Secondary red dots are used in long range competitive shooting to aid in target spotting that are hard to find in the glass. So even for a bolt gun they have uses.
Once again I just love your introduction! I really appreciate how easy you can explain in detail what to consider and what it is we need to be aware of when purchasing and training with various products and the struggles we may encounter. Thank you very much Miss Tacticool Girlfriend! Cheers!
Recently got a holosun 507 with your affiliate link from when you reviewed it. Hope that’s still up and running for you. Thanks in part to you, I had the confidence to buy my first gun a couple days ago and I’m now aspiring to one day attempt an AR build. Your channel is a fantastic resource and I sincerely hope that you keep doing what your doing. Love the content.
Your set up is nice. Tried doing the offset red dot 3 years back and found it wasn’t for me as I rarely shoot past 300. The extra weight and money was only worth it for me I fully took advantage of shooting at a distance. Glad it works for you.
Badger, unity or ad-recon+Arisaka 35/45 offset are all excellent. Your cheek weld can stay the same & snapping back/forth w/o additional training needed to avoid “fishing” between optics such as needed for top mounted dots used for passive aiming(while training can get around this it isn’t as natural & since I don’t have nods yet, isn’t something that I care for. Since you mentioned acogs, the adm 2.04” adm cantilever with Arisaka 35 deg w/1.93 riser option is great & LW.
I'm confident that I've probably watched every "canted red dot" video out there on the TH-cams haha. To be completely honest though, there's really only a handful, so I'm glad to watch yet another one and hear your input. Appreciate it! Who knows.. maybe one day I'll make the leap?
New sub here..just found your channel and I freaking LOVE IT!! very informative..very well put together and your style is great..I'm currently building a 10.5" side charging 300blk and this inspired me even further..my next step is an optic.. probably gonna go with something from primary arms as well I've heard nothing but good things about them.... awesome channel
With Unity releasing their universal FTC magnifier mount, I'm looking at swapping out my 3x magnifier for a 6x. But for a longer range build I've been considering mounting a 4-12 scope as low as possible, with a red dot on top which I hope will be around the same height as the 2.26 I'm running now
@@Yt-gd8ps actually taking shots? Not more than 600 or so if I stick with 5.56. closer to 1k if I end up going with 6.5 Grendel or 6mm ARC. But wanted a bit more magnification for observation at range beyond what I'd actually be engaging at.
I remember seeing Ian from Forgotten Weapons wear overwear during Finish Brutality from Varusteleka, like a white nylon sheath, seemed lightweight but snowproof, you might find it useful in the snow
Was staring at your RMR pretty much the whole video trying to figure out why it looked weird. Glad you mentioned the kill flash for it! I recently went with the LVPO w/ offset RMR to try out. I'm really liking it. I've been playing with, when going to off shoulder and trying to use the RMR, to just leave the rifle shouldered normally and look through the dot. Your POI will be a little low and left. Don't know if its a good way to do it, but something I'm trying out. Edit: spelling
@@DonPatrono The scope is already a higher mount, and not that I have played with it a whole lot, but I like the slight rotation and keeping check weld over a top mount. The rotation or coming up straight into the dot is faster for me. Haven't shot it "pretending" it was a top mount but In dry fire, can see how it's a little harder to come up into the same position every time when not getting that check weld. But again this is my first LVPO\dot set up and only been using it for a few months now.
If your poi is not dead on, then either you didn't sight in that rmr correctly or you didn't have that rifle exactly at 45° when you zeroed it, then as you shoot it shouldered, you may or may not be holding that rifle the same way it was zeroed, that's why the poi is off from the dot. Using a bubble level, most have that line for a 45° angle, that may help so you can zero it properly but also train yourself to turn the gun to the correct position consistently. I may be wrong about it all, I don't run any offset sights, but I know I've heard others talking about it and possible poa to poi shifts.
@@toddk1377 you are completely correct. The only reason it's not correct POI is cause the RMR is sighted in with the rifle on the 45 degree cant. So when shouldering on my off (left) shoulder, I leave the rifle vertical, like you normally would, it causes the slight side shift, just like you are saying. It was just something I was trying, talking about when Tacticool GF brought up using the RMR on the off (typically left) shoulder, and how it's difficult.
