I've looked at a couple other videos on these and to release the tension you're supposed to flip that little red lever to release the spool, then you bring it all the way forward and it should click releasing the cable 1 notch at a time until you can push that other release lever down with your thumb.

There are versions where releasing the tension is done on a slightly different basis. You can release the tension more than one notch at a time, but it is not fully automatic and you still have to put your fingers into the ratchet mechanism.

you make it look so easy. The one I bought was a devil. It just wouldn't come open so first I loosened the nut on the spool, then I made sure that lever with the red cap was all the way up and locked (need some glue for that cap), then attached the pulley to the tailgate bar or whatever it's called that holds the tailgate up and then pulled on the other end while pushing the lever end. It was still stuck but I found I could loosen it up and get the cable out if I just cranked, pulled, cranked, pulled until the whole cable finally came out. Unfortunately I was so frustrated with it, I went with plan b and I'll maybe use it later. thanks though. the video gave me a couple of hints

That release button wont work when weight is on it. You should make a video just on how to release the tension!

To release when the weight is on and the button won't release it. I've just smashed the release button with a hammer but that will break it eventuality so what you do is pull the tension lever like your trying to click it one more time but don't let it click...When you pull the tension handle/lever before it clicks to the next gear, then.. you push the release button and let go very slowly the tension handle/lever. It will move down a few clicks. Do that a few times and your good. Let me know if that helps/works ! !

Just in case...what I mean by tension handle/lever is the button on the bottom. Click the red button. PULL the handle like your trying to tighten one more click but don't go all the way. and that should give you room to push the bottom tension handle/lever to ease it up a few clicks. Repeat a few times if needed.
