This will be the first Christmas without my husband. But I try to remember the reason for the season is to celebrate our good Lord's birthday. And I have no doubt my husband is with him in Heaven. Our tradition of stockings on Christmas eve ( my husband's favorite) will continue. And letting our grandbabies decorate our tree. God Bless and Luv to you both and your furbabies
Todd, regarding Santa, the Christmas season after my then husband told me he wanted a divorce, I took my 3 year old daughter to see Santa at the mall. I was so depressed but this was for her. The mall had several levels with a central court where Santa was. We were 2 levels up, I looked down and Santa looked up at me, our eyes met. His were twinkling and he gave me an encouraging smile. Yes Todd, Santa does exist!

Hello, I agree with your thinking about gifting people. I am 71 years old now and when I was young I was much more interested in acquiring “stuff”. Many things have happened in my life to me, and at this point in my life I have all the “stuff” I need. Cards mean a lot more to me than any gift. I have only one son (he’s 37 now) and he has never earned much money. The only gift he has given me was about 5 years ago, he had a professional photo taken of him, bought a frame for it and sent it to his father and I ( were divorced). I, too, rather spend time with him. As a matter of fact, this past Thanksgiving we spent the first Thanksgiving together. We went to a lovely restaurant ( that he picked out) and he paid for his meal and I paid for my own. I am on a limited budget (retirement) and it did work for me to pay for mine and his too. We live for the first time in decades in the same state (4 hours from each other). However, he lives with a roommate in an apartment and there is no place for guests to sleep. So… I stayed in a hotel when I went there for Thanksgiving. Hopefully, he will becoming to my house for Christmas Eve dinner. If he gets here that means more to me than any material thing that he could give me. Spending some time together is the most important thing to me. Elizabeth Goodrich, Texas

This will be a strange Christmas for me. It will be a lonely one. No family or friends to spend time with. It is kind of sad, but not something that I am overly upset about. For those who do have family and friends, cherish them and enjoy the time you have. Remember those who are no longer with you.
I love time on my own ...I have never liked Christmas even as a child I was made to see others open presents as I had none because I had been naughty ...wth . So I wish to be talking to my lot who have passed . ❤
I have spent xmas day alone, too. I would wear pjs all day and then in the afternoon, I would think, this is when my family would argue and children needed a nap and instead I was peaceful!😀. Think about the negative aspects of xmas and you’ll be better. It can be a relaxing day, where you can do anything you want. Merry Xmas! It’s just a day.

I am taken aback that anyone would comment on your weight. It has never crossed my mind to even think about that. I’m glad you addressed it. As for Christmas, I love everything about it. Our home is fully decorated and I look forward to celebrating with family and friends.
Can I add that the promo shot made me laugh….the look on Todd’s face is one that can best be described as “oh my gawd, is Squirrel INSIDE the tree? She is working her way up to the top and smacking an ornament off of each branch as she goes. My Christmas balls are busting!” And Tyler is like, “wait, what? Did you say the cat is busting your balls?”

Loved your story about surprising your family by coming home for Christmas. A family story that is still talked about to this day is when my Uncle Bob was in Vietnam during the war (probably around 1968). He was granted "leave" by the military. Most troops would go to Japan for their time off. But he hitched a ride on a military aircraft (or 2 or 3 flights) to the west coast of the U.S. Then hitch hiked from California across the states to Oklahoma. He walked in the door Christmas morning surprising his mom and the whole family. Sadly, he had to leave just a day or two later to return to Vietnam. Later, he did come home from the war and lived a long life.
Like you both mentioned, living in northern climate, winter months can be depressing and a major let down following wonderful fall season and cozy holidays. This year, I’m finally breaking that cycle. I’ve pre-purchased two different quilting/sewing projects which will begin mid-January & February. Both projects are pre-paid & I’ll receive monthly kits with new blocks to eventually make a full size bed quilt. As a long time quilter, I really thrive working with my hands. Having two new monthly projects to look forward to is one of the greatest gifts to myself. I recently read a scientific journal article which summarized a long term study which identified that we actually release good endorphins when we works with our hands doing gardening, crafting or related hobbies. I’m sure you two could think of a skill you each enjoy creating something for your home. Here near Lake Tahoe, the Sierra are snow covered but we’ve not yet had snowfall in the valley.

