Russia first proposed the SU-30MKI to China, but China was not interested, so Russia recommended it to India. For so many years, the SU-30MKI has been trying to improve the avionics, radar level, but has not been smooth. In addition to its appearance, the J-16's avionics, radar, and data link are all standard for fifth-generation aircraft. These are two eras of fighter aircraft, there is no comparison.

But now China has solved the problems of materials and lifespan for the engine! The lifespan testing of the WS-15 prototype has exceeded 50000 hours and is still ongoing. The Indian Air Force is a deep sleeping Air Force. The Indian Air Force is 10 years behind its counterpart. The Indian Air Force started the Super Sukhoi program in 2015, in which the Su-30 was to be upgraded to modern standards, but so far the AESA radar, long-range missiles, electronic warfare suite, digital cockpit, MWR etc components have not been integrated in Su-30 MKI.

So if you want more details about SU-30MKI ready a paper called Asians advanced Flankers by Carlo Kopp and Trishul Trident Blog spot by Prasun K. Sengupta
In the Within Visual range, I don't think the comparison is proper because MICA IR is not a dedicated close combat missile, it is a medium range Imaging Infrared missile, similar to Russian R-27T missiles but with better sensor and performance. In WVR, which is normally 20km or lower, it is as effective as any modern IR missiles may be slightly better than Chinese PL-10. But just because it has higher range doesn't make it better because on that range, J-16 can actually use their Active radar guided missiles like PL-12 and PL-15 which will always offer better performance on longer than 30km targetting range, as >30km normally falls under BVR, not WVR. You need to consider how it performs in short ranges against the enemey's short range missile which in this case, almost similar, based on the specification in the video.
I guess the best WVR is Python 5 it's a scary missile in close range I watched the video about this missile they say even the missile misses the enemy in first attempt the missile will come back to hit the target again 🤷🏽♂️
Because MICA-IR is infrared homing missile , it can be launched passively (not using radar) and thus no RWR notification would be given to the enemy aircraft , so its entirely dependent on the tactical situation of the engagement and the pilot's skills

Yes, Upgradation is urgently needed on Su 30 MKI and it should be a continuous process as long IAF wants to keep these large nos. of fighters as frontline fighters till 2035 & beyond.
5 numbers of fighters can be transferred to ADA & HAL for all required modernization possible on it in different phase as fast as possible. like
(1) Changing of present radar with Uttam AESA radar already manufactured for SU30 MKI. Electronic EW suit ,Jammer, Missile warning suit.
(2) Putting of Radar wave absorbing on Skin or where ever possible.
(3) Upgradation of long range & short range Missiles in such a way that this warplane must have an edge always to it's opponents.
(4) Better engines if at all required for better thrust to weight ratio.
(5) If air intakes can be made serpentine towards center like Eurofighter, it may suppress these fan blades seen openly, to minimize RCS. Though it will be a major structural change can
be taken as last priority.

@defence matrix left out the facts that su-30 mki has been tested with both asraam and python -5 if equipped su-30mki both these wvr missiles have high offboresite capabilities, high g maneuvering capabilities and most importantly lock on before launch/lock on after launch capabilities which would give su-30mki an edge over j-16 in wvr combat and also along mica-(ir) which could do well in both wvr as well as bvr.
Su 30 MKI has not been tested with ASRAAM and Python missile, it will be tested with ASRAAM missile only.

Chinese J-11 B and J-16 Have very powerful AESA radar, J-16's radar is even better than Su-57's radar, the IRST sensor and avionics are also better derived from avionics of 5th generation J-20, RCS is less than RCS of Su-30 MKI (20m2) because of usage of composite materials and radar adsorbent material

I read an article in which it was mentioned that the rcs of su 30mki is not 20 m2 . It is more like propaganda real rcs would be close to 4m2. But again I am not in the security committee to verify anything. 20 m2 date came because an Indian reporter once mentioned it there is no proper evidence .

I am a Chinese very happy to watch this video with you, our country also bought a lot of Russian Su 30 MKK fighters, It used to be our most powerful plane, until we had the J-16, Our domestic pilots have commented that the Su 30 MKK and J-16 are not the same generation aircraft, The two look similar but electronic equipment radar weapons and so on are very different, but you MKI also have many upgrades that we do not know, China now mainly produces the J-16 and J-20, both of which are currently in service with more than 300 aircraft Finally hope that world peace away from war🎉

Modernization is taking place and a lot of equipment is already modernized it takes time for a force as big as ours to fully modernize we are taking around 500 billion usd if memory serves (said by some important officer rank i forgot who tho)

Defense Matrix, you keep saying Su30mki fired R-77-1. While it can, IAF DOES NOT HAVE R-77-1’s in its inventory. India only operates RVV-AE which is the export variant of the R-77. IAF does NOT have R-77-1’s. I have researched quite a lot and have found no evidence of IAF possessing any R-77-1’s. Please fix that point.

Su 30 is almost 20yrs old is and ageing. Mk2 will take at least 12-15 years. Amca is still 2-3 decades away. 3-4 Squardons of F35 would be the best bet for tilting the balance in favour.
US has not officially made any announcement about it's F-35A offer to India, so we can't make strategies based on speculations

Certainly J16 is superior to Sukhoi 30 MKI. However, lot depends on the skill levels of the combat pilots. There have been instances during WW2 and also during 1971 India Pakistan war when fighters(allied forces in WW2 and Indian forces in 1971) perceived to be inferior shot down superior fighters(German in WW2 and Pakistan in 1971). Now the question is whose combat pilots ave better skills? India or China ?
India needs to have a cyber security regiment. It should shield sensitive institutions from cyber attacks as well as carry out counter attacks on the enemy.
Godi use them to attack the opposition instead of enemies.

