    --- Online Job Applications: Why can't I find a job ---
    As a career mentor I talk to a lot of people who ask me "Why can't I find a job? I've submitted nearly a hundred online job applications, but I get no response. Why am I not getting interviews? I’m worried I’m never going to find a job.”
    I tell them, "I know why you are not getting job interviews. Submitting your resume online doesn't work. Online job applications are a waste of time."
    The best way to find a good job is networking.

    Online applications do not work but, that is often the only way to apply for that job you are seeking.

    I was in restaurant and retail management for 15+ years, back when we took in person applications. Being on the other side now trying to break back into management I simply don't understand how the managers don't want to put my face with the application. I can't even get past the hourly employee. I'm standing in front of people talking about my desire to work there (knowing they are hiring and they probably get referral bonuses) and yet they continually say you have to fill out the application online. This new world of applying is VERY frustrating and When I get back into management I'm going to figure out a way around this crazy online loop for hiring!
    In my industry, your quality of life is all about being fully staffed and I can't imagine the frustrations with not being allowed to take applications and interview their own applicants by making them all go through a corporate office application process. I am sure there are so many qualified employees lost by this.

      I'm just going to work with a recruiter again, which sucks for the company because then they have to pay that recruiter too but at my level it's hard to get face to face, or to personally know district managers, etc.

    The worst part of finding a job during the unemployment process is when family members start to belittle and look down upon you for not having a job. Then they wonder why we can't just "suck it up" like my family harps onto me about. All of the much induced stress and anxiety isn't very healthy when you don't have a good support system to help you in rough times of being unemployed. They are usually the same ones that also claim it's "so easy" to find one if you "apply yourself". When my mom told me on Saturday when we were looking for jobs and she said why is it that your brother was able to find a job before you I simply told her to stop putting him on a pedestal and make it seem like he's better than me. That's what really bothers me and she doesn't even understand that. The thing is that I don't want to be stuck with a job that I will hate anyways like the last job I had of almost 6 years. I would rather be unemployed without having to suffer again anyways with something I will end up loathing.

    • @TurningScienceVideo
      @TurningScienceVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very sorry you are having to deal with family pressure and comparisons. Perhaps you simply have higher standards than your brother or are looking for a more specialized position!

      I agree with you. The same thing happens to me when I am in the US and unemployed after teaching English abroad on 1 year contracts. Every time I stay at my parents house, I get aggravated by family members as to why am I not working. The latest was my cousin who is a boomer in his 60s. He said what are you doing, just laying around, because there are plenty of jobs out there. Yeah, go get stuffed.

      Most HR people will always tell you to submit online, and sometimes you do need to do this to begin the formal process. I only do it after I already have a solid lead into the company and it looks promising. Then I'll follow their formal process.

      If the company tells you to go online then the company doesn’t hire and the job offer is fake, it’s just a tactic to show the competitors that they are doing well, they are growing and hiring new personnel ! Internet is good to see where you can simply call or just go straight to the office and leave your resume ! If they will insist you go online then you can insist so that these motherfuckers go and have intercourse with themselves !

    I have about 100+ or 200+ job and internship applications per month. It does clog up my email. I no longer read resumes. I do welcome the occasional calls direct to my line. That way they prove that they:
    1. make the extra effort to find out who I am.
    2. have the opportunity to prove their communication and social skills.
    But before that make sure that he'd better find out more about what the company do and how we do it.

    So funny I thought about the lottery thing seconds before I heard it in your vid . First time actually trying to find a “job” in over 10 years . Always been through someone or word of mouth as a freelancer /contractor. after the whole Covid thing, being laid off and stuck with the kids for online school (as well as many personal things like deaths in the fam that’s taken a toll on me) it’s been 3 years since having a “job” . No replies online at all from applications, even grocery stores (which clearly states they are hiring all the time) which is a bit demoralizing. Going into places asking if they are hiring, they just look at me weirdly and tell me to apply online 🤦‍♀️ I started out thinking it would be a piece of cake like it’s been in the past but apparently things have changed …

    There's almost no other option. Jobs are posted online & must be applied to online. I often email the contact person listed to ask a question & almost never get a response. No business gives a shit about applicants, they require online applications & won't give another option. They do find it annoying & won't see you if a job is advertised & you contact them or visit them directly. They see it as an intrusion, like you're breaking rules.

    • @TurningScienceVideo
      @TurningScienceVideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is often the case for the HR department - they have a job to do and they want you to follow the rules. They often don't really understand that job they are trying to fill anyway. The hiring manager usually has a very different perspective.
      Keep in mind that the majority of good jobs aren't even posted online (Hidden job market). To find these, you have to connect with people directly.

I feel I pull myself into a hundred different direction at once. Do you have a video on use LinkedIn correctly, I don't post meaningful comments, I used LinkedIn likes facebook. I scrolled someone's feed. Wow, this person is smarter then me because they're a CEO or a director That's cool. Then leave the site.

    • @TurningScienceVideo
      @TurningScienceVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your input. I don't currently have a video on using LinkedIn. However, I can give you a few pointers here. The most important thing is to have a target. I know you said that you don't have a clear job in mind, but I do strongly suggest you choose a general area to target. It could be an application, a market, or a technology, but when you have a target, you can use the search function in LinkedIn. Search for keywords related to your target and you will find people, companies, and posts that will help you learn more about your target. Join groups that are related to your target area, and you will begin to get lots of relevant information in your feed. This will help you understand what new developments are happening in your target area, and you will begin to find jobs that you would like to do, and people who can help you get them.

It is unbelievable how companies try to verify through that site. Personally I would not hire a person with too many Linkedin interactions. That is a sign of the pursuit of creating a misleading image. I can not believe how companies buy it. I believe Linkedin will be a place like Facebook in the near future. empty space. which already is. fake identities. also does not work for networking, whatsapp is faster through your own network to reach out 2nd ord 3rd tier contacts.
