I got to meet the lead actor Taimak aka "Bruce Leroy" at Comic Con a few years ago. I didn't even know he was gonna be there cuz he wasn't on the list. I remember walking around and hearing the song "The Glow" and freaked out, I was like a dog hunting for a tennis ball. The guy was 52 years old at the time and looked like he was 30. He is a well respected martial arts master in real life and such a nice guy. He was shocked to see me when he looked up because I'm 6' 7" and 460 pounds so I was a mountain compared to him. He said "when I started to look up from signing an autograph, all Isaw was a shadow rolling in" we had the biggest laugh about it. I looooove this movie with all my heart. For the longest time, this movie wasn't available on DVD/Blu-Ray or even streaming. That's due to the copyright and licenses regarding the music. Berry Gordon, who was the executive producer of the movie, was also the main music promoter. Back in the 1980s, the music was licensed for theaters and TV, mainly premium cable like HBO. Then it was reworked to include VHS tape as well. When DVDs came out, the licenses did not cover that medium, so a new license had to be done. However, it was not, and then Blu-Ray came about. Now, movies are licensed to include nearly every possible medium, but back then, every medium had to have its own license. That's why a movie that came out in 1985, wasn't available for later viewing until 2015 unless you saw it on TV or VHS tape. I had a VHS tape copy I recorded off HBO when it came out. And every few years when it came on again, I would record a fresh copy. This, while waiting for more permanent medium and now, digital streaming.
I love this movie! And this was just a really fun reaction! I love that Emily loved this so much. I would give this a 9 or 9.95. Remake? Nah, I wouldn't remake this movie. It's perfect as is, doesn't need a remake. There are so many scenes to this that are just great, but I really like toward the end when Sho'nuff is gone and hollars "Leroy!" Then we see him with the red glowing hands. So cool. The soundtrack is just awesome!
One time back in the 90s, I heard a rumor they were gonna remake this with Samuel L Jackson as Shonuff. I've been waiting for confirmation ever since.🥺
I found you guys channel from this video. I love this movie and at the time of looking for some reactions to it. Emily is a gem. It was genuinely more fun watching her watch this movie than I had the last time I watched this movie. I have gone through about half of the first time film club and I enjoy about as many videos as Matt does. What does belong in the Eddie Murphy portion of your list that I didn't see is Harlem Nights. All star cast of comedians and at least as many laughs as Coming to America. This isn't his mainstream as some other movies on the list, but if you have netflix, I would recommend The Call Up and Would you Rather. I think both would be good fadder for the channel.
"I First thought of Laurence Fishburn as Leroy, but then I though Shia LaBeouf in blackface would be much better!" - Emily 2022 (I might have paraphrased a bit here)
This is my favorite film of all time. As a child I had the vhs and would watch it on repeat!!! And it had representation for us as well. I’m so glad you loved it so much. It really warmed my heart.
One of my all time favorites. My dad took me and my friend to see it. I remember someone throwing a drink at the screen. Good times. This is one of those movies if it’s on tv I’m gonna watch it.
This is my favorite reaction y'all have ever done and that's saying something cause I've never seen y'all do a bad reaction!! I've lost count of how many times I've seen this movie and it's still the best. I'm so glad y'all finally got around to The Last Dragon, it's definitely one of my faves of all time. If y'all can get a hold of the Blu Ray or Dvd, y'all need to watch this with the director's commentary, it's great!! Again a great reaction and many blessings to you and yours. I'd give this movie a rating of 10!!!
I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out in '85 with my best friend. We also saw the trailer for Big Trouble in Little China. This was a fun movie and still is.
I say Mario Van Peebles as Bruce Leroy and Ken Foree as Sho’ Nuff. Also,Emily had a great idea about how to start a sequel when she mentioned that she was interested in what the offspring of Vanity’s character and Bruce Leroy would be like.