I know I’ve commented already, but this is basically an addendum. obviously people myself included really enjoy your “Tangents”, that said, watching both of you talk amongst each other must be so therapeutic as well. You cannot possibly walk away from these conversations without feeling good about what you have accomplished. I know I do. And that’s important sometimes and all hassle conversation is such a nice thing to enjoy. Thank you.( again🥰)
Selfishly - it's our fav part about these. Very rarely do we get to chat, staring into each others eyes for an hour. Whenever we finish a recording we say "ugh, I'm so glad we just did that". I hope that feeling never goes away!
Good morning. Listening to your Christmas memories makes me very nostalgic. My Hollidays were like Todd’s. Christmas Eve after midnight mass, we had a “Revellion”. Family from my dads side came over until the wee hours. My mother would put out a big spread. The next morning ( all tired) we opened our gifts, had a big brunch then went and visited my mothers side of the family. She had a Turkey and a Ham in the oven. Had a big supper. When I had my own family, I looked at my mother and told her she was a super mom. Amazed at the lack of sleep she went through during the holidays and was always smiling and joking. My dad was more quiet. He had a retail business so he worked all the time. Thinking of all this, they are great memories. Merry Christmas and wishing you both the best. 🎄❄️☃️🎅🏻🍷🍷💕💕
There are so many things I could comment on in this video as it seems we are on the same page in most things that were discuss, but what made me chuckle is how I can relate to being told at approximately the same age, about Santa. My brother said to my father, "Isn't it time you had the discussion about Santa with M-J." Poor dad, he looked at me and said, "You have a couple of choices, you can choose to believe or you can choose not to believe." I was the youngest and I could see it was breaking his heart to even bring up this topic. I looked straight into his eyes and said, "I choose to believe." His reaction was a huge hug and he responded by saying, "I do too." I'll never forget it and I, at 71, still believe. I have a intellectually challenged daughter who is 46 and she absolutely still believes. It makes Christmas so special. We decorate our tree on her birthday each year as it is close to Christmas. She loves the eggnog, Christmas shows and the music we play on her special day. I'm actually agnostic, but that doesn't have to make any difference about Santa. I treat Christmas as a time to be with family, if possible. We do exchange gifts (only with our adult children), but that's not what it's all about. It's being together with the people you love and the best gift anyone can give is their time and letting them know that they are important to you. Everyone deserves to feel loved regardless of the time of year, but Christmas should be a reminder of the importance of making sure those sentiments are known.
Happy Holidays Guys 🥰 As I am single and don't want to travel at this time of year, I have decided to do what I did last year, and that is have Christmas lunch at a club. I get a great meal (which I didn't have to cook) and then go home and take an afternoon nap because I will be in a food coma!! No stress and no drams. All The best, Take care. 🤩
My son, who is a travel nurse flew in from STL for the day as a surprise for both me and their dad who lives about 20 minutes from me. I hadn't seen him since the September the year prior, it was the BEST gift ever
I love both you guys so much, but Todd, I really relate to you. I used to work in a craft and fabric store, which sold zillions of ornaments. One of my jobs was to decorate trees to merchandise the ornaments. Every year I decorated at least 30 trees a year, each with its own theme. I loved it. Now I’m an older woman, (70), and My son and I have to watch Xmas movies together: White Christmas, It’s a wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th St., A Christmas Carol, The Shop Around the Corner, and the Bishops Wife. I love Christmas!

I still am a believer. The magical season of giving, hope, excitement and happiness. In whatever form it comes…walking to see the lights at night…dreamy. Yes I will turn 70 in spring. We are a small family today…but growing up because of divorce…I lived that other travel life too Now our daughter makes Christmas..grandsons galore…hockey…their dogs give so much joy. I totally agree with you about moving away. My husband and I were married about a year after college and we immediately moved away. It was the best adventure! I firmly believe it made our marriage strong. We had to figure things out on our own and rely on each other. We built our lives and traditions on our own blending things from both of our families. 32 years later and we both still think back fondly on that time.
Age 69, still a Santa believer. The cementing miracle was my age 7 Christmas. I cried myself to sleep in front of roaring fireplace, thinking, How will he make it? Woke up, in my bed to find a blue full-size Schwinn bike in front of a cold fireplace. That Christmas Day I learned to ride and celebrated a very clever Santa. Never doubted. Plus, my actual Christmas baby turns 30 on Christmas. Those miracles have never stopped!
I can so relate. I don't like buying or receiving gifts just because it's Christmas. I hate opening a gift and it's obvious that they bought me a gift just because it's expected. I hate opening a gift and then thinking about how much I dislike it. I also watch all the sappy, predictable Christmas movies. 😊
I love Todd’s viewpoint on the number on the scale and body image. It should never be about what others think, and how we feel is what counts. Not just about how we feel about what our body looks like, but also how we feel (energy, aches, pains, emotions, etc). Others can’t determine if we are healthy just by looking at us. We know if something is off.
You guys gave me such a great idea! Go to thrift stores and get the unwanted ornaments that don’t have a home/tree for Christmas!! The Island of misfit ornaments! Bring them home and put them all on a tree together! They’d all be happy to be on a tree together and totally happy to be in a home again! ❤️💫🎄💫❤️
Since I have grandchildren & children in two different states we split the state every other year. Last year we spent Christmas here at home in Florida. We have 4 children and 5 grandchildren in Florida. This year we will spend Christmas in Ohio. We have 2 children and 6 grandchildren in Ohio. I love being able to split the holidays , birthdays etc accordingly each year. This way my children and grandchildren that live out of state still get that special time! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s podcast! Plus I am lucky enough to work for a company who gives us 2 weeks off for Christmas that’s how all of this is possible!
I didn't grow up into all that traditional stuff, but it really urks me to be forced to be where I don't want to be. I think that it takes away from the 'joy' that I am supposed to have. Everyone is happy, and I am guilted because I am not in their mood. We should remember that we are all unique and, at times, need to be allowed to be myself. Some care and understanding is needed under the circumstance.
Growing up, Christmas for my family was very much like it was for Tyler. My dad was in the British Army and we moved around a lot, so it was always just our family. Later, when I moved to Germany, I had to get used to having a lot of family around (from my mum’s side) and it became more like Todd’s Christmasses, going from one to the other. Here in Germany they celebrate and exchange gifts ob Christmas Eve, but I have to say I miss the coziness of Christmas as I knew it growing up, just waking up on Christmas Day, opening presents in front of the fireplace, a delicious traditional English Christmas dinner. Like you, I am also not religious, but I do love to decorate for Christmas. It’s just a shame my 57 square-meter flat is too small to put up a tree. Other than that, there are decorations all over and I just love my little Christmas village with lit-up houses.
I put Christmas decorations up in December and don’t take them down till the end of January. Then I decorate with a snowmen theme. It takes away the gloom of the remainder of winter and gets you ready for Spring👼🎄👏🤗🥰
I'm the oldest of 6 kids. My youngest sister was celebrating her & her husband 25th anniversary. So we wanted to surprise her by showing up at her mother in law's anniversary party that she was having. Unfortunately, there was a huge picture window with no curtain on it. She seen me first, then she seen my other 2 sisters & 1 brother. (my youngest brother was already there). She started yelling, that looks like Jody!! Omg Karen & Vicky too & Ed!! Omg!! She came out we started getting huge hugs!! The Best surprise ever!! Considering I live in AR, my other sister lives in Oklahoma, my other sister & brother live in MO.. Such a good surprise!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊
My daughter is 10 and she still believes! I have been telling her that I believe in the magic of the Holidays! The same happened with my oldest and she told me when she was 11 that she knew the truth, lol. 💕💕

