    He doesn't only play bass, he plays over space, time and emotion. With all their far away technical skills, modern jazz harmony usage. I don't know many bassist that can provide this intensity.

    I stumbled upon this video today and my head was spinning after.The maestro himself threw every conceivable bass technique in this composition from a higher plain and thank Christ no slapping.Double stops,octaves,natural harmonics,false harmonics and pinch harmonics all with perfect intonation on a fretless bass while walking around amongst the audience.Music fans only had Jaco for a brief moment in history but he gave us more in that short period to last a lifetime of pleasure and inspiration.

    • @ivanhoe8591

      Brief but timeless. Nonetheless, so very many 'if onlys'... like if only he'd lived to compose for full orchestra!

      I agree, but I'm wondering why its seems like you're against slapping?

    I saw him live in '81 and '84, amazing shows. This has to be the best live Jaco recording I've ever seen. Continuum is without a doubt the best bass song ever conceived. Just a beautiful song, and so nice that it comes from one bass.

    Jaco is the greatest bassist of all time. I mean, COME ON...LISTEN TO HIM! He's also walking around the audience while playing! Nobody does that! He's the rebel revolutionary of creative playing. One for the ages.

    Thank you Garry Trudeau for the link here from Doonesbury today. The Berlin Jazz Festival site archive lists this performance as a SOLO by Jaco, on November 2, 1979. This was recorded months after Jaco's performance on Joni Mitchell's album Mingus. I can recognize many musical references here to his work on "God Must Be a Boogie Man."

    Being a bit of a necromancer, but he’s not right here. It’s a mash up of a whole pile of his stuff, and he’s off his head. It’s a real shame that people see this stuff and call it his best. It’s not. And I am a Jaco fan. This is really horrible.

    • @escon
      @escon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffwolinski2659 Jeff, he is clearly not with it. The music is disjointed and incoherent. It’s pieces of Continuum with random inserts of string slapping, and bits of vocals from Word of Mouth (John and Mary) interspersed with other random doodling where ever his head was taking him. It’s sad, the last gasp of one of the greatest musicians to visit the planet. That’s why it is horrible.

    • @jeffwolinski2659
      @jeffwolinski2659 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So he's quoting from various lines that he's played before, I bet most people in the audience enjoyed that. His decline was tragic and his untimely end even more so. That doesn't make this a horrible performance. To each his own. I'll treasure every Jaco video I can find, even when he isn't his best he is still Jaco and that is great.
