Madam if after mbbs I did pg 3 year ms in orthopedic surgery in my country and gave mrcs during ms. After that can i just give frcs and become an consultant orthopedic surgeon in uk. Or do I need uk training again in orthopedic surgery to give frcs. And become a consultant.
Hi Dr. Lavnya, do those interested in anaesthesia also need to take MRCP or any of those exams you mentioned? Or does anaesthesia have their own separate exam? Thanks very much
Cardiothoracic surgical training is normally around 8 years. Do check out this video on How to become a surgeon in the UK th-cam.com/video/w5QT9Olfmk8/w-d-xo.html
Do check out this video on MRCP vs PLAB th-cam.com/video/bsrFF9brfHA/w-d-xo.html It depends on how much clinical experience you have. if you have graduated outside the UK/EU you need to take the PLAB or one of the UK specialty exam like MRCP/MRCS/MRCOG/MRCPCH etc to obtain GMC registration. PLAB will be suitable for newly qualified doctors. The UK specialty exams will be suitable for more senior doctors.
Hi mam, really appreciate your work to help medicos..... I'm currently doing my 3rd year residency in India as a title of DNB(general surgery), i would like to pursue my surgical speciality training in UK. My doubt here is, should i take MRCS or FRCS? OR can i take the MRCS training and directly enter into specialty training?OR can i do MRCS then FRCS? Is it doable? Can you please suggest me..!!! Thank you mam
Hi, what higher surgical specialty do you want to pursue? Are you planning to practice in the UK as a surgical consultant? Normally doctors in UK after FY2/internship, do core surgical training CST (2 years). During this time they take the MRCS. After that, they apply for higher surgical specialty training in a paticular surgical field eg plastics, urology, vascular, ent, general surgery etc. During the higher surgical specialty training doctors take the FRCS. After that, you become a surgical consultant. To apply for higher surgical specialty training, you will need MRCS and complete core surgical training (or equivalent).
i want to pursue surgical speciality in urology. yes mam i am planning to practice in UK as a consultant. but my indian degree( DNB general surgery) is valid in UK or it will count a s an experience? so first, for what i have to prepare?
@@hirenpatoliya99 Hi, yes it will count. There are a number of route options. You could do the MRCS and register with the GMC. After that, apply for trust grade surgical jobs here. After working here for 6 months in surgery, apply for higher surgical specialty training in urology (5 years). I would suggest to do a trust grade post before applying for higher surgical training, so that you can get used to the system here and gain UK experience as well as prepare for the application and interview.

You can find more information about the CESR route here www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/registration-applications/specialty-specific-guidance-for-cesr-and-cegpr

FRCS is the exam. Doctors normally do FRCS while doing higher surgical specialty training (5 years). All specilaty training in UK is free. You will receive a monthly salary enough to support your living here.

Hello Lavnya, I am a practising opthalmologist in India for the past 9 years..i have cleared by FRCS(opthal) GLASGOW in 2012..how can i proceed from now on if i wish to work in the UK?
After obtaining GMC registration (you can use FRCS opthal), apply for opthalmology fellowship jobs in the UK. You can find jobs on NHS jobs www.jobs.nhs.uk or use a recruitment agency. bdiresourcing.com . You can normally secure a job faster using a recruitment agency.
Hello Dr, I’ll finish my medical specialty in ophthalmology in two years in Argentina. Here in latin america usually lasts 3 years. Should I write the frcs or mrcs? I still don’t fully understand the pathway I have to follow :( please help me clarifying it.
Hello , i have tow questions : 1- what can i benefit of MRCS only ? beside FRCS training ? 2- does FRCS Qualification apply in South Africa or Australia ? or just in UK and ireland . thank you for the video
Hi, most surgeons do MRCS and FRCS in order to become a consultant in UK. I am not sure if the qualification is recognised in other countries. I have only worked in UK.
Hello, kindly suggest something about opthalmology. I passed a 2 year post graduate diploma in opthalmology (DOMS) from India last year and now working as an opthalmologist in a private hospital. Still working on my surgical skills. Been getting a lot of discouraging comments on various posts regarding how impossible it is to enter into opthalmology speciality training in UK as it is highly competitive. I know it is, but can you guide me how to proceed further? I am appearing for PLAB in March this year. What all other routes can I explore? N yes, I want to work as a specialist consultant in UK someday.
Hi, thank you. Yes, opthalmology is competitive but possible if you have a good cv/portfolio and do well in the interview. After PLAB, apply for a non-training trust grade post here in UK (FY2/SHO) (6-12 months). You can use this time to prepare your application and gain NHS experience. After that, apply for opthalmology specialty training (7 years).
I think you shud check the FRCS website for this one.. you ll find their eligibility criteria. Most probably you won't be able to directly take the exit exam. You ll have to pursue your fellowship course in uk

