- Leroy Smith was supposed to be the coolest Tekken character ever.
He oozed style, had awesome attacks, and was the most exciting new designs Tekken had seen in years.
But Leroy wasn't the dream character Tekken fans wanted him to be.
He was a nightmare that broke Tekken.

The Akuma shenanigan was better bcoz the Skill ceiling required to play Akuma is really high.
But Leroy? Leroy is the green rank savior.
Leroy was straight brain dead. There's a good couple of characters with a parry of some sort and their's actually require timing. You could just hold Leroy's for a couple seconds and still get a good payoff.
To add to your point. The skill ceiling for akuma isn't just high. It's near impossible to teach. There are only a select few that akuma allows to unlock his power.

It’s pretty much impossible to play Akuma well on a pad, and even playing stick the skill level is very high so it didn’t bother me as much that Akuma was in every tournament before because I know how hard it is to play him like that. But Leeroy on the other hand was and still is braindead. I immediately lost respect for every Leeroy player in Top 8 last year
ezikillz you can play Akuma on pad, one of the best Akuma players is GoukiAkuma, European Akuma player who uses a Xbox pad

Poor Mikio, he deserved that underdog win.
Yes, he and Saint too, he deserves to be in the top 8 after all those years of waiting give you your main character back, give your best but the whole wave of Leroys did its job.
Honestly, if it wasn't for Leroy, many other incredibly good players would have had a much better chance at winning just by advancing past Mikio. Gotta give the man props though, he did make it out when all those pros didn't and put up a hell of a fight, Julia being a mixup monster def helped too in the matchup.

@@fvb7 A lot of it was the Angry Jack Response. For someone who thought spacies were the only way to win, HBox was a direct contradiction of that belief. When reality doesn't check with a belief, people sometimes don't change the belief, but just get mad and try to find some explanation for why they're right and reality is wrong. Doubly so if they themselves invested huge amounts of time and effort into learning the spacies, since in that case, HBox's success would also imply (to some) that they wasted all that time and effort.
It's all kinda dumb and not logically sound, but people are emotional, not logical.

9:34 Ulsan was actually taking out hordes of Leroy's with his Bob and Kazumi who are his mains. He was a fan favorite who stayed loyal to his characters including Mikio who stuck with his Julia.
He reportdly used leroy once in an off-stream match but I agree with you, It's unfair to put him with the rest of the Leroys when all of his other matches were with his mains Kazumi and Bob. It was Him and Mikio that made this tournament bearable to watch.
When Twitch chat actually cheers for Kazumi, you know that Leroy is BS.

Same as when steve was insanity, or jin, the difficulty of the characters made it so that even though they were insanity on paper, everyone couldnt just pick him up and destroy with them, especially online

Akuma didn’t dominate Tekken. When Akuma was placing top 8 in tournaments, it was from 2 players. Takra cup being an exception to this as Akuma was the most popular character in Pakistan. On top of that, you didn’t really see many Akuma players online who can actually do what makes him strong.

this video skips over the fact that 80% of the ppl who got their hands on leroy were defending leroy at the start, lol. it took a while for it to sink in for them.
It's all fun and games until a better player uses the broken character against you. Then it sinks in.
To be fair thats common in every fighting game whenever a new op character is released. Sometimes you might want more data before you make a conclusion but sometimes people want to be carries or some meta breaking character without seeing the consequences of that
and it made sense, the community agreed that he looked awersome, great design, fun gameplay, visually impressive fighting style. they were right in saying he was a great inclusion. the problem is, he came "overcooked". still, the problem wasnt the people defending him, it was the tekken dev team. they took too long to nerf him, they let it go like that, all the way to evo, and got egg on their face.
at least they fixed it, its more than can be said about bayonetta in ssb WiiU...
One look at his frame data at the start was enough, one play showed it was so much more than just frame data. It was everything, he had everything. And it was obvious af from day 1, all the people who said otherwise were either ignorant or noobs.

The problem lies literally there! It's not Wing Chun. He has the best move from almost every character, but improved. Unseeable hellsweep, orbital heel, counterhit juggles. Take a look at Ganryu, or Julia... Right off the bat, you will say: Oh! This character is a Sumo Wrestler (Ganryu) or this character is a Baji Quan fighter (Julia). Leroy doesn't resemble Wing Chun for me, only his stance and a couple of fast rotating close punches. He doesn't have an unique playstyle because he has every single good move from various playstyles in the game. I think the fear of failure after the hype that surrounded his reveal made Bandai Namco take this path with him. I mean, he literally jumps and does a half circle overhead kick in the air. C'mon man, Wing Chun is supposed to be a grounded fighting style!

