If the Basement has flooded in the past, you may want to pull off a baseboard and just check behind it for water damage. If the basement flooded previously and then was painted over you could have mold behind the walls and will not know until it gets really bad. A quick check behind the baseboard could save you time and money down the road if there is damage.
Guys, dealing with mold is serious business. #1- you need to wear a respirator and gloves. When you moved the flooring outside you released mold spores. Next time, seal off the room and put all the affected material in large black plastic bags (the size for leaves 33 gallons) once the bags are sealed you can move them out. I did exactly what you did and a month later after starting to get sick, we had to have professional mold remediation at a cost of $13,000.00 USD. Hopefully you wont have to do that.
I had no idea it was that expensive to get professionals to do it. I completely agree with your statements about how to remove it. I'd add that a "mold scrubber" afterwards would help a lot. @@DavidHalpern2
Not just saving money saving your health. Mould is extremely dangerous I know I been ill because I did not know it was hidden. I started caughing and I didn't know why until I moved things and found the hidden mould.
Just a suggestion. An inexpensive interim solution for your rec room flooring is an epoxy paint. You can just install your final flooring right over it, but the cement will look more "finished" until then. I love squirrel being so helpful with the decorating. And ❤ to Charlie. Suggest you use pine-sol to wash down the basement. It will forever get rid of that “urine” smell the dampness causes. Also, you should stick a water hose in the basement drain and flush it out and be sure it is not plugged. You might want to have a sump pump installed in the basement if it does not have one.
Just a suggestion, after you clean the mold in the basement, stain and seal concrete. They are beautiful and easy to clean up since it can flood again. You can use area rugs for comfort around the furniture. I LOVE SQUIRREL so much, cats and Christmas trees priceless!
You all just make me smile. Loved the flood. We had 144,000 gallons of water wash through our lake cabin basement after the main line broke. We know this because it emptied the subdivision water tank... several people were upset. Anyway, guess something can be said for poor construction as all the water just washed out through the basement door and we ended up with a really clean basement floor. We left a large fan on for about a month with the windows open. We got really lucky as there was minimal damage. Our neighbors had a similar event several years before but their slider door held tight until the basement was about 3 feet deep. Then door blew open. They had to replace the basement dry wall and the slider. So, goes to show you that there is always something. Have fun.
Guys.. hopefully, the only mold you find was under that flooring, but you need to pop off a piece of the trim along the floor and check to make sure there's not any growing behind it. As you already know, that mold can make you sick, and I'm sure you'd rather be safe than sorry. The basement looks cozy. The house is gorgeous.

I am so happy that you and your family have a place to be warm and comfortable this winter. Having room to spread out is a blessing when you are used to being in a much smaller area. Enjoy yourselves! You have certainly earned it!
Solution for future flooding downstairs is to isolate the problem area with a dam/levee step over, with drainage to the outside. Automatic bilge pumps also work well.😊

I agree !! Life goes by really fast savor each moment !! Hard work is rewarding but you deserve some down time ! I always have had a close relationship to my family so it warmed my heart to see Todd’s folks visiting !! Here kitty kitty !
Guys, love the new place! if you have an issue with flooding, I recommend that you look into getting a sump pump and possibly a french drain installed and not spend much money fixing up the basement. I have a home that had flooding issues before I purchased it. I purchased it with a French drain, a sump pump, and some material that they put on the walls to prevent water from seeping in. I’m sorry, but I don’t know what that material is called. It’s a significant expense to have that all installed, but I’ve been here for almost 2 years and haven’t seen a drop of water in the basement. There is also a whole house dehumidifier in the basement that connects directly to the sewer outlet. So you never have to empty a humidifier of water. If you notice any damp smells in the basement, I would strongly recommend that you get that as well.
Try painting the floor downstairs! A bit of primer and a gallon or two of porch and floor paint!! Cheap and cheerful, and really easy to do! I painted my concrete floor in my apartment white! I really like it and it has been a really practical floor!
It's so funny b/c I know exactly what you mean by just hanging out. But my life is exactly the opposite: when I want to "just hang out" I go camping. When I'm there, there's no laundry to do, dishes to wash, kids who need to be taken somewhere, etc. I love it b/c there's literally nothing I CAN do when out there (I go in my air conditioned pop-up w/king-sized bed, lol). This house is so amazing, so glad you guys are where you wanna be.

