I had no idea Granny and Slendrina were made by the same dev. Gotta respect he turned what would be a ripoff into inspiration and his own thing, even with Slenderman is a character in the mythos.
If you'd tell my 2017 self that, i would not believe it, cause even for the mobile version of granny is more refined and complex than slendrina, i actually quite hated Slendrina games back then

At around 11 minutes you mention how fast Granny is. There's a legit Yokai in Japanese folklore with a handful of names, but the easiest one is "Turbo Granny"
@@THECrimsonFuckerAlucardHimself Turbo Granny in the original folklore is more benign than that, most of the time she's basically a passing hallucination you see when on a dark road at night in the mountains. Other legends do have her tailing you and trying to physically run you off the road.
“ This is ‘Granny’ you either know what it is already or you can figure it out pretty quickly. It's not the most abstract of things. You hide, you distract, you solve puzzles, you run away, you get concussed.” and here I am getting scared and being beat up by her.
One of the only people who I recall comparing Granny to a puppet combo game positively was infact John Wolfe. Which is kinda ironic as John is known for being pretty critical when it comes to games lol
You are spot on about SOOTH taking inspiration from Granny, lmao. In one of his Patron posts, Puppet Combo talks about taking direct inspiration from Granny, "It still follows the structure of Granny (limited days to escape) but with a bit of a twist and a pretty cool backstory and explanation for whats going on."
I'd like to add something that was inspired by Granny. The Roblox game Piggy, it has 13 BILLION visits, merch at Wallmart, some books, a Mario 64-like game, a steam game, an ARG, custom soundtrack & songs and an active community that still push fangames and animations daily after almost 5 years since it's initial release. (And it's still getting updated!) Also there is a collab with Dark Deception planned. Wild.

@thebaseandtriflingcreature174 oh, good to know. I liked both movies for different reasons, and usually when that happens it turns out that the sequel is mostly regarded as a complete and utter failure (like Cars 2), so I got a bit scared.
14:18 Also the fact that when Granny chases you as of the more RECENT update, you hear chase music whenever Granny spots you, and Spider-ma comes after you.
I genuinely don't understand why granny was/is so disliked, you mention that games that are easy for youger audiences tend to get that, but things like fnaf and poppy playtime are extremely popular and mascot horror was still on the rise when granny came out, i really think it should be consired one of the first ones to popularize the genre, especially considering it's a good game with actual love and care put behind it, a lot of the popular mascot horror games of now really can't say that and yet are more popular. I think people are judging this game too hard because it's originally made for mobile, which is frankly just sad, imagine being DVloper, putting hours and hours into this project you're passionate about, make a genuinely good product, only for it to get hated and not given a fair chance just because of the platform you chose to release it in
I do think it being a mobile game played a part in it, but also I think the graphics contributed to some of the hate. Most of the Slendrina games (including Granny in its early days), although competent, are not that visually appealing. Even though DVloper has improved massively, the graphics have always been relatively primitive. A beautifully modelled and textured environment lends itself to more positive first impressions than a somewhat-shoddily textured mobile game with amateur character animation. That's the first thing you see, and unless you actually play the game, that's all you'll ever see. The unpolished graphics made the game look like a cheap knock-off rather than a unique experience, at least from my perspective. Granny is decently designed and is frankly underrated.
@MeemahSN that's even more sad ngl, those games always seemed more stylized to me rather than fully trying for realism, which isn't helped by the limitations of having to be on a phone, i say this because the PC version, while improving the graphics, doesn't really go full realism. I feel like DVloper has a style of graphics that Just doesn't gel with the majority like puppet-combo
I think the most hated part isn't the game itself, but its many clones. Stuff like Evil Teacher and the million other copy and paste games made any game in this niche guaranteed to face a lot of hate. Honestly I think that the Ice Scream series is pretty good for a mobile mascot horror franchise but it also gets that label because it's similar to Granny. This is not the only decent/good game to be treated like this, unfortunately.
I’ve always found Granny to be a genuinely fun and interesting game, so super glad to see it get covered here! Never quite thought of how Granny could’ve influenced so many other games either, so that’s an awesome observation! Great work!
i can understand how you feel at the end there, i remember shitting bricks when i first stumbled upon SCP, telling my dad i think it's real, having real names and redacted data, feeling like I'm doing something illegal by just reading it. Now everybody is talking about it as if it's a "fandom" when to me it used to be just something so elusive and nerve-wracking, when the internet wasn't really something you understood and stepping in it feels like swimming in the ocean hoping nothing is going to eat you alive. At the end of the day i thought i just outgrew it. But... It's always a treat though, when some one brought it up. Especially with something that's underappreciated. Seeing something you love being appreciated by someone who wasn't there at the time is actually kind of cathartic. Like you did with granny. Love your videos btw, perfect combination between heart and facts.
i love that aspect of the SCP foundation, where it's easy to immerse yourself in the belief it exists, and that what you're doing is toeing the line of many things.
Back when the line was really blurry with the Slenderman mythos, and a lot of people were still talking about it like it was real, I had managed to convince myself I had stumbled upon a genuine anomaly. I think a part of me kept believing right up until I saw a snippet of an interview with the guys who made Marble Hornets, which up to that point I had no concept for what an ARG even was or would become. I still very much hope to one day (for realsies) find evidence of some sort of X-factor type stuff, so learning definitively, once-and-for-all, the origins of it and The Rake genuinely took the wind out of my sails a bit. After that I kinda got angry because of how many people for literal years kept trying to say they were real to grift for clout, or going, "tulpa therefor real" (ignoring the fact that tulpas would 100% mean Santa Claus is real, and at that point I think parents would start getting a bit suspicious of the random gifts they never bought showing up under the tree).
I've always loved the Granny franchise, the first game has a type of horror I've never seen anywhere else which I could only describe as "Old person house horror" It reminds me of the old country house my grandfather used to have, and how scary I found sleeping there when I was a kid. It's sort of a weaponized nostalgia/childhood fear in a way I don't see often.
Yeah Granny always felt more relatable in that sense than mascot horror did. I don't remember ever being scared of mascots past the age of 5, but old houses are universally creepy.