- "Did I do it?" // "You did somethin'." 🤣 -- It's nice to think that 80s kids in Harlem AND 80s kids in the Valley ("Karate Kid") were equally WAY too into karate. 🤔 - A friend of a friend ran into the actor who played Bruce Leroy at a convention several years back, and the dude was still in great shape. - That SAME friend of a friend went on to create a karaoke company called "SHONUFF Entertainment", so he's a bit of a fan 😄 - EVERYONE had a crush on Vanity 6. And how could you not, given that her song "Nasty Girl" is a banger in that one BEVERLY HILLS COP scene. I think she's also in ACTION JACKSON. - Another comedy from around the same time with a similar-ish vibe is "D.C. CAB". To be clear, not a martial arts movie... just also a lot of crazy kinetic "WHAT?!?!" energy. - "It's my BRAIN y'all! S**t! I don't got'ta explain that garbage!!" 🤣🤣🤣
This is by far the 80s in a nutshell. I saw this in the theater absolutely loved it. I'm glad it became a cult classic. And I'm glad you took to it as much as the rest of us did growing up with it
Ohh, this movie!! Nothing but great, mindless fun! Also great to see Ernie Reyes Jr. In his acting debut. Also his dad, Ernie Reyes was in there as the guy he fought with wearing the camouflage outfit and did the pop locking kick move on. I saw this movie at a time in my youth when all my friends saw movies like they did say the beginning of the movie......sans the violence and the interrupting audience, but fun!
This is a 10/10 for me. Up at the top of my love list of all time movies. Surprisingly, I can't name a Barry Gordy movie I've seen I haven't liked. This, The Wiz, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, Mahogany, Lady Sings the Blues, all hold a special part in my heart of minority created movies. Glad you got to see it. 😊
I'm so happy to watch y'all react to this movie. It's one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE movies. I've seen this so many dozens of times, that I've lost count. I think I've only seen one other reaction channel do this movie. I hope y'all love it as much as I do.
Like many others, I had a huge crush on Vanity after watching this film. Then I saw her a couple years later in Action Jackson and, thanks to one particular scene, my crush went into overdrive.
This was one of those movies that was on TV all the time when I was growing up and I watched it every time because it's so much fun. It's always a blast to watch. Another fun movie I grew up with that was also on TV all the time was "Super Fuzz" (1980), you two should check it out sometime.
This movie was 9 year old Me's entire wheelhouse; Martial Arts, Breakdancing, and Vanity. The most important character (double fist clench) Sho-Nuff, The Shogun of Harlem. I popped this tape ALOT. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Addendum: I've been laughing at "Dirty Books, I Found Them, I Found Them..." for far to long.
So.. Berry Gordy produced a few movies and a lot of them starred Diana Ross. I think you two would love The Wiz, if you haven't seen it already. So much fun and a superb soundtrack!
lol when this popped up on my feed, I knew Emily was gonna have to say "Oh baby" or "Bless his heart" at least two or three times when it came to Leroy because he's so innocent
If you want to see Ernie Reyes Jr. kick ass as an adult, may I recommend The Rundown? It’s a really fun movie and I think The Rock’s first leading role.
So glad to see other cultures of folk enjoy this gem. This movie had my community in a chokehold as kids and we never passed up an offer to watch it. My dad would literally get so mad at me for renting this from block buster when it was on HBO all the time 😂
you guys are lovely. Emily had me in stitches and reminded me how i felt as a 13 year old when this came out. It’s not trying to be serious which is what it makes so fun and funny
My favorite thing is that Vanity has a rap song about the glow back at her studio. This obscure martial arts thing that only a few people know about, she has a song about it ready to go:
Although I've watched so many of your videos, this is my first time actually commenting and I just wanted to say that I've seen SOOOO many TH-cam movie reactors and none of them come close to you to with the perfect balance of commentary and space to enjoy the movie (i.e. not overly-talkative and miss crucial dialogue and not motionless silence with no expressions), so great job for that! And the natural humor between you two is hilarious! 😂I feel like we'd all be friends because I have the same thoughts as both of you and you voice it a mere second after I think it (minus Emily's blasphemous choice of Shia Lebeouf as Leroy??? TF 😒smh lol). Anyway, great video, as always! Big fan 🙌🏾
@@JustSUMMReactions It's my pleasure, and I always look forward to what you will be reacting to next, especially when it's a film I know so that I can share the same reactions as Matthew when I know Emily's is going to bust out laughing when it gets to that part and we're both stifling our laughter (even though I don't have to because I'm not sitting next to her 😂) Keep up the great work! Oh, and since I know you love Eddie Murphy movies I will be so quick to watch if you react to "Boomerang" or "Harlem Nights" because I know Emily will pass out laughing from either of them! lol
I had been in martial arts for a year or two when this movie came out. It inspired me to learn how do do that jump spin kick he uses at the end. And I did!
