Yeah. The EAS alarm scares the crap out of me. I lived on Oahu during the false alarm thing. The way the rest of the U.S. heard about it was just that it was a “false alarm”. It obviously was a false alarm, but it took 30-odd minutes for us to find out. I thought I was going to die for 30 minutes. I told one of my teachers, who was telling us about how we have it good and we’ve never been scared for our lives before like she was during 9/11 (I live in NJ now), and when I told her about how the EAS thing gives me a mini heart attack she told me I was overreacting because “That’s just an island, it isn’t like it was a big city that you lived by.” The missile, had it been real, would have killed everyone for miles and left fallout all over the island, water surrounding the island, and some of the other islands as well. And 9/11 was planes. Not nuclear warheads. (I’m not demeaning the significance of 9/11 I’m only comparing living in a different STATE than the one that had planes fly into buildings and living in the center of a 20 x 40 mile island with a nuclear warhead approaching.)

Takes me back to the time when I sat B-52 nuclear alert in the 70's. The klaxon would sound and crews headed to their planes not knowing if it just another alert exercise or the real thing. We only discovered if it was an exercise once we decoded the emergency action message and we could breathe a little easier. Scary times then and now.
I've worked in Schweinfurt/Germany a few years ago and been in a situation which is almost as frightening as a nuclear war; My boss an me were just heading to a business-meeting when we heard the sirens. For me as a German firefighter, the intervals were clear, Disaster alert with the addendum ABC-alert... that and the fact that there was an active nuclear power plant 10km away from us were enough to frighten us to death! We're headed back inside, grabbed a radio, turned it on an there it was, the message I hoped for: All is fine, it's only a test! I've headed back outside to smoke a cigarette and believe me; that one was the best of my entire life! I've learned how to react in such situations, I've nenn trained to protect my fellow citizens but the first thing that comes to your mind in such a situation is: "Fuck, not for real!!!" May god protect us from such a fate!

For me as a German firefighter, the intervals were clear, Disaster alert with the addendum ABC-alert... that and the fact that there was an active nuclear power plant 10km away from us were enough to frighten us to death!
We're headed back inside, grabbed a radio, turned it on an there it was, the message I hoped for:
All is fine, it's only a test!
I've headed back outside to smoke a cigarette and believe me; that one was the best of my entire life!
I've learned how to react in such situations, I've nenn trained to protect my fellow citizens but the first thing that comes to your mind in such a situation is: "Fuck, not for real!!!"