I know what ever you do to make it your own will only improve the cottage! The lake views are stunning ! Charlie looks well. Hope you're loving the house! I can't wait to see the new cozy living room with wood stove, fun furniture, and a bottle of your home made wine. Another great video! Peace!!
Having followed you guys from early days, it took watching "Our dreams have changed, and that's OK" on 'Tangents' (which I absolutely adore) to fully understand why it it was time for you to move on. It wasn't a case of abandoning 'The Land' but deciding to deal with all that it required, especially in the midst of Canadian winters, in a different way. My initial reaction was "Oh no, they're leaving 'The Land'!" but now I get it, 100%. It obviously wasn't easy, far from it, but you made the right decision. You've fallen on your feet and found an absolutely stunning house on what has to be one of the most beautiful lake-front properties in Nova Scotia. How brilliant is that?! Life moves in stages. We all arrive at times in our lives when it's time to move on - and from which there will be no going back. That's hard, really hard, but OK. Life would be very boring otherwise. You guys are so obviously together, together, come what may. That is all that matters. You'll figure out the rest and it it won't be exactly what you planned, now or in the future. Enjoy the moment, today, every day and during all the days to come. As a 74 year-old gay guy, bonded at the hip to my one-time boyfriend, then civil partner, now husband, for 30 years (we first met in 1993 and never looked back), I offer you this quote from 'Avatar': "I see you". It will be an absolute pleasure to continue following your journey. Your videos and podcasts always brighten up my day. Long may they continue.
Please get a full survey done, if you haven't already. No more surprises. Make sure damp and mold is fully gone, pets are more susceptible to it and it can affect them badly. Bleach doesn't kill it properly. Charlie with the toy was adorable Happy decorating 😊💜
Really good that the flood happened to you so early in your ownership. You mentioned that there had been water and some of the floor removed. But your flood caused you to decide to do the right thing and remove the rest of the flooring, and thus discovering the latent mold that had been there already. Great to get that out of the house! The rec room and Christmas tree look terrific.
Basements usually have drain tiles in them, I had a carpeted basement when I moved into my place, we ripped it out and I put an epoxy floor in, they paint it, put in speckled paint chips in whatever colour I wanted, and then coated in in an epoxy finish, it’s really nice, everyone wants one in their basement or garage after seeing mine! Let me know if you’d like me to send you a photo of it!
Guys, I’d dry the basement out and just paint and seal the floor. Get furniture with legs and spray the legs with clear flex seal to protect legs. You guys rock, you’ll get it done!
I love Todd's love for Christmas and his deaign ideas while Tyler is practical. "Why do we need a Christmas tree down here? " Todd"Incase I'm watching Chriatmas movies!" Like DUH! 😂❤
I enjoyed seeing your happiness. Your previous videos have had some sadness and tiredness. This one was just so happy and relaxed. Even with Todds neck pain, it still showed your happiness.
Hi ❤ TODD highly recommend a cervical pillow. I have struggled severely with a reoccurring crick in my neck from a thoracic muscle spasm I had a few years ago. The cervical pillow does give me some relief- takes a little getting used to it, but might help ya! As well as a shoulder/neck heating pad. I feel for you, just the lack of sleep alone from neck pain can drive you insane. 😢 hugs! And warm wishes and holiday cheer your way! 😊😊
You guys, it is so nice to see you settle in at your new and SO beautiful home! After having seen your podcast, where you described your journey through the last four years, this was the time for me to realize what you have been through with all the crazy things happening during the build. Although I am following all the way through since you just started there, it seems I missed out on a lot, or maybe it was only behind the scenes. I really needed the podcast to understand how much you were longing for a bit of normalcy in your everyday life. I am so glad you made that lucky find of the (century) lakefront, its a stunning place and I grant you that from all of my heart.....have the time of your life you two. And I hope it is giving you back the heart and the strength to get on with your other property, because its so beautiful too and you put such a heart wrenching lot of hard work into it. much love to you all
Basement floor - clean and seal it, then install glued-down commercial grade vinyl plank. It's expensive, but won't be affected by water or flooding. It's used for large stores located in flood-prone areas to reduce the cost of repairs post-flood.
