*7.25.20 UPDATE: MY K&N FIPK SYSTEM IS CREATING LEAN CONDITIONS IN CLOSED LOOP (NON-WOT). I DID NOT KNOW THIS WHEN I PUBLISHED THIS VIDEO. I LEARNED THIS BY USING A VEEPEAK WIFI OBD SCANNER/DATA LOGGER AND THE CAR SCANNER PRO APP.*
Borla ProXS Mufflers for Lexus GS400, GS430 and GS300: amzn.to/2D5ADHt
These are some clips of the different mods I have done to my 1998 Lexus GS400 and what they sound(ed) like. The final configuration shown in the video is as follows:
-K&N FIPK intake kit *NO LONGER RECOMMENDED ON THIS VEHICLE! IT RUNS WAY TOO LEAN WITH IT!*
-1st muffler (after cats) removed. Yes, this is a muffler, not a cat, at least on the GS400. 2" pipe installed where the muffler was.
-Both resonators removed, 2" pipes installed.
-Both stock mufflers removed, Borla ProXS mufflers installed (part # 40346). This is the cheapest install option since they practically fit in the stock locations with minimal fab work.
The only other "performance" mod done to the car (in terms of engine or drivetrain) is turning the transmission dial all the way up to III. Check out ClubLexus.com for more info on that. I noticed a very slight difference in the firmess of shifts.

I put the ProXS mufflers with 2” on my GS430. Deleted the resonators and left the third muffler on. Sounds like a gentleman’s rig until you jump on it and the 3UZ’s angry rasp shows itself. Love the setup for being under the radar when you need it. Love it!
Good choice! I kind of miss those sport exhaust sound days tbh.
Nice sound on the GS. Sold me on the borlas!
Looking forward to more videos like this 💯 love it as a gs400 owner myself
just ordered the borlas, i am shout you out in te COVID-19 release i will do when they get here...appreciate you bro
Right on! Can’t wait to hear them. Be sure to do a huge burnout, LOL.
Where can I order them too?
Got mine on Amazon.
Nice I just picked up a 99 lexus gs 400 in excellent condition with 120k miles for $2500! I'm so excited to start fixing it up.
That’s a major score!
I too found me a GS400 and have watched your bids GREAT BUILD and keep it.
Thanks alot for the Helpful tips, awesome video 👏👏
Anytime. Thanks for watching.
I ran an Injen c/a intake in my 430, and really was disappointed. Only at high RPMS did I notice any "go" in the acceleration. All along I knew I was not getting the performance that I had when I was simply running the K&N air filter. So I took it out, and reinstalled the K&N. Upon restart, I gave it some gas, and a huge puff of carbon buildup blew out of the exhaust. And right out the gate, I immediately noticed the difference in power/ acceleration.
this is awesome bro keep uploading!
I like I'm going with this set up on my GS430
I'm looking to get the mufflers
This is SICK!
Hello. Thank you for putting together these videos. I bought a black 1998 Lexus GS400 a few months ago with 105k on it and love it. So far I’ve installed K&N intake and put on some 2016 Lexus RC300 19” wheels with low profile tires. I have front and rear sway bars on order. Up next is exhaust. I love the sound of your Borla exhaust. Question, did you gain any horsepower/torque with the new exhaust? I look forward to hearing back from you.
Awesome! 105K? Wow, your GS4 is just getting broken in! Sounds like you are well on your way with mods. I didn’t notice a power gain with exhaust because I did it in small stages. If I did it all at once then I probably would have felt it a bit. Expect 5whp from exhaust. But the sound is what I was really after. :). Thanks for watching. LMK if you have more questions. God bless!
Thanks for posting a new video of front lip install. Nicely done. My birthday is coming up on St. Patrick’s Day and my wife ordered me the borla proxs mufflers. I am super excited. I bought some magnaflow exhaust tips and I plan on removing the resonators/small muffler like you did. I’m looking forward to the install. I hope you have a great weekend.
Really like the sound of these. I have the exact same setup but Topspeed Pro catback with high flow resonators and now no mufflers. I have a lot of drone now but this is my option when my ears can’t handle it anymore lol. And also eliminating the resonators completely. My exhaust guy said he wouldn’t chop them because of back pressure reasons. Well your car sounds good to me lol. I doubt i’ll hear my new K&N intake lol. Finally what tips did you go with Christian? thanks
Back pressure is a total misnomer. I can’t believe exhaust pros still talk about it. Scavenging is the real issue. Will the exhaust “pull” the last combustion cycle out, or will the next “injection” run into part of the last explosion? Open headers make the most power. Plain and simple. The question is where that power is made and is it on a street car? The OEM resonators flow really well. Perhaps better or the same in some regards than straight pipes in those spots. Seems weird to me that he’s worried about back pressure by doing that. Scavenging is the real question. Anyway, just my experience after spending way too much money trying to piece together a system that sounds good. LOL
Great video! I’m thinking of going with these same mufflers, but if I leave the resonators and post cat mufflers in, will there be much of a difference with the borla mufflers?
It will be very subtle. A slight sport sound, especially from outside the vehicle. Inside you won’t hear much. You’re focusing in the right spots. Sound adjustments are strictly made at the muffler locations on these cars. I wasted a ton of money trying to chase sound with resonators and stuff. What you could do is get 2.25 axle back mandrel bent into 2.25 Borla ProXS in/out mufflers to 4” slanted tips. That would sound great I bet. 👍
Nice video. I have a gs400 and could never find the right Borlas. Thanks
You're welcome. I had a heck of a time too. So I thought I'd make a vid to help others out.
This settles it Borla XS on my LS400
Working on my new 98 GS400 and loving your videos. Curious what made you go with the 40346? If I'm removing the old cats to open pipes, should I go the same route? Thanks and Aloha!
Hello! I went with 40346 because it fit in the stock pipe location well and they were quiet (no drone). I have since changed my exhaust setup 3 times, 🤣. You’ll see my fairly recent TOO LOUD vid. Well after that I had to quiet the car down. It sounded like 500+HP and obviously was not. I didn’t want to be a poser and I didn’t want cops for miles knowing I was coming. Now it’s quieter and can be loud when I’m on it, but it does still drone at times. Honestly, cutouts are probably where it’s at but I can’t pass inspection here with them. 🤬. Anyway, thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions.
@@ForwardMomentum good to know!! I want a sexy aggressive growl with zero droning myself lol. Once cats are out, that may be a challenge! Lol
I wish I could get one of these in a manual transmission. Also, we have the GS300. I like the V8. Had an LS400 I regret selling.
You and me both! Pretty cool they have conversion kits now though. An entire kit with everything is about $4200. A 6spd manual would make a car so much fun!
You have other issues, those FIPK systems are plug and play.
Nope. Even K&N agreed with me and gave me a full refund. Car has been great ever since going to stock system.