My choice of cast for a 21st century remake of The Last Dragon would be: Leroy Green - Alfred Enoch (if we're going with a similar look, athletic, boyish face, innocence) Laura Charles - Andrea Bordeaux (not a Vanity lookalike by a mile but drop dead gorgeous, nonetheless) ShoNuff - Aaron Pierre (tall, imposing, and could rock big hair like the original actor had). That's all I could think of for now. Might edit this to update later.
OMG, I know Andrea from a Black women's hair forum I joined way back in 2006. Met her in person at a New York meetup some years after that. She's even more gorgeous in person, and very sweet.
I love that you had so much fun watching one of my favorite childhood films. I remember being a kid thinking my mother was in this film since she looked a lot like Vanity. 😂
The first time I saw this, it was played on cable TV around lunchtime, while I was on summer vacation from school. I had 10 minutes before it started, so I decided to heat up a can of Campbell's chicken noodle soup to prepare. It was my first attempt at cooking on my own, and I set the heat too low. It ended up taking longer to heat up, so I missed the first maybe 20 minutes, except for a few moments I took my eyes off the stove. So I came in, right at the very end of the theater scene, and watched the rest, and LOVED IT! Then i saw it again from the start, and felt like the whole plot & resolution would have been spoiled by Sho'Nuff's speech in the theater. I was glad I missed that, the first time.
Delightful reaction! I've loved this movie forever. You gotta watch the great classic Bruce Lee movie Enter The Dragon now so you can comment on what they were all watching in this one.

I've been waiting for confirmation ever since.🥺
Vanity was supposed to be the lead in Princes Purple Rain, since she was one of his protégé, but she chose to do this film instead.
"I said, WHO'S THE MASTER?!"
"SHO NUFF!!!!!!"
I love that Emily loved this movie. I was 11 when this came out and fell in love with this movie immediately.
"I First thought of Laurence Fishburn as Leroy, but then I though Shia LaBeouf in blackface would be much better!" - Emily 2022 (I might have paraphrased a bit here)
This was my older brother's favorite movie. And it makes me so happy to see people discovering it.
I've got a soft spot for Mike Starr who plays Eddie's henchman, he's been in a lot of good stuff over the years.
Her "CATCH IT WIT' YO' TEEF!", followed by the glee? I feel like that was everyone's exact reaction when they saw that scene the first time.
One of the greatest films ever, and definitely the best villain in any movie ever.
Thank you. That is really all I can say.
THIS IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE, Classic
Emily should watch 'Enter The Dragon' now.
I mean honestly that should've come first. It enriches who Leroy is as a person to know who inspired him first hand.
See Reyes Jr fighting Sr., so cute! Great 80's movie! Been waiting for a reaction for this movie, did not disappoint! Thanks so much!
I am glad you liked this movie, it's one of my favorite 80s flicks! It's SO over the top with 80s cheese.
One of the greatest movies in the history of Cinema. Also Sho’Nuff is the greatest villain of all time.
- A friend of a friend ran into the actor who played Bruce Leroy at a convention several years back, and the dude was still in great shape.
- That SAME friend of a friend went on to create a karaoke company called "SHONUFF Entertainment", so he's a bit of a fan 😄
- EVERYONE had a crush on Vanity 6.
And I'm glad you took to it as much as the rest of us did growing up with it
RIP Vanity 🙏
Ohh, this movie!! Nothing but great, mindless fun! Also great to see Ernie Reyes Jr. In his acting debut. Also his dad, Ernie Reyes was in there as the guy he fought with wearing the camouflage outfit and did the pop locking kick move on. I saw this movie at a time in my youth when all my friends saw movies like they did say the beginning of the movie......sans the violence and the interrupting audience, but fun!
Ernie Ray has been the staple in martial Arts movies my entire life, so many roles he has played, in the rundown he lays a beat down on the rock
This movie is peak 80s cheesiness and I absolutely love it. And yes, the soundtrack is fire. I'd expect nothing less from Berry Gordy.
It's not "cheese".. its "camp".
@@DanJackson1977 I said what I said. Thanks, though.
This is actually my favorite movie of all time. Its so cheesy and the music is great, and it was just fun all around.
Truly great 80s gem. Too many people never even heard of it. Sho nuff is really all that needs to be said
This is a 10/10 for me.