A few months ago, I was nostalgic about Granny and i decided to search it up. I was heartbroken to find only negative reviews. They dissect Granny's fun aspects and critically analyse it. Watching this video made me happy that there's appreciation for this game. I don't mind the game dying. I just want it to be remembered as a good thing. Granny is perfect because it doesn't try to be anything it isn't. It takes itself seriously when it should, and becomes light hearted when it should. I hope more people follow suit and praise Granny for what it is. Im tired of all the hate for a game that was made out of love and not out of need for money. Looking at you, Poppy playtime.
Granny is genuinely such a well put together game, but the life of it is lived on through videos like this, I found myself internally monologuing about all the things you reminded me of, between weird roleplays someone made in Granny using mods, or back when Granny was so hype a plush was officially made of her. I remembered way back when there was only one escape route and the only weapon was the tranquilizers, it made me download Granny and actually give it another go with all the new content. Your little journalistic work has brought another spike into the life of Granny, one which I’m sure we’ll see again in a couple years or so. For what an entire man did with his life, it’s sad it only lives a little in ours, but it shaped so many things that can’t be overstated. Great video, please do make another one on the sequels, even if you’re probably getting a little tired of talking about this all.
@@noranizaazmi6523 Thank you, I’m told I am a phenomenal writer, partly how I met my girlfriend in fact. And I should also give you props for using the word ‘maestro’, I had to look back at your comment just to know how to spell it.
You know, you've succesfully gotten me to reevaluate my opinion of mascot horror. While in the past i used to despise it for being childlike, now i hate it for its exploitative nature; see garten of banban having a merch store seconds aftet its release and the fucking poppy playtime nfts. The difference between stuff like Granny and BanBan is that Granny at least tries. It, while flawed, is earnest in its attempts to make horror accesible, instead of being slop.
Entirely unrelated and unpromted rant, but Mascot horror isnt really a genre in my opinion. The only thing games like bendy and fnaf have in common is child-friendly characters twisted into something evil, but if that is what makes something a mascot horror, then Chucky is mascot horror.
@@johnvanjohn825 People jump too often in calling styles of gaming as "genres", soulslike is another example, is not a genre, is just an style of gameplay for action rpg games, for me the same apply to Metroidvania, immersive sims, tatical fps etc etc, these are not genres in my opinion, only styles of gameplay.
@@TheDoc_K2 I think an genre is a mix of the style, thematic and presentation. First Person Shooter for example is a mix of the presentation of first person with the gameplay of a shooter, also you can also include something else here as thematic like is old school style fps, or a CoD style FPS.
"What the hell is Slendrina" It was the first video I saw on your channel. Since then, I've been hoping that maybe you could come up with a video about Granny, and you did. thank you very much! this is so cool!!!
I guess one of the better things that come up with Granny being accommodating to younger audiences is that, since it is a horror game, it would naturally want to show some tough things, but due to the prior boundary, it does them in very creative ways! We can absolutely utilize Frozen Granny as an example because her inner flesh, seeable in 18:02, would definitely be exposed more shockingly if it had appeared in another game, yet since what we possess is a developer who is trying to produce a lighter experience, we end up with this relatively silly though unsettling texture, with her internal body encountering itself being shown to the outer world in an interesting, funny, worrying and uncanny form, where the look of it is not detailed enough for it to be in need of being censured for a TH-cam video in any kind of way, but it still is detailed enough for us to put these visuals that we observe in our heads while completely understanding how messed up they are, lol. This is something that Granny was able to pull off with excellency!
Dude same did you ever watch the critikal video where he plays the game and the entire comment section is shitting on the game like it should be compared to a triple A release that always pissed me off for a free mobile game it's not that bad
