Just because it's based off an old Soviet design doesn't mean the Chinese cannot fix the existing negative parts and put new systems to it. A fighter jet is still a fighter jet that has weapons to destroy other jets.
This is true indeed. Many have downplayed China's ability to produce their own but in reality, if a system or design works, there's really no need for someone to go create a new one just to prove they're better. The J-16/15 maybe a derivative of the Su-27 but it is still a modernized Su-27 with better stuff in it. It is safe to say that if and IF China were to acquire the F-35 or Su-58 they maybe able to create a better derivative off of them and create the ultimate version for said aircraft...

J-16 is like a F-15EX, a ultra modernized fighter based on an old airframe.... J16's WS10B has similar output to Su35's AL41 plus J16 uses more composite materials so performance should be better than Su35.... I really don't see J20 and J31/35 will jeopardize J16 program as the former 2 are air dominance fighters whilst J16 is a multirole and EW... also J11, 15, 16 techs are interchangeable as they're of same airframe.....
Also you need to have a high low mix of aircraft.

Difference is flanker airframe is much better than f15 airframe. Much more capable. Flanker airframe can be used for long long time, unlike f15 which is not as capable and smaller.

Personally, I think that the design of the Russian flanker fighter is better than the US F15 It is only Russia that has not done a good job in avionics systems and shared data links
The SU27 and Mig29 are better than the F15 and F16 but Russia isn’t advanced in avionics and manufacturing compared to the US. Imagine a Su30, Su35 and Mig35 built by Lockheed and Martin.

If anything, Russian fighters are known to carry the most powerful and effective electronic and counter-electronic warfare systems and the best radars. They can blind even AWACS radars and defeat air to air missile locks so it would be a bad idea to challenge one of these jets in aerial combat.
Well, the J16D have been upgraded to AMG/Brabus standard.
the new j-16 use engine FWS-10 same with new j-20,the maximum reheat thrust 144kN,the main technical source is CFM56

J16 just looks like a Soviet flanker. Its fuselage and its flight control, airborne electronic equipment, radar, engine and attached weapons are all redesigned and produced in China. Perhaps China has advertised for Sukhoi Design Bureau.

Based on the j11a, the j11b was produced using composite materials, replacing the engine and avionics. The su30mkk was imported from Russia. The j16 was developed by combining the j11b and su30mkky.

The Chinese J-16 may have better radar , electronic, weapon than the Russian , but the air frame is still base on the original Su-27 UB Trainer or their Su-30MKK , The Russian Su-35 's air frame has been modified much more extensive , the Su-35 doesn't use the large mechanical air Brake , they re-organized the fighter's internal structure for more efficiency and more additional function.
The Chinese J-16 still retain the large Air-brake at the back , the J-16 air frame is confine to the original Su-27's spec and limitation .
It actually uses much more composite material saving some 700kg. This makes its thrust to weight ratio even better than any Russian version.

The J-16 is shorter than the su-27 and has an integrated fuselage, which means it has a longer lifespan.
I remember in the early 2000s, china stopped the j11a production after roughly 90 units.
The plaaf evaluated the planes and found the combat capability limited due to the outdated avionics and weaponry from the Russians.
They developed it to the J11b which not only had a modernized bigger HUD but more advanced avionics with a total of 3 to 4 mfds, indigenous AAMs which looked more like the sparrows and amraams than the russian ones.
The concept plane at the end of this video made me say "ace combat" 😅
The Chinese are pragmatists. They found that the aerodynamic shape of the SU-27 was indeed very good, so there was no need to change it. However, they equipped the J16 with very advanced avionics, radar, and engines.

My stand is very clear. The actual result will determine who is the clear WINNER. It is the pilot to determine the hardware use in confrontation with enemy and not the hardware comparison will be decided the end result.
Well, the pilot's role is actually diminishing, one can't do much if he was being spotted first and shot down.
We'll see if the new J-15 T is up to the task. ESPECIALLY the durability of the engines. The US Navy is far along in its development of its Gen. 6 fighter and CCA drones.

Except the aerodynamic, J16 have almost everything designed and produced in China. For those who still think J16 lack of engine power, J16’s old engine is already replaced by the new WS-10 engine, which has similar or somewhere better performance than SU35’s AL41.
China doesn’t have a engine performance issue they can generate enough power the issue they have is longevity of service life due to them being slightly behind in advanced metallurgy tech but they are catching up

J16 should be compare to Su 30 not su 35.
Su 30 is equipped with a PESA While J16 and Su35 are both AESA equipped so J16 should be compared to Su35

The J-16 was based off the flanker, and so was the SU-35, but China is still importing the SU-35.
They still have a little way to go, but they're getting there.
I believe they have now solved the problem they had with fatigue in the infrastructure.

The F-15 is a 1969 design, originally.
It has produced a couple of variants, but not in the same league as what's being made now.
The J-20 is closer in performance to the SU-35 than the J-17 ever will be.
The Chinese have only just got over a hurdle involving premature fatigue in the air frame which imposed a very short life on any plane it produced.
And Russia is not behind in electronics: where do you get that delusion from?

though the aero dymanic design of cy35 is better than J16 in many small but critical area, J16 can fly little better than cy35 at most times, because the poor metrial and lack of critical heavy industrial equipment of russia fedration after ussr break up, the cy35 are at least 1000kg heavier than J16, and many viewer think the actual number will be around 2500kg, J16 used much better frame metrial and much better process, and used much more compositive metrial including carbon fibre, and also the eletronic device are at least hundreds kilo less heavier than those russian stuff on cy35, but much better

the way to solve these problems is still simple but rely on national avation industry, china simply replace the frame with advanced metrial, 3D-print the critical parts, and simply replaced the russian elextronic devices

Chinses weapons hv never been tested in battle. They are not battle harden unlike Russians. When tested in battle u see the vulnerabilities and fix them accordingly.

The Sukhoi is better. The J-16 lacks the powerful engines that SU-30’s possess.
Why can’t China come up with an original design? They even copied ‘Top Gun’.
The J-20 is their first real attempt, and it’s outstanding. The front Canards are its main issue as far as Stealth goes. It is also underpowered like most Chinese Aircraft. For whatever reason, China cannot build powerful, dependable, modern engines.
You’d think they’d copy one by now, (They copy everything) but that is a serious problem they need to address.

Chinese engines aren’t underpowered at all the ws-10b used on j-16 are more powerful than most russian engines and even as powerful as most comparable western engines the issue is longevity the service life is shorter but they are improving really quickly. They even started installing ws-10 engines on carrier based j-15 s so that gives you a clue. This isn’t the cold war era any more the Chinese are ahead of Russians in military technology
