Man I've been buying a crap ton of PS1/PS2 game's lately, honestly I don't care if the graphics are bad. I love that nostalgic feeling when playing an old game. I've addicted to The Godfather and Mafia for the PS2.
The PS1 Slim and PS2 Slim are my favorite consoles purely from an aesthetic standpoint. Love both systems. Got my PS1 in 1999 for my birthday with Crash 1, Tomb Raider, and Rayman. Loved it, it's one of my favorite systems and the PS2 greatly improved on it, but I never got one for myself until I got a job and most of my collection is games I either wanted to play but never got the chance to or ones that my cousin owned
Recently rebought the PSone (slim version), which is the one I grew up playing. And oh boy, that start up screen, nothing else can ever top it. But, I agree that playing games on their original hardware is the way to go, even if they do look worse than playing them on a PS3. Can’t deny, that PlayStation came out swinging and cornered both Nintendo and Sega. A legend indeed.
Honestly, this brings back memories of when my best friend used to own a PS1 back in the day. If it wasn't for the PS1, I wouldn't have had a PS2 growing up.
I've been binging your videos, 32 years old and definitely in my retro game collecting phase lol. PS1 & PS2 are my latest pick ups. Found your channel at the perfect time, thanks for the entertainment 🙏 would be cool to see you venture into other consoles, such as gamecube through wii u or something. Im here for it either way tho!
i grew up with the ps1 because my dad bought a bunch of the games when they were discounted in the early 2000s and they are all pretty good i have test drive 5 and siphon filter 1 those games are great, i also have ff7 and metal gear solid as well, if you wanna play the games you want you can emulate them and get a ps1 to usb adapter and upscale the games to make them better and you can do this on virtually any device even apple and android phones its the best way to do it and you can play any game ever made just about, even translations of games that never were in English like super robot wars alpha gaiden which is a great strategy game if you like 90s anime
@@Enzed_ was it new 20 years ago? It's around the 20 year mark where the electrolytic capacitors could start to fail and their ESR numbers or capacitance are way off. At any rate any electronic device 20 years and older should be looked over to see how the components are doing. It might be running fine but actually it could be slowly "failing".
@@Enzed_I'm trying to decide whether to get a CRT, Retrotino 5x or just use emulation. As much as I love the idea of having a CRT (particularly for pre- 6th gen consoles), it seems that I'd be looking at at least £200 for a 20+inch CRT (14 inch is a bit too small for me). Which is fine, but there's a chance it might only last me a few months (or even a few weeks). So at that point I'm thinking I just spend the extra £100 for a R5x which will last me probably forever (and allow me the convenience of being able to chill on my sofa playing on a 43 inch TV).
I have the PS1 Controller without analog sticks and I love it, I don’t know why but it just feels so good in my hands. It’s pretty satisfying to play games with. It’s abit annoying on later ps1 games like Crash Bandicoot Warped where they designed a lot of the levels to be used with the analog stick
Ps1 and snes on a tube TV have been keeping me together in 2024. Silent hill, Parasite Eve, Spyro, Rayman, Resident Evil 1&2. Currently playing the hell out of final fantasy 3/6. Ps2 controllers work on ps1 Also my primary CD player lol
bought one to learn a bit about electronics and successfully installed an xstation on it, love these old machines, they really dont build em like they used to do
When I bought my ps3 I picked up Twisted Metal 2 and Final Fantasy 9. Both very fun games. Was going to get Tony hawk’s pro skater 2 but ended up choosing the Dreamcast version.
A good upscaler, like the OSSC or one of the retrotinks, go a long way to making PS1 games look better. PS1 has RGB output also, so you can get a SCART cable that supports RGB to get better sharpness/colors/output/etc. MyLifeInGaming has a good PS1 guide that you can watch where they go over the output details, and other videos that discuss upscalers. The best upscalers you can get are probably the OSSC Pro, RetroTink 5x Pro, and PixelMorph 4k, but the less advanced and more affordable ones (original OSSC, RetroTink 2x) would be good enough if you're using a 1080p monitor/TV.
Still have my original PS1, complete with my Eminem sticker from '99. Awesome console. MGS1/2/3. GTA's, Splinter Cell. Way too many to mention. Cool content brother 👍.
Yeah the first edition had the 3 AV phono connections on the back. Also on the early version the laser disc drive was towards the upper left side, but heat from the internal PSU caused disc reading issues so they moved the laser to the right side on later models, like this one in the video.
