The Rai Limbus' Pragmatic Betrayal: The Origins of the Gurkha Soldiers
The Rai Limbus, rather than the Lepchas, Bhutias, Chettris, Brahmins, Newars, or Tamangs, became the renowned Gurkha soldiers serving in the British Army. The key to understanding this lies in the Limbus' opportunistic betrayal of both Nepal and Sikkim, which allowed them to curry favor with the British invaders.
In the early 19th century, the newly unified Nepalese kingdom under the Gorkha rulers began expanding its territory, including the conquest of the neighboring kingdom of Sikkim. This brought Nepal into conflict with the British East India Company, which controlled much of northern and eastern India. When Nepal's incursions into British-influenced areas escalated, the Company launched an invasion of Nepal in 1814.
During the ensuing Anglo-Nepalese War, the British forces encountered fierce resistance from the skilled and determined Gorkha soldiers of Nepal. However, the Rai Limbus, a minority ethnic group in Sikkim, saw an opportunity to betray both their Sikkimese Lepcha and Bhutia countrymen as well as their fellow Gorkhali in Nepal.
Rather than fighting alongside their Sikkimese or Nepalese neighbors, the Rai Limbus actively assisted the British in their campaign to subjugate the Sikkimese kingdom. They helped the British make Sikkim a British protectorate and forced the kingdom to allow British trade with Tibet. The Limbus also aided the British in annexing the strategically important region of Darjeeling, where the indigenous Lepcha and Bhutia peoples were subsequently treated as second-class citizens.
In doing so, the Limbus betrayed not only their Sikkimese neighbors, but also the Gorkhas of Nepal who had previously granted them autonomy and Kipat land rights. The Limbus were opportunists, willing to side with the British invaders against both the Gorkhas and the Sikkimese in order to curry favor and advance their own interests.
Furthermore, the British likely viewed the Limbus as more malleable and "primitive" compared to the more advanced Lepchas, Bhutias, Newars and Tamangs. This perception may have further justified the British's use of the Limbus against the other ethnic groups in the region. The Limbus' lack of strong historical ties to either Nepal or Sikkim also made them more willing to serve as British proxies.
In contrast, the Newars and Khas peoples, who had deep roots in Nepal and shared cultural and religious ties with the Gorkha kingdom, would have been far less likely to betray their fellow Hindus and Nepali brethren. Their refusal to collaborate with the British invaders likely cost them the opportunity to become Gurkha soldiers.
Until 1914, the British had primarily recruited Gurungs and Magars into the Gurkha regiments. However, after witnessing the Limbus' willingness to betray both Nepal and Sikkim, the British came to see them as more reliable and malleable proxies that could be used against the other ethnic groups in the region. This is why the Rai Limbus, and not the Lepchas, Bhutias, Chettris, Brahmins, Newars or Tamangs, became the predominant recruits for the Gurkha forces.

Lepchas, Bhutias are the original inhabitants of Sikkim. They gave chance to Limbus who worked as servants during their rule. Slowly the Limbus began to displace Bhutias, Lepchas in some parts of sikkim. Then they brought rais from Southern Tibet and Nepal. These two ethnic groups displaced Bhutias and Lepchas and slowly there were riots that killed and burned the houses of lepchas. Pawan Chamling of Khotang gave so much pain to Bhutia and Lepcha people. Chamling people can even trace their origin to Northern Chinese tribe. But they plotted against the innocent Lepcha Bhutia and destroyed their culture in 25 year chamling rule.