Todd I’m 70 years old and my favorite tree memory is the Bubble lights. I’ve really wanted to do this since I’ve gotten older but they’re so expensive especially since you can only find them 10 on a string. I am a Christian and know that we don’t know the exact day our Savior was born and this is just a day designated to Celebrate it. I love your thrill for having so many trees. it’s such a great feeling to me. I’m only in a two bedroom small apartment now but make it as beautiful as as possible. As a child with 3 siblings and 2 wonderful parents, the magic would start about a month before with us kids flipping through the Sears christmas catalog together for days and days❤ Christmas Eve we were allowed to open one gift, and it was always new pajamas to snuggle in bed with. The magic was severe at our home. Magic, joy, love, happiness galore. ❤
Why do I enjoy these couch conversations so much? Really the discussion is generally pretty mundane, everyday life or whatever. Probably it is their honesty and definitely their humor. I always listen to the end.
Tyler, I can totally relate to being done when you're done. I'm a low-key, quiet homebody and when I would go home for Christmas I would end up migrating to the family room where the nephews and niece were playing video games to get away from the ever increasing noise of people talking/shouting over each other. I have excitable in-laws. Same at parties. When I've had enough socializing I drift off to the bookcase and get interested in a book in a quiet corner.
Your conversation about Holiday traditions prompts this reply. Since both John and I are in our 70s, are no longer into exchanging gifts (except those of the “experience” type, like a cruise to Ensenada!), and have a relatively small number of family members still alive and living close by, about 10 years ago we decided annually to pick a different country’s cuisine as our gift to each other and our families-Swedish, British, Japanese, French cuisine, etc. Since everyone traditionally meets at our home for Christmas, this year, for example, Portuguese/Spanish cuisine was chosen (Iberian Peninsula?); we are now busy buying paella pans and ingredients, peri peri chicken spices, vinho verde wine (and Tawny Port for dessert), etc. I am the “head chef,” but will gladly accept help from anyone. We have a blast preparing, cooking, and eating a feast every year on Christmas day and have had some very memorable experiences as a result!

December, January and February are my quietest months for work so it’s stressful for that reason ie no money coming in and bills to be paid. I absolutely LOVE Christmas though and this year my Ma and son are coming to share it with us so there’ll be a good amount of joy in the house. I’ll be writing for the rest of those quiet months but it is nerve wracking. ❤️

I especially hate the idea of housewarming gifts. If you want to decorate your house the way that you want to decorate it, and then people give you things that don’t fit your decor, it’s very awkward. And if you’re trying to declutter, a bunch of gifts just replace all the things that you were able to get rid of. I especially feel bad for parents who are struggling financially that children who think that money doesn’t matter to Santa. I agree that time is the best gift.
**** As far as your gift giving conversation.. I stopped buying 'personal' gifts for people... I had so many people swinging by that I finally started buying random gender-esk gifts.. I bought four Giant stockings and wrote Guys, Gals, Boys, Girls on them.. When folks came over they were welcome to pick a gift from whichever they chose. I buy random things throughout the year.. kitchen towels & utensils like spatulas, tongs.. small hammer & screwdrivers, electroc tape( they always, said 'oh I needed some of that tape) .. tape measures, flashlights... candles, sented lotions.. and of course coffee mugs.. some seasonal foods like box of hot chocolate, thin mints.. candy. Hair things and toys, books, coloring books, crayons, activity books.little hats, masks. for kiddos..etc. Nothing over $5... I would wrap them all up and pack then in the appropriate stocking.. THE KIDS LOVED IT MOST.. EVERY YEAR THEY COULDN'T WAIT! and no one ever got outdid (some even got the same gift haha bc I bought multiple of everything) The kids traded gifts.. and were excited to see what each other got.. there were no hard feelings or feeling bad. It turned into a sort of game.. they would feel and shake the packages and then feel and shake another one til they found the perfect one. I never knew how many people would stop by and I made sure I had enough for everyone without stressing out or spending a million dollars.. . I put out some snacking food that I changed out throughout the day so folks could munch away.. then we had laid back dinner whenever it was done and whoever was there at that time could eat if they wanted.. nothing formal, just sit wherever you can find a spot and are comfortable. It was the best way to share gifts without the pressure of finding the perfect gifts or forgetting someone that you didin't know was coming.. and Every Child got a gift even if I didn't know them yet. Everyone still talks about my Christmas Day party.. the memories are all about the time together and being excited. They say it was the best time.. I believe it had everything to do with not stressing over the perfect gifts and anyone getting let down that their gift was not as good as someone elses.. gift giving was a fun and excited suprise for all of us.. and funny how no one cared what it actually was.. We just had fun.. OH My.. how did this comment get so long!! ha.. HAPPY HOLIDAYS GUYS.. xoxoxxo

I still cry remembering how surprised/emotional my mum was when we surprised her for Christmas- is such a special memory especially since she has passed. For the adults for birthdays we all get together on a prearranged date for a meal and good company to celebrate by being together. Kids get gifts lol For Christmas gifts they are opened at our own homes- then we all get together for lovely meal we all chip in with the food and enjoy the company and conversation
Love the Christmas stories. When I was a child we used to have lunch with my mums family (enormous) and dinner with my dads family then the following year we flipped it. My parents were dairy farmers so we would get our santa presents to occupy us first but we had to wait until Dad had come in from milking and had his breakfast to open the gifts under the tree. He was sooo naughty and used to drag his breakfast out, read the newspaper from the day before etc until we were really desperate. It was always such a happy time for us. My Christmas is so quiet now. I have 2 adult sons and one grand daughter so I usually have my younger son and his wife come over for breakfast then in the afternoon I spend it with my older son, his partner and my very precious 2 year old grand daughter. Its summer here for Christmas but I did live in the UK for a couple of Christmas and it definitely felt right to have a Winter Christmas after a lifetime of hot Christmas. Tyler, we are almost twinning on the birthday front. Mine is on the 12th Dec!