I remember getting the original Playstation with birthday money when I was about 12 I think, I got it with Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I played the all the way upto when I was 18, great console and lots of good games. Dino Crisis 1 and 2 Resident Evil Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 3 Wipeout Taken Taken 2 Taken 3 Broken Sword 2 Doom Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy 7 Gran turismo Gta Gta 2 I think there was a Rugrats game that was pretty good. The Simpsons Wrestling was really good. I know there are more but they are the games that spring to mind when I think of the original Playstation.
If you're gonna play ps1 on original hardware you gotta play it on an old CRT tube TV, they were never designed to look good on modern HD flat screens.
I love the PS1…Preferred the N64 at the time, but over the years, the PS1 has grown on me a whole lot…Playing MK Trilogy, Tekken, Crash, NFL GameDay, NCAA GameBreaker, Ridge Racer, NBA Live, Madden, etc. I want to pull mine out at somepoint
My first introduction to gaming was n64 although it wasn’t until the original Xbox when I got to own my first console, I had zero exposure to the ps one growing up. over the last few days I decided to give my 5 year old son his first experience with gaming on the ps1, we’ve had a great time playing Spyro he loves it! The catalog is awesome! Totally mind blowing how good they are considering the technology at the time
PS1 was the only system I owned growing up. The next system is owned was an Xbox 360 when I was like 18 and living out of home. As someone who is very familiar with the PS1, that double press to close the lid was iconic haha
Man, I clocked so many hours on that console. I still had mine up until a few years ago, I didn't properly clean it before turning it on and it immediately caught on fire. Still have a massive CD case with all of my games, though.
You are definitely not the only person who enjoys playing the game on its original system, I'm probably not the first person to say this in the comment section, and I'm currently playing Final Fantasy IX on my original PS1, and having a blast! (Even if mine is yellowed/"sunburned")
It seems everyone I've talked to or watched videos from recalls living in a bubble where all their friends had N64 growing up and didn't know many people with PS1. I am also one of those people. In fact, after collecting for the N64 recently I got into the PS1 finally like you did and bought the same version of the system. I enjoy it quite a bit and I think It's different enough from the N64 that they are both warranted in one household. Take snowboard games for example. The N64 had 1080 which was lightyears better than Coolboarders 2 on PS1. Then take racing. The PS1 had gran turismo 2 and the N64 didn't really even have a racing simulator game. Then their first person shooters where N64 wins again. Then RPGs where PS1 wins again. Then multiplayer where N64 wins. video, music, and large sized games where PS1 wins. 3D platformers where N64 wins.
It's funny you mentioned that You knew nobody with a PlayStation because me being from the UK no one I knew had an N64 everyone had a PlayStation 1 I only ever played an N64 at after-school club Me and my older brother got a PlayStation 1 in 1996 And we played the hell out of that machine until Christmas of 2002 When it was replaced with a PlayStation 2 :)
I bought an og PlayStation about a year ago so I could play my dad's old collection and it is in surprisingly great condition but doesn't have the little cover on the back
One Basement Gamer and his journey with the PS1🤔 I got the 1st version of the PS1, which can be connected to a hifi system to being blast by the soundtrack of the games or even CDs including changing the variations of reverbs😃Mine is a chiped PAL one, which can play US and Japanese Games.
I was 10yr when the PS1 came out and me having the NES then Super NES and then saw the PS1 for the fist time at my friend's house, I was blown away by the 3d graphical leap, my broke ass would take 2 yrs to buy mine but by then it came with the dual shock analog controller and I bought Resident Evil 2 Dual Shock edition and that was awesome being able to play it on my 25" Philips Magnavox TV in my bedroom
The PS1 game library doesn't hold up as well as the PS2 or PS3, but it was still a great system. It got me back into video games. With Sega and Nintendo more focused on games for kids and teenagers, the PS1 offered a lot of more adult oriented games like the Twisted Metal games, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid franchises.
Every PlayStation 1 has a sticker on the bottom showing the month and year it was made. For example mine says June 1998. Also Syphon Filter was a really popular game when it came out. SF2 is the best one out the series. Spyro Year of the Dragon was my most favorite game as a kid.
Guilty of just liking the title without even watching the video.....given the opportunity and the catalogue of games I would play PS1 as well anyday....that at PS2.....
I've never seen a kangaroo in an olive garden. But as a part of the commonwealth, I've never seen a beaver in creek. Trod on a brown snake once, by accident. Nice console
Syphon Filter is a great series. You should definitely give it a more in depth look. In a some way you can say that it is reminiscent of a modern Sony's 3rd person action games but still in early phases of it.