Ppl in western Sikkim still largely speak Limbu as their first language… Heck even the Britishers classified us as “Aboriginal” the other one being the “Government of Sikkim”.
In fact even when you google- “Limbu People” you can literally see Yakha, Rai, “LEPCHA” and Dhimal (also known as terai Limbu) as “RELATED ETHNICITIES”.
Bro in fact- and I guess you already know this - the name Sikkim literally came from a Limbu word “Su-him” for the palace that the Chogyal built for his Limbu queen. There are literally chronicled documents of how Lepcha-Limbu armies helped the various Chogyals fight the Bhutanese, Tibetans rebellions etc.
Also there is literally a term called “Rong-Tsong/Chong” which literally means Lepcha-Limbu - as these two groups were considered as brethren. Please show me any other groups, besides the now-Lepcha-Bhutia, described in such ways in the given Geography/ Geographical area.
Also regarding Limbu’s so called “fake” association with Kirat identity - I think you need to get a bit of education regarding this topic as Rai-Limbu ppl are the textbook definition of “Kirat” in this particular geography . Dafaq man ..kuch bhi 😂..pls bro go read …😂.
Also, there is a term called “Ethnic Geography” please google it- and see where the ethnic geography of Limbu ppl spread. If you can read and write and have some ounce of common sense- and also if you can see and process images- you’d see that we reside in both eastern Nepal and west Sikkim and Darjeeling.
Also, if you didn’t know those were the earlier regions of Limbuwan. Pls go read/view.
And, Yes I totally accept that the Limbus were in back-foot in Sikkim - one of the main reasons being rejection of Buddhism as we had our own religion and many Buddhist converts were converted back to our shamanistic religion-called Yumaism, and yes there were many rebellions against the King as our power was slowly chipped out and due to suppression of our culture (this happened in Nepal as well) resulting in which Sikkim lost majority of its territories in the part of Limbuwan that now resides in Nepal- although it didn’t have much control of it anyways.
The point being- we were/are indigenous to this place. In fact, there are literally so many published articles talking about the indegeniety of the Limbu people to Sikkim please read!!
If still this doesn’t convince you then idk what will.😂
Anyways, I’m not trying to say that we’re special or sth. All I’m trying to say is that our history-culture is geographically linked to this land tooth-skin and bones (both eastern Nepal and Sikkim) along with our Lepcha brethren .
And no matter how many racist ppl like you or ur grumpy racist gramps try to deny or change it the truth will always come out.
Let me repeat again and clarify- Limbu people are aboriginal both of Nepal and Sikkim by right of history-ethnicity-geography. Period. And this is not to put others into bad light both our fellow Nepali and Sikkimese brothers and sisters.but it is what it is.
Still, Idk what’s wrong wd ppl ppl like you man spreading lies and shit about us… maybe some Lmbuni broke your heart or sth..😂..still I’d advise you to first please read, go places , search proper info before you talk shit about other ppl. Not tryna insult u or sth just educating and advising you.
Lastly there is a reason Lepcha-Limbu and Bhutia languages are taught till the masters level in SU. Also go check the news- “Sikkim government appeals for 8th schedule tag for Lepcha-Limbu and Bhutia”- abo indigenous na bha tha garne thyena hola ni haina ra?
And a small parting gift for you too- Go search the treaty of “Lho-Men-Tsong-Sum” ..anyways let be break that surprise for you - it’s the treaty between Bhutia-Lepcha-Limbu.