I love your channel! I’m soon to be 75 and a few years ago got my 3 grown children and their spouses to agree to no gifts at Christmas except for the grandkids. We are all adults so I feel we can buy what we want so why have others spending time and money for something we may not want or need and then have to return. Our family all (including my ex and his current wife) get together for meals, games, drinking and conversation. You two have it all figured out. Sending you love and hugs. ❤️🤗❤️
When you announced Tangents, I didn't think I was going to like it. I was so wrong. I am smiling from the beginning to the end (along with hearty bursts of laughter thrown in). I am currently sick with COVID and began watching today feeling really scrappy. Your show didn't heal my COVID but I was definitely feeling better after I watched the episode. You two are so wonderful. Your positive attitudes about your lives mixed in with a deep incite into who you really are. Your ability to accept each other for who you are even though there are distinct differences in your personalities. I love your podcast. Have a wonderful holiday and take a big step into 2024 with all the potential of wonderful possibilities that await you.
I'd love to have a white Christmas with all the gorgeous decorations you guys have. I'm in South Africa and it's so so hot. Our day is spent round the pool if you have one. Some people have what we call a braai you call it a barbeque. We don't have our towns decorated like overseas people do. I'd love to have that just once. I can but dream. 😅😅
I think my Grandmother was the same way with corners. She hated them and always kept Christmas trees up all year long, but changed the decorations to match the season

Todd and my grandson (who is 24 now) are so similar in the innocence of their childhood beliefs. Similar story. One Easter we were all at my parents house. Some of us adults were outside talking about how much longer we thought the kids would believe in the Easter Bunny. We though all the kiddos were watching a movie at the time. Little did we know my grandson who was probably 10 at the time overheard the conversation. He was so upset. Started crying and went back to the guest room and locked the door. He didn't want to talk to any of us. Feeling like absolute crap my sisters and I go back outside on the patio. My sister says "if Ben is this upset over finding out there is no Easter Bunny what's going to happen when he finds out there is no Santa? Well you guessed it. Once again Ben was at the patio door. OMG he was devastated, absolutely heartbroken. And the crying started all over again. Then he stops and looks at us and says "OMG is there no Tooth Fairy either". Needless to say we sucked the joy out of my grandson's life in less than an hour.
Tyler, I have a wee "social battery" also. It can be exhausting being social when not in the mood or tolerance has expired. Then......there are the "energy suckers" at every social gathering who suck everything out of you. You nailed it with the best present is your presence because : read above. My biggest Christmas tradition is watching Christmas Story (usually on a repeating loop) and treating it like The Rocky Horror Picture show…saying my favorite lines of dialogue along with the actors. In so many ways, that story is a fairly accurate representation of my own childhood Christmases, growing up in Indiana. Like most midwesterners, I identify with Ralphie on so many levels. My Red Rider mishap, however, involved me not almost shooting my own eye out but the eye of the stupid older teenager that dared me to shoot a can off his head. I mean come on the guy whipped out the coup de grace and practically triple dog dared me. Poor dumb @ss got grazed along the top of his scalp. I dropped the bb gun and never touched even a toy gun again. So often the scenes feel like flashbacks to my Indiana childhood, like the frenzied unwrapping of gifts that always left a mountain of shredded wrapping paper. My 9 year old self developed an annual post bacchanalia mantra of “we really should get a fireplace next year….then we could just burn all this paper!”. So, now every year that silly low budget movie brings back memories of my own childhood holidays and puts a little magic into my Christmas. In that spirit I offer you an observation of your Christmas tree, “now THAT’S a tree!” 🎄
I surprised my family and most of my friends one year for Christmas. I had been living and working in Korea and so they hadn’t expected to see me. The reactions, especially from my mom and aunts when they saw me was worth travelling across the world that time of year!

I laughed so hard about some of these teas. As for spending Christmas with family: when we got married at 20 and 21, we told our families that Christmas was now for our own family, and not one day at his parents' and the other day at mine. We never had an issue after that. Sometimes we went for coffee at one or the other's on Christmas day and that was that. We created a magical Christmas tradition for our own kids, which they enjoyed tremendously. People, don't let yourself be burdened with the expectations of others.
The best Christmas we had as children was when we as kids said we were tired of traveling to the grandparents (not my mom's mom, we *loved* going to her apt) and we started at that point of being home for Christmas and traveling either before or after. Cut the stress a lot!
Does this mean we gonna talk about watching Harry Potter? Sorry, i think i stole this one from you. My new tradition is watching Harry Potter on Christmas day ❤❤

Happy belated Tyler Day! I grew up in The Netherlands, where we celebrated Sinterklaas and did presents then, but Christmas was to spend time with family. I consider myself a spiritual person; not a religious person. I struggle to understand people who feel justified doing whatever they want (cheating on their spouse on Friday, buying guns to kill on Saturday) as long as they repent on Sunday. Not looking for an explanation. I believe in people, and that's what Christmas is all about for me. Have a wonderful week!

