Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among US adolescents. The alarming prevalence of drunk driving among young drivers is a key factor. This study explores the relationship between the age of onset of alcohol drinking and drunk driving among adolescents in the US. Sample participants are 9th-12thgrade adolescents aged 13-17 (N = 6756) in the US. Data were retrieved from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized to explore the relationship between early drinking behavior and drunk driving among adolescents. Overall, the mean age of the participants is 15.6; 2.1% of adolescents in the sample admitted to having driven drunk at least once. Hispanic, older adolescents, and males had a greater prevalence of drunk driving (p0.05). The result revealed a significant association between the age of onset of alcohol consumption and drunk driving behavior among U.S. adolescents. Adolescents who reported drinking alcohol at an earlier age (before age 13) were significantly more likely to report driving under the influence of alcohol compared to their peers who initiated drinking at a later age (p 0.01). School-based alcohol awareness programs for adolescents from an early grade with active parental and teacher engagement are recommended. Further studies are warranted to develop a comprehensive intervention program focused on promoting awareness and adherence to regulations among adolescents.