@extentnearby6139 yeah definitely, that's just kinda stupid at this point. Like jeez, Granny had ONE dev, maybe a small team at most, but never the size of a triple A studio, why butcher it down? Appreciate what it's done for it's market, don't compare it to bigger games.
i really appreciate how genuine you are about reviewing these games. normally any other youtuber would be constantly snide and ironic about talking about a game like this but hearing you genuinely praise the stuff in it is very happy to hear :D
I remember watching video about the WW2 velociraptor game. Been some years since I saw so memory is a bit foggy, but it was apparently by college students for a thing and when it became popular, they intended to make an expanded version with a lot weirder shit like more dinosaurs, gas mask ghosts, and giant metal grubs being used as tanks. Meant to comment on how war doesn't make sense I think, you're in the situation, but it wouldn't have ever been explained how that situation came to be. I'll have to find it again, but great job on the video, really liked the Slendrina one too.
I’m surprised you didn’t bring up Thief 1 or 2 when talking about Granny’s difficulty settings. Playing either game in expert for a second playthrough feels like a New Game Plus.
I loved Granny when I was younger, and I still love it today; So thanks for making a really good video essay on it, as you said there aren't enough of these. I also completely agree in Puppet Combos games emulating Granny in ways, and The Bunker being a fantastic continuation of Granny's design language. But there is one funny thing that I would like to alert you to; I was a Roblox kid, and I remember a really weird thing happening. A game by the name of Piggy came out, Piggy starting off as being a literal Granny copy, the first level being nigh identical to the original Granny house; But here's where it gets funny, Piggy's character's are all from Peppa Pig, and it ended up being a incredibly successful Roblox game. Hell I would say it was on par with the original popularity of Granny! Roblox does these events with highlighted games, and for 3 straight events Piggy was in there! It ended up going on a weird lore trip, with a massive amount of random addition character's based of those from Peppa Pig. What I find interesting about that, is although Piggy only came out only a fairly short time after Granny it captured a whole new wave of kids, youtubers, lore, etc. And that most of those youtubers also played Granny, overall I just find it interesting on how much of an impact Granny has made in the world of video game horror. And in the case of Piggy, how much a few short year's can change the eyes of originality. If your interested Piggy came out in 2020 has 13 Billion visits and currently has 13 thousand players. Granny will live on forever it seems.
I've not heard of Piggy before - but now I'm interested! I've been putting together a list of roblox horror games that I should check out, and that's definitely going on it :)
It's funny how far apart in terms of quality roblox horror games can be. Some times, you'll get absolute trash like weird strict dad, survive freddy fazbear, or evil noob survive. Other times, you'll get somthing simple, yet fun, like camping, Piggy, saktka51, and the scary elevator. And then you'll somtimes get absolute masterpieces like Sonic.exe the disaster, Doors, and Pressure.
I personally LOVE the spider dungeon part of the game. I like it’s atmosphere and gameplay being completely different from the rest of the house on top of being required. You spend maybe 20-30 minutes avoiding Granny and distracting her with sounds and collecting puzzle items, and suddenly you’re in a new environment where that gameplay does NOT apply, and you need to adapt to a new threat in order to win the game. The spider dungeon forced me to learn how to peek around corners, which I don’t really have to do in the rest of the house. I think it’s my favorite part of the game, actually.
Granny was one of those games I kept coming back to TH-cam over the years and looking up play throughs for. Never felt it was anything less than entertaining.
The simple fact that this video has an opinion of its own rather than repeating the same thing about it being a bad game automatically makes it good. Granny has its flaws, but overall it's still an indie game that deserves respect for what it is. So yeah, good video and I'll definitely stick around to watch more of these, keep up the good work!

