    My brother was deep sea diver on the construction of this bridge tunnel. I have beautiful ap news photos of him in full diver suit. Beautiful pictures being suited up. It was a very dangerous job!!!

    I have crossed this bridge many times during my naval career (1976-1984) to go home on weekend passes and vacation! I've seen difficult and hazardous days crossing it during major storms, especially snow storms! Not a fun place to be at those times! After leaving the navy, I only crossed it a few times when it was still a single causeway. Four years ago was the first time I had returned to Norfolk for my Navy Ship's Reunion and realized that the bridge had been expanded to TWO causeways much to my surprise!! I thought I was seeing double!!! I thank the engineers and builders of this magnificent TWIN span! It allowed me to cross safely each time. Kudos!

    I've always found this bridge fascinating. I went across/through it when I was 4 yrs old and I'm almost 50 and I remember it like it was yesterday. I've always wanted to go back.

    Having lived in Virginia Beach my whole life, it's amazing how this beauty of a bridge was built so long ago!

    25 years! 25 years! I have been looking for this 2:46 section where the rotary process for making the piles is shown. Thank goodness for this video.

    I drove across it in Jan 2017 during the snow storm at night, scary! That black water looked so menacing!

    I spent many months working on this bridge in 1986/87. It was dirty tiresome work but you couldn't beat the view. Plenty of fresh air.

    I drove this many times. Much safer now that there are two bridges. Always pay the round trip if you can. It’s cheaper.

    He said Norfolk is home to the biggest naval base on the east coast.. wrong...Norfolk naval is the biggest base there is. They call it the Atlantic fleet.

    Drove it several times. It's not for everyone. On a hazy day when you can't see either shore and all you have is a strip of asphalt surrounded by ocean, yeah it's a little trippy.

      I have always searched for the perfect word to describe going over this engineering marvel
      Trippy is definitely a good one. Traveling it definitely evokes a feeling of mortal smallness and vunerability.

    Amazing bridge/tunnel. Having lived in Norfolk, VA while attending Old Dominion university, I remember the elderly couple that stopped in the middle of the bridge to take photos & killed a truck driver that drove off the bridge, to avoid hitting them. The driver have his life to save theirs. THAT'S why old people should not have a driver's license, after the age of 70-72 yrs old. Sad.

    • @vondellsanders3872
      @vondellsanders3872 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They should have never stopped on that bridge.

    • @ncdave4life
      @ncdave4life 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If that's really what happened, then I agree that stopping to take pictures was obviously illegal, stupid, and dangerous. But that has nothing to do with the car driver's age, and it is the responsibility of *_every_* driver, including that truck driver, to ensure that he can stop his vehicle in time to avoid hitting a stopped vehicle in front of him. *_Always._* No exceptions.

    • @bigrich1381
      @bigrich1381 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      David Burton You’re about a dumb fuck. Those big trucks weigh many tons & cant stop on a dime like cars. They have more rights than cars because of their sheer weight. Stopping on a bridge is stupid & that trucker gave his life to save those two old farts. So don’t talk about him.

    They don't mention the dead fish that covered the beaches at Bayview for weeks. We used to fish there a lot but the fishing never recovered.

  • @ncdave4life
    @ncdave4life 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very interesting video, but what's with all the gaps? There are somewhere around 1½ dozen parts of this show missing, plus nearly a minute of "dead air" at the end.

      At what minute mark / marks does this happen? One reason could be that it was recorded 30 years ago on a vhs tape.

    • @ncdave4life

      All through the video. There are approximately eighteen "splices" where parts of this show are missing, and nearly a minute of "dead air" at the end.

      Fucking millienials. Its on vhs. Believe it or not it was only a few years ago when we werent dependant on this technology and just wasting it for a perceptions of luxary. Gotta have the latest iphone. Cant live without your phone. Im just glad i didnt come up in this millenial era because when shit hits the fan and electronics dnt work or power goes out most of you wnt be able to deal with the old school manula way of doing things. Idk like actually getting off your ass and go shopping.