- And lastly the Best weapon package on the planet. Astra MK3 and Python 5.

J-16 airframes are new. All Su-30MKI airframes are 15+ years old, what’s the point to upgrade old airframes?
I believe that HAL & DRDO should come up with their own Su-30mki variant like how china has come up with their j-16 where DRDO should increase the composite material & indigenous engin along with power full aesa radar in addition to it a specific variant for EW

We can make a composite material su30mki as we have donw with tejas. And make electronic warfare system testbed like j16. So we will have tejas mk2 , tedbf, amca and su30 mk1 composite for our 4.5 gen and 5th gen fighters.

Isn't J-16 a newer jet compared to Su-30 MKI? I think for J-16 should be better compared to Su-35. J-16 got introduced in 2016 while Su-30 MKI in 2002 so ofc J-16 would be better now saying that we have a large number of Su-30 MKI and we need to work on super sukhoi soon.

J16 platform is much newer than the Su30Mki , it has been built keeping in mind the latest generation of F15SE and Su35. Su30mki is level and can surpass J11, F15E and Su27 - the older platforms. The Su30mki, really need those Super Sukhoi upgrades.
Now looking at J16 specifications alone - its worse than the Tejas Mk1A in every aspect, except maybe in combat range .
Tejas MK1A will be the lead interceptor surpassing all Russian origin platforms of IAF once inducted into services to counter rival F16 , J10 as well as J16.

There is no doubt that the new generation active phased array radar and weapons equipped by the J-16 are much better than the SU 30 MKI. The SU30MKI is better than the previous SU 27MKK and SU30MKK of the Chinese Air Force, but it is now old. The latest official pictures It shows that the J-16 can carry the ultra-long-range PL17. Previously, they could carry the PL15 and PL10. The PL15 has a range of more than 200 kilometers, and the PL17 has a range of more than 300 kilometers. The PL10 is a high-mobility short-range combat missile.
Is only PL-10 missile for J-16? This video is quite new 2 weeks ago so professionals should not avoid PL-12(70-100KM), PL-15(200-300KM), even PL-17(400KM). It is hard to believe China has only the sir-to-air missile range for 20km.
I agree that J-16 is by far the better one but we need to do something to overcome these small missing things. Maybe with some minor updates.

On the one hand u r saying much details are not available for j- 16 ,and on the other hand , u r declaring J-16 is the winner , how hypothetical.
We have compared both the aircraft with available details only. There should be no doubt that J-16 is better as it is a modern aircraft and got benefitted from the J-20s development. In this comparison video we tried to point out, where we can improve the Su-30MKI which can help us match J-16.

Su-30mki is becoming obsolete. It was a great platform 10-15 years back, but not anymore. Need AESA radar, missiles like Astra MK2 AND MK3 to negate its disadvantage from higher cross section and detection range and proliferation of PL-15E with Pakistan. It also need upgraded cockpit and sensors and RAM coating. And we need these upgrades in one go in a program, not one by one over 25 years till they retire. It should ideally also receive AL-41 in a seperate deal to increase its T/W and agility.
Bro this upgradation process takes time, it can't be made overnight, also DRDO is talking time for developing radar, avionics, sensors etc which is quite natural since we have no prior experience. We can't expect for quick results
@@AnirbanSarkar203 I am not blaming DRDO. First time it will take time. But national security cannot wait. India has 260 Su-30MKI's. Let's at least start the upgrade with the first 130 with foreign engines, AESA radar, long range missiles (R-37M), plus desi cockpit, mission computer and RWR and RAM coating, and upgrade them over next 7-8 years. Then the next 130 with foreign engine, but Indian radar (Uttam Mk3), long range missiles (Astra Mk2 and Mk3), cockpit, mission computer, RWR, RAM coating over the next 6-7 years so that all are upgraded in the next 14 years. Is it that difficult? Or India does not have money for this? Or somebody in their thick head is relaxing thinking China will wait to attack India?
The current plant is only upgrading with RWR. That'll hardly a "Super-Sukhoi" and will not make a world of difference when facing against J-10, Su-35 or J-16 of China or even J-10 of Pakistan in BVR. Then perhaps another program to equip with AESA radar. In this way, the whole upgrade will take 25 years and then it will be time for the aircraft to retire.

One thing we must note. Whenever China sends fighter aircrafts towards Taiwan they always send Su30mkk. Why so if they are confident about their own fighters? Another factor, all Chinese aircrafts will have to cross Himalaya for effectively engaging IAF. This may hamper their performance. I think we should go for more Awacks to detect Chinese aircrafts from a long distance.

China has a bigger radar in terms of the size of the aircraft, China uses indigenously made avionics and engines while India relies heavily on Russia. Spent a lot of money on military purchases.

Firstly goverment need to spent money and upgrade our su at least 100 of them firstly an aesa radar al 41 engine and we should make our su electronic suit comparable to rafale like j16 can detect su from al least 50 to 60 before su mki can no and with no maws i think it would be difficult for su to evade these missile at the end su 30 is not combact ready to fight against mordern 4.5 by any means
