  • People refer to it all the time. We talk about its food and its history and its heat, but what is The South? What states should be included when someone talks about the south? That depends on who you’re talking to.

      Kansas City and St. Louis are distinctly Northern cities, since those are the largest population centers and since Missouri didn’t secede from the Union, I would consider it a Northern state. Not to say there aren’t rural/Southern cultural parts of the state.

      @spencerandersen271 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've read Ozark literature and seen some of Bourdain's special in the Missouri Ozarks and I would disagree. The culture is a mishmash between Southern and Midwestern; an Ozarks accent sounds halfway between a thick Tennessee accent and a neutral (maybe Kansan) Midwestern accent. It's not nearly as Southern as, say, the Arkansas side of the Ozarks.
      Having said that, Missouri as a whole is equally Southern and Midwestern. It was torn during the Civil War, and even today sits between these two identities. St. Louis is a culturally Midwestern city, but was also a huge center for blues, jazz and rock n' roll (music styles usually associated with Southern cities like New Orleans and Nashville) during the early 20th century. Kansas City is famous for its barbecue, even though THAT method of cooking meat is associated with the South. So it's definitely a blend, and difficult to define.

      hi.. 'Border States' are still Southern. They just (for the most part) didn't secede. But when Lincoln tried to conscript Virginia to fight sister Southern states.. then Virginia became motivated secessionists. peace

      @@dvferyance Yeah, this is an interesting debate. I understand your point, Northern Virginia has a lot of Yankee transplants & modern day carpetbaggers.. but having recent transplants doesn't necessarily change the definition of 'the South'. Virginia is still below the Mason-Dixon, it still has hundreds of years of history as a Southern colony/state.. and Virginia, demographically, is still within the 'Black Belt'. All characteristics of the South. Northern Virginia government workers have changed Virginia to some degree politically, but it doesn't suddenly remove VA from the South. /peace

    I continue to watch videos like this because Texas is always undecided 🤷🏻‍♀️ I took a Texas history class in college and my professor said “southern history doesn’t claim Texas and western history doesn’t either, that’s why, for now, Texas is just Texas” 😂 I see my state as very southern and very southwestern, as well as a lot of Mexican influence (obviously); we have the landscape, dialect and personality of both lol. People never accurately depict the "sweet tea" split. In the south (and even many areas of northern New Jersey), they have "iced tea", which tastes like cold tea, as well as "sweet tea", which tastes like cold tea with a lot of sugar. In the North however, we only have "iced tea", BUT it tastes _MUCH SWEETER_ than the South's "sweet tea", it's almost more of a juice, similar to Snapple, Brisk, and Arizona.

I'm from West Virginia and am consistently told by people from the deep south i.e. Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, etc that I am from way up north but then people from Michigan and Massachusetts all act like I'm from the deep south. Just because someone is not from the deep deep South doesn't mean that they won't have a strong accent because I can assure you that people from Eastern Kentucky can have some pretty thick accents.

    It could also just be the sun belt though that has different definitions as well, which generally includes California (roughly up to Sacramento, some definitions extend it to Redding), and Las Vegas, though Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, southern California, and Florida are all in the sun belt by every definition...some definitions also include Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Reno, and Salt Lake City, though it for sure does not go any further north than that

    Came here because I was curious if they'd make the distinction between northern and southern Ohio. People don't consider southern Ohio the south, until they've been to the northeastern coast. Disappointed it wasn't mentioned, historically this is not just my opinion but one that has been around since the Civil war.

    This video is okay I guess, but it failed to include all four of the border states during the civil war, which were Missori, Kentucky, Maryland, and West (western)Virginia. And the sweet tea line isn't relivent, all of Virginia is southern, every part of the state still has its cultural foundation in the old families like the Lees and the Hills, no matter how many northerners move inside her borders.(No offense to northerners)

    1:18 also forgot West Virginia. This is actually why West Virginia is a state. They chose to stay in the union. Mainly because they really didn’t own slaves from the mountainy landscape. So it wasn’t a huge problem to them if slavery did or didn’t end.

    Maryland did not fight for the north. Marylanders either went south to join a regiment in Virginia or joined the Maryland regiment. All of the Union Maryland regiments are all people from different states that are not from Maryland, most were from Pennsylvania. If anyone wants to argue with me, that is fine. I am free to educate the public about the real history of Maryland.

    I cross the Mason-Dixon Line daily over the Ohio River commuting to and from work. There is no difference evident when I cross. I think of where I live as a sort of "Mason-Dixon Zone," a blended region. Louisville, Ky. has strong labor unions and lots of Catholics, as does Southern Indiana. SI has lots of hills, hollows, fishin' spots, as does Kentucky. On both sides of the river, many people use the pronoun "you-all," through southern accents are less prevalent on both because of so many newcomers around here in the last 30 years. And because of the internet, localisms in speech are giving way to a more national language; we frequently say "soda" for soft drink. Thirty years ago, we called all colas "cokes," like in the deep south.

      I lived in KY for a little bit. Yes u are right, there really isn't much of a difference there. Sure Kentucky is culturally southern but tbh I consider it more of a Midwestern state imo

    • @johnspinelli9396
      @johnspinelli9396 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @raw cramp Because it's split and it is. The parts near Louisville and Cincinnati are very Midwestern culturally and the Bluegrass regions looks a lot like Ohio. The rest of the State especially near Tennessee is obviously very southern

    • @brianarbenz7206
      @brianarbenz7206 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Raw Camp Those counties near Cincinnati, plus Louisville have about 40 percent of Kentucky’s population, about 60 percent of its voter participation, and the vast majority of its industry and commerce. They are not little exceptions. They, plus the Bluegrass region, drive the state.

      D Martin people are incorrectly thinking that rural areas are the qualification for being southern. Climate of the south is fairly uniform and the areas that the population will almost unanimously agree on as being southern doesn't stretch past Arkansas to the west and northern virginia is about as far as it goes, but states like Kentucky and West Virginia will mostly not identity as being a southern state
