    I had removed southbridge on PS4, and I had those grey pads too. I tried to reball but the solder wouldn't stick to it... So i guess it was some sort of damaged or missing pads

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can usually bring back those pads with my small, low-wattage iron. It's one of those USB-C powered pen irons like Northridge fix sells. I've been able to load the tip with fresh solder with lots of flux and get them to be shiny again. If I use my large iron, it tends to remove the pad from the chip.

    • @Sonic2903
      @Sonic2903 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToltecMerc well, you're definitely on another level! I'll try to look for a Small low-wattage iron, but even with that, I'm pretty confident I'll still mess everything up ahah

    Hi there, i really appreciate your videous and the way you repair those PS5. Keep it going and thumbs up for that. I also have one little question. I have a PS5(board EDM-010) and i found one mosfet shorted( 38168 ), it is located on the other side of the APU's power coils. On the output coil of that mosfet i have 3.4ohms to GND. Is that a normal value? Thanks in advance 😊

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is normal to read low resistance in that area. To know for sure, lift one side of the large coils. That will isolate the MOSFETS from each other and the APU.

    • @lwcyan88
      @lwcyan88 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  ปีที่แล้ว

    Just an idea here if you run into this issue again - try pressing the controller around the edges while power on with the bench psu and see if there's any change.Could confirm/exclude problems with solder balls and the chip itself.

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  ปีที่แล้ว

      I changed one of those just a few days ago. It didn’t fix my problem but it was rather easy. Not so many solder balls as some other ICs.

    • @thetechdoc792
      @thetechdoc792 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToltecMercalso, in my ventures of figuring the cache chip was bad (total short) someone else told me the reason the PS5 does the beep and no light is because the SSD controller is the first thing checked during initial power up. Causing your up to 200mA and immediate drop back to 0

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thetechdoc792 I believe you are correct. The SSD is one of the first things tested when 12V is applied. If it is not working, the initial current draw will not be correct.

    Nice fix again. I have just ordered the same preheater. I see you put the thermocouple beneath the board. Do you position it under the chip to be removed? How high do you heat the board at this point before applying hot air from the top? Thank you in advance.

    • @ToltecMerc
      @ToltecMerc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thermal probe is simply in a hole in the board where it can directly contact copper. I have not found a way to attach the probe directly under the South Bridge. Tape won't hold due to the heat. I start my preheater at around 120C and slowly increase the temp up to 220C. I do it over like 20 minutes. I will wait for my temperature probe to indicate a board temp around 100-110C and then I will use hot air around 350-360C from above, with flux of course.

    • @kikihobbyrepair
      @kikihobbyrepair ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToltecMerc thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. I see others putting the thermal probe on top of the PCB close to the chip to be removed and dropping a little bit of flux on it to have a better heat conduction. I am jsut thinking which way is better.

    I have similar problem but mine is stuck at PS Logo then black screen. Takes about a minute or so to shut down. I can get into Safe Mode. Reset, Update, Reset PS5, Default settings BUT can't change resolution, rebuild database, clear cache. If i sit at Safe Mode, it stays on forever. Never hangs there but If i try the latter ones, it hangs again (resolution change, rebuild database, clearc cache make it hang). Usually blue light but very rarely get to white light phase. I have been focusing on SSD Controller for a while. Do you have any opinion? I can send its video too if you want.
