@@AlejandroGonzalez-ej4lp I think of that as similar to Dipper and Wendy from Gravity Falls. It could never work, the characters know it could never work (even if they don’t say it), but it still exists. I can’t speak to the writer’s motives for it though, so that’s just speculation.

I agree. In a world that's enamored with romance - or every friendship always evolving into romance - I always took the shows title literally, even as a middle schooler. It even lead to me appreciating other sorts of stories/conflicts beyond the few romantic ones (conflicts between siblings especially, being the middle child in my family). There's nothing wrong with a girl growing up and only wanting close, trustworthy friends/family in her life. That is rewarding in itself.
Though I am a big time shipper, I have no problem with the show's general avoidance of romantic topics because, overall, everything else it offered was more than sufficient. Like you said, the few times that it does delve into that field, it executes it properly. Any time I feel down that there was not more romance in the show, I just go to FimFiction to fill in that hole in my heart. I am also equally glad that the 'lovey dovey' rule was not thrown out the window because, as we have seen in the past, shipping and romance can ruin a show; an example being 'Star vs the Forces of Evil'.

It's not even cartoons that had this problem. It's in nonanimated shows like the arrow verse shows as well. Ironically I seemed to like the idea of a few ships before they made the ships official. I used to love the felicity character but then she and Oliver both became so annoying when they did get together, because the writers seem to think that the only interesting couples are the ones full of drama. I'm with you, its better off left in fanfic.
I actually liked the Rarity and Prince Blueblood gag in the Best Night Ever episode, it was one of the ones that stood out more to me, but I get it if others don't haha.
One thing I've always felt is that in a show about characters with _very_ strong personalities, it's improbable that they would develop a romantic relationship with anybody that isn't specifically tailored to be their love interest. Rainbow and AJ is the perfect example. The characters we see before The Last Problem would NEVER date each other. They're both way too headstrong, career focused and do not compliment each other even a little. Trying to develop that relationship in the middle of the show would either A: Feel forced and unnatural, or B: Take too long for watchers to remain invested. BUT, have them be developed off-screen into different characters, suddenly putting them together is fine. Also, one thing that seperates MLP from a lot of other kids' shows is that the main characters are _adults_ . They're going to have a wider perspective of their lives and what they desire, and they're not cauldrons of hormones.
not something i ever thought about much while watching the show throughout my life, but this might be one of the reasons i enjoyed it so much. as an aroace person, i do enjoy romance in fiction quite a bit, but it's more of a side dish to the main course that is the story and characters individually. having main characters with no show of romantic interest and still being accepted as successful adults is incredibly validating as someone who grew up female. overall, very good video that got me thinking.

