- 3GNY Stories Live: WEDU Wednesdays take place Wednesdays at 8:00 pm ET. In this virtual series, grandchildren of Holocaust survivors share their family stories with us. You'll also learn more about our educational initiative, WEDU ("We Educate"), which trains 3Gs to learn and share their family stories in school classrooms.
Join us as 3GNY volunteer Bella Brandeis shares the story of her grandfather, Otto Brandeis.
Otto was born in Poland in 1911 as the oldest of five children. Almost immediately after Germany invaded Poland in 1939, his family was forced into the ghetto, where he witnessed his father’s death and his brother’s disappearance. He was on the second to last transport out of the Lodz Ghetto and imprisoned in Auschwitz before being sent to perform slave labor at a subcamp of Gross-Rosen.
Otto credits his ability to perform manual labor, coupled with sheer luck, with how he survived the war. After liberation he reunited with his brother in a displaced persons camp before immigrating to the United States.
About Bella:
Bella Brandeis is the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors. She completed 3GNY's WEDU training in 2021 as a way to honor her grandfather and keep his memory alive by sharing his story in classrooms. She feels fortunate that his recorded testimony is part of USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive, and Bella references his storytelling directly as she carries on his legacy. She is currently working to piece together her grandmother’s story.
Bella grew up in Boston but has called New York City home for the past 12 years. She works in advertising sales as an Account Director for a premium streaming service.
If you know educators looking to bring our speakers into their classrooms, please contact WEDUscheduling@3gnewyork.org.