The early ones with the rca ports were known for their sound quality. A lot of people use them as CD-players because the laser they used was apparently comparable with some much more expensive systems back in the day. They also had more problems however, e. g. overheating and the laser-sled wore out kind of quick thus needing new adjustment.
The one thing that will give you pause about the PS1 since you mostly played PS2 and 3 and not much PS1, is the fact that the OG PS1 did not ship with an analog controller. The original controller did not have analog sticks. So there are a lot of games that use the sticks but the problem with that is, throughout the entire generation developers had to assume some players did not have an analog controller. So while a lot of games did use the sticks, even they were hampered because the game design had to take into account no analog sticks as well. So either the game auto rotated as you moved or there was just forward and back and turn but no aiming up or down. Or a game might use R1 and R2 for up and down. It was a long while before a shooter even used the sticks. I think it might have been medal of honor or wolfenstein or something that I first played a shooter that used the sticks as they do today. So yeah, you will notice a lot of the games designs were such that even though they used the sticks, the camera was not something you could manipulate with them. There are some though. I think the PS1 prices stay a little down due to the fact that PS2 and PS3 can play PS1, but I am also one of those that like original hardware. I have 2 PS1 original consoles and 2 of the small models. I even have the attachable screen for the small one. I recently went through MGS1 on that little screen. lol I opened the slim model myself and that controller is my baby. I can't tell you how much I love fresh controllers. The slim came with the analog controller unlike how the original model came with the controller without sticks. Also, you can get a memory card that you can put a micro sd card in and just have one card and keep all your saves as you go.
Awesome video, as always! I would love to see more videos focusing on particular games - really enjoyed the ones on True crime and GTA liberty city stories.
Looks clean... (probably lightly used a magic eraser on the plastic) I love the PS1. I have a few models (original and slim). They are fun to clean, refurbish and put new capacitors in. I actually really like playing discs on the PSone slim but switch between the models depending on the game.
I suggest to avoid those cheap composite converter box, they display a very ugly image and have a ton of input lag. you can improve the image quality by using scart rgb cables for the ps1 and using a proprer upscaler like the gbs-c or the ossc, high quality image for low input lag. in games like platformers, ryhtm or fighting games it is important to avoid input lag because you need immediate response
Two first PlayStation games I played that I played was micro machines v3 and formula one. The very first formula one game had the best controls they nailed it straight out of the gate. Wasn't a formula 1 fan at all still not but that game has perfect handling.
My ps1 came with the controller without the sticks.. you've got to remember we had all moved on from snes and megadrive that only had a dpad.. its amazing how good you can get with a dpad when thats all youve ever had. I remember having to learn to play with thumbsticks 😂
I absolutely love my PS1 and all of the PlayStations however I seriously wish they would go back to Jewel case format and give us instruction booklets and even make a variation of PlayStation that is in the same case design as the PS1. It's so small and minimalist that you'd think with all of the slim designs that they're building these consoles on for their second and or third revision that they would have went back to this design in some way shape or form, and for all do you who sit here and say that they can't for whatever reason is asinine considering there is a huge variation of mini PCs out there that are smaller and every way shape or form then the PS1 and function just as good as consoles today if not better.
Syphon Filter 2 is magnificent, hopefully you can get the first one since, obviously, for story reasons you might want to start with the first one 😅 and basically gameplay-wise it's pretty much the same, in short; it is incredibly fun and badass, really epic series, at least the PS1 trilogy
My OG PSX had a sorta defect where games would freeze.. I really should have got it replaced but I just tossed it and got a PS 1 in like Dec 2000 you know the smaller model.. I still have it in the closet.. Maybe I’ll look into getting some memory cards and hook it up again one day! I still do play my ps 1 collection sometimes on ps3
What did you think of syphon filter 2? I loved that game when i was a kid First game i owned when i got the psx my friend had syphonfilter 1 used to play it all the time at his house but never could pas the first level so when we reached that point we restarted the mission untill one day he called me to tell me he had discoverd a way to finish the mission Just fun memorys i have with syphonfilter but also spyro, crash, driver, deadballzone, tekken2&3, hogs of war, thps2
I own both the OG PS1 and the slim PSOne. I prefer playing on the PSOne, but the fat one is chipped and that's the one I use for games from other regions.