I love hearing about your Christmas experiences! I don't know if you guys already do this or not (and I'm not done watching this video yet) but there are two traditions that I would suggest you start even before you have kids that will be so meaningful for you as time goes on... First, start making/buying a unique Christmas ornament for every year, I would suggest Todd makes/buys one for Tyler, and then vice versa, make sure the year is noted on the ornaments somewhere, and it has something to do with a particular memory from that year whenever possible. When you have kids, make sure that every year they have a unique ornament that somehow reflects them/the family as a whole/a memory from that year. This way, when they grow up and get their own place, they will already have special Christmas ornaments from their youth that they can take with them to decorate their own trees, and hand them down to their children, etc. Another meaningful tradition that a lot of people seem to have stopped doing in recent years, but really does mean a lot if you can get the exchange going, is sending and receiving Christmas cards. It seems kinda archaic now, I guess, but those cards can make such pretty decorations and they can really uplift the spirit when you get them. I love you guys, and hope your holiday season is filled with as much joy as you have given me!
…if you’re alone… I can imagine…seeing that sort of love constantly displayed. We all have bubble fantasies and memories burned from the past. And this year we need to give each other extra consideration. I have been thru ALOT! No one knows what deep thoughts can shake me up.
Because of you I got the peppermint mocha creamer. Delicious! The best Christmas I had was when my dad told me to come home to surprise my mom for Christmas. As I was sneaking in behind her she was saying to my brothers and sister and their families "It is so nice you all are here; if only Gordon was here". And then she turned around. Best surprise ever! That turned out to be her last Christmas.
Wouldn’t it be great if we’d disconnect the label of “Christmas” from all the wonderful lights and decor - we could just call them “Winter Lights” and not take them down after New Year’s Day, but leave them up through the dreariest days of the season. The days are short and so much goes into getting them up. They’re balm for soul, just wonderful to see and feel.
Wow I actually gave found someone who i can relate with. Since I retired I absolutely love, love, love being home. I have worked my entire life even when I was a kid and worked on my parents ranch in the office doing book work to doing accounting. I also worked outside on the ranch, and cleaned house for years in our home. We had a housekeeping but I still had to clean house and vacuum, wash dishes, and other things. I worked outside the ranch but was always available for my parents even when in my late 20s when I began working outside the family. We then had a catering business at the ranch and I worked there on the weekends mid spring to mid fall most weekends lots of family and close friends worked at that. It was hard work but lots of fun due to all of us there together. So now since I retired I really like to be home. My last job at a school district on site and then in the main office an massive overtime for 18 years I was glad to be home. My kids hate that I love to be home. I have to say I am enjoying being a home body and also having my granddaughters after school. That is the best.

This will be the first Christmas without my husband. But I try to remember the reason for the season is to celebrate our good Lord's birthday. And I have no doubt my husband is with him in Heaven. Our tradition of stockings on Christmas eve ( my husband's favorite) will continue. And letting our grandbabies decorate our tree. God Bless and Luv to you both and your furbabies
Todd, regarding Santa, the Christmas season after my then husband told me he wanted a divorce, I took my 3 year old daughter to see Santa at the mall. I was so depressed but this was for her. The mall had several levels with a central court where Santa was. We were 2 levels up, I looked down and Santa looked up at me, our eyes met. His were twinkling and he gave me an encouraging smile. Yes Todd, Santa does exist!

I agree with your thinking about gifting people. I am 71 years old now and when I was young I was much more interested in acquiring “stuff”. Many things have happened in my life to me, and at this point in my life I have all the “stuff” I need. Cards mean a lot more to me than any gift. I have only one son (he’s 37 now) and he has never earned much money. The only gift he has given me was about 5 years ago, he had a professional photo taken of him, bought a frame for it and sent it to his father and I ( were divorced). I, too, rather spend time with him. As a matter of fact, this past Thanksgiving we spent the first Thanksgiving together. We went to a lovely restaurant ( that he picked out) and he paid for his meal and I paid for my own. I am on a limited budget (retirement) and it did work for me to pay for mine and his too. We live for the first time in decades in the same state (4 hours from each other). However, he lives with a roommate in an apartment and there is no place for guests to sleep. So… I stayed in a hotel when I went there for Thanksgiving. Hopefully, he will becoming to my house for Christmas Eve dinner.

I have spent xmas day alone, too. I would wear pjs all day and then in the afternoon, I would think, this is when my family would argue and children needed a nap and instead I was peaceful!😀. Think about the negative aspects of xmas and you’ll be better. It can be a relaxing day, where you can do anything you want. Merry Xmas! It’s just a day.

Loved your story about surprising your family by coming home for Christmas. A family story that is still talked about to this day is when my Uncle Bob was in Vietnam during the war (probably around 1968). He was granted "leave" by the military. Most troops would go to Japan for their time off. But he hitched a ride on a military aircraft (or 2 or 3 flights) to the west coast of the U.S. Then hitch hiked from California across the states to Oklahoma. He walked in the door Christmas morning surprising his mom and the whole family. Sadly, he had to leave just a day or two later to return to Vietnam. Later, he did come home from the war and lived a long life.
That must have been so fantastic for his family! Wonderful story. I'm glad he made it home, after serving his country in the war.

Like you both mentioned, living in northern climate, winter months can be depressing and a major let down following wonderful fall season and cozy holidays. This year, I’m finally breaking that cycle. I’ve pre-purchased two different quilting/sewing projects which will begin mid-January & February. Both projects are pre-paid & I’ll receive monthly kits with new blocks to eventually make a full size bed quilt. As a long time quilter, I really thrive working with my hands. Having two new monthly projects to look forward to is one of the greatest gifts to myself. I recently read a scientific journal article which summarized a long term study which identified that we actually release good endorphins when we works with our hands doing gardening, crafting or related hobbies. I’m sure you two could think of a skill you each enjoy creating something for your home. Merry Christmas 🎄
I’m really enjoying your new adventure moving to your lake front home….its the dream for many of us that love the outdoors and lifestyle of lake living. Here near Lake Tahoe, the Sierra are snow covered but we’ve not yet had snowfall in the valley.

Selfishly - it's our fav part about these. Very rarely do we get to chat, staring into each others eyes for an hour. Whenever we finish a recording we say "ugh, I'm so glad we just did that". I hope that feeling never goes away!
Good morning. Listening to your Christmas memories makes me very nostalgic. My Hollidays were like Todd’s. Christmas Eve after midnight mass, we had a “Revellion”. Family from my dads side came over until the wee hours. My mother would put out a big spread. The next morning ( all tired) we opened our gifts, had a big brunch then went and visited my mothers side of the family. She had a Turkey and a Ham in the oven. Had a big supper. When I had my own family, I looked at my mother and told her she was a super mom. Amazed at the lack of sleep she went through during the holidays and was always smiling and joking. My dad was more quiet. He had a retail business so he worked all the time. Thinking of all this, they are great memories.