How Rai and Limbus Claim False Association with Rich Tribes to Legitimize Their Own False History
Throughout history, the Rai and Limbus communities have been known for their resourcefulness and adaptability in various regions of South Asia. However, there has been a growing concern that these communities have often engaged in fabricating associations with richer and more prosperous tribes such as the Newars, Lepchas, Bodos, Meches, Tharus, and others. This alleged fabrication is seen as an effort to legitimize their historical claims and to integrate more seamlessly into these regions. The complexities surrounding these claims raise significant questions about historical authenticity, ethnic identity, and inter-community relations.
Historical Background of Rai and Limbus
The Rai and Limbus communities trace their roots back to regions influenced by the Mongol expansions. Historical evidence suggests that they migrated from Sichuan, China, to Northern Tibet and eventually settled in parts of Nepal and Sikkim during the 13th century. Seeking refuge from the Mongol conquests, these groups were welcomed by the Sen Thakuris and the Lepcha tribe. Over time, they adapted to their new environments, forming unique cultural identities.
Despite their integration, the Rai and Limbus communities have faced challenges in asserting their legitimacy and historical roots in these new regions. This has led to efforts to fabricate connections with more affluent and historically established tribes.
The Quest for Legitimacy through Fabrication
One of the most significant accusations against the Rai and Limbus is their attempt to fabricate associations with the ancient Kirat people. This identity encompasses several indigenous groups of the Himalayan region, including the prosperous Newars, Lepchas, Bodos, Meches, and Tharus. By claiming a shared Kirat ancestry, the Rai and Limbus hope to embed themselves within the historical and cultural narratives of these regions.
      The Newar Connection
The Newars, an affluent community with a rich cultural heritage in the Kathmandu Valley, have been a prime target for these fabricated associations. The Newars' sophisticated urban culture and historical prominence make them an attractive ally for the Rai and Limbus. By claiming historical ties to the Newars, the Rai and Limbus seek to elevate their own status and justify their presence in Newar territories.
However, the Newars, with their distinct linguistic and cultural identity, have little in common with the migratory history of the Rai and Limbus. This lack of historical evidence supporting the connection has led to skepticism and tension within the Newar community itself.
Encroaching on Lepcha and Bhutia Land
In Sikkim and parts of West Bengal, the Lepchas, considered the original inhabitants, have a rich cultural heritage. The Rai and Limbus have sought to align themselves with the Lepchas by claiming a shared Kirat ancestry. This association is used to justify their migration into Lepcha territories and assert their rights over land and resources.
This fabricated connection has exacerbated conflicts between the Lepcha and Bhutia communities in India. The Bhutias, another significant ethnic group in Sikkim, have been drawn into disputes over land and heritage, partly fueled by the Rai and Limbus' claims. These actions have contributed to ethnic discord and instability in the region.
      Infiltrating Assam and Meghalaya
In Assam and Meghalaya, the Bodos, Meches, and other indigenous tribes have faced similar claims from the Rai and Limbus. By asserting a Kirat identity, the Rai and Limbus attempt to integrate into these regions and gain access to land and opportunities traditionally reserved for indigenous groups.
Recent ethnic violence in Assam, which has seen clashes between various tribal groups, has been partly fueled by the false claims and associations made by the Rai and Limbus. Their attempts to insert themselves into the socio-political fabric of Assam have led to increased competition for resources and heightened ethnic tensions.
The Role of the Khas and Tharus
In Nepal, the Khas Aryas and Tharus have also been drawn into the web of fabricated associations. The Rai and Limbus, by claiming a historical connection with these communities, seek to expand their territorial claims and secure a place within the broader socio-political landscape of Nepal.
The Tharus, with their unique cultural practices and historical ties to the Terai region, have found little in common with the Rai and Limbus. The Tharus, primarily of Indo-Aryan descent, have distinct cultural and linguistic identities that do not align with the Kirat narrative. This further underscores the opportunistic nature of the fabricated Kirat identity.
Furthermore, the fabricated associations have led to tensions between the Tharus and the Madhesis, another significant community in the Terai region. The Rai and Limbus' attempts to assert their presence have exacerbated existing conflicts over land and resources, further destabilizing the region.
      Consequences of Fabrication
The alleged fabrication of associations by the Rai and Limbus has significant implications for the regions they inhabit. These actions have led to increased competition for resources, heightened ethnic tensions, and challenges to the historical narratives of indigenous communities. The quest for legitimacy by the Rai and Limbus, while understandable from a socio-economic perspective, has often come at the expense of the established rights and identities of other tribes.
      Reevaluating Historical Narratives
In light of these fabrications, it is essential to reevaluate the historical narratives surrounding the Rai and Limbus. While their need for stability and prosperity is valid, their methods of claiming indigeneity through fabricated associations raise ethical and historical concerns. Accurate historical documentation and respect for the identities of established indigenous groups are crucial in addressing these issues.

