I'm so glad this footage is shown on youtube (to the world). I've seen it many times on Belgian Television. For me it's one of the most intense moments in Jazz ever because it also shows the deep frienship between those two ......cheers !
Some funny and true Jaco stories-being raised here in S. Fl, Jaco was practically a household name among musicians in the '70's & '80's...he would occasionally make it up to West Palm Beach from N. Miami (Liberty City)-back in the early '70's, he got his first big break playing with Wayne Cochran & The CC Riders-a loud, funky big band led by Cochran (aka the White James Brown-Jon Faddis auditioned for them btw-another story), anyway, the "Riders" road uniforms consisted of tuxedo's. When Jaco joined, he emphatically refused to wear a tux on stage and was the only member of the band wearing a tee shirt, jeans and sneakers-he could get away with it b/c... he was Jaco! Back then, he would introduce himself and say "Hey! I'm Jaco...the world's greatest bass player!" Towards his sad end, he gave a masterclass at FAU in Boca Raton. Everybody was seated and waiting for Jaco. After a while, from outside, you could hear CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! And in walks Jaco lugging his bass behind him, with no case, apparently, he was dragging his bass behind him walking up the stairs. He plugs in his bass and does his thing like nothing happened and proceeds with the clinic...
Thanks Jazz Video Guy....your videos and comments are always interesting.... We're lucky to have you....so thanks from the heart....Jaco and Jean Toots Thielemans are fantastic...from another planet...♥️
Considering that Belgium was already liberated by the Allied forces (Sep '44 to Jan '45) when Bird and Diz hadn't even cut their very first record (Blue 'N' Boogie / Groovin' High; Feb 28, 1945), this bebop smuggling story, which I've never heard before, must be a Belgian legend. I once heard Toots tell the story that he encountered bop *after* the war and had, a little later, the opportunity to jam with the bebop greats at the famous 1949 Paris jazz festival. From D-Day on, i.e. the better half of '44, the German forces were on the retreat, long before the first bebop 78s reached European shores... or were even *waxed* on the other side of the Atlantic.
Doesn't get any better than this....beautiful composition "Three Views Of A Secret" ...very emotional piece of music 🎶
Happy Birthday buddy. Love you man.

Appreciate the kind words, Vidal. I was very lucky to see Jaco with Weather Report, and Toots with his own band. Memorable!
Jaco was a master! He is missed!
He left us much much too soon.
So beautiful and soulful! ❤

Jaco seen Toots and genius recognized genius.