There are so many things I could comment on in this video as it seems we are on the same page in most things that were discuss, but what made me chuckle is how I can relate to being told at approximately the same age, about Santa. My brother said to my father, "Isn't it time you had the discussion about Santa with M-J." Poor dad, he looked at me and said, "You have a couple of choices, you can choose to believe or you can choose not to believe." I was the youngest and I could see it was breaking his heart to even bring up this topic. I looked straight into his eyes and said, "I choose to believe." His reaction was a huge hug and he responded by saying, "I do too." I'll never forget it and I, at 71, still believe. I have a intellectually challenged daughter who is 46 and she absolutely still believes. It makes Christmas so special. We decorate our tree on her birthday each year as it is close to Christmas. She loves the eggnog, Christmas shows and the music we play on her special day. I'm actually agnostic, but that doesn't have to make any difference about Santa. I treat Christmas as a time to be with family, if possible. We do exchange gifts (only with our adult children), but that's not what it's all about. It's being together with the people you love and the best gift anyone can give is their time and letting them know that they are important to you. Everyone deserves to feel loved regardless of the time of year, but Christmas should be a reminder of the importance of making sure those sentiments are known.

I love both you guys so much, but Todd, I really relate to you. I used to work in a craft and fabric store, which sold zillions of ornaments. One of my jobs was to decorate trees to merchandise the ornaments. Every year I decorated at least 30 trees a year, each with its own theme. I loved it. Now I’m an older woman, (70), and My son and I have to watch Xmas movies together: White Christmas, It’s a wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th St., A Christmas Carol, The Shop Around the Corner, and the Bishops Wife. I love Christmas!

I totally agree with you about moving away. My husband and I were married about a year after college and we immediately moved away. It was the best adventure! I firmly believe it made our marriage strong. We had to figure things out on our own and rely on each other. We built our lives and traditions on our own blending things from both of our families. 32 years later and we both still think back fondly on that time.

Age 69, still a Santa believer. The cementing miracle was my age 7 Christmas. I cried myself to sleep in front of roaring fireplace, thinking, How will he make it? Woke up, in my bed to find a blue full-size Schwinn bike in front of a cold fireplace. That Christmas Day I learned to ride and celebrated a very clever Santa. Never doubted. Plus, my actual Christmas baby turns 30 on Christmas. Those miracles have never stopped!

I can so relate. I don't like buying or receiving gifts just because it's Christmas. I hate opening a gift and it's obvious that they bought me a gift just because it's expected. I hate opening a gift and then thinking about how much I dislike it.

I love Todd’s viewpoint on the number on the scale and body image. It should never be about what others think, and how we feel is what counts. Not just about how we feel about what our body looks like, but also how we feel (energy, aches, pains, emotions, etc). Others can’t determine if we are healthy just by looking at us. We know if something is off.
You guys gave me such a great idea! Go to thrift stores and get the unwanted ornaments that don’t have a home/tree for Christmas!! The Island of misfit ornaments! Bring them home and put them all on a tree together! They’d all be happy to be on a tree together and totally happy to be in a home again! ❤️💫🎄💫❤️

Since I have grandchildren & children in two different states we split the state every other year. Last year we spent Christmas here at home in Florida. We have 4 children and 5 grandchildren in Florida. This year we will spend Christmas in Ohio. We have 2 children and 6 grandchildren in Ohio. I love being able to split the holidays , birthdays etc accordingly each year. This way my children and grandchildren that live out of state still get that special time! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s podcast! Plus I am lucky enough to work for a company who gives us 2 weeks off for Christmas that’s how all of this is possible!
I didn't grow up into all that traditional stuff, but it really urks me to be forced to be where I don't want to be. I think that it takes away from the 'joy' that I am supposed to have. Everyone is happy, and I am guilted because I am not in their mood. We should remember that we are all unique and, at times, need to be allowed to be myself. Some care and understanding is needed under the circumstance.
Growing up, Christmas for my family was very much like it was for Tyler. My dad was in the British Army and we moved around a lot, so it was always just our family. Later, when I moved to Germany, I had to get used to having a lot of family around (from my mum’s side) and it became more like Todd’s Christmasses, going from one to the other. Here in Germany they celebrate and exchange gifts ob Christmas Eve, but I have to say I miss the coziness of Christmas as I knew it growing up, just waking up on Christmas Day, opening presents in front of the fireplace, a delicious traditional English Christmas dinner.
Like you, I am also not religious, but I do love to decorate for Christmas. It’s just a shame my 57 square-meter flat is too small to put up a tree. Other than that, there are decorations all over and I just love my little Christmas village with lit-up houses.

I put Christmas decorations up in December and don’t take them down till the end of January. Then I decorate with a snowmen theme. It takes away the gloom of the remainder of winter and gets you ready for Spring👼🎄👏🤗🥰

I'm the oldest of 6 kids. My youngest sister was celebrating her & her husband 25th anniversary. So we wanted to surprise her by showing up at her mother in law's anniversary party that she was having. Unfortunately, there was a huge picture window with no curtain on it. She seen me first, then she seen my other 2 sisters & 1 brother. (my youngest brother was already there). She started yelling, that looks like Jody!! Omg Karen & Vicky too & Ed!! Omg!! She came out we started getting huge hugs!! The Best surprise ever!! Considering I live in AR, my other sister lives in Oklahoma, my other sister & brother live in MO.. Such a good surprise!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊
My daughter is 10 and she still believes! I have been telling her that I believe in the magic of the Holidays! The same happened with my oldest and she told me when she was 11 that she knew the truth, lol. 💕💕

As a child with 3 siblings and 2 wonderful parents, the magic would start about a month before with us kids flipping through the Sears christmas catalog together for days and days❤ Christmas Eve we were allowed to open one gift, and it was always new pajamas to snuggle in bed with. The magic was severe at our home. Magic, joy, love, happiness galore. ❤

Why do I enjoy these couch conversations so much? Really the discussion is generally pretty mundane, everyday life or whatever. Probably it is their honesty and definitely their humor. I always listen to the end.
Tyler, I can totally relate to being done when you're done. I'm a low-key, quiet homebody and when I would go home for Christmas I would end up migrating to the family room where the nephews and niece were playing video games to get away from the ever increasing noise of people talking/shouting over each other. I have excitable in-laws. Same at parties. When I've had enough socializing I drift off to the bookcase and get interested in a book in a quiet corner.