You're right though, it IS different. It DOES show instead of telling, which is not only a mice change of pace, but made me overlook just how much granny is playing with you... like the fact that she could actually bend down the whole time but just chose not to??? That's wild as shit I love it!! Also that's CHILLING to imagine she's cool with letting some random loose in her house with weapons just for the thrill of the hunt... adds a whole new layer of creepy!!
11:00 youre KINDA wrong, because i played this game through EVERY update the garage wasnt added like in early versions, but when DVloper added the garage, it didn't have its own escape route, so the wall was actually a wall and not a cardboard abomination of sealing your actual garage door during a flash flood (really, the car wasnt even supposed to be working back then and this whole room was only useful for the sauna) but when the dev (no pun intented) saw that people WANTED this escape route, he added it, but then aswell started to add more endings

One of the only people who I recall comparing Granny to a puppet combo game positively was infact John Wolfe.
Which is kinda ironic as John is known for being pretty critical when it comes to games lol
I've always liked John's takes on games - he's often very fair (even if he can also be very harsh at times hehe)
It's like they saw the alpha of Hello Neighbor and thought, "We could do this but better" which is why I adore Granny so much.
Granny is made by one guy and hello neighbor is made by a team of people yet i still like the granny series more.
Wild.

Mainly because it was a free mobile game
I think the most hated part isn't the game itself, but its many clones. Stuff like Evil Teacher and the million other copy and paste games made any game in this niche guaranteed to face a lot of hate. Honestly I think that the Ice Scream series is pretty good for a mobile mascot horror franchise but it also gets that label because it's similar to Granny. This is not the only decent/good game to be treated like this, unfortunately.
Because gamers have a stick up their 4ss. Any time anything is on mobile they automatically decide it's completely garbage
“But she’s not invinsible, so you can still see her.”

I’ve always found Granny to be a genuinely fun and interesting game, so super glad to see it get covered here!

i can understand how you feel at the end there, i remember shitting bricks when i first stumbled upon SCP, telling my dad i think it's real, having real names and redacted data, feeling like I'm doing something illegal by just reading it.
I agree. Nicely worded.
i love that aspect of the SCP foundation, where it's easy to immerse yourself in the belief it exists, and that what you're doing is toeing the line of many things.

Liked and subscribed! The video is of extremely high quality
Dude, you’re a literal word maestro. Props!
@@noranizaazmi6523 Thank you, I’m told I am a phenomenal writer, partly how I met my girlfriend in fact. The term "Grannylike" is so absurdly hilarious
@@CoracaoAcidental98 I mean, what's a genre if not a style of gameplay?
First-Person-Shooter is a genre, because it defines the game I'm about to buy.
@@TheDoc_K2 I think an genre is a mix of the style, thematic and presentation.

THE GRANNY VIDEO AAAA
Granny was a part of my childhood and I love it even nowdays, and I think this review gives it justice!