I am glad the MLP show didn't put a heavy emphasis on relationships and I bet it was difficult for Lauren Faust to convince the writing team because every other animated show, I always felt like somehow the girls became love interests or are always talking about boys. I loved that MLP shows when they did break the mold, it was interesting to see the relationships happen but I'm glad it wasn't the focus on the rest of the show. When I got to high school, I was career oriented so I focused on studying, got my college degree, I kept learning in my own time. When I watch shows it seems like the girls always got into relationships and it wasn't interesting to me like the main plots. I also enjoyed Totally Spies growing up and I loved seeing the action parts.
Well, Lauren kind of chose the writing "team". I'm sure she didn't have complete say, but the writers are freelance on Friendship is Magic, so you kind of have a high range of different talents you can get. You can also get a lot of inconsistency from writers who haven't written since the beginning, but there's story editors and such to make sure these things don't happen too much.
I haven't seen all of the Equestria Girls stuff, but man I feel bad for Flash. Across the four movies, he has terrible luck with romance. Before the movies begin, he was dating an absolute witch, but at least he broke up with her. Then the guy falls for a new mystery girl. She seems to like him back, and then just vanishes. When she comes back, he's already under the effects of a mind-altering spell and can't make any relationship progress with her. Then, the next time, she's ... not herself? Turns out his own universe's version of the girl he really likes doesn't have the time of day for him at all. And the final nail in the coffin is being reminded to back off "gently" by his ex at summer camp, and then watching not-his-girl go for the _camp counsellor._ I mean, come on! The poor guy! He deserves better.
I know this reply is really, really late... but if you consider all the EqG shorts canon, then it's implied that Flash and Sunset were growing closer again and eventually might have gotten back together.
@@Narrator007 Hey! I did not know that was a plot point. I hope the writers were aiming for more of a friendship, though. When Flash and Sunset were dating, she was a horribly toxic person. We know she has completely turned her life around now, but I'm not sure how healthy it would be for the two of them to get back together. Still, at least there's hope for Flash. Even if he was never going to get back with Sunset, I can't imagine a better wingman than her ... which is funny, given that she's not a pegasus. Get it? No wings? I'll show myself out.
As a woman I personally remember always getting really annoyed at the shows with love in them. Like,a girls only interest is not love and we should (man woman or anything in between) not be conditioned to think love is what makes you a person and that you can’t live happily without it. A LOT of people don’t need love to be happy and all a show is doing by having every character with a love interest is showing kids that if they don’t want a lover they aren’t a person. As you said there are times you can break this rule but you shouldn’t have all characters in a(or wanting) a relationship. One final thing I think we can agree on though is that kids shows should not be showing that the only way to love is by being a stalker,please. P.S:when I say love I mean like romantic and sexual.
I don't think it about what "makes someone a person" it's just that people want to be told they are relevant in some sense to others beyond a vague, platonic presence. Friendship provides that but the problem is friendship is so vague and ranges from the most distant, shallow comradery you can have, to toxic frenemies and even kinship and sincere brotherhood that freindship culturally is this big unlabelled, uncharted zone that you got to run throughi n uncertainty until you finally "score" a romantic- eros relationship. The irony is that people laughed/ mocked homestuck for relabelling a lot of relationships that seem alike to normal stuff - eg: morail to best friend - but it did more to actually chart relationships outside of eros than the entire western culture has done - or at least accetped into main thought- for generations. Until we learn and take in the idea that you can have romantically - in abstract terms - pivotal relationships that involve no sexual or passionate love in it that won't change and people will keep following that mentality because they feel insecure and irrelevant/ unwanted until they finally get a confirmed "Wow. You mean a lot to me so I'm committing to you" and typical lovei s the only thing that signals that loud and clear relationship slot wise.
So you call Appledash an eleventh hour couple(which they are) while also calling Fluttercord a fan ship. When Fluttercord was almost written in the episode(they planed to have Discord give Fluttershy a kiss on the forehead, but took it out 'cause they decided it was to forward), and Appledash was always to be there as it was in the final episode: something to be interpreted with and played with by and for fans. As an Aro/Ace guy who didn’t realize that until recently, I really appreciated the fact that FiM didn’t focus on romance very much. The emphasis on so much other stuff made the romance-focused episodes feel like a part of a character’s normal life, rather than half of their character as a whole. My mother always defends females in media who are not focused on romance, since they’ve been neglected in that regard for a long time. But what Hollywood is giving us are characters like Captain Marvel, who is not a great person, regardless of her gender. (Plus, I’ve heard arguments that they made Cap. Marvel’s character by giving her traditionally male character traits, which actually only empowers men more. Not sure how much of that is true, or if it does do that, but I think there’s at least some validity to it). MLP makes characters who have a gender, instead of building their female characters around that one aspect. It honestly helped me treat women with respect, since other media when I was 10 always seemed to depicted male/female interactions as romantic, even if they really shouldn’t have been. Hooray for learning to be a decent person from children’s media!