It's so quiet because it doesn't have any fans in it
Also the CD drive sits on rubber grommets to minimize the noise from reading the disk
And it doesn't have any fans in it 'cause it don't need em, super low power consumption. One reason to play PS1 games on a PS1 console
@@Hakenfinger-Jakob Yup, add to this that the CDs in the PS1 spin significantly slower than the DVDs in PS2 or Blu-ray's in PS3.

For me it was also Syphon Filter, Spyro, Gran Turismo, Crash Team Racing. We still play CTR, Micro machines and Quake 2 in 4 player splitscreen 🙌
Don’t forget about hydro thunder
Medal of Honor series too.

MemCard Pro for the PS1 are popular. You can store lots of game saves. Or you can make a picoMemcard for the PS1.

Every PlayStation 1 has a sticker on the bottom showing the month and year it was made. For example mine says June 1998. Also Syphon Filter was a really popular game when it came out. SF2 is the best one out the series. Spyro Year of the Dragon was my most favorite game as a kid.
The startup definitely brings back the anxiety feeling, hoping you get to the good screen.
Nice console
its funny how basic/cheap it looks now , but I remember it being next level technology at 5 years old.
Yeah, I know what you mean. It was like experiencing the future in person for the 1st time.
Syphon Filter is a great series. You should definitely give it a more in depth look. In a some way you can say that it is reminiscent of a modern Sony's 3rd person action games but still in early phases of it.
Still my favourite console, i love the early 3d jank.
Respect for that bad company one copy on display!
That was one of the games of all time..
The early ones with the rca ports were known for their sound quality. A lot of people use them as CD-players because the laser they used was apparently comparable with some much more expensive systems back in the day. They also had more problems however, e. g. overheating and the laser-sled wore out kind of quick thus needing new adjustment.
It's more like 30 years old. That makes me feel old 😅
The one thing that will give you pause about the PS1 since you mostly played PS2 and 3 and not much PS1, is the fact that the OG PS1 did not ship with an analog controller.
I recently went through MGS1 on that little screen. lol
I opened the slim model myself and that controller is my baby.
My fave ps1 games:
- Driver
- Bushido Blade
- Warcraft II
edit: oh ya and final fantasy 9
PS1's are so reliable! Trying to keep my Sega Saturn going is a nightmare!
PS1 was an absolute beast/blast!! of a console. And crash bandicoot 1 of course was so amazing for it's time .
I loved the Gex's video games for the platform.
Damn. I completely forgot that I had Test Drive on the PS1 back in the day. I don't think I ever made any progress in that game.
I still have my original PS1 with the non-analog stick controllers still functioning. I have to PS upside down for it to read the games tho haha
I was thinking of selling my PS5 because this is what i play all the time along with PS2
Hey man great video! I have a question. How do you set up an old console like that on your monitor with the best settings?
one Latin phrase that best describes the ps1: Sic Parvis Magna- Greatness from small beginning's.
Test Drive games were my jam back in the day. And Syphon Filter, not the best games, but they're also big name PS1 games, sooo.
At first everyone held them like tiny arcade sticks 😅
9:34 I still got atleast 5 of those first gen controllers lying around, more then i do dualshocks.
Crash & Spyro trilogy made up my childhood
Parasyte eve, resident evil, and Syphonfilter were my favorites GTA was cool too.
PS one can be played on evry PS3. But to get the best value from your PS one using a CRT for light gun 🔫 shutters is a must.
I bought my PS1 used with Syphon Filter when the PS2 came out... I forgot to buy a memory card 🫠
More people should know about syphon filter
The ps1 was pretty quiet buy todays standards. It didn't have a fan so you can only hear the disk spinning and the lazer both of wich arnt that loud
I say this with love.he is the forrest gump of gaming.
Blowing on the cartridge like your knee cap exploded bahahah I couldn't relate more 🤣
The RetroTINK-2x HDMI converter will help display quality some with these older systems.
If you're on a PS1 kick you absolutely need Crash Team Racing in your life.
What did you think of syphon filter 2?
I loved that game when i was a kid
First game i owned when i got the psx my friend had syphonfilter 1 used to play it all the time at his house but never could pas the first level so when we reached that point we restarted the mission untill one day he called me to tell me he had discoverd a way to finish the mission
Just fun memorys i have with syphonfilter but also spyro, crash, driver, deadballzone, tekken2&3, hogs of war, thps2
the best games for ps1 are: army men air attack 2, winning eleven 2002 (the intro is just hmmm) and motor racer 2
I own both the OG PS1 and the slim PSOne.
I prefer playing on the PSOne, but the fat one is chipped and that's the one I use for games from other regions.