So good to see Charlie doing so well. Basement space is coming together well. Quite handy having that garage door access on that level I'm sure. Squirrel is such a character. When my cats get extra loving and needing like that, it usually means their food bowl has been empty for 5 minutes and they are dying of starvation! My older cat taps my face when I'm asleep at night, so annoying. The view is beautiful from your main living area. I can understand why you enjoy those morning coffees on the deck. You definitely need a fire pit down by the lake for those nice winter days that cry out for mulled wine by a fire! Does Todd race to the stores straight after Christmas to stock up on all the Christmas clearance sales. You now have 3 homes to decorate so he is not going to be happy unless every available space is sparkly for Christmas
Omgosh, my heart, when Charlie picked up the gnome. He was so happy! 😊 Oh, I miss seeing 'The Land'. I totally understand you moving into a permanent house. 🙂
Polished concrete would look amazing on the basement floor! It’s an industrial look but can also be stained and if you ever had water problems it would never need replaced. Just mopped
I love Todd’s idea of an indoor / outdoor fireplace. As a fellow Canadian, I don’t know how practical it would be in the winter. Another fun video gentlemen. I hope Todd gets better soon.
I'm so thrilled to see you two so passionate about your new home. That view is worth millions along with the serenity of the site. Making a cozy nest is for some of us so important and you always do that wherever you are. Trust the taking care of the mold is relatively easy. I too am facing the prospect of removing parts of two ceilings that each have a patch of what I am told is black mold and we have yet to find it's source, Loving how this decision to buy the house was the absolute best and has you looking forward with excitement and joy. Bravo 👏👏👏 Sending much love from CT. ❤
Thank you both for sharing, you guys have such a beautiful family there. It looked so cozy and peaceful watching you putting up the tree and decorations with the boys and squirel all there ,The view of the lake is spectacular ,I bet its gorgeous at sunrise and sunset ,so glad that Charlie is doing better and that Todd's neck is better . Til next time take care and love sent your way.❤
Tile can lift too with a flood. We have a basement with same issues and we finally just sealed it with epoxy. Best thing ever!! No more mold under flooring.
Instead of going from the outside for the foundation repair, perhaps do as we did and remove the drywall and fnd the crack in the foundation as it does not look like your house has a cinder-block foundation. If you find the cracks in the foundation you can drill holes, insert these nipples in and pump in a liquid that sets and seals the cracks. My husband used to do foundation repairs and this is what he would do first if it was a viable option because it cost saving and much faster, plus all the drywall/drywall studs are probably all moldy anyways
Guys I love your new place! I know everyone throws all kinds of ideas at you. Sorry, I have another! It seems all basement floors have the potential to leak from time to time. If you put tile on it, it can still have voids between the tile & concrete where water can stand & eventually sour & mold. Of course you want to get the French drain issue corrected. But something you could do that would work well is. Stain & polish the existing concrete. They are beautiful! You can blend the stains to give it a stone look. Then just put area rugs down for softness & warmth. I hope Todd gets better soon! Again congrats on your new place! Have a great week!!
Your ew home is so stunning setting by the lake. What a great view from the living room. With the flooding in the basement have you thought about a polished concrete finish instead of laminate flooring? No mold or allergy problems with that type of finish. Can't believe Christmas is so close. Peace Love Happiness 💖
With that amount of damp and the water you’ve had down there, i’d leave it for a while to let it dry out properly and ensure there is no more mould. Better safe than sorry!
Love the new basement.. I don’t often throw advice but….. A great Epoxy finish on the floor , any colour or pattern, so if it floods ever again the concrete will not hold moisture, you will have less chance of growing mould and it’s s freaking easy to keep clean. If you have some outdoor rugs on the floor as well, they will not get ruined by damp. Then , later when you can see your way clear, you can tile easily. Cheers, and I love your new place❤️❤️❤️
Think about getting Mike Holmes involved in the basement flooding, outside water damage. That would be a cool multimedia tie in for him and you. Two great Canadian media identities. I know I couldn’t live with a moldy basement problem. You guys are stronger and more positive thinking than most of us.
Until you solve the flooding issues, I'd leave the basement floor as is. Just make sure that the drain works, see if you need a pump, and put in a proper drain cover. Even tile can get damaged by floods. Love how the basement set up turned out.