Personally if Lauren wanted a couple she could have just used already developed characters like most ships in the fandom was related to one of the main characters not a brand new one. Wich I know they did with rainbow and applejack but personally I think they should have had more episodes.
The concept of romance in the mlp universe is very strange just as the shipping in the mlp fandom is very complicated, For in the actual show relationships between the most unlikely and unexpected characters happened while in the fandom every day some of the most unusual ships are formed some good, some bad, others decent, others only adequate...My point is when it comes to romance and shipping characters from a cartoon it can all be one big complicated and confusing mess. But i have nothing against shipping, Even I have various favorite ships. Im just saying that with how many mlp ships there are it's all become one big mess over the years.
As someone who believes kid shows (or shows in general for that matter) shouldn't center mainly on shipping and romance, I still love shipping and seeing some sub-plots now and then around that. And I think MLP did the "Lovey Dovey stuff" perfectly since you are free to ship things throughout the show but it's not the Mane 6's only purpose to serve. Props to Lauren for avoiding the cliches and breaking out of the overused tropes throughout media when it comes to female characters :).
Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty are such a good couple that Scootaloo's real parents... Actually no, it isn't just the fact Scootaloo's aunts are incredible that they overshadow her parents, her parents are horrible, completely absent, shouldn't have custody, maniacs! Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty are Scootaloo's moms, and I'm happier believing that.
You're projecting a little too much on her parents. They're gone for WORK, and said WORK was too dangerous for her to grow up with. Yes her aunts are better than them but her parents clearly love her and wish they weren't separated all the time. Hence why they wanted her to move away with them.
That's a bit of a stretch. They're clearly shown to love Scootaloo and were only absent in her life because of their jobs. Scootaloo also thinks highly of them in the episode they appear in.
The episode with the aunties confused me so much. I kept going back and forth on wether they were sisters or lesbians. By the end I was more on the side of lesbians but still not sure. It wasn’t until I saw some yt videos that I realized they are DEFINITELY lesbian. Hahaha
a lot of kids have parents who are away due to their career, i think that saying that scootaloos parents shouldn’t have custody and are maniacs is very ignorant. i think those kids who struggle with not seeing their parents as often as others deserve representation

Honestly I think in fanon shipping is easier because of the fact there isn't much romance in the show. The show focusing on indduval characters and their personalites over romance makes it easier for fans to make their own ships
When i was a kid i was overwhelmed by the amount of cartoons centered in girls that showed romantic relationship just for the sake of showing it, the protagonist were always reduced to a girl obssesed with boys or just a boring pretty boy. I think that is one of many reasons i kept liking mlp even as a tween. The characters relationships and goals weren't completly merged and all these themes were treated with much more maturity than, like, a Disney channel show from the time. The main theme of the show was friendship, and child me was very glad that they stick to it. (Sorry for my bad english)
I feel like fluttercord is canon also tho. In the comic as well as in the show. I mean... Fluttershy canonically wanting to marry discord and discord willing to basically destroy the universe for her. And then them ending up together.
yeah, I think they both loved each other romantically but they never redifined their relationship. In the G5 comics, he still called her "his friend" but they also show that Fluttershy was and forever will be the most important pony in his life. He was in shambles over losing her but he said he'll do what he can to protect the Equestria she once protected.
What I find wild is that even with all that said, Friendship is Magic still had more romance than G5 does at this point, even in its early days. G5 doesn't even have a pair of parents.

I always felt like the "no romance rule" was mostly for fhe sake of setting up the show. I didn't think that anyone expected the show to be as big as it is. I feel like Rarity in the Best Night Ever was an excellent way of showing a character who may want romance but not letting it derail the plot.
Good analysis. I will admit, I usually turn off at a show that focuses on lovey dovey stuff. It’s just not my thing. While MLP FIM touched on it here and there, it wasn’t the main focus of the show. Also, side note, did you get copyright claimed for this video? I’m trying to figure out how to avoid copyright claims on my MLP vids. Any pointers?
I think now that FiM is finished airing, Hasbro is more lenient with using footage from the show. I got dinged for copyright a couple times on my podcast episode because of all the song covers, and my video on the Make Your Mark theme got flagged, but other than that it's been pretty smooth sailing. nicely done and yeah I have to admit even as a big romance addict. Romance in kid shows is rarely done properly or is straight up toxic. Looking at you Star vs and MLB. MLB's literal core is it's romance between two teenagers and the actual romance is written so poorly they have to have constant Plot holes/ plot armor to keep the status que going. You can tell the show was written by adults who figured "it's a kid show it's not that impactful" and decided enabling seriously creepy behavior on Marionettes end was appropriate. Star is just as toxic but for a slightly different reason. Honestly I feel like it would of been better if A. The ball episode's bs never happened. B. Star decided to stay single or C. literally just anything other then marco. The show literally forced that relationship while simultaneously saying it's forced and it was AWKWARD as all hell. They felt better as friends, Most fans agree tom and marco had more romantic chemistry then star and marco ever did. Mlp on the other hand never really forced romance down our throats and endorsed stalker like behavior. though spikes crush on rarity was always iffy and probably shouldn't of been in the show considering the pro-shippers that ship a literal baby dragon and a grown pony together and don't think that's sketchy as all hell. The show handled a lot of tough social issues, hell some of them we're handled 100% perfect, but compared to SVTFOE and MLB? I'd pick mlp any day in terms of writing over those two.
I totally agree with you. My favorite ships are usually ones that aren't so forced or the center of the show's plots/the characters within those ships be weird stalkers or toxic people. A couple of shows directed toward a younger audience can still have the shipping work without it feeling forced or have it be dull/toxic but a lot of them fail at it. One that I feel does a good job avoiding the stalker/forced ship track is the show called "Unikitty" which has two main ships but not as a center of the plot or has them be creepy as heck. I know not a lot of people know about it but it reminds me a bit of MLP.

