    Really great work to see. I salvaged about ten hand hewn beams out of an old barn 30 years ago. My parents were building their house in North Georgia at the time. I brought my Dad the beams and he used them for his porch posts. We left all the pegs and joints in them. They look great still.

    That's what you call "risk=reward" hit a few nails, but the lumber you get is remarkable. Good video.

    I'm an old man now but when I was a little kid my Dad built an extra bedroom to the back of the house. The wood was heart pine from a one room schoolhouse built in the late 1800s.
    The wood was so hard he had to lube the nails with a bar of soap to get them to penetrate without bending.
    It's still standing today.

    The first video I posted on TH-cam was me milling heart pine boards from a large industrial beam, also full of nails. I have found that a combination of metal detector and a small rare earth magnet suspended like a pendulum from a string is an excellent way of pin pointing metal location even under the surface. As far as nail removal, a crescent 19" #56 slide hammer nail remover works great with minimal damage to the wood. Crescent also makes a nail pulling pliers which also works excellent. That heart pine smells great doesn't it!

    I use orange/citrus water based cleaner diluted into the tank. I've had good luck keeping the blades clean even with pitchy pine. About 1-2 pints per tank of water.
    Keep up the great channel!

    Your reputation must be growing. That's a compliment to be asked to cut those logs. Good work habits will keep you busy. Just make sure you charge a decent price for your work. Wear and tear on your mill, blades and your time is worth something. Good Job.

  • @TxStang
    @TxStang 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Around where I live in Texas there are only a couple of places within 100 miles that will cut reclaimed beams , The ones that do charge 100.00 for each blade they have to change on top of the milling price . Usually they will change a blade after every beam that they hit any metal on and the price can skyrocket fast .

    The gentleman was using the wrong end of the mini pry to remove the nails - you use the short end as it will dig deeper, and it has a face to allow striking with a hammer. Also, diagonal cut pliers do an excellent job of gripping and pulling out embedded nails. Given the expense of the equipment I see on these videos having a few vise grips and two wand metal detectors would be a wise investment.

    I made furniture out of very similar wood. Run one piece through the sander, change the paper. Cleaned it with Simple Green. Not sure it would work in your lube system. Some of mine had rings so tight had to use a magnifying glass to count them. 50 or more to the inch.

  • @barrystrachan6340
    @barrystrachan6340 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So that log must have been very old when it was made into a beam. Plus, how long has it been a beam. I would really be interested in an estimate of the year the parent tree was cut down.

    Wow! I would have that thought after 150 years that it would have dried to the point that gum build up would not have been a problem. So I guess "heart pine" is what I always heard described as "fat lighter" wood which was notorious for burning down houses. So do you normally use diesel fuel for cutting green pine wood?

    The old farm house I grew up in has pine in it just like that and probably just as old. My great grandfather had the house built. My parents live there now. My grandfather said that when he was a boy forest pine as he called it, long leaf pine I guess, was everywhere here in central NC I can still find stumps from all those years ago. They are good for splitting up for fat pine kindling. Good video!

    If that lumber was so rich in resin I'd save all that saw dust. Get as many empty dip cans as you can lay your hands on and pack them full of that resin rich sawdust and you could sell it to folks into the bushcraft thing as a fire starter.
