Every time I went to Southern Cross, you could SMELL the fumes, the lack of Ventilation is appalling.
The overall design of the roof is really nice. Fumes are still an issue though.
Whoever thought that roof design would expel the diesel fumes

Good to know the architectural story behind the station that I board the train from every day to work. Good job
Try sitting on the platform on a cold winter's morning - then it becomes just a cold windswept barn! At least the old station had an air conditioned concourse where passengers could gather and access train information and refreshments before going to their platforms. And if you enter at the Collins Street entrance you can walk up to 2 city blocks just to get to your train. As was pointed out on the video the old station brought you up in the middle of the platforms. All show and no real improvement!
The English architect on the video says that Melbourne gets lots of 40 degree days when the average is less than 2 per year. i suspect he didn't understand Melbourne's climate (which averages 2 degrees warmer than London) and designed the station for his English stereotype of Australia which is a climate closer to Brisbane's than Melbourne's. The station is certainly a bitterly cold place in winter.
There were spaces for passemgers to wait, however the operator degraded and closed them. No profit in it?
Unfortunately, it is a case of form over function, as the non-mechanical ventilation system doesn't work sufficiently, so the station is one big holding cell for diesel fumes. Pathetic
thay really did well with the architecture that architecture is more form than function because isn't the design of the roof floored because it lets the diesel fumes linger
Compared to the former eyesore that was Spencer Street, it's a vast improvement. Overhead gantries could have been incorporated into the structure. The pre-existing stanchions make the whole thing look a bit cobbled together.
Gets very hot a lot of time? I live in Melbourne its always cold here ...... don’t design and then come up with reasons to sell it .......... i like the design though
They did a really good job with this one, I really don't understand how people could prefer the old station.
Take a trip up to Richmond. Thank God they haven't ruin that icon.

What a disaster this design turned out to be. I love train stations but this one is dark, cold, gloomy and fumey. Very bleak. Can easily miss your train trying to get to the platform from the street. Sorry Bracksey, not the legacy you probably hoped for.
I actually love the Wavy design.
It's nothing like the new Belgium railway station.seriously the flooring is uneven at Southern cross Bitumen is used instead of tiles or paving stone.
The terminals are very confusing platform 1a and platform 1.
platform is 16 is way over the other side of the preicent of the country terminals just to catch metropolitan Trains.
The ceiling captures country trains Diesels.fumes is choking with fumes.
The lighting is poor and dingy.
It's a Disgrace of a railway station built for the modern era.
It's appalling and yet limited seating...oh yes to the furthest west entry is steps u have to climb.
The architecture and layout is actually not making trains depart on time they are still bottle necked waiting for other trains to move onwards whilst the delay in signalling is not in accordance with the timetable schedule.departure or arrivals
If you disagree have a look at the inner and exterior of the building...

Southern Cross is just the name of the station.
All of that sounds great in theory, but the reality is that the roof doesn't work at all. The whole station stinks of diesel fumes, the platforms are further away than before. It takes longer to get to them, as you have to travel up then down several stories to get to them. It's cold and windswept in winter, dark and gloomy all the time. The old station may not have been modern, but it was functional, with roofs only over the platforms, not over the whole station. The new station, from a user-experience point of view, is a failure. Nobody loves it, they only use it because they have to. The only iconic station in the Melbourne CBD is Flinders Street.
Leaves Sydney Central for dead.
A more relevant question is why is there still diesel train in 2020
Pity it doesn’t work
Whatever the intent, the result was non-functional space. High ambient noise, brown clouds of diesel fumes, insufficient capacity for entry/exit/platform during peak. Cheap tarmac platforms with nowhere to wait for trains off peak. Cluttered and cramped interchange. Lighting that failed on 2/3rds of the roof.
Have any of these folks ever been inside the finished product? Full of fumes.
