    Janet Arinaitwe was born with HIV but didn’t find out until she was 19 years old. She recently became the first HIV-positive person in the UK to give birth to three consecutive HIV-negative children. There is still a huge amount of ignorance surrounding HIV and AIDS. Here Janet answers some of the key questions. www.bodyandsoul...

    I decided very shortly after being diagnosed with HIV that I would not allow anyone to shame or belittle me because of my status. Growing up gay in rural Montana, I was riddled with shame and self-hatred, and I knew that I couldn't go back to living that way.
    I took a public speaking course about six months after my diagnosis, and for my informative speech I talked about stigma and misinformation surrounding HIV/AIDS. I opened the speech by saying, "In May of 2012, I was diagnosed with HIV." You could've heard a pin drop in that room throughout my eight-minute speech.
    It was incredibly empowering to share my story that way. The best part was all of the classmates who thanked me afterwards and told me that they had learned so much that they didn't know about the virus.
    That's how we can defeat stigma: information. This video is a wonderful example of erasing HIV stigma. I applaud this woman for her courage and for surviving a hostile world. And thank you, Vice, for creating important content like this.

      Idk... I kind of feel like it's not so responsible to keep having children knowing the stress you are putting on a already compromised body. Not to mention HIV still has a mortality rate meaning if it does decide to advance (which I hope never happens) your children are left to see their mother suffer and die. She is so eloquent on this topic. I am grateful for videos like this, because I have to be honest - the school I went to really failed its students in educating us about STDs. It was definitely more of the "don't have sex or you will get pregnant and/or die" approach. Consequently, it was well into my adulthood that I learned that HIV was not a death sentence like it used to be, and that even AIDS could be reversed back into HIV. I felt so ignorant when I found out. And I still assume that if an adult has HIV, they must have gotten it through sexual intercourse or sharing of needles - it still surprises me when someone says they got it as a baby because they were born with it. But that's the case for many people - and even if people DO contract HIV through intercourse or drug use, we need to stop stigmatizing those experiences also. It's an illness, not a marker of somebody's character.
    I am grateful to this woman for sharing her story and for helping those of us who still need more education on this topic obtain it.

    I used to work in a non profit clinic that saw many many hiv+ families. The most important thing as a patient is early detection and being very vigilant with your medication. We need more hiv clinics and the stigma to reduce because the medicine exists, to reduce someone’s viral load to practically undetectable and they can live a 100% healthy life. The conversation should be very open so no one feels ashamed for taking control of their health.

    HIV is no longer a death sentence. My brother was diagnosed at age 24 1/2 in 1999 and here we are 24 years later and he's almost 49 years old and undetectable. He went 10 years without any medications at all and his t-cell count was fine. I forced him to go on meds for fear something would happen to him. He went on meds in 2009, The crazy part is he is healthy and all, but I notice that after the meds his mental health declined, and he started feeling things in his head and had about 9 psych hospitalizations since about 3 years after meds up until last year. Not sure if it's related or not but his doctors may feel there's a correlation.

      Read inventing the aids virus, it explains how HIV doesn’t cause AIDS. Everyone died from drugs and unhealthy lifestyle. The antiviral therapies are the biggest killers. Pure scam, same with convid1984. Fauxchi is pure evil.

    • @prinsespluis

      no, she obviously doesn't carry a resistant gene that makes her immune to hiv.
      If she did carry such a gene the testresults wouldn't have come out positive, now would they?

      @@prinsespluis they would have. People who have HIV resistance still test positive but they can live decades without treatment and still not develop AIDS

  • @NS-xt5wv
    @NS-xt5wv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem with stigma is caused by the lack of media attention regarding the progress of HIV treatments! People still have in mind the horrors of the 80s and 90s when HIV wasn’t being treated at all! There is absolutely ZERO conversation about how the medicine has evolved since then to manage this problem. HIV positive people now can live a pretty normal life and have healthy monogamous relationships.
