      Good video, it's also a good idea to pre fill the oil filter as well.

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joshbenway7109 that makes sense given the oil filter is not in a downward or sideways configuration. Can better insure the oil capacity is being met, thanks for taking the time to share a tip!

      Should not the car be lowered to a level position before checking the oil level?

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liadbar-el8570 I don't understand the question in relation to the video. I don't check the oil level, but I do check for leaks. Car does not need to be level to check for leaks. For an oil change, I typically do not check the level as I know how much oil was put in the car, but if you had to check the level a flat surface would be best but would have a negligible effect on the reading unless your car is sitting at a high degree of angle

    Went to a oil lube type place for the first time as a 18 y/o since i didn't have equipment or knowledge(living on a hill didn't help, could roll easily i think). They did the job however after about 1,000 miles oil light went on and 30 seconds later check engine went on too. Raced home to find out my engine didn't have much oil. Turns out the filter wasn't tightened up letting oil drain out slowly, had to park my car for a couple days thanks to that, currently trying to fix it with family.
    Now I'll just learn how to do my own shit, thanks for showing us how and having a good shot of the layout.

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Appreciate the sub! And refilling the oil filter is your choice. It helps the engine not start on a short dry startup, but typical factory manuals only call for it if your timing belt tensioner is oil pressure activated. In many cars, the oil filter is installed sideways or "upside down" and pre fill is not an option like my 1995 EG Civic

    Another idea : If someone is a first-timer, perhaps they don't have to take out the first drain plug from the oil pan. They just have to take out the filter. 80%+ of the oil will drain out anyway. The remaining old oil is too little to matter as it mixes with the new oil, and thus removing only one of the two possible drain points is sufficient for a first-timer. That way, the whole thing is less intimidating for the first-timer. They can do both the second time around.
    Or does only 50% drain if you do the filter first? In that case, nevermind.

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's a possibility, but I'd argue removing the oil filter is often tougher than removing drain plug haha. Given the relative simplicity of an oil change I'd advise draining from the drain slot to get it done.

    Very well done, thanks! I especially appreciated the info on the jacking points.
    Can you provide any tips on how you lower the car onto the jackstands, that looks a little tricky to line up.
    Also, do your jackstands have a slot in them where they support the car?

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes, typically I will line up the jacket stands on a reinforced portion of side skirt or underneath a main car frame member (beefy steel tube or channel). The jack can be released slowly to lower car slow. Yes the jacket stands typically have a crescent shape or shallow "U" shape to allow cupping of supported member. Hope that helps! No problem, those jacks are from Walmart or Harbor Freight. Fairly basic no need to break the bank as long as the catch mechanism is solidly made. The jack is craftsman brand their 3 ton jack. It's a nice jack, purchased a few years ago during Black Friday for around $60. Sears are out of business around my way so it may be tough to find if there isn't a Sears open near you. I also use a harbor freight low profile jack for lowered vehicles. It's a good jack as well, but it's hit or miss if the box will have all the lock washers! Only complaint about Harbor Freight items. I had to return to store to get all pieces, but after that it's been great and has held up well.

    Is it a necessity to replace the filter and the washer on the plug during each oil change?

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The filter yes everytime. The washer you are supposed to change everytime to avoid possible leak at drain plug but if I forget to pick up a washer I'll reuse old washer. Not the end of the world and rare you'll see a leak. If it does leak though you've wasted an oil change since you'll have to redrain pan. Small risk though

    • @EngineeredMojo
      @EngineeredMojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I typically put in a 1/4 of a quart under the specified oil capacity given there will always be a small amount of left over oil in the engine. Then I double check level level with the oil dipstick to verify amount of oil in the vehicle. You don't need to be exact, but you don't want to be short or over by a large amount.