@@ForwardMomentum Ok, but guys have had that set up in there 400's for years with out any issues, to include myself. Too bad it didnt work out.
That’s what I’m saying though. It totally whacks out the closed loop fuel trims. Sometimes it’s not enough to trigger a DTC. People shouldn’t base whether something works or not off a DTC. Log your STFTs and get back to me. This engine simply hates that intake. Maybe you get 10HP between 5K-6K RPM, but what’s the sacrifice? I loved the sound and the concept of the FIPK, but K&N didn’t do their homework on this one.
Any check engine light with resonator delete?
No. I’ll have another exhaust vid in a month. It’s insanely loud now. LOL
After deleting the resonators and first muffler was there alot of drone in the cabin?
Negative. None. Too quiet for me actually.
Is the tone deep?
Ichi DaKilla I think so.
Hello I have a 99 gs 400 and I'm thinking of buying these and deleting everything like you did but does this affect passing a smog check?
I cannot speak for inspection checks in your specific area (you’ll need to check local regs), but the only thing that would effect smog is if you had a GS430. Those have a cat in that 3rd position. The GS3 and GS4 do not; it’s just a muffler on those.
Hey Mr. Forward Momentum. My '98 GS400 is straight piped after the cats, it drones too much and is too obnoxious with wide-open throttle, I'm thinking of getting the Borla PRO XS mufflers like you. Is the drone bearable on the highway? The drone is just embarrassing when I have passengers with me driving on the highway.
Especially driving in auto mode, the transmission likes to stay at 2k RPM and that's when it drones the worse because it just stays at 2k RPM under mild acceleration :(
I hear you on this! Yes, the Borlas will quiet it down a ton and eliminate the drone. They were too quiet for me, but no drone at all. I run race bullets right now and the car still drones 1900-2100.
@@ForwardMomentum thank you!!!
@@ForwardMomentum I had a muffler and resonator delete and it was a little too droney. I bought two Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonators and put them on and it still drones like crazy around 2k rpm but it is quieter. I'm sad because i wasted $320 though... whole reason was to make the drone go away.
Believe me, I’ve been there. I spent like $1200 on my stupid exhaust over the years. I should have simply spent $200 and replaced the mufflers and put $1K towards my SC’r. Oh well.
@@ForwardMomentum I think we all share the same pain here gentlemen…. Now the borla is too quiet lol
The only thing left to do is intake from Tundra!
I need headers and a SC’r!
i put these on all my vehicles
I previously did as well.
Can you give me the part number for the K&N Intake? I already have Greddy Evo 2s on mine and it's not that loud so I might just add an intake for it to sound a little meaner.
1heavyhitters1 hey - my next episode reviews the K&N FIPK specifically. So you may want to wait. If you’re good with losing a little power under 4K RPM and gaining 5-9 HP/TQ from 4K-6K then here you go: PN 57-9011
@@ForwardMomentum thanks! I took both the resonators earlier and it sounds a bit beefier. Wonder if adding the intake would make it sound a little bit louder.
1heavyhitters1 absolutely. It screams under load and at WOT. I will have some clips of the car coming at you WOT. Should be fun! :)
Hi. Quick question. What made you go with the borlas over a muffler delete?
Sorry, just saw this comment. Unfortunately it came down to vehicle inspection and legality. Where I live I still have to pass inspection and the law requires that I have mufflers. I already had the 3rd muffler removed and both resonators removed so, in all honesty, deleting both mufflers may have been a bit much for my taste.
Also are you on Facebook by any chance I follow some gs group that I think would benefit from having you as a member
LMK what the group is called and I’ll check it out. Thanks.

I just requested to join. Thx!

You probably don’t even need the intake, the original air inlet is right at the front of the hood. If it’s not routed from there pulling air you may be losing lots off power.
orangejuiceneggs on the dyno it adds about 6 peak whp while only losing a couple HP at low rpm. The tq increase was about 10 and I did feel it. The VVTi changeover is much more pronounced. In the end you’re probably right though. For the money, the mod isn’t for everyone and it really needs to be coupled with an AFR because the car can run lean in hot weather. Thanks for commenting.
@@ForwardMomentum Check out Hks supercharger, im not sure for that year but they do make it for lexus.