Jinxed Swashbuckler Fahk is someone who does have abusable normals and with the way his hitbox is, and the way Tekken is on attacks missing because you’re too close and the hurtbox is now behind the attacker, yeah I can see him needing to be banned. @@UltimateBallaPOM Kazumi and Jack are technical in their gameplay but not their execution (except Jack's blue uppercut). You need superior movement for both of them
Characters like Akuma, Geese and the Mashimas are like learning violin. Great payoff but takes a lot of skill to master. Leroy is like playing the triangle in comparison.

The commentators were reminded of the same thing. There was a Bob player holding on and advancing against the onslaught of Leroys and one of the commentators (I think it was Tasty Steve) remarked "are we seeing the villain of Tekken 6 becoming the hero of Tekken 7?"
I loved the crowd participation with Leroy's "You're done/dumb!" Rage Art at Evo 2020. Mikio's Julia was a real treat, too.

I'm probably misremembering incorrectly but I thought it was 6 Leroy's in top 8. Uslan (kazumi,Bob) and Mikio (Julia) were the only two of the eight (Tho that is hardly any consolation)

But leroy doesn't care about that now does he. Its especially toxic online, a leroy player will still abuse his parry and some other moves, especially hermit moves, win 3 or 4 times. And when you devise a game plan to counter his bs he will either rage quit or lose quit.
Everyone who uses bullshit character quit when they notice that we are forming a game plan against them. They're incapable of switch playstyle when we download them, so they just quit.
His hellsweep still bullshit. And if you know that the leroy player loves to parry start using lows and throws. Or you can whiff punish the parry
@@axellyann5085 Happened to me couple days ago against a Zafina if you believe me. I haven't played against that character much and I have been playing tekken for 4 months. But I beat this Fujin Zafina player twice with my Usurper Bryan and he left. They just keep Abusing her stances and going for lows. I have a rudimentary gameplan against that kind of Zafina. I will upload it to let people see what works
@@qwteb As I said a game plan can be devised. But it takes 2 or three matches to get used to it. In my case. I started using Paul's ultimate tackle and throw game.
I know bull, the tekken online community is a millenial joke. It is a very toxic environment, and this is coming from a life long tekken, and street fighter player. Nina's beem my favorite character since the first game, thought i was invincible, until leroy came along. Like i said in my comment, tekken isnt tekken anymore. Friend of mine from England asked if i was getting tekken 8, and i blatantly said "no way in hell"
All I can hear with this character is "LEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY JENKIIIIIIIIIINS!" lol. But I can understand that he would need to be a bit nerfed to be fair
As more of a Smash Melee player myself! I compare the ability to have constant hitboxes out there to be a similar design philosophy as Sheik in Melee... Just possible to be a hitbox tornado!

Same dood I hated this game ...thank God I only spent 11 bucks on it when I saw the trailers and gameplay when it first got released I promised myself not to support it and refuse to buy it then recently I forgot all about it and bought it....I hated this game probably more than any game ever and I've been playing tekken since tekken 1.tekken tag tournament 2 is best and it's not even available for ps4 unless you get psnow
Honestly I prefer companies just focus on making a fun ass character even if he's broken as hell. I know it's weird to say this on an esports channel but esports...... kind of ruins the fun in games sometimes tbh. I feel like catering entirely to esports is part of why a game like SF5 was largely a fucking bore. You could do tons of broken and FUN stuff with Charlie in the beta and then they made him boring as fuck to in the final game cause of "muh balance." Just let a game have characters that are busted beyond belief and let the game be FUN.
Leroy always felt like when dragunov was first added. Completely over the top combos and power with brilliant recovery; they weren’t even hard to pull off.

Leroy is that kind of a character every game has that gives you a love and hate vibe, or sometimes both.
I can't wait for Tekken 8, especially with that cliffhanger in story mode.
IIRC some data miners found nerfs for Leroy BEFORE HE WAS ADDED which only added fuel to the fire! It made it seem like Leroy was this "Pay to win" character and a lot of people were put off by that! :O
