He looks like a happy, joyous child playing that piano... What a wonder of musical genius... Just f****** mind-blowing. And how psychosis, mania, can creep into the unguarded cracks of a fragile mind - yet a steel-strong mind as well. And acute alcoholism - the damage that can cause. Bless his soul.
If this was from 1985, that's two years before Jaco passed. Considering the struggles Jaco was dealing with at that time this is an amazing performance.
Envie de rire ou de pleurer ...Comment définir cette sensation de joie et de tristesse quand tu connais l'issue de la vie de ce musicien d'exception...Ça musique est éternelle ...RIP-Jaco...
You can't possibly have listened to any of Jaco's bass solos. Listen to his solos on "Port Of Entry", "Donna Lee", "(Used To Be A) Cha-Cha", "Havona" and "Punk Jazz" and you'll change your mind about his bass-playing!
I get the same reaction - the music is truly beautiful, and he seems genuinely happy playing. And to know that his life was lost in a meaningless way too....
@dudesons441 for real, idk about his bi polar dis oder but in all these videos he's plays so beautifully, and he's a genius, only a genius could play like this!
monsterjazzlicks Joe put out a great record of music for full orchestra; a great version of "Unknown Soldier". So Joe comes from the land of great composers- Mozart etc
I dont remember who it was who said it (Maybe Gerald Veasley, Vic Bailey or Marcus Miller...someone of that vain anyway) but they referred to Jaco saying, "My brother said "Yeah you can play his licks but could you come up with them in the first place?" For me, its a no brainer. Jaco is a legend in that respect. Yes there are technically better players but the guys natural ability was something else. in the 80's he had a MIDI set up sussed out and playing within 20mins of ever seeing it!!!
It was Muz Skillings................bassist of Living Color.........his brother had a Jaco record and raved about Jaco and Muz said ..........."I can play that stuff"............and his brother yeah but can you come up with this stuff like this?...........and that's when Muz got realized just how great Jaco was and how far off he was in that assessment of him..........
@ShareTheSphere Hey man, I actually enjoy coming to this video cause I actually like the song and performance. Only difference is I am not beholden to the lie that Jaco is the greatest bass player in the world.
Their is no best (insert musician here), because every musician is different and brilliant in their own way and every one has a preference to what musician they like. No musician is the "best" because there is no "best" type of instrument or music.
thank you posting this vid! I can't find the "late night talk with you" with hiram and jaco in live in nycity vol 4 on utube ? are they make it deasapered ?
I would actually love a dramatized Jaco story to see WR in the limelight again. Studios would never do it because the teenyboppers won’t get it. It has to be an independent movie. One of the GOOD independent movies...
Yes I can see the resemblance, but Brendan Fraser is a little too old now and it would just for the final years of his life. Jaco changed so much from that lean long-haired stunning looking young bass player. I don't know of any actor who could play him as a young man.
@1980Triumph What you call jazz I might call fusion as Weather Report more or less invented that term. Playing fretless was a Jaco invention , at least he was the first to get noticed doing that. If you had your ears correctly plugged in you would notice that Jaco never misses a note and it´s never false ,on the fretless. And was very technical On the piano he made fantastic chord/bass compositions but lacked a lot of tecnicality. I´ve played/ composed for 35 years.. how about you?
ShareTheSphere Please don’t blame the sublime Weather Report for having anything to do with ‘fusion’. Fusion is what people with loads of chops and zero ideas play. Weather Report was overflowing with fantastic musical inspiration and talent that went beyond genre.
Romain Labaye I have DARK MAGUS by Miles, and did not realize he Azar was on this. I though it was Dave Leibman. But in Wiki, it does not state that Azar recorded with Jaco?
Clearly wasn't all there by this point. He knew enough to be able to play well, just didn't go to that full potential by that point any longer and just wasn't as tight as he once was on many fronts. He needed help. Desperately. Glad I figured it out and got help (drank too much). I found it exacerbated my mental trouble significantly as a musician too. You really do think you sound great but uh....no man um...things are distorted and you really can't recognize that until you get that help.
yeah.. it's that ole Yamaha DX sound.. didn't help that it was on some damn Pipe Organ setting.. sounds like the Pitch wheel is engaged, too... these synths now sound terribly dated- but at the time it was state-of-the-art!! go figger. It was much better when he was on piano.. he seems a little out there; possibly high; but at least he was havin' fun.
HOMBREX.. do ya know what year this is from?? Phew.. pretty out there... still.. he did a good job on piano.. shame he had to play the synth, which sounded like the Mod wheel was out of whack... or SUMthing. Still, pretty interesting..
@1980Triumph If you compose music and gain some knowledge you do not automatically become a snob. And then as of any knowledge there is a better chance that you know what you are talking about . And you my friend are clueless , and there is no point debating this with you. My admiration for JP is solid and no punk without a clue can take that away. For me Jaco was very true to music ,absolutely one of the greatest. You will never understand what is great or not..