@@-The-Bob- I didn't realize you was talking about the offhand side, okay, that was my mistake. I see exactly what you're saying now. That said, that's a strong pro for the piggy back option, but just have to train with either set up to become efficient.
In addition to using the offset for snap shots, I use my offset red dot as a spotting scope on my 6.5 Grendel rifle... I spot the target / game on the offset then flip to the main rifle scope. I'm on target without having to search for it through the rifle scope... May be a hunting thing but gets me on without searching
I wanna see someone bring to the market a LPFO option, a lightweight, low power, fixed power optic, with a form factor of an LPVO, but with a fixed 8x or 10x magnification. Being fixed, they should be able to provide significant weight savings, down to perhaps 8-10 ounces. Give it a small amount of illumination, just enough for daylight brightness, and something like an ACSS reticle. Pair that with a top mounted or offset red dot and that's all you need. Yes, I know the ACOG is similar, but their 6x optic version is very heavy and the eye relief of the ACOG is atrocious. I'm looking for something functionally like a 1-8 or 1-10 LPVO in form factor and eye relief, but with weight saving due to being fixed power.
@@TacticoolGirlfriend I hope so, but my beef with the prism sights is I think they’re overbuilt. I get it, people want the “built like a tank” and “bomb proof” but LPVOs are not built to that standard. I would love something more like an LPVO in max magnification and durability, but lighter because it’s fixed power.
I know ILya of DarkLordofOptics has suggested something similar, IIRC his scope of choice for this was the SWFA Ultralight 2.5-10, which would probably be amazing for this if it had illumination.
@@JeffNeelzebub you only really need illumination for high speed and failing light, so you wouldn't need to worry about having a daylight bright reticle if you're running a dot alongside a fixed power
Two of my rifles have canted reddots, my M1A and my SCAR17. They're super handy and I couldn't see having a rifle with a magnified optic without one. Also allows me to evaluate micro reddots on rifles and really get a good feel for them.
Great job as always. I just added a canted secondary red dot to go with the LPVO on my setup a few days ago. It feels very natural to me. Much smoother transition than the Red dot/magnifyer combo it replaced.
As for budget LPVO’s. The shepherd scopes rugged Mil-r 1-8x will compete with vudu, razor, accupower & pa Plx for 450-550. I would say it’s better than the above mentioned yet is very close for 1/2 the cost & is a massive leap from a strike Eagle or pa SLx line up. Sincerely, a PA GLx/PLx/Aurora ACSS acog Ho
interesting you chose the canted mount, rather than mounted on top of your lpvo. between the popularity of more “heads up” mounting systems like unity tactical, and the benefit of a passive aiming nvgs friendly hob, seems like its gaining more popularity over the benefit of the universal cheek weld for canted. no right answer, everyone makes different choices. but it does seem like canted is becoming the “keymod” to the top mounted “mlok”.
I feel that. Been running a canted sight and for a while and thinking of adding a top mounted….only thing I can knock on the top mounted is the extreme hight over bore. But training fixes that
Anyone interested in doing this might consider Condition One scope mounts from Badger Ordnance. They are, however, extremely expensive, to say nothing of the cost of a good red dot, AND your main optic. Seeing as TGF already had an RMR sitting around, it's not a huge swing for her. That said, this is going to cost you the same as an actual, decent AR, so wallets beware!
TBF, an ad-recon plus an Arisaka 35/45 offset mount is within 50-75 bones of the 🦡 mount systems. The above combo, Badger or unity fast LPVO mounts are all ba in their own rights.

I 'm old school , I got iron sights that worked in da Nam, but I did buy a nikon tactical 3-9 cause NIkon went all woke and stopped making scopes, was afraid couldn't find one.
I recently sbr'd a Virtus and slapped an Eotech on it. I've spent the last two weeks staring at LPVO/red dot set ups. Very timely video for me.
I run the same set up as your and I run LPVO with RDS. I much prefer this set up over eotech&magnifier combo.

For those of us who are on a tighter budget, UTG makes some great and inexpensive 45 degree canted mounting options!
totally valid reason. a good lpvo top mounted system will run you $400.
