  • Paul McCartney reveals his complicated and heartbreaking relationship with John Lennon after the Beatles breakup. John Lennon and Paul McCartney are considered the greatest songwriting partnership of all time. As of 2004 they sold over 600 million records worldwide making them the most successful to date. Yet the events leading up to the breakup, the legal matters to dissolve the Beatles, and the public nastiness after the breakup created a rift between the duo that seemed irreparable. So after all the dust settled, how did their relationship end before John’s untimely death in 1980?

The Beatles were at a loss after their manager, Brian Epstein died in August of 1967. I believe he left a power void that Klein and John tried to fill. I am impressed that Paul rose above the comments in "How do you Sleep", and later be the first to reach out to rekindle his friendship with John. The beautiful part is that they became buddies again, talking about baking bread. Love and respect to both Paul and John.

Paul wrote “Dear Friend” in response to “How Do You Sleep” on his “Wildlife” album. it wasn’t even nasty:
      Dear friend, what's the time?
      Is this really the borderline?
Does it really mean so much to you?
Are you afraid, or is it true?
      Dear friend, throw the wine
I'm in love with a friend of mine
Really truly, young and newly wed
Are you a fool, or is it true?
Are you afraid, or is it true?
      Dear friend, what's the time?
      Is this really the borderline?
Does it really mean so much to you?

I agree with you 1000% percent. There are tens of thousands of people who are more skilled with a guitar than John was. But not a single one of them has come up with the riffs that John came up with. If he could only play well enough to play the stuff he wrote--if that were true--John is still great with a guitar. Like Clapton might be more skilled, but
Clapton hasn't come up with anything near what John came up with. I don't think we would ever have had any questions about John's guitar playing if he had not brought it up. Anybody would answer this question the same way: Had you rather play like Clapton or play like John and come up with stuff like John came up with?- The purpose of a guitar is not to show off with it. One last thing: John was not a lousy player. Ringo's skill with drums is more questionable than John with a guitar. I don't think Ringo's skills are a matter to question. George is not Ginger Baker and John is not Eric Clapton, but what both did is 10x what Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton did.

As some have already noted, Ram was not Paul's first album. It preceded Imagine and John even included a photo with that record of him holding the ears of a pig in a mocking fashion to Paul's Ram album cover. John was pissed over Too Many People so he struck back with How do you Sleep. The thing is, later, in typical John-under-the-influence-of-the-woman-whose-name-shall-not-be-uttered-here fashion, he said looking back on it he was really writing about himself. I say he got that take from his woman because it is the type of narcissistic comment she would come up with. It's sad that they had such a rough time of it after the breakup but at least May got the two of them talking again. I am convinced John and Paul would have done something in the 80s had John not been killed. Cynthia and John's sister Julia both have alluded to John being fed up with that other woman and her heroin addiction and sleeping around and that he was going to tell her to take a hike once and for all. Yeah, it might be a bit self-serving, but hey, a guy can dream can't he. That would have been my version of a happier ending to the story.

He had to sue her to get a tiny bit of John's fortune when he was killed. If I remember correctly, she didn't even want him at John's funeral! I don't care if she hated his guts, that was his FATHER who was murdered! She is a psychopath IMO.

The problem was John loved loved loved Yoko and she had him convinced she was a musician. In a sense, she was. She was a terrible musician. They called it avant garde, but it was actually indigestible and even annoying and cringe. He couldn't hear that because he was crazy about her and he was bored with writing rock and pop music. Paul and the rest of the band were right: She had no place in the studio. So John had to go to follow his heart. And in the end, all the rumors were right. Yoko broke up The Beatles.

Paul McCartney was, and still is, a musical genius. A natural musician that can accomplish anything he puts his mind to. I think that Lennon was the wordsmith and McCartney the composer in their relationship. This is evident in the lyrics that McCartney writes for Wings; the music is great but the lyrics seem something like an afterthought that are often not convincing. Lennon, on the other hand, used lyrics to great effect and they tell a narrative on contemporary life.

After Brian died, John said "Paul took over" That was a problem. It was John's band. I suppose John resented Paul taking over leadership of the band. I read some years ago that Yoko said It was always John's band. When Paul took over, John lost interest. I believe it was Mick Jagger that warned Paul about Klein, stay way from him. I also believe that Klein wanted 25 percent commission of the Beatles. Paul wasn't willing to give away that kind of money to Klein so he Quit.

At the end of the day, it all went down, the way it was meant to be. But, really, can you imagine if you insisted on bringing your wife to work, every day, just to hang around. How about if everyone brought their spouse to work, just to hang around, ... all day, everyday?? How about if Maureen, Patti, and Linda came to the studio everyday and just hung around all the time? It would be weird in any scenario.

What with you mentioning that Paul was brought up to be stoic, and that by his own admission and his early experience with grief and death, I now more readily understand why he made that unfortunate ‘drag’ observation to the assembled, baying and braying press pack.
Although it sounded a bit bored and casual, he just hadn’t had the chance to process the information that his best friend had been murdered, even if they had had a fraught, terse and bickering break up.
People were demanding to hear his thoughts and opinions but that hunt for the story showed a complete disregard for his privacy and took away the time and space for him to grieve in. Added to that, although I already knew who the Beatles were and a lot of their songs, I was still young and didn’t really understand death and grief myself as I was yet to become acquainted with it.
Even if Paul had a responsibility to convey something to the multitude of fans, and I know that he understood that, the media were also obliged to show some deference and courtesy but some of them failed to fulfil their end of the bargain. I think Paul realised that and I sometimes wonder if maybe the drag quote was a bit of subconscious contempt for them and their lack of empathy.

George said in an interview that it was a job to go to Abbey Road studio and he was tired of being FAB. MAYBE, it was because of Billy. They DID make a lot of money though, with Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, the White album and Let it Be. So, when they split, they were ALL extremely wealthy. Lennon said that Brian Epstein robbed them contractually ,but were devastated when HE died. Complicated? It seems the music industry is just that.

McCartney's style didn't change much. On Revolver when John and George were drastically changing styles, McCartney kept writing his same style of songs. His playing style stayed the same too. He had a particular way of finger picking his guitar, and that hasn't changed. The fingerprint thing in Japan never happened. It's just made up. Paul is incredibly talented, but became narcissistic. He caused George to want to leave te Beatles, as was well documented in the Get Back sessions, he drove Ringo away, and he is currently working to re-write history with so many songs John created claiming credit for works beyond his contributions. John had his faults, but it doesn't take much to see the monster Paul became in the later years of the Beatles. He missed the point John made when he sang the only thing you done was Yesterday, his F you to John highlights the narcissism that is on full display to this day. Talented, but so extremely flawed by his own demons. Had he not teamed up with Lennon, given his early work, it would never have achieved the heights that they did together. His later works, while still very good, was not to the level of the Beatles collaborations. Longevity and John's murder has given him a place where he now says all kinds of things where he is taking credit knowing John is not here to give the "rest of the story".