@1980Triumph Apparently you still haven't listened to the Jaco-tunes I recommended. But I guess you'll still ignore it, since you seem to cherish commenting "Jaco sucks" under dozens of his videos. And for the last time, Jaco was held in high regard at the very instant he became internationally famous( around the time of his debut-album). Your behaviour is starting to annoy me, because writing these comments seems to be your primary habit on youtube. You have made your point clear long ago.
@ShareTheSphere No, I am actually more based in reality than most jazz snobs who liked to pretend Jaco was good on bass. Any of the live clips on youtube will prove that. This is by far his best performance.
I know this is from 10 years ago, but what the hell are you talking about my friend? Jaco might not be the best bass player of all time but you’re really telling me that this performance is better than teen town? Portrait of Tracy? Opus pocus? DONNA LEE?
Jaco was seriously mentally ill during this period of his life. You can see him struggling with demons just from his actions and the crazed look on his face. This was during a manic phase of the disease.
@ShareTheSphere I don't know what he practiced more, I just like this song and performance...also he was not the best bass player in the world. Even outside of jazz in soul music there were better bass players...Louis Johnson, James Jamerson, Nathan East
it is shown jazz snobs are worse than rock and rb fans. if you say anything other than jaco is the greatest, they hound you and give your comment negatives. Jaco's bass playing wasn't that good but this piano playing is, point blank
monsterjazzlicks Seriously? he was a mad man in this video. Should called out the men in white coats with straightjackets before he hurt himself! Whaco Jaco!!
Im trippin off the fact of how comfortable this cat looks on piano! He can actually play!!! Explains why his songs were so well composed.
And considering he doesn't play piano professionaly
All of life is in Jaco's playing. The best of what we are. The melancholy of existence. A window into the universe.
YES!
Playing the sustain pedal like a bass drum :)
What a beautiful man he was. Such a tragic, heartbreaking story. He was so talented !!!! A musical genius.
Envie de rire ou de pleurer ...Comment définir cette sensation de joie et de tristesse quand tu connais l'issue de la vie de ce musicien d'exception...Ça musique est éternelle ...RIP-Jaco...
The joy on his face in this is wonderful to witness.
No pianist has ever came close to this drive feel yet. Listened to other piano solo performances of this piece - incomparable.
You can't possibly have listened to any of Jaco's bass solos. Listen to his solos on "Port Of Entry", "Donna Lee", "(Used To Be A) Cha-Cha", "Havona" and "Punk Jazz" and you'll change your mind about his bass-playing!
What a freak genius Jaco was!!!
what a great composer he was. I can listen to this rendition of Liberty City 24/7. Very funky, off the cuff on the night and just awesome!!
He was a master at everything he got his hands on.
Great to hear Jaco on the DX7! Superb posting!
Looks to me here like he could teach Zawinul! somethings..this is totally unbelievable man thanks for the post
We will always love you, Jaco.
And I will always love your manifestos of surrealism, Breton.
@@sverigetv1 I'm way past that. Transformers fan-fiction is where it's at mon ami
I remember seeing Weather Report in Toronto at UofT Convocation Hall and Jaco played the pipe organ (it was on stage behind the band) for a bit.
I love Jaco's attitude in this video, this is what music is about, So enjoyable.. :)
Its sad that till today musicians are labeled as "eccentric geniuses" as if its a universal truth. His music prevails!
Genius/madness. A delicate balance between the two.
I love him!!!!!
Jaco is the MAN!
First time u heard that tune was with Bob Mintzer....Jaco forever...:))
I struggle to watch two musician geniuses perform their brilliance because of what we've lost.....................Jaco and Karen Carpenter......
he is still th greatest bass or piano or anythng he is the FUCKING KINGGGGGGGGGGG
So good to see Jaco so handsome before his face and image's been deteriorated. Drug's are not bad. Excess of anything is.
That left hand bassline loop goes hard.
GOD. Everytime I watch this video, it makes me really sad... WHY!!!!!!
Because knowing someone as pure and innocent as him dying and living his last years out like he did is fucking soul shattering. God bless you jaco
I get the same reaction - the music is truly beautiful, and he seems genuinely happy playing. And to know that his life was lost in a meaningless way too....
we owe it all to you
This is so much fun to watch, thanks for posting.
his a really a complete musician i want to find some videos of him on drums
I wish that my DX7 sounded as cool and hip as this ;-)
simply fantastic talent!
crazy awesome
You can tell that he studied Nicolas Slonimsky's "Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns" book, here.
he is the ONE!!
@dudesons441 for real, idk about his bi polar dis oder but in all these videos he's plays so beautifully, and he's a genius, only a genius could play like this!
jaco the mad scientist!
THANK YOU !!!
....madness taking it's toll...
Who Loves Ya, Jaco?
@dudesons441 One can only imagine..................it was mind blowing already.
the bass monstre is good on piano too!
A Genius....
Stravinsky; Rite of Spring; Jaco!
brianderek Jaco, Wayne and Joe all LOVED Igor. Joe studied his scores!
monsterjazzlicks Same here! Had to conduct part of that score for conducting class @ Berklee. Love the bi-tonal approach!
brianderek I think JZ learnt much from these scores, in that he was able to ORCHESTRATE all of the Weather Report tunes on his synths.
I would LOVE to see this broadcast in it's entirety if it exists anywhere please?!
monsterjazzlicks Joe put out a great record of music for full orchestra; a great version of "Unknown Soldier". So Joe comes from the land of great composers- Mozart etc
Genius
il migliore