In past pre historic period everyone migrated and came from elsewhere, but their present identity was created in modern Nepal, where once they had their own rule in their respective regions.

Recent ethnic tensions in Assam have been exacerbated by claims made by the Limbu community, asserting a separation from the Bodo people approximately 3000 years ago. This assertion has fueled historical disputes between the Bodo and Garo communities, intensifying tensions and leading to violence over contested historical narratives.
The Limbus, originally from Sichuan, China, and settling in East Nepal before migrating to India, have strategically adopted a fabricated Kirat identity to justify their presence in regions like Assam. Claiming a separation from the Bodo people millennia ago, they have encouraged one ethnic group to assert dominance over another, exacerbating longstanding grievances and historical animosities.
This manipulation of historical narratives has not only distorted authentic cultural histories but has also deepened mistrust and competition among indigenous tribal communities in Assam. By inciting tensions between the Bodo and Garo communities over their shared past, the Limbus have inadvertently contributed to violence and conflict, perpetuating a cycle of ethnic strife and social discord.
Addressing these complex issues requires a nuanced approach that acknowledges and respects the diverse identities and histories of all communities involved. Efforts to mitigate ethnic tensions must prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and inclusive policies that promote understanding and peaceful coexistence. It is crucial to challenge manipulations of history and identity that sow division and instead foster unity and mutual respect among diverse ethnic groups in Assam and beyond.

Agar lepcha nepali hoina vanay rai limbu, tamang, sherpa, chettri, bahun, thakali, pradhan, kami, damai, sharki, gurung, mangar, sunuwar, yakkha pani nepali hoina... Sabai ko afnu bhasa cha afnu culture ra shock nahunu jo aryans nepali ma cha unaharu pani sanskrit bolcha bahun haru mainly.. euta movie lai herayra kasari judge garnu huncha.. i am not oppressing on the lepchas to be nepali but just think deeply i had the same mentality as yours because we tamang have different language, different traditions but something has unified us.. yes indeed there are places where most ethnic people live in that very region, like the sherpa at namchi nepal, tamang at rasuwa jilla, subbas at west sikkim and illam and the lepchas at north sikkim.. but this particular diversity of races lives in this very region of bhutan, nepal sikkim and darjeeling.. that y when sikkim was about to be annexed the king of sikkim went to nepal and bhutan state the proposal to stay unified so that they can be strong.. we all are gorkhas, we are unified by this name in past we all had conflict with each other all the races now we are one we share our tradition culture with each other we marry each other we are totally mixed now.. i being a tamang marry a lepcha, chettri, subba and bhutia with ease but if they are bengali or mainland indian or even other north east tribe, i will think them as outsider.. if the lepcha is discriminated in the plains, we get angry because we know they are our own and i think the lepcha feels the same.. now may be in our blood as well we have mixed up... I know in every lepcha family they marry with tamang, bhutia, rai, limbu and other nepalese speaking people.. but when it comes to outside nepalese speaking they think them as outsider and they are mot even comfortable.. i have heard this saying when a rai, limbu, tamang, bhutia marries with other mainland indian, i have heard my lepchas friend saying hamro manchay euta ramro payeana ra madeshi sanga janu paryo.. i can give you more example how we have unified.. but see nepali is a community of brave people of hills who have different culture and tradition and each other have accepted them as their own and all have safeguarded their culture as well but have accepted and praised the others as well.. we are so comfortable with each other and we are unified.. when you go outside and meet this people you will have the feeling of strong bond even if you are living in west bengal, you will see bengali in banglore you will not have that feeling but if you see any lepcha the tamang, rai, limbu chettri, pradhan, sherpa will have the feeling of closeness.. hope you understand our unity..

Your harsh word might hit the sentiment of lepchas living there and they are the ethnic people of that very land and are the part of Nepali community and your selfish thought after getting the special status in sikkim have made you forget the greatest unification and being the part of the great gorkha and getting the entitlement of that.