Definitely a favorite of mine. Fun thing about Sho'Nuff for me, was that even though he was an antagonist he still was skilled enough for The Glow.
“I volunteer as tribute”. Lmao… Classic.
This movie has a special place in my heart. It was a favorite of my mother's.
I absolutely loved this movie growing up I was terrified of sho'nuff. His red glow freaked me out when I was young.
Super fuzz was the shit!
Sometimes movies are just supposed to be fun and this movie is pure joy.
This movie was 9 year old Me's entire wheelhouse; Martial Arts, Breakdancing, and Vanity. The most important character (double fist clench) Sho-Nuff, The Shogun of Harlem. I popped this tape ALOT. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Addendum: I've been laughing at "Dirty Books, I Found Them, I Found Them..." for far to long.
I Loved This Movie!!! Still Rewatch Whenever I Can!!! Glad You Enjoyed It Emily!!! It's A 10 For Me!!! Till Next Time!!! 💜💜💜💜
So.. Berry Gordy produced a few movies and a lot of them starred Diana Ross. I think you two would love The Wiz, if you haven't seen it already. So much fun and a superb soundtrack!
And The Apple
Ooooo, i forgot about the Wiz
lol when this popped up on my feed, I knew Emily was gonna have to say "Oh baby" or "Bless his heart" at least two or three times when it came to Leroy because he's so innocent
If you want to see Ernie Reyes Jr. kick ass as an adult, may I recommend The Rundown? It’s a really fun movie and I think The Rock’s first leading role.
"What's up Hip Hop?" Still my favorite Rock movie, and I'm still mad there hasn't been a sequel.
So glad to see other cultures of folk enjoy this gem. This movie had my community in a chokehold as kids and we never passed up an offer to watch it. My dad would literally get so mad at me for renting this from block buster when it was on HBO all the time 😂
The 80's threw up all over the movie. Its a fantastic movie from a fun time, what can go wrong. It is one of my favorite movies.
you guys are lovely. Emily had me in stitches and reminded me how i felt as a 13 year old when this came out. It’s not trying to be serious which is what it makes so fun and funny
This was a February treat on HBO growing up... I think I also had it recorded on a couple VHS.
Ernie Reyes Jr is a legend. He's from San Jose where I live I wish he still lived out here.
Big fan 🙌🏾
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Oh, and since I know you love Eddie Murphy movies I will be so quick to watch if you react to "Boomerang" or "Harlem Nights" because I know Emily will pass out laughing from either of them! lol
Yes Yes Yes. I requested this movie like a year ago. Cant believe its finally time. Now cant wait for you to see Short Circuit
I had been in martial arts for a year or two when this movie came out. It inspired me to learn how do do that jump spin kick he uses at the end. And I did!
My choice of cast for a 21st century remake of The Last Dragon would be:
Leroy Green - Alfred Enoch (if we're going with a similar look, athletic, boyish face, innocence)
Laura Charles - Andrea Bordeaux (not a Vanity lookalike by a mile but drop dead gorgeous, nonetheless)
ShoNuff - Aaron Pierre (tall, imposing, and could rock big hair like the original actor had).
That's all I could think of for now. Might edit this to update later.
OMG, I know Andrea from a Black women's hair forum I joined way back in 2006. Met her in person at a New York meetup some years after that. She's even more gorgeous in person, and very sweet.
I think the entire world's reaction to Shia LaBeouf playing Sho Nuff, would be, "Huh?" 😂😂
This is literally my second all time favorite movie ever created it’s truly a masterpiece timeless with an incredible soundtrack
I love that you had so much fun watching one of my favorite childhood films. I remember being a kid thinking my mother was in this film since she looked a lot like Vanity. 😂
I loved this as a kid and when it came out on dvd I watched it at least 3 times with the commentary track.
Sho-Nuff :P
A good follow-up film to see is "I'm gonna get you sucka" starring Keenan and Damon Wayans
Also with a banging soundtrack.
For re-casting, I'd go with Quinton Jackson for Sho'Nuff and Laurent Plancel for Leroy.
Edit: Oh, and for Eddie - James Spader!
You forgot Ernie had his own show as a kid. And Leroy was a real martial artist that tried acting
Delightful reaction! I've loved this movie forever. You gotta watch the great classic Bruce Lee movie Enter The Dragon now so you can comment on what they were all watching in this one.
Brings me joy to see others enjoying this film. So much fun.
