Its really not as bad as it looks. I didn't even know it was a big deal until I found a tik tok after I had been over it. Unless you're an idiot, you can't go off the road. I did notice it didn't have real guard rails and called my daughter to say that but otherwise it was just normal driving. The hype is what makes it scary, not the actual bridge.
I'm from the Eastern Shore of Virginia and now I live in Florida. Just seeing this video makes me miss being home even more. Thank you for posting this video and I hope you will be posting some more.
Good video. One of the most beautiful drives i have ever taken. I hope hope to show my family one day. Thank you for bringing back memories. What a beautiful country we live in.
When my parents and I moved from New Jersey to Georgia in 1978, we'd still come back up to visit relatives sometimes, and my dad would always take the scenic route and go across this. We'd stop at the restaurant every time. Great memories. I don't go up there nearly as much, but when I do, it's always through the Chesapeake Bay bridge -tunnel.
Went through/on that somewhere around 1966 in a 1957 Oldsmobile coupe. My mother was driving. We were taking my brother back to either Newport News or Norfolk. I was around 12 or 13. Best part of that trip was that we got to tour his ship, the USS Enterprise.......aircraft carrier. AMAZING! He never told my mother that we were driving under water and that the Enterprise would actually sail over that tunnel till after we were back home. To me, the tunnel is much less frightning than the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, even though I HATE tunnels. Thanks for the vid.
I found it to be very cool at dusk when I drove it over 10 yrs ago. Loved the area, and the view. But I understand how it can be terrifying to those with bridge fears.
Thank you so much for making this. Though I don't mind bridges, I was afraid of the tunnel. After seeing the video, it looks very easy, if I can handle the Holland Tunnel in New York, I'll be fine. Glad I saw this or I was going to have to rearrange my whole route. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!
Can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I was really stressing over it, I kept thinking when I saw the aerial view, I'm going to go in that? Then I realized the Holland tunnel is also one way and also a mile though I believe Chesapeake has two tunnels? The bridge looks absolutely beautiful. Long overdue to relocate to Florida so I'm crossing every t in dotting every i as I'm traveling alone with three fur children. Thanka again.
I was scared reading some of the comments, then I watched the video and thought... but this is just like the Holland tunnel, nothing to be scared about.
Thanks for the video. You had a great weather day to cross. My first trip was June 1972 across the CBBT. Was only one lane each way back then. My Godfather and his girlfriend took them with me. I got out of school 2 weeks early as my Mom and Dad had to prove this would be an educational trip for me. Which it was, as we did Williamsburg, Monticello, Yorktown, etc. Plus the Blue Ridge Mountains and Luray Caverns just to name a few places we visited. It was great as an 11 year old to experience all of this. I took my wife across in 2016 as she had grown up in Illinois her entire life. She was impressed. Fortunately the restaurant and overlook points were all open. I took her to Langley AFB for their 100 year air show celebration. Disappointing to hear the restaurant won't be back. Last trip was Oct to Williamsburg in 2020. I did the CBBT vs I-95 to get to Williamsburg. I don't mind paying the extra money for the scenery. Needless to say Williamsburg was a ghost town due to COVID-19. Which was great for us. Safe journeys.
That sounds like my situation except about 25 years earlier. I took my wife and step daughter across in the early 90's. My wife grew up in northern Illinois, so I was showing them around. We also ate at the restaurant.
Enjoyed the video as I plan on driving through there in the near future. The only thing that displeased me was the amount of time you spent in the left lane. Quite a few vehicles had to pass you on the right. Left lane camping is a pet peeve of mine. You should stay to the right when not passing.
Good video. I live in VA and drive across there every time I come to OC which has been many years. They have been doing construction and adding 2nd tunnels for some time now. I always enjoy the view. Hope you have a great trip.
@@ReelJayB I doubt if it will reopen. It was closed by the tunnel commission about 5 years ago for the construction of the additional tunnels. I think they said back then it would not reopen.
Amazing how they had the ambition to build something like this back then, if they hadn't done it in the 60s they would never have built it nowadays with the way costs always seem to spiral out of control.
Beautiful drive with a beautiful sky. Thank you. I have been to your area a couple dozen times, primarily to Ocean City, but never got to drive the Chesapeake bay tunnel/bridge. Always wanted to, and to explore the bay areas. One of these days I might get to.
It's a beautiful drive, especially the Virginia eastern shore....it's definitely quiet, but there are some pretty cool shops along the way. Hopefully you'll get to road trip down there soon.
I love that tunnel!! My sisters and I would see how long we could hold our breath until we reached the end of the tunnel from start to finish. I miss being a kid 😂
going through the tunnel, on the right side, with the railing, riding through gives the illusion that you are going over the water, atleast to me, it's like the lightness is the sky and the darkness , the water...... thanks for the ride, enjoy your trip! safe travels!
Thanks for the video, nice view. I went across there about 35 years ago but unfortunately it was night and could only see when going thru the tunnel. Love your videos.
I felt his sigh at the end haha that def would give me anxiety I missed this bridge on the way down south but may have to giver her a shot in the way back
I have had a recurring nightmare since I was a child, so about 25+ years, about riding on a bridge that suddenly disappeared into the water and we were supposed to drive through the water to come up on the other side. For 2.5 decades I had this dream that felt so real I was sure I’d been there but could never place it. I began to think maybe it was a past life experience. Over the weekend I went to see my dad for his birthday. We were both up at 3 AM and couldn’t sleep. I was telling him about this dream I’ve had ever since I was little. He then informed me we went over/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on a vacation to Nags Head NC when I was five. I looked at an aerial photo and instantly knew this was it. 5 year old me thought we had to drive straight through the water. I knew that we had been over bridges and through tunnels on this trip, but my mind brain never integrated that the tunnel was in the middle of the bridge. I was somewhat emotional to have this mystery solved.
It's a crazy tunnel for sure! Glad thr mystery was finally solved!! I never looked at it from a younger kid perspective, but it was definitely make sense because of all the tunnels and bridges.
I drive that route every time I go to the Outer Banks. I am always amazed how, when you are in the tunnels, the tops of the 18 wheeler trailers are so close to the ceiling of the tunnel.
Duuuuuuuuude! I was thinking the same! On the 2nd tunnel, there were some 18 wheelers going by and I remember thinking how close they were to hitting the top! It literally looked like they were a foot away from smacking it!
As a child we crossed this bridge and the scariest part was looking ahead and seeind the road end and it looked like the bridge/road ended and we were driving into the water. I thought they would show that on the video.
@@stuartlee6622 yup! All jokes aside, I don't know much about that bridge or even how old it was. So if the ferry was a passenger ferry like the bay Bridge in annapolis, or a car ferry like cape may, I have don't have any clue.

Other tunnels in Pittsburgh don't look as nice but we did get relined Armstrong tunnel.
This is the most scariest ride ever. I drove this bridge to OC two years ago.doing the summer when there's strong thunder storms. I couldn't drive fast enough to get off this bridge doing the storm. Lol. The safest place was in the tunnels for me while driving through a storm. But it was worth it once we got to OC. The drive back across that bridge seem alot shorter to me tho. i dont know why
