rest of the work. Everybody wins! 😂

When you out in new cuttings into soil do you water from the top or bottom? I was wondering if bottom watering it wouldn’t get to the cutting
Great video. Do you know how to encourage a hanging plant to grow downwards rather than like down and then back up/outwards?

Hey I don't know if you know but wandering jew is quite an outdated and offensive term for the plant
Cool tips Harli I will definitely be be using these
Thanks Harli, I needed to do this to my cebu blue. It gave me the motivation to get it done!
I just take the long vines and drap them across the top. Keep doing that and it becomes very full and nice. My Cebu Blue Pothos looks like a big ball.