I think the shipping community ironically got more to work with because so few relationships existed already. Lol My opinion, the show handled relationships almost perfectly. The almost is only because I think they belittled the CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD, a little bit when they had him totally oblivious that his FIANCE had been kidnapped and replaced with someone who acts completely different.
There are actual reasons of why this rule exists for the mane six in the first place. Firstly to not label women as always "meant to be romantically involved" only because they are women, secondly to not displease those who are into different "headcanons"/"OTP" or have elected one character as their "waifu" or "husbando", with tangential and totally unnecessary storywise elements that hints to romantic implications. Third, because the show is about friendship, and if you teach about friendship and then you put aside it for the romance, you are defeating the original porpouse. That is why i believe the show did mostly pretty well for it's whole run, except the last episode that was not "breaking rules" for good, but was a total screw up. Also IMHO saying that a rule is meant to be broken is a non sequitur. If a rule is meant to carry a principle that must be respected, there are no situations in which the principle does not apply. You can work around that sometimes, but in the end the rule must be respected in its core, not just treated as a vague guidelines or the principle it carries become vague in itself. So, no, the main cast was not meant to end in romanticism and the show should not be ended with a time skip of nearly 20 years. They should have choosen to show the coronation of Twilight as it happened, instead as a flashback. The story was already close, the character already achieved their goals, every other information after had just removed the freedom for the fans to speculate and fantasize. A rule can be broken, but not the principles it carries in its core.

The series ending with AJ and RD is the same problem that Roosterteeth did with RWBY: "The creators bend to fandom's shipping." AJ&RD really DOESN'T make sense (EQG's Rarity and AJ special made more sense). At the very least final episode makes it so vague that you can just pretend it's NOT a thing, which is for the best because it goes against the power dynamic of Mane 6, and shipping 2 friends destroys it.
Yeah, my whole problem with AppleDash in canon is that the end of the show worked towards the opposite if it worked at it at all. "Non-Compete Clause" sticks in my head whenever I think about that whole situation.
this is such a great video to watch. MLP is definetly an example of a show when writing female characters and couples. But gotta say, although i would like if we could consider every decision that makes the final product as exclusively artistic, sadly with everything in the media industry theres marketing decisions. Cadence is my favourite princess out of all 3 (twlight will never be a princess to me) and yet she was made mostly to profit off the royal marriage craze. Equestria girls is my favourite spin off to any media EVER MADE, and yet i hate flash with a passion, he clearly exists only so that girls have a "ken doll" to play with along with their sunsets and twilights and was so terribly implemented in the movie he feels like a plot hole.
I love my little ponies gen 4, I hated the lovey dovey stuff too so it’s why I loved the movie, still liked some but it’s not overly doing it. But I hated the typical girls show I thank the creator for fixing the stereotypical females in every show.
I dont know if this even counts as "romance" but in my opinion Gravity Falls handled the "kid has a crush on older girl" trope *WAY* better then FiM did like its not even funny.
I wish that the characters of my little could of had the animation style from "My little pony friendship is magic the movie" inn the newer my little show/ movie.
I find it hilarious that there are creators out there believe that chic's just talk about boys. I mean, holy crap, I think they've been living under a rock. Aand that view seems more of a in their mind fantasy, cause it sure ain't reality lol. I think that's why as an adult, the show is relatable, and as a fellow story creator, I have respect for her vision that's been created so young girls can relate to female characters.
Honestly the fact that the Lovey Dovey rule was broken in Equestria Girls is one of the many many reasons I don't like that show-that and because I think that you shouldn't do any unnecessary transformations with characters.
Idk why people assume all young girls wanna hear about is boy problems, I grew up afab and was interested in so so many other things that aren’t “conventional”. At the time, I adored shows like mlp, atla, winx club and more. And a common thing that I disliked was when they focused on romance instead of the so much more interesting characters and world around them. Granted there’s some exceptions in all those shows like you said but I still had issues and got tired of romance subplots even as like a little little kid. Dumbing down shows to “boy shows” that have action and fighting and “girl shows” that have makeovers and boy problems is honestly insulting to how much variety there is not only in boys and girls but just in little kids in general.

