I can’t believe that people would actually act so childish, throwing things at Bob Dylan and his band because he moved on that’s what artist do do you want them to get stuck in one place music is free and it’s very spiritual to the soul so why would anyone want somebody to get stuck? Grow the fuck up and let people entertain us do what they do for us and if you don’t like it, walk the other way and shut the hell up let them do what they wanna do is more people in this world and just you and your thoughts don’t get stuck man move on just like musicians. Do you know you forget their people they grow up and move on to hire things and that’s what Dylan did.?

I can’t believe they never mentioned either the civil rights or antiwar movements or the draft for Vietnam. The transition to the hippies came after those. Especially the failure of ending that war over time. There was no direct beat to hippie transition. Also the use of drugs by kids sent to Nam changed everything. It seemed like one day most HS boys were in ROTC with crew cuts. Then Beatles mops.

Robbie Robertson's Autobiography tells it like it was. They were far from over the hill and the hardest was yet to come. Alcohol and serious heroin habits in the band crept up at every turn in Woodstock. Both Danko and Manuel got in car crashes. Van Morrison's notorious drinking was not a good influence in the mix either as him and Manuel were buddies. It was a roller coaster ride and got pretty bleak trying to keep things going and the Band together.

60's, I dressed in surplus bells and pea coats like the drunks in Washington Sq. Young Lords and Black Panthers. Monk and Allen Ginsburg. What does pop music and the Stones stupidly getting the sociopathic Angels to do security for a concert do with ethical culture or political consciousness. And I've had the Angels set their dogs on me. Joplin died of an overdose and Hendricks was given a sedative that he reacted to then was left in an E.R. hall to choke to death, then Morrison's heart gave out because he was a coker, so what. He didn't deserve to be buried next to Modigliani. We used Psychedelics as a meditation tool, not party drug. I went to Fed lockup because of it and would do it again but for I have already reached as much enlightenment as I am capable in this short existence. But it was enough to kill my ego and desire for materialist things.

Like any hypocritical moron with a "Oh, How Quaint!" surface level interest in profound subjects and illusions of grandeur; they got bored. "Dharma Bums" is a perfect example of this with Kerouac's understanding of Buddahism is just climbing up a peak of a mountain to cross your legs and close your eyes.

I was born in NY in '72 but grew up in North Jersey - as a 17 yr old musician I found the music of Dylan and it changed my life...I was obsessed with the whole Greenwich Village folk history and ended up living there for short time in '88 but it was not anything like I had hoped it would still be - it was dirty and dangerous as the 80's crack epidemic had reached it's zenith at that point, especially in NY...my heart still belongs to the history of art and music that once thrived there...funny how as people we become so nostalgic for certain periods in history that seem more and more magical as time goes by...the village folk scene of the 60's was magical and will never be repeated again...maybe there will eventually be another explosion of talent and art, but it seems like a bleak prospect when hearing and seeing just how far music has currently fallen from what it once was...sad, actually.

That “recovery” was also a detox, no? There’s a funny way how every story of Dylan and the Band avoids some details that might give a much fuller and richer picture. For instance, most accounts of Big Pink neglect to mention Dylan was paying them to be there. I’ve always wondered how much.

The “beatniks” as you so ignorantly call them, despised that name. Beatnik was a name coined by Herb Caen, a San Francisco newspaper columnist in the late 1950’s. It was based on the word Sputnik, the Russian word for satellite. It was a derogatory reference to the Beats. A typical right wing paranoid reaction to what they feared. You look up the definition of Beat, in the context of the “Beat Generation.” I’m sure it will enlighten you. This is just another case of an internet expert who doesn’t really know jack shit, let alone Jack Kerouac.