I had a cat in high school named Aphrodite....she loved to climb into bags, boxes or anything my mom hid behind the living room couch. One day our mom's brothers family was visiting and they brought their full size Dachshund. He immediately went behind the couch and suddenly there was Aphrodite launching herself out of a paper bag and over the top of the couch . It was amazing to see....but the cat was not happy!
My basement idea: remove the laminate floor (as you're doing) and get the cement fixed up and painted really nice and well sealed. Use some nice area rugs that can be moved if flooding is imminent. As much as I loathe mold, that's how much I love cats!! They make life so much better.
bleach kills mold just keep the garage doors open to air the fumes out. Definitely a sub pump. Hopefully your foundation isn’t cracked under those walls. That’s what happened to my friend and when they took the walls down you could see it.
Because you had black mold on the floors I think you should find a product that would not allow it to grow back again. They suggest to dry out the moisture and also run a de-humidifier. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but I do want both of you and all of your sweet pets to be safe. 💗🌹💗
It's going to grow back again because there are mold spores in the air and on the walls and under the wall board. The floor needs to be washed with soap and water or bleach, both are mold killers. They need to hook up their dehumidifier again and an air cleaner. Mold is a really serious issue that needs to be addressed asap.
I cannot believe how much of a difference just a few pieces of furniture has made to this space…while not having to sit on the floor is nice, being able to share our new home with friends and family has been the best part. Try painting the floor downstairs! A bit of primer and a gallon or two of porch and floor paint!! Cheap and cheerful, and really easy to do! I painted my concrete floor in my apartment white! I really like it and it has been a really practical floor!
Really nice to see you guys not « slavering » but simply putting together your new nest. Welcome home!
4:04 the way your dogs were up and alert the moment Todd told about the chiropractor visit ❤ they really sense that there is some emotions in the air.
And 13:01 Squirrel going all in with the new setup of boxes: she clearly thinks that the boxes are for her and not enjoying all the commotion with the stuff removed from them. She is really a sweetheart and bestest of cats 🥰
I’m so happy for you two !❤️❤️. Finally! Home Sweet 🏡 Home! Well deserved! I adore the two of you… I mean, all five of you…🤗. ❤️❤️❤️
3:56 Todd, Cyber Hug!!!! I hope your pain goes away soon! Please feel better soon! You bring so much joy with your gritty sense of humor. You deserve the best!
I so felt for him when he came in and asked for a hug as I've been there too with my back. Bless him x
Bless Todd's heart, he looks like he's in pain. I hate that for him. Praying for y'all. 💜✨😘
You know it's Sunday, when Tyler and Todd are on our screens. Having my snacks and going to watch the vlog. Sending you love, Tyler and Todd. 😊🤗❤️👍
Boys, I have been following you for at least two years and I am so proud for you both in regards to your new cottage !! It is beautiful !! I know what ever you do to make it your own will only improve the cottage! The lake views are stunning ! I live with my partner of 39 years in a cottage built in 1928 in Normaltown ( Athens, Georgia). We have been here since 1988 and have created a lovely large garden ! We both retired a few years back and we garden full time ! I wish you many years of love and happiness . It is difficult to watch Charlie decline but your love and care for him is heart warming !! Thanks for sharing with all of your fans ❤.. KEEP YOUR KITTIES CLEAN !! I know Todd has a big kitty !! I pray his neck is feeling better !!
So happy you feel at home and cozy...Charlie is walking better, which is a blessing. Eddie kept tabs on every move of the sofa construction. Squirrel is absolutely adorable!
I'm sorry my English may be a little broken, but I wanted to say, you two seem so much happier, as when I started following you, and that makes me feel happy too.
Charlie looks well. Hope you're loving the house! I can't wait to see the new cozy living room with wood stove, fun furniture, and a bottle of your home made wine. Another great video! Peace!!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video!!
Charlie with the toy was adorable
Happy decorating 😊💜
Overlooking the water pure magic you will never get tired of it x
A parental sleep over!!! Great idea!
Glad you are getting the mold out.
Watching you create your nest is magical. Loved everything about this video.
So much fun, love when we can all spend time together like this!
Love all the Squirrel sightings! She's the true star of the show, you know.
And I hope it is giving you back the heart and the strength to get on with your other property, because its so beautiful too and you put such a heart wrenching lot of hard work into it.
much love to you all
We couldn't be happier with our decision. The heaviness of winter coming was so overwhelming we are so at peace ❤️❤️
Basement floor - clean and seal it, then install glued-down commercial grade vinyl plank. It's expensive, but won't be affected by water or flooding. It's used for large stores located in flood-prone areas to reduce the cost of repairs post-flood.