The actually had a lot of couples. The show was quite based. Remember Sunny Skies and Petunia Petals from Rainbow Roadtrip? It aired during Pride Month but featured a straight couple. That's pretty meme worthy.

I think there needs to be more emphasis on the story and world building, and romantic relationships must always take a backseat. After all, you can invest viewers for leaps and bounds longer time with interesting lore and story, but putting huge focus on two characters being in love and getting it on will lose people pretty quickly.
At least the writing wasn't bad enough to make everyone hate it to the degree of some shows I know. *Cough cough GOT cough cough* It was only minorly irritating at times, but didn't spoil the magic of the show itself. It was more it went from campy and funny to more melancholy and at times bland.
the animators and writers definitely knew what they were doing for bon bon and lyra in rainbow rocks and that background scene where one of them proposes with a ring to the other

It's not even cartoons that had this problem. It's in nonanimated shows like the arrow verse shows as well.
Ironically I seemed to like the idea of a few ships before they made the ships official. I used to love the felicity character but then she and Oliver both became so annoying when they did get together, because the writers seem to think that the only interesting couples are the ones full of drama.

One thing I've always felt is that in a show about characters with _very_ strong personalities, it's improbable that they would develop a romantic relationship with anybody that isn't specifically tailored to be their love interest. Rainbow and AJ is the perfect example. The characters we see before The Last Problem would NEVER date each other. They're both way too headstrong, career focused and do not compliment each other even a little. Trying to develop that relationship in the middle of the show would either A: Feel forced and unnatural, or B: Take too long for watchers to remain invested. BUT, have them be developed off-screen into different characters, suddenly putting them together is fine.
Also, one thing that seperates MLP from a lot of other kids' shows is that the main characters are _adults_ . They're going to have a wider perspective of their lives and what they desire, and they're not cauldrons of hormones.
not something i ever thought about much while watching the show throughout my life, but this might be one of the reasons i enjoyed it so much. as an aroace person, i do enjoy romance in fiction quite a bit, but it's more of a side dish to the main course that is the story and characters individually. having main characters with no show of romantic interest and still being accepted as successful adults is incredibly validating as someone who grew up female.

