Thank you for allowing me to see/ know what to do! It's to hard trying to trim all of my (small) Chihuahuas nails, especially the dewclaw, without fear of cutting the quick which may draw Willy against me doing his nails!
Hi there pet parent! We have a hard grinder head for the tougher nails as well! If you are still having a hard time grinding them down we recommend using a nail clipper first if they are really long and then go in with the grinder.
1. Run your finger under the nail: a dewclaw needs trimming when it catches or hooks your finger. 2. Trim it back only until your finger slides off it easily. If you cut too far you will cause pain and bleeding. 3. Use dog nail grinder and make a quick, precise and confident cut.
On my dog, I stay away from the "quick" by about 4mm. It is cruel to cut closer. You would simply have to cut the toenails more often, but your dog will appreciate it.
Get a Kong. Stuff it with treats. Top with peanut butter. Freeze it. Someone holds the Kong while someone else trims the nails. He will be so busy with the frozen peanut butter you'll get those nails trimmed.

I have a grinder like that and it takes forever to grind it down. I’m going to get the round sandpaper and see how that works.

I didn’t see any dewclaws done- or I may have missed it! Either way, how do you hold a “floppy” dewclaw for trimming? Thanks! 😊

Mine runs away from ANYTHING that makes a noise, won't let me hold his feet at the best of times.