The space is looking incredible! LOVE IT! Hope you are feeling better Todd.
I love your black cat. We had 2 black cats, brothers, Artie and Jet, no longer with us so, loved and missed.
You got a little piece of heaven
Omgosh, my heart, when Charlie picked up the gnome. He was so happy! 😊
Oh, I miss seeing 'The Land'.
We suggest that you put one of those water alarms down there that goes off when it senses water.
Your new home is so dreamy! Love watching it all come together, and so happy for the 5 of you:)
SquirrelLily is So Psyched!!! ❤
The rec room looks amazing. Great job guys🎇 Thanks again Squirrel for helping the guys out💛
I'm so thrilled to see you two so passionate about your new home. That view is worth millions along with the serenity of the site. Making a cozy nest is for some of us so important and you always do that wherever you are. Trust the taking care of the mold is relatively easy. I too am facing the prospect of removing parts of two ceilings that each have a patch of what I am told is black mold and we have yet to find it's source,
Loving how this decision to buy the house was the absolute best and has you looking forward with excitement and joy. Bravo 👏👏👏 Sending much love from CT. ❤
Great job guys! Love watching you transform your new space!! 🥂🎉
Your cabin is so beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing the cozy winter mood with us! 🔥❄️
Am I the only one who laughed when Todd emptied a box for his little princess? Exactly what happens at my house too! 🤣🐈⬛🐈
Til next time take care and love sent your way.❤
" she told me she wanted it". Lmao.....that's me!!! Love your kids they are all precious!
i cant wait for summer at the lake!!!! Kayak camping?? My dog Oreo LOVED coming on the kayak with me! (shes tiny though ahah)
Oh wowwww I never even thought of that but you're right! The dogs would LOVE that (we'd have to get a canoe tho lol)
Tile can lift too with a flood. We have a basement with same issues and we finally just sealed it with epoxy. Best thing ever!! No more mold under flooring.
The cottage is coming together beautifully! I love the basement space so much already! ❤️🐾🐱🐾❤️
@4:00 That's what I call a good hug 🫂❤
What is the flooding coming from?
Insurance -lawyer
Instead of going from the outside for the foundation repair, perhaps do as we did and remove the drywall and fnd the crack in the foundation as it does not look like your house has a cinder-block foundation. If you find the cracks in the foundation you can drill holes, insert these nipples in and pump in a liquid that sets and seals the cracks. My husband used to do foundation repairs and this is what he would do first if it was a viable option because it cost saving and much faster, plus all the drywall/drywall studs are probably all moldy anyways
The lovely Lake house is taking shape. Kindly investigate and take care of the flooding in the basement as soon as possible.
Place is looking fabulous, guys, well done. The one who seems to have taken to the place best seems to be Squirrel! She is in heaven there!
Stopped watching to say OMG… LOVE LOVE LOVE the see through fireplace idea!!!
I love how Squirrel "helped" you assemble the couch!
Your ew home is so stunning setting by the lake. What a great view from the living room. With the flooding in the basement have you thought about a polished concrete finish instead of laminate flooring? No mold or allergy problems with that type of finish. Can't believe Christmas is so close. Peace Love Happiness 💖
Beautiful home/beautiful dogs/beautiful place
Just wanted to say yall seem so much happier and even by the sound of your voices you can tell stress is about gone.
Remember Tyler and Todd , BREATH
I love your relationship. You are so kind to each other(on camera, anyway). I wish that I could find someone who would love me like that. 🥰🥰🥰😝🤭
You guys are stronger and more positive thinking than most of us.
squirrel looks so much more cozy and comfy in her new house while sitting on that furniture!
Your new home is feeling cozy. A wood burning stove would be the icing on the cake. Thanks for the video.
They make life so much better.
i ca't wait to see darcy & jerr !!! you guys will be the best squad on youtube
bleach kills mold just keep the garage doors open to air the fumes out. Definitely a sub pump. Hopefully your foundation isn’t cracked under those walls. That’s what happened to my friend and when they took the walls down you could see it.
I love you guys. I feel like I’m on this journey through life with you.