I am glad the MLP show didn't put a heavy emphasis on relationships and I bet it was difficult for Lauren Faust to convince the writing team because every other animated show, I always felt like somehow the girls became love interests or are always talking about boys. I loved that MLP shows when they did break the mold, it was interesting to see the relationships happen but I'm glad it wasn't the focus on the rest of the show. When I got to high school, I was career oriented so I focused on studying, got my college degree, I kept learning in my own time. When I watch shows it seems like the girls always got into relationships and it wasn't interesting to me like the main plots. I also enjoyed Totally Spies growing up and I loved seeing the action parts.
Well, Lauren kind of chose the writing "team". I'm sure she didn't have complete say, but the writers are freelance on Friendship is Magic, so you kind of have a high range of different talents you can get. You can also get a lot of inconsistency from writers who haven't written since the beginning, but there's story editors and such to make sure these things don't happen too much.
I haven't seen all of the Equestria Girls stuff, but man I feel bad for Flash. Across the four movies, he has terrible luck with romance. Before the movies begin, he was dating an absolute witch, but at least he broke up with her. Then the guy falls for a new mystery girl. She seems to like him back, and then just vanishes. When she comes back, he's already under the effects of a mind-altering spell and can't make any relationship progress with her. Then, the next time, she's ... not herself? Turns out his own universe's version of the girl he really likes doesn't have the time of day for him at all. And the final nail in the coffin is being reminded to back off "gently" by his ex at summer camp, and then watching not-his-girl go for the _camp counsellor._ I mean, come on! The poor guy! He deserves better.
I know this reply is really, really late... but if you consider all the EqG shorts canon, then it's implied that Flash and Sunset were growing closer again and eventually might have gotten back together.
@@Narrator007 Hey! I did not know that was a plot point. I hope the writers were aiming for more of a friendship, though. When Flash and Sunset were dating, she was a horribly toxic person. We know she has completely turned her life around now, but I'm not sure how healthy it would be for the two of them to get back together.
Still, at least there's hope for Flash. Even if he was never going to get back with Sunset, I can't imagine a better wingman than her ... which is funny, given that she's not a pegasus.

As a woman I personally remember always getting really annoyed at the shows with love in them. Like,a girls only interest is not love and we should (man woman or anything in between) not be conditioned to think love is what makes you a person and that you can’t live happily without it. A LOT of people don’t need love to be happy and all a show is doing by having every character with a love interest is showing kids that if they don’t want a lover they aren’t a person. As you said there are times you can break this rule but you shouldn’t have all characters in a(or wanting) a relationship. One final thing I think we can agree on though is that kids shows should not be showing that the only way to love is by being a stalker,please.
P.S:when I say love I mean like romantic and sexual.
I don't think it about what "makes someone a person" it's just that people want to be told they are relevant in some sense to others beyond a vague, platonic presence. Friendship provides that but the problem is friendship is so vague and ranges from the most distant, shallow comradery you can have, to toxic frenemies and even kinship and sincere brotherhood that freindship culturally is this big unlabelled, uncharted zone that you got to run throughi n uncertainty until you finally "score" a romantic- eros relationship.
The irony is that people laughed/ mocked homestuck for relabelling a lot of relationships that seem alike to normal stuff - eg: morail to best friend - but it did more to actually chart relationships outside of eros than the entire western culture has done - or at least accetped into main thought- for generations. Until we learn and take in the idea that you can have romantically - in abstract terms - pivotal relationships that involve no sexual or passionate love in it that won't change and people will keep following that mentality because they feel insecure and irrelevant/ unwanted until they finally get a confirmed "Wow. You mean a lot to me so I'm committing to you" and typical lovei s the only thing that signals that loud and clear relationship slot wise.
So you call Appledash an eleventh hour couple(which they are) while also calling Fluttercord a fan ship. When Fluttercord was almost written in the episode(they planed to have Discord give Fluttershy a kiss on the forehead, but took it out 'cause they decided it was to forward), and Appledash was always to be there as it was in the final episode: something to be interpreted with and played with by and for fans. (Correct me if I'm wrong on any details.)

As an Aro/Ace guy who didn’t realize that until recently, I really appreciated the fact that FiM didn’t focus on romance very much. The emphasis on so much other stuff made the romance-focused episodes feel like a part of a character’s normal life, rather than half of their character as a whole.
My mother always defends females in media who are not focused on romance, since they’ve been neglected in that regard for a long time. But what Hollywood is giving us are characters like Captain Marvel, who is not a great person, regardless of her gender. (Plus, I’ve heard arguments that they made Cap. Marvel’s character by giving her traditionally male character traits, which actually only empowers men more. Not sure how much of that is true, or if it does do that, but I think there’s at least some validity to it).
MLP makes characters who have a gender, instead of building their female characters around that one aspect. It honestly helped me treat women with respect, since other media when I was 10 always seemed to depicted male/female interactions as romantic, even if they really shouldn’t have been. Hooray for learning to be a decent person from children’s media!