Hi Lavnya, Would FRCP be recognized as "specialist" status in the UK? and do most UK consultants possess FRCP qualifications? Besides, any difference in the 3 colleges namely Lond, Edin and Glas in fellowship recognition?
Hi, most doctors who are awarded the FRCP are already a consultant/specialist. It is more like an accolade given to distinguished consultants or specialty doctors. No most new consultants do not have FRCP. I don't think there is much difference in the colleges.
hi . I am an post-graduate in general surgery. I wish to do Cardiothoracic or plastic surgery as my supersepciality and would like to settle in UK . what exam should I take .. MRCS OR FRCS ? if I am taking MRCS can I work as a surgeon in UK
Best to take MRCS first. FRCS is normally done during higher surgical training. Yes, after MRCS, you can apply for GMC registration (How to apply for GMC registration - th-cam.com/video/6dBcaV9_c8E/w-d-xo.html ) and apply for surgical jobs in the UK.

Can I still apply for an or post grad MSc in medicine? As you can tell, I’m very new to my journey. I appreciate this will take years, but I’d like to know if I stand a chance. Thanks in advance ❤️
I am not sure about the MSc courses. UK doctors don't normally do PG degree/masters/MD to specialise and become a consultant. We do the specialty training programme to specialise.
Not really. It depends on the specialty. Some specialties are more competitive than others. Do check out my video on the competitive ratio for specialties. th-cam.com/video/fAftIp8z20E/w-d-xo.html
Hi Maam, thank you for the video. I had the following questions- 1) is MRCS/FRCS exams a pass or fail exam or they are scored? 2) is the process to enter a clinical specialty similar to how one applies for foundation programe as a final year medicine student?

Hi Doctor! I was wondering if once you pass MRCs do you have to specialise in a particular surgical field or can you just practice general surgery after MRCs? Also, if I do MRCs in UK and go back to India will I be able to practice there as a surgeon or will I have to specialise further? Many thanks!😊
Hi, MRCS is normally done during core surgical training (CST) (2 years). After CST and MRCS, most doctors apply for higher surgical training - eg general surgery, ENT, vascular, plastics, urology (6-7 years). During higher surgical training, doctors take the FRCS. After that, you will become a surgical consultant. This is the route in the UK to become a surgical consultant. I am not sure about the pathway overseas.
Follow the standard pathway (see all the other questions) to become a medical consultant in the UK. Publish lots of research during your training so that your consultancy will be in a teaching hospital and you will also be appointed as a Senior Lecturer. Teach, carry on publishing your research and apply for grants to supervise a research team. Also try to do a PhD during your higher specialist training or by taking time out from the programme as a research fellow.

Hi, you have to meet the GMC English requirements in order to register and work here. Yes, you will need MRCP to apply to any of the medical specialties. It is best to start as a trust grade/clinical fellow job before applying for specialty training in rheumatology.

After FY2, you can apply for specialty training in your desired field (medical or surgery). Do check out this video Specialty Training (Residency) in UK? th-cam.com/video/6hFJgU-psEE/w-d-xo.html
I think you need to complete all parts of MRCP to get full GMC registration. Unless you go via the MTI route. Then you can work here with part 1. More on MTI here th-cam.com/video/Uv_NGalKLY8/w-d-xo.html
if i work as medical officer(immediately after mbbs) in my country(Nepal) for 3 years under a internal medicine specialist, will i be qualified to appear in MRCP exam of internal medicine and work as consultant thereafter
@@ajthapa47 Yes, i think you can take the MRCP to obtain GMC registation. However, to work in UK as a consultant, you will need to do specialty training in the UK. Pathway to be a medical consultant in the UK-After MBBS and internship, apply for internal medicine training (IMT) (2-3 years). During IMT, take MRCP. After IMT and MRCP, apply for higher specialty training in your desired medical specialty eg cardiology, respiratory, acute medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, renal medicine, haematology etc. (4-5 years). You can apply for higher specialty training in acute medicine or general medicine if none of the other specialties appeal to you. You can skip internal medicine training (IMT), if you have done something similar and can demonstrate that you have gained all the competencies and experience of an IMT doctor.
Can you please inform me how to select which place to choose and which university or college after internship for core training in surgery ? Do we have choice or they will select for us?
Hi, in the UK, specialty training is conducted by health education england. It is not run by a university/college. After FY2, you can apply for core surgical training. The application is centralised. You will be able to rank your choices of where you want to work on the application.

You should be able to find the eligibility requirements from the specialty recruitment website here. www.st3recruitment.org.uk. Question 3: after completing my MS (master of surgery) and MRCS how should i apply for GMC registration? Thank you in advance
Hi, I am not very familiar with the MCh programme. Most doctors (UK and IMGs), do not do specialisation via a university. We do athe specialty training programme conducted via health education England. It is not a masters or MD. But that is what UK doctors do to specialise and become a consultant. So, I can't really advise on the MCh route as I do not have any experience on it. If you want to work and settle in UK, it is best to do what uk doctors do. Usual pathway for IMGs : After MRCS, apply for GMC registration (apply on the GMC website). After GMC registration, apply for non-training jobs here in UK (for 6-12 months), to gain NHS experience. After that, apply for higher specialty training in urology (4 years).

