The Australian police used, and I understand still use, the Land Cruiser BJ extensively. The BJ77 hardtop is used by the police rescue and special services teams in metropolitan areas and both 73s and 77s are used as patrol vehicles in rural areas a lot too. Incredibly tough vehicles and in areas where rust is less of an issue they are almost unkillable as they are mechanically extremely simple so very easy to repair and also extremely mechanically robust so they don't need repairing very often. A family friend who lives "near" Alice Springs (near in Australian terms means about a days drive away) has an '85 BJ73 hard top which he has had since new that has done well over 500,000 kilometres and the engine, gearbox and axles have never needed to be taken apart. Most of those kms have been done in the bush rather than on what pass for roads in that part of Oz. To put it into perspective he's just bought his fifth Ford Falcon station wagon road car in the same time period. They're not fast, 80 km/h is about the most you'd want to cruise at on the road as they get very loud and very bouncy above that speed but they're pretty economical for a serious 4x4 at that sort of speed and the engine is an absolute torque monster which helps make them incredibly competent off-road even in totally standard form. Really these are the direct Japanese equivalent to a Land-Rover from before they tried to go posh and lifestyle, and with a lot more reliability built in. Sadly we never got the FJ and BJ as official new vehicles in the UK though a lot have been imported from Japan and also from mainland Europe (where they were sold in left-hand drive form, a plausible theory I've heard many times is that Toyota couldn't produce enough right-hand drive FJ and BJ vehicles to satisfy the market in the UK, Australia and Japan so the UK dipped out, though I've also heard that they couldn't be recorded as commercial vehicles in the UK and therefore the purchase tax would have made the prices uncompetitive) and they are highly valued in the UK. They can, however, be as rust-prone as the previous generation in colder, wetter and more rusty climates if they're not thoroughly and carefully rust protected as the factory rust proofing was minimal to say the least...

hi derek. the 70 series did not stop production in 2015. maybe sales were halted in japan in that year but its still for sale in AUS and middle east afaik

      Very cool.
I am not sure if they stopped here. 2015 was a special limited year and I have not seen newer ones at auction. Maybe owners just don't want to sell them. I know I wouldn't.

Hi Derek I just got this land cruiser Bj74 FRP top. I am a 4x4 enthusiast and I love it especially the solid axle which makes this cruiser unbreakable. Apparently mine has changed engine to 1kz 3.0 turbo diesel a very strong engine to be honest. Thank you all your reviews with Bj74 which makes me decide to get this very rare and reliable land Cruiser. Watching from Philippines

Land Cruisers/Toyota Diesels are the best (other than the 2LTE)... I as well am trying to talk my wife into an LC 80... Tho she is more interested in the new Mazda diesel CX5 coming to the US later this year... she also does not like the idea of having vehicles for specific things... I did talk her into letting me sell 2 3.4L Tacomas to find a LN107 Hilux 3L with you guys! I love my wife.

the stock winch runs off the drive shaft? wow. Thats impressive. the car looks gorgeous now but i feel like id want to get the winch back on it.

An electric winch yes, but PTO winches (which is what that kind of winch is called), were done away with for a reason. Trickier to control, more complex, etc.

Great review, as always ! .........reading between the lines, I'd guess that whoever had this vehicle before took off the much wider front bumper (with the fitted winch) to make it more compatible for off-road 4x4'ing, .......rock-sliders, etc.

Fuck the lift , get a cleaner one stock with no rust and a better interior for similar price ! Weigh up a FULL de-rust professional price VS a lift kit ... Good luck , I wouldn't buy this particular one... They also come with a 5 cylinder 3.5 , I just bought the 1993 4 door , twice as clean as this...