The concept of romance in the mlp universe is very strange just as the shipping in the mlp fandom is very complicated, For in the actual show relationships between the most unlikely and unexpected characters happened while in the fandom every day some of the most unusual ships are formed some good, some bad, others decent, others only adequate...My point is when it comes to romance and shipping characters from a cartoon it can all be one big complicated and confusing mess.
But i have nothing against shipping, Even I have various favorite ships. Im just saying that with how many mlp ships there are it's all become one big mess over the years.
As someone who believes kid shows (or shows in general for that matter) shouldn't center mainly on shipping and romance, I still love shipping and seeing some sub-plots now and then around that. And I think MLP did the "Lovey Dovey stuff" perfectly since you are free to ship things throughout the show but it's not the Mane 6's only purpose to serve. Props to Lauren for avoiding the cliches and breaking out of the overused tropes throughout media when it comes to female characters :).

You're projecting a little too much on her parents. They're gone for WORK, and said WORK was too dangerous for her to grow up with. Yes her aunts are better than them but her parents clearly love her and wish they weren't separated all the time. Hence why they wanted her to move away with them.
That's a bit of a stretch. They're clearly shown to love Scootaloo and were only absent in her life because of their jobs. Scootaloo also thinks highly of them in the episode they appear in.
The episode with the aunties confused me so much. I kept going back and forth on wether they were sisters or lesbians. By the end I was more on the side of lesbians but still not sure. It wasn’t until I saw some yt videos that I realized they are DEFINITELY lesbian. Hahaha

When i was a kid i was overwhelmed by the amount of cartoons centered in girls that showed romantic relationship just for the sake of showing it, the protagonist were always reduced to a girl obssesed with boys or just a boring pretty boy. I think that is one of many reasons i kept liking mlp even as a tween. The characters relationships and goals weren't completly merged and all these themes were treated with much more maturity than, like, a Disney channel show from the time.
The main theme of the show was friendship, and child me was very glad that they stick to it.

I always felt like the "no romance rule" was mostly for fhe sake of setting up the show. I didn't think that anyone expected the show to be as big as it is. I feel like Rarity in the Best Night Ever was an excellent way of showing a character who may want romance but not letting it derail the plot.

I think now that FiM is finished airing, Hasbro is more lenient with using footage from the show. I got dinged for copyright a couple times on my podcast episode because of all the song covers, and my video on the Make Your Mark theme got flagged, but other than that it's been pretty smooth sailing. nicely done and yeah I have to admit even as a big romance addict. Romance in kid shows is rarely done properly or is straight up toxic. Looking at you Star vs and MLB.
MLB's literal core is it's romance between two teenagers and the actual romance is written so poorly they have to have constant Plot holes/ plot armor to keep the status que going.
You can tell the show was written by adults who figured "it's a kid show it's not that impactful" and decided enabling seriously creepy behavior on Marionettes end was appropriate.
Star is just as toxic but for a slightly different reason. Honestly I feel like it would of been better if A. The ball episode's bs never happened. B. Star decided to stay single or C. literally just anything other then marco. The show literally forced that relationship while simultaneously saying it's forced and it was AWKWARD as all hell. They felt better as friends, Most fans agree tom and marco had more romantic chemistry then star and marco ever did.
Mlp on the other hand never really forced romance down our throats and endorsed stalker like behavior. though spikes crush on rarity was always iffy and probably shouldn't of been in the show considering the pro-shippers that ship a literal baby dragon and a grown pony together and don't think that's sketchy as all hell. The show handled a lot of tough social issues, hell some of them we're handled 100% perfect, but compared to SVTFOE and MLB? I'd pick mlp any day in terms of writing over those two.
I totally agree with you. My favorite ships are usually ones that aren't so forced or the center of the show's plots/the characters within those ships be weird stalkers or toxic people. A couple of shows directed toward a younger audience can still have the shipping work without it feeling forced or have it be dull/toxic but a lot of them fail at it.
One that I feel does a good job avoiding the stalker/forced ship track is the show called "Unikitty" which has two main ships but not as a center of the plot or has them be creepy as heck. I know not a lot of people know about it but it reminds me a bit of MLP.
Feels like Fluttershy and Discord were the only fleshed out characters and out of all the ships they didn't even confirm them as canon XD

