    I admire how Mazda offered non- traditional engines like the rotary, Miller cycle and this tiny 1.8L V6. A great company that builds interesting autos.

      Swap in a Mazda Japan Spec 200 HP KLZE 2.5L V6 from the contemporary MX-6 and you have one heck of a fun car. The V6 swap is easy to do.

    Back in the days when there were so many options for 20-30 year old guys[girls too, I guess] to buy a reasonably priced car that was sporty. And had 2 doors. Escort,Beretta,Daytona,Shadow,Talon,Eclipse,Laser,LeBaron,Sunbird,Probe,GrandAm,Sundance,Tempo,Cavalier,Neon,and that is just the Big 3. Nowadays there are really only a couple of Imports. Civic? Changes in economic opportunities and spending power aren't helping in providing more variety in affordable but sporty car choices to the current 20-30 year olds. Carmakers that haven't make enough money from selling failed sedans/economy cars are now focusing solely on SUVs to recover those losses, leaving Honda & Hyundai to be the only ones still creating affordable sports sedans and hatchbacks.

    My first car was a purple '95 mx3 with a 1.6 straight-four. I learned stick in that little thing but it was tired at 200K. Sold it because I thought I wouldn't be able to use stick going to school in San Francisco (to be fair, hill starts were very hard because it would gurgle for 30 seconds before it would give power after clutch release).
    I found it on the side of the road today, 4 1/2 years later, half chopped up outside a fire station. According to the locals, the lady I sold it to abandoned it about 6 months after I sold it. The cops took it in and they gave it to the fire department... who used it for jaws-of-life practice. Now I really feel bad for selling it. I could've saved it! I suppose this is my punishment for buying an automatic (I've since switched back to stick).
    Not to mention there was a late 80s Hyundai Excel wagon next to it that looked like it was in good shape... before they chopped it. It was a shame seeing two rare late-80's/early-90's cars chopped up like that... one of them wasn't very good to begin with, but that's not the point!

    Back when I was in HS my friend had one of these and when he told me it had a 1.8L V6 I said "you mean 4 cylinder" and he said no, insisting it was a V6. I said no way is it a V6 my Ford Escort ZX2 had a 2.0L engine and that's a 4 cylinder! The smallest V6 I knew about was in the Probe/MX6 at 2.5L and that's already so small it's silly when most V6's are like 3.0 to 3.5L I said there is no way you have a 1.8L V6 lol Hondas have 1.8L 4 cylinders and this went on and on he was getting so mad insisting again that it was a 1.8L V6! Well turned out he was right and I learned something new! I remember hearing that the engine was smooth but still seemed strange my ZX2 had a DOHC Zetec 2.0L 4 Cylinder that made like 130HP or about the same as this. Was it wroth the extra bank, extra cams, extra spark plugs and injectors to make such a small V6?? I liked the car just fine but the engine seemed so strange!

      It's worth it for the V6 sound... and the 2.5 Probe v6 fits as well as the 200hp 170tq version of that engine. Bolts right in.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      CDN12Guns There are a few good reasons to use a V6 over a four-cylinder. More cylinders mean a greater valve area for a given displacement, meaning that the 6 cylinder car will have an airflow advantage. Also, maximum RPM is dictated by the weight of the pistons and how long their stroke is - more cylinders means each one is lighter and the stroke shorter, allowing it to rev higher without coming apart.
      Of course, Mazda were not using either of those advantages, because 130hp and 7500rpm out of a 1.8 can easily be achieved with a four-banger. Just look at Honda's B18C VTEC monster with like 190hp and almost tickling 9k. That's really pushing it. If Mazda had gone mouth-foaming crazy like Honda had, this little V6 would be making fantastic power and the most unbelievable sound.
      But, Mazda always had that Wankel card to play, and in terms of craziness, a rotary can go full two-stroke insane if you want it.

    • @pgtmr2713
      @pgtmr2713 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mazda went "crazier" with other aspects of the engines. Designing the block for better sound and to cancel out unpleasant vibrations. Also with the intake design and the VRIS system designed to keep airflow and power up through the rpm range. Something only higher end cars had at the time. Like the Porsche 959, Taurus SHO, I think Mercedes had a similar intake for a V6 also, and of course the legendary 4AGEs from Toyota in the MR2s and the AE86s. So while the numbers may not appear stellar, you have more of that power all of the time... not just when the VTEC kicks in. You have to wind out a type R or S2000 to get all of the ponies. Then you pay crazy prices for mods because everyone wants the parts. You could pull off a JY upgrade 180-190hp for a few hundred if you know what you're looking for in almost any JY.
      I have the klze 2.5l and the MPGs aren't that far off an ecoboost1.6l making less power, less fun, not as smooth with drive by wire and whatever the turbo is doing. The ecoboost is saying it gets 23.5, while the KLZE is about 22 with my foot in it. There are people claiming high 30s hypermiling KLs with a turbo. I can't claim that though. That's pretty good for sitting at around 3k rpms at freeway speeds.
      The KLs can handle 9k but only just, then the oil pump won't hold out. 8k is possible but not absolutely necessary, you want more, you turbo it. Forged steel cranks fixed in a cradle, no crank caps. They didn't exactly skimp. If you need rods, Millenia S has better ones for boost.
      So far as engine sound goes, mine sounds better than any VTEC zinging at 9k. Give a listen

      I have a v6 1.8 Mx 3 :-)
      Believe me it is worth it. The sound is amazing. Back then in Japan, they had to make a v6 engine,but at the same time it had to be small so the taxes were affordable. 25 years later, i can still get the rpm to 7k and the sound is never boring! :D

    Direct competitor to the Nissan NX2000 at the time. Went with the NX2k as it was cheaper to buy, being significantly discounted on the lots. Best choice ever, as it was a faster car, had far more of an aftermarket (turbo kits, Japan spec DET drops ins), and was super cheap to own with its Sentra heritage. Went on for 250k before giving it away. Never any mechanical problems other than the a/c hardware crapping out more than normal.