Your conversation about Holiday traditions prompts this reply. Since both John and I are in our 70s, are no longer into exchanging gifts (except those of the “experience” type, like a cruise to Ensenada!), and have a relatively small number of family members still alive and living close by, about 10 years ago we decided annually to pick a different country’s cuisine as our gift to each other and our families-Swedish, British, Japanese, French cuisine, etc. Since everyone traditionally meets at our home for Christmas, this year, for example, Portuguese/Spanish cuisine was chosen (Iberian Peninsula?); we are now busy buying paella pans and ingredients, peri peri chicken spices, vinho verde wine (and Tawny Port for dessert), etc. I am the “head chef,” but will gladly accept help from anyone. We have a blast preparing, cooking, and eating a feast every year on Christmas day and have had some very memorable experiences as a result!

December, January and February are my quietest months for work so it’s stressful for that reason ie no money coming in and bills to be paid. I absolutely LOVE Christmas though and this year my Ma and son are coming to share it with us so there’ll be a good amount of joy in the house. I especially hate the idea of housewarming gifts. If you want to decorate your house the way that you want to decorate it, and then people give you things that don’t fit your decor, it’s very awkward.
And if you’re trying to declutter, a bunch of gifts just replace all the things that you were able to get rid of.
I especially feel bad for parents who are struggling financially that children who think that money doesn’t matter to Santa. I agree that time is the best gift.
**** As far as your gift giving conversation.. I stopped buying 'personal' gifts for people... I had so many people swinging by that I finally started buying random gender-esk gifts.. I bought four Giant stockings and wrote Guys, Gals, Boys, Girls on them.. When folks came over they were welcome to pick a gift from whichever they chose. I buy random things throughout the year.. kitchen towels & utensils like spatulas, tongs.. small hammer & screwdrivers, electroc tape( they always, said 'oh I needed some of that tape) .. tape measures, flashlights... candles, sented lotions.. and of course coffee mugs.. some seasonal foods like box of hot chocolate, thin mints.. candy. Hair things and toys, books, coloring books, crayons, activity books.little hats, masks. for kiddos..etc. Nothing over $5... I would wrap them all up and pack then in the appropriate stocking.. THE KIDS LOVED IT MOST.. EVERY YEAR THEY COULDN'T WAIT! and no one ever got outdid (some even got the same gift haha bc I bought multiple of everything) The kids traded gifts.. and were excited to see what each other got.. there were no hard feelings or feeling bad. It turned into a sort of game.. they would feel and shake the packages and then feel and shake another one til they found the perfect one. I never knew how many people would stop by and I made sure I had enough for everyone without stressing out or spending a million dollars.. . I put out some snacking food that I changed out throughout the day so folks could munch away.. then we had laid back dinner whenever it was done and whoever was there at that time could eat if they wanted.. nothing formal, just sit wherever you can find a spot and are comfortable. It was the best way to share gifts without the pressure of finding the perfect gifts or forgetting someone that you didin't know was coming.. and Every Child got a gift even if I didn't know them yet. Everyone still talks about my Christmas Day party.. the memories are all about the time together and being excited. They say it was the best time.. I believe it had everything to do with not stressing over the perfect gifts and anyone getting let down that their gift was not as good as someone elses.. gift giving was a fun and excited suprise for all of us.. and funny how no one cared what it actually was.. We just had fun.. OH My.. how did this comment get so long!! ha.. HAPPY HOLIDAYS GUYS.. xoxoxxo

I still cry remembering how surprised/emotional my mum was when we surprised her for Christmas- is such a special memory especially since she has passed. For the adults for birthdays we all get together on a prearranged date for a meal and good company to celebrate by being together. Kids get gifts lol For Christmas gifts they are opened at our own homes- then we all get together for lovely meal we all chip in with the food and enjoy the company and conversation

Love the Christmas stories. When I was a child we used to have lunch with my mums family (enormous) and dinner with my dads family then the following year we flipped it. My parents were dairy farmers so we would get our santa presents to occupy us first but we had to wait until Dad had come in from milking and had his breakfast to open the gifts under the tree. He was sooo naughty and used to drag his breakfast out, read the newspaper from the day before etc until we were really desperate. It was always such a happy time for us. My Christmas is so quiet now. I have 2 adult sons and one grand daughter so I usually have my younger son and his wife come over for breakfast then in the afternoon I spend it with my older son, his partner and my very precious 2 year old grand daughter. Its summer here for Christmas but I did live in the UK for a couple of Christmas and it definitely felt right to have a Winter Christmas after a lifetime of hot Christmas. Tyler, we are almost twinning on the birthday front. Mine is on the 12th Dec!