My opinion, the show handled relationships almost perfectly. The almost is only because I think they belittled the CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD, a little bit when they had him totally oblivious that his FIANCE had been kidnapped and replaced with someone who acts completely different.
A lot of these couples are just fanfiction tho lol
There are actual reasons of why this rule exists for the mane six in the first place. Firstly to not label women as always "meant to be romantically involved" only because they are women, secondly to not displease those who are into different "headcanons"/"OTP" or have elected one character as their "waifu" or "husbando", with tangential and totally unnecessary storywise elements that hints to romantic implications. Third, because the show is about friendship, and if you teach about friendship and then you put aside it for the romance, you are defeating the original porpouse. That is why i believe the show did mostly pretty well for it's whole run, except the last episode that was not "breaking rules" for good, but was a total screw up. Also IMHO saying that a rule is meant to be broken is a non sequitur. If a rule is meant to carry a principle that must be respected, there are no situations in which the principle does not apply. You can work around that sometimes, but in the end the rule must be respected in its core, not just treated as a vague guidelines or the principle it carries become vague in itself. So, no, the main cast was not meant to end in romanticism and the show should not be ended with a time skip of nearly 20 years. They should have choosen to show the coronation of Twilight as it happened, instead as a flashback. The story was already close, the character already achieved their goals, every other information after had just removed the freedom for the fans to speculate and fantasize. A rule can be broken, but not the principles it carries in its core.
Yeah, most of the finale sucked. But because it's only one episode, it's at least very easy to ignore.

The series ending with AJ and RD is the same problem that Roosterteeth did with RWBY: "The creators bend to fandom's shipping."
AJ&RD really DOESN'T make sense (EQG's Rarity and AJ special made more sense). At the very least final episode makes it so vague that you can just pretend it's NOT a thing, which is for the best because it goes against the power dynamic of Mane 6, and shipping 2 friends destroys it.
Yeah, my whole problem with AppleDash in canon is that the end of the show worked towards the opposite if it worked at it at all.
"Non-Compete Clause" sticks in my head whenever I think about that whole situation.
this is such a great video to watch. MLP is definetly an example of a show when writing female characters and couples. But gotta say, although i would like if we could consider every decision that makes the final product as exclusively artistic, sadly with everything in the media industry theres marketing decisions. Cadence is my favourite princess out of all 3 (twlight will never be a princess to me) and yet she was made mostly to profit off the royal marriage craze. Equestria girls is my favourite spin off to any media EVER MADE, and yet i hate flash with a passion, he clearly exists only so that girls have a "ken doll" to play with along with their sunsets and twilights and was so terribly implemented in the movie he feels like a plot hole.

Idk why people assume all young girls wanna hear about is boy problems, I grew up afab and was interested in so so many other things that aren’t “conventional”. At the time, I adored shows like mlp, atla, winx club and more. And a common thing that I disliked was when they focused on romance instead of the so much more interesting characters and world around them. Granted there’s some exceptions in all those shows like you said but I still had issues and got tired of romance subplots even as like a little little kid. Dumbing down shows to “boy shows” that have action and fighting and “girl shows” that have makeovers and boy problems is honestly insulting to how much variety there is not only in boys and girls but just in little kids in general.

I think there needs to be more emphasis on the story and world building, and romantic relationships must always take a backseat. After all, you can invest viewers for leaps and bounds longer time with interesting lore and story, but putting huge focus on two characters being in love and getting it on will lose people pretty quickly.
Good news was that the shipping and romance didn’t bring down the show. It was the bad writing that started showing its face in the later seasons.
At least the writing wasn't bad enough to make everyone hate it to the degree of some shows I know. *Cough cough GOT cough cough* It was only minorly irritating at times, but didn't spoil the magic of the show itself. It was more it went from campy and funny to more melancholy and at times bland.
