The Tower of Life: Restoring Humanity to the Victims of the Holocaust, Featuring Chana Stiefel
The Tower of Life: Restoring Humanity to the Victims of the Holocaust
Featuring Chana Stiefel
Join 3GNY, Michael Mantell, and the Rededication Project for an incredible book talk with author Chana Stiefel as she discusses her award-winning children's book, The Tower of Life: How Yaffa Eliach Rebuilt Her Town in Stories and Photographs.
Children’s book author Chana Stiefel will share the story behind her award-winning picture book biography, The Tower of Life: How Yaffa Eliach Rebuilt Her Town in Stories and Photographs, illustrated by Susan Gal, published by Scholastic. Professor Yaffa Eliach was one of the only survivors of her Polish shtetl, Eishyshok. She became a world-renowned Jewish historian and expert on the Holocaust. As a member of President Jimmy Carter’s Commission on the Holocaust, Yaffa’s mission was to restore humanity to the victims of her town. In 1993, she created the Tower of Faces, a soaring photographic exhibit in the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. In her talk, Chana will discuss her inspiration for writing the book, archival photos from Yaffa’s extraordinary collection, as well as Yaffa’s lasting legacy of hope and resilience during these difficult times.
About Chana
Chana Stiefel is the award-winning author of more than 30 books for children. Her picture book, The Tower of Life: How Yaffa Eliach Rebuilt Her Town in Stories and Photographs (Scholastic), has won many honors, including the 2023 Sydney Taylor Book Award, a Robert F. Sibert Honor, the Margaret Wise Brown Prize, and the Malka Penn Award for Human Rights in Children’s Literature. Chana’s other nonfiction titles include Let Liberty Rise: How America’s Schoolchildren Helped Save the Statue of Liberty (Scholastic) and the upcoming Let’s Fly (Dial, 2025), co-written with Captain Barrington Irving, who broke records as the youngest person and first Black man to fly solo around the world. By hiring Amy Spitalnick, a former staffer for J Street and Democratic politicians like former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the group has sent a clear message to the rest of the Jewish world about its priorities. It is all-in on the policy agenda of the left wing of the Democratic Party and their every partisan talking point. It mimics their stand on “democracy” (i.e., smearing conservatives as “fascists”). It pretends that the threat from antisemitism lies only on the extreme right.

I'm also descended from holocaust survivors. Dave Reckess and I have swapped emails. My father, aunt, and grandparents were so incredibly lucky (as all survivors were) to be among the only 982 European refugees brought to America during WWII, then housed at the one and only small refugee center in Oswego, NY. I'm so touched by Dave's story of his Bubi Sarah. And so grateful he shares it so generously. And I'm grateful to all involved in 3GNY/WEDU. We bear a special responsibility, descendants who were so lucky to be born and grow free of the terrors our families knew. In this new century, we see again the dangers remain. We don't study history to understand the past. We study it to understand the present and prepare for the future. Your work helps enormously with that effort. Thank you.

Misinformation at the best - "dr" Sliwa should know Poland did not nationalised any heirless property just like other countries in the world. I also hope "world renowned" writer and thinker Mr Kaiser is working on another book on collaboration of Jews with Nazi Germany in extermination of their own Jewish nation, i.e. Judenraths, Jewish police and Jewish gestapo.

Thank you so much for sharing the story of your Grandma Dina. I am a tennis friend of your mom, Sara and she is so proud of you - rightfully so. I have read many books regarding the Holocaust, both fiction and non-fiction and I am always amazed by the strength of many people. As a grandmother of a 3 and 5 year old- I can only hope and pray that they have such love and interest in my life, as you do. Both, my mother and father (they met in NY) when they were young, left Spain due to the Spanish Civil war and the conditions in Spain. Unfortunately, they never shared there life stories and never spoke of it. You are, certainly, blessed to have this wonderful experience with your grandmother. Again - thank you for keeping your grandmother and her family's story alive. Thank you again - keep sharing - Angela Scarnato

Slawek’s work has been such an inspiration to me. As a 2G whose father was from Poland, I have visited the neglected cemeteries of my relatives. As a result of watching the loving work of Slawek’s restorations, I am hoping to spend some time in Poland during the summer of 2022 doing the same. It will be the 80th anniversary of my grandparents’ murder in the woods outside the woods of Stary Sacz. Thank you 3GNY for the wonderful work you do! PS Coincidentally, I found out that my friend Mateusz knows Slawek through their commitment to keeping the memories of Jewish life in Poland alive!

Sharon. Although I grew up in Israel where many people of my parent’s generation where survivors, and we learned about the holocaust from a very young age, it felt very different and more personal coming from you, especially since I met your grandfather. For some reason most of my parent’s generation never wanted to talk about that dark time in history. Unfortunately, growing up I never thought about asking my grandparents about their experience during WWI or my parents experience during WWII. You and your family are lucky to have been able to hear your grandparent’s stories so you can pass it over to the next generation. We have to keep this memory alive, or else history may repeat itself.