    I had a 93 mx3 with the 1.6 4cyl. Awesome little car. I had a manual 5 speed swapped into my automatic mx3. They hung a clutch and I drove to Virginia Beach and back to Maine a few times that summer. I had a full exhaust and an exedy clutch. It sounded nice! I miss that car. Can’t find them anymore.

      IN a sports car? Next to impossible? Most people are seeking a stick in a sports based car. I mean, they SHOULD be? Why GET one? Next year? Shoot, I still have my 92 GTI 16v.. fun cars are worth enjoying for years.

    • @MaestroTJS
      @MaestroTJS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't say next year, I said "next near" as in "nearly," which probably would have been the better way to word it. Look, I love stick shifts in theory and have zero interest in dual-clutch crap or paddle shift automatics. I can't believe there are some sports cars you can't even get with a manual anymore--I'd probably cross them off my list if I were shopping. But it's true, especially in non-sporty cars, that it's very difficult to sell a manual on the used car market and their value is a lot lower. Maybe it's partly because of where I live but traffic can be so bad that it's just a huge pain in the ass. In an ideal world I'd own two cars, one for that day-to-day shit and one with a stick for other times....

    • @djkenny1202
      @djkenny1202 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I am in more control in a stick. I know that many people live too far from their work place and commute in a car long distances. So glad I can bike to work or grab a bus. Planned my housing around avoiding that lifestyle. Stressful. I never forcasted selling a car when I bought it. But yeah, sporty car or econo box you are trying to get every horse out of, I would for sure go Stick no matter what I might potentially get in 15 years for it. The idea of a Mazda MX3 losing it's sweet smooth shifting 5 speed manual, and all that pep? Depressing. It would be like getting a Miata with a auto. Those have the most magical stick shifts. Sacrelage? Some cars, like a Miata, I doubt they lose out value. The people buying them are likely not looking for a mellow commuter car. Again, not that it matters in terms of getting what makes sense for you.

      IKR? It's become a lost art just like lath and plaster. I'm 26 and I love stick shifts, so much fun!!! My dad has a 1999 Jeep Wrangler with a stick shift and I really enjoy driving it. My personal Vehicle is a 1990 Plymouth Acclaim LX. It's an automatic but it's a really nice car, very comfortable and I love it, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Way better then the shit their churning up these days!

    I had one of these, but I didn't pay anything close to these prices. I had a 1993 Special Edition V6 with raspberry metallic paint, non-Honeycomb-cereal, five-spoke wheels, and standard black leather and it was $15500. I don't even think they made 2500 of them. I loved that car. The V6 was so smooth and it made the right noises. Honestly, it felt at least a class up from what I paid.

    The Mazda MX-3 is an odd little car and should be considered a collectors item nowadays because of them being hard to come by and it also has a small V6. Yes, the Mazda MX-3 as far as I know has the smallest V6 found in a production car. Well, at least in North America. I know that Mitsubishi makes a 1.6 litre V6 engine that is commonly found in Lancers, but it was only sold in Japan though. I'm not a big fan of Nissans and the Toyota Paseo is a weak sauce car to me, so the Mazda MX-3 is my preferred choice of car. Oh and the V6 engine found in the Ford Probe and Mazda MX-6 is said to be a larger version of the Mazda MX-3's V6 engine.

    I liked mine. It was the GS fully loaded. I traded my 92 mustang gt for it. It reminded me of the Honda CRX except it had a back seat. The reason we traded for it was, surprisingly our mustang didn't seem to fit our child seat in the back like I'd like it to. Again surprisingly it fit better in the GS and my full five piece drum kit also fit better. Probably because of the hatch angle being less sloped than the mustang. One of the surprising features, to me at least, was the ability to change the interior dashboard lighting from green to orange/red. It handled really well, like a rat with sneakers and with the V6 it was also surprisingly quick, not mustang gt quick but quick enough for my taste.

      Are you sure that there only 2 MX-3s? I've seen 3-4 in the Thessaloniki area.
      2 red ones, 2 green ones. The 1 green one looked like its bonnet was deformed a bit but the other 3 are driven quite regularly. There's a stickered-up faux tuner green MX-3 quite close to me. It sounds unremarkable considering it's a V-6.

    A buddy of mine has one of these, worn and rusty but the drivetrain is in mint condition. Unfortunately it has the 1.6/ 5 speed, not the V6. Ironically on the highway with a fresh tune up, it netted 35 mpg, the same as his grandfather's 1989 Plymouth Horizon hatchback with the K-car 2.2 and a 5 speed stick. I'm still trying to figure that one out...