Hi, thank you. Surgery is not my field but I will share what i know. Most doctors here after internship FY2, do core surgical training (2 years). During this time they take the MRCS. After that, they apply for higher specialty training in a particular field ie vascular, general surgery, plastics, urology etc. (5 years). During this they take the FRCS. After that you are a consultant. FRCS is an exam (it is open to all doctors). Higher specialty training is competitive but possible for IMGs if you are commited and have a good cv. if you manage to enter higher specialty training, you have an equal opportunity to gain hands on experience and theatre time as local trainees. Hi, no. Mrcp is only for the medical specialties. There are other exams for anaesthetics.
What is the duration of MRCP, MRCS, FRCS course for cardiac surgery?
Cardiothoracic surgical training is normally around 8 years. Do check out this video on How to become a surgeon in the UK th-cam.com/video/w5QT9Olfmk8/w-d-xo.html
And what is time period to do MRCP and back to India .. is MRCP done without PLAB
Do check out this video on MRCP vs PLAB th-cam.com/video/bsrFF9brfHA/w-d-xo.html
It depends on how much clinical experience you have. if you have graduated outside the UK/EU you need to take the PLAB or one of the UK specialty exam like MRCP/MRCS/MRCOG/MRCPCH etc to obtain GMC registration.

Ok so can you enquire about MCh program after MRCS and GMC registration if possible.

I can't really coment on how beneficial doing an MCH will be as surgery is not my field. But i guess it will improve your cv.

How about residency in UK? Is it done after MRCP? Is it free of fees?
Specialty training (residency) is free in UK. MRCP is only needed for the medical specialties. Other specialties like surgery, paediatrics etc do not require MRCP.
hi im medical student completing my final year, i want to ask a question about specialty training if IMG could get a specialty other than GP or psychiatry ???
Hi, after FY2, IMGs can apply to any specialty programme.
Hi, since the competition is too fierce for applying to specialty training post betwwen the UK med student , the specialty post that are left are either GP or psychiatry ,so while going to interviews for applying to specialty training post what do wa have to add to our documents so we can be chosen instead of the other applicant?
@@hadigaming5078 Hi, IMGs do get into competitive specialties. As long as you have a good CV/portfolio and do well in the interview you will get in. Try and do audits/quality improvement projects/papers/posters/courses/presentations related to the specialty you want to pursue. This will show your commitment to the specialty.

MRCP is not a degree. UK doctors don't normally do MD/masters/degree to specialise. We do the specialty training programme. What specialty do you want to do?
@@lavnya70 cardiology
@@ahemadakbani9983 After MBBS, internship and PLAB, apply for FY2 jobs here. After FY2 (1 year), apply for internal medicine training (IMT) (3 years). During IMT, take MRCP. After IMT and MRCP, apply for cardiology specialty training (4 years).

@@ahemadakbani9983 There might be. But i am not sure about that route. It is not what uk doctors do.
Hi! After passing mrcp, how do we choose or get selected to whichever area of specialty we want to specialize in? :)
Hi, you have to decide on which medical specialty you want to pursue. Then, apply to the respected specialty. In the UK, you can apply to as many specialties as you wish. Most people apply to 1-3 specialties. But do remember that your CV and portfolio needs to be targeted to the specialty you are applying to.
@@lavnya70 thanks for replying! And what do you mean by cv being targeted to the specialty? For example if i want to specialize in say otohinolaryngology or plastic surgery what do i need? And sorry to bother you with so many questions, how long does it take to finish the specialty? Thanks in advance.
@@randomviralfeed Hi, you do not need MRCP to specialise in plastics or any of the surgical specialties. PLAB will be enough. After PLAB, apply for core surgical training (2 years). In that 2 years you need to complete the MRCS. Then apply for higher surgical specialty training (plastics, ENT, T&O, cardiothoracics etc). The higher surgical specialty training is normally for 5-6 years. During the 5-6 years, you need to complete the FRCS in the respected specialty.

Yeah, MRCS is for surgery. No need to do MRCP. Entering specialty training in UK is not based on scores. It is based on your CV/portfolio and interview performance. Do check out this video on the competition ratio for specialty training th-cam.com/video/fAftIp8z20E/w-d-xo.html
I am a 4th year international medical student and i would like to start preparing for MRCP from now on.. so i have 2 questions.. which is the most highly paid surgical field in UK ? And how do i know if my university graduation is eligible to apply for MRCP?
Hi, what specialty do you want to do? MRCP is not needed for the surgical specialties.
MRCP is only necessary to enter the higher medical specialties like gastroenterology, dermatology, cardiology, neurology, renal medicine, respiratory etc.
MRCS is needed for the surgical specialties like general surgery, vascular surgery, orthopaedics, urology, plastic surgery, ent etc.