I love your channel! I’m soon to be 75 and a few years ago got my 3 grown children and their spouses to agree to no gifts at Christmas except for the grandkids. We are all adults so I feel we can buy what we want so why have others spending time and money for something we may not want or need and then have to return.
Our family all (including my ex and his current wife) get together for meals, games, drinking and conversation. You two have it all figured out. Sending you love and hugs. ❤️🤗❤️

I'd love to have a white Christmas with all the gorgeous decorations you guys have. I'm in South Africa and it's so so hot. Our day is spent round the pool if you have one. Some people have what we call a braai you call it a barbeque. We don't have our towns decorated like overseas people do. I'd love to have that just once. I can but dream. 😅😅
I think my Grandmother was the same way with corners. She hated them and always kept Christmas trees up all year long, but changed the decorations to match the season

Todd and my grandson (who is 24 now) are so similar in the innocence of their childhood beliefs. Similar story. One Easter we were all at my parents house. Some of us adults were outside talking about how much longer we thought the kids would believe in the Easter Bunny. We though all the kiddos were watching a movie at the time. Little did we know my grandson who was probably 10 at the time overheard the conversation. He was so upset. Started crying and went back to the guest room and locked the door. He didn't want to talk to any of us. Feeling like absolute crap my sisters and I go back outside on the patio. My sister says "if Ben is this upset over finding out there is no Easter Bunny what's going to happen when he finds out there is no Santa? Well you guessed it. Once again Ben was at the patio door. OMG he was devastated, absolutely heartbroken. And the crying started all over again. Then he stops and looks at us and says "OMG is there no Tooth Fairy either". Needless to say we sucked the joy out of my grandson's life in less than an hour.

My biggest Christmas tradition is watching Christmas Story (usually on a repeating loop) and treating it like The Rocky Horror Picture show…saying my favorite lines of dialogue along with the actors. In so many ways, that story is a fairly accurate representation of my own childhood Christmases, growing up in Indiana. Like most midwesterners, I identify with Ralphie on so many levels. My Red Rider mishap, however, involved me not almost shooting my own eye out but the eye of the stupid older teenager that dared me to shoot a can off his head. I mean come on the guy whipped out the coup de grace and practically triple dog dared me. Poor dumb @ss got grazed along the top of his scalp. I dropped the bb gun and never touched even a toy gun again. So often the scenes feel like flashbacks to my Indiana childhood, like the frenzied unwrapping of gifts that always left a mountain of shredded wrapping paper. My 9 year old self developed an annual post bacchanalia mantra of “we really should get a fireplace next year….then we could just burn all this paper!”. So, now every year that silly low budget movie brings back memories of my own childhood holidays and puts a little magic into my Christmas. In that spirit I offer you an observation of your Christmas tree, “now THAT’S a tree!” 🎄
I surprised my family and most of my friends one year for Christmas. I had been living and working in Korea and so they hadn’t expected to see me. The reactions, especially from my mom and aunts when they saw me was worth travelling across the world that time of year!

I laughed so hard about some of these teas. As for spending Christmas with family: when we got married at 20 and 21, we told our families that Christmas was now for our own family, and not one day at his parents' and the other day at mine. We never had an issue after that. Sometimes we went for coffee at one or the other's on Christmas day and that was that. We created a magical Christmas tradition for our own kids, which they enjoyed tremendously. People, don't let yourself be burdened with the expectations of others.

The best Christmas we had as children was when we as kids said we were tired of traveling to the grandparents (not my mom's mom, we *loved* going to her apt) and we started at that point of being home for Christmas and traveling either before or after. Cut the stress a lot!

Happy belated Tyler Day! I grew up in The Netherlands, where we celebrated Sinterklaas and did presents then, but Christmas was to spend time with family. I consider myself a spiritual person; not a religious person. I struggle to understand people who feel justified doing whatever they want (cheating on their spouse on Friday, buying guns to kill on Saturday) as long as they repent on Sunday. Not looking for an explanation. I believe in people, and that's what Christmas is all about for me. Have a wonderful week!
My late partner, loved Christmas. It’s not been the same since he died nearly 14 years ago now. He loved it because of the presents. He was a bugger to buy presents for.

I love hearing about your Christmas experiences! I don't know if you guys already do this or not (and I'm not done watching this video yet) but there are two traditions that I would suggest you start even before you have kids that will be so meaningful for you as time goes on... First, start making/buying a unique Christmas ornament for every year, I would suggest Todd makes/buys one for Tyler, and then vice versa, make sure the year is noted on the ornaments somewhere, and it has something to do with a particular memory from that year whenever possible.
When you have kids, make sure that every year they have a unique ornament that somehow reflects them/the family as a whole/a memory from that year. This way, when they grow up and get their own place, they will already have special Christmas ornaments from their youth that they can take with them to decorate their own trees, and hand them down to their children, etc.
Another meaningful tradition that a lot of people seem to have stopped doing in recent years, but really does mean a lot if you can get the exchange going, is sending and receiving Christmas cards. It seems kinda archaic now, I guess, but those cards can make such pretty decorations and they can really uplift the spirit when you get them.

Because of you I got the peppermint mocha creamer. Delicious! The best Christmas I had was when my dad told me to come home to surprise my mom for Christmas. As I was sneaking in behind her she was saying to my brothers and sister and their families "It is so nice you all are here; if only Gordon was here". And then she turned around. Best surprise ever! That turned out to be her last Christmas.

Wouldn’t it be great if we’d disconnect the label of “Christmas” from all the wonderful lights and decor - we could just call them “Winter Lights” and not take them down after New Year’s Day, but leave them up through the dreariest days of the season. The days are short and so much goes into getting them up. They’re balm for soul, just wonderful to see and feel.
I love the old style Christmas trees with the glass ornaments, garland and tinsel. Brings back memories of my childhood.

Wow I actually gave found someone who i can relate with. Since I retired I absolutely love, love, love being home. I have worked my entire life even when I was a kid and worked on my parents ranch in the office doing book work to doing accounting. I also worked outside on the ranch, and cleaned house for years in our home. We had a housekeeping but I still had to clean house and vacuum, wash dishes, and other things. I worked outside the ranch but was always available for my parents even when in my late 20s when I began working outside the family. We then had a catering business at the ranch and I worked there on the weekends mid spring to mid fall most weekends lots of family and close friends worked at that. It was hard work but lots of fun due to all of us there together. So now since I retired I really like to be home. My last job at a school district on site and then in the main office an massive overtime for 18 years I was glad to be home. My kids hate that I love to be home. I have to say I am enjoying being a home body and also having my granddaughters after school. That is the best.