Jaco bears a striking resemblance to the pianist in the flick Reefer Madness
i want the picture of his face on 1:15 and 1:23 on a shirt NOW!!!! lol so happy in his music.
@ShareTheSphere
Funny because I was thinking the same thing about you and most jazz snobs
@ShareTheSphere
Hey man, I actually enjoy coming to this video cause I actually like the song and performance. Only difference is I am not beholden to the lie that Jaco is the greatest bass player in the world.

This is really sad you noticed it ended abruptly and they dubbed in applause. The audience actually started booing and Jaco stormed off the stage
thank you posting this vid!
I can't find the "late night talk with you" with hiram and jaco in live in nycity vol 4 on utube ? are they make it deasapered ?
If they make a biopic of his life, Brendan Fraser is the obvious choice to play Jaco.
Fraser is too old now, I think. You're right though...he would've been the perfect choice. Like Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash.
Joaquin Phoenix... i could see him diggin’ jaco
It has to be Felix his son, lols like and can play like a mofuka
I would actually love a dramatized Jaco story to see WR in the limelight again. Studios would never do it because the teenyboppers won’t get it. It has to be an independent movie. One of the GOOD independent movies...

Haha deadly i didnt know jaco could play keys aswell
genius
he has so much soul on the piano.
the organ is just a toy.
@kamykazzzz the problem is that with most drugs, any of it is excess, like heroin or cocaine.
Journey-Man (~_~) Nuff Love and Peace
he looks totally fucking mad! i love it!!!!
oh fuck, my hair is almost like jacos
@davieIII whats a grinder?
@1980Triumph

pastorius muito louco no piano! rsss
Who is the Tenor Sax player watching in the wings please?!
monsterjazzlicks Azar Lawrence
Romain Labaye Thanks. But I have never heard of him before? Does he play in this recording somewhere might you know please?
+monsterjazzlicks check him out on Wikipedia ! There are plenty of informations that seem to be right ! ;)
Romain Labaye Is he playing on any of the SONGS in this Jaco video?
Romain Labaye
I have DARK MAGUS by Miles, and did not realize he Azar was on this. I though it was Dave Leibman. But in Wiki, it does not state that Azar recorded with Jaco?

Look at his fucking left hand go ... a real piano man move over Elton !
putain, ca groove merde!...vraiment !
I believe this is 1985...
did jaco have ECT??
HOMBREX.. do ya know what year this is from?? Phew.. pretty out there...
still.. he did a good job on piano.. shame he had to play the synth, which sounded
like the Mod wheel was out of whack... or SUMthing. Still, pretty interesting..
shocking! does anyone know what year this was?
haha cool
jaco pwns
He is exhibiting a manic episode here. Very clearly self medicated too. His eyes are completely unfocused.
@1980Triumph

@1980Triumph -i play the bass and piano...he was a baseplayer foremost.
You seem clueless
@1980Triumph
Apparently you still haven't listened to the Jaco-tunes I recommended. But I guess you'll still ignore it, since you seem to cherish commenting "Jaco sucks" under dozens of his videos. @1980Triumph You no clue.
efeitos do crack
does anyone else think he looks a bit like brendon fraizer?
Really ? ...care to explain exactly how you can see that from this clip .
woops i mean 1:32
@ShareTheSphere
No, I am actually more based in reality than most jazz snobs who liked to pretend Jaco was good on bass. Any of the live clips on youtube will prove that. This is by far his best performance.
I know this is from 10 years ago, but what the hell are you talking about my friend? Jaco might not be the best bass player of all time but you’re really telling me that this performance is better than teen town? Portrait of Tracy? Opus pocus? DONNA LEE?
sound way killer
is that the real jaco?
@kamykazzzz You know what's bad? That unnecessary apostrophe!
I would prefer 2:01
byrdland
Jaco was seriously mentally ill during this period of his life. You can see him struggling with demons just from his actions and the crazed look on his face. This was during a manic phase of the disease.
i would prefer 1:41 xD
@ShareTheSphere
I don't know what he practiced more, I just like this song and performance...also he was not the best bass player in the world. Even outside of jazz in soul music there were better bass players...Louis Johnson, James Jamerson, Nathan East

jaco looks like jim carrey,lol
what
Jaco was so whacked out when this video was made. He looks like a crazed lunatic...and sadly, he was.
David Lis It's a shame when people focus on the negative aspects of a person. Jaco's talent shines through beautifully and unblemished here.
monsterjazzlicks Seriously? he was a mad man in this video. Should called out the men in white coats with straightjackets before he hurt himself! Whaco Jaco!!
David Lis Obviously you fail to have any compassion or understanding for those unfortunate to be suffering from mental-health issues.
Lol ur an ass
@1980Triumph pick another forum where you know what the f. you are talking about.
goodbye
sooooo........white people CAN SWING! HAH just jokin around, but no this guy is the real deal.
