  • Made in the early 1960s and featuring actor Jack Webb, who served with the U.S. Marine Corps, this film presents the Armed Forces Code of Conduct, explaining each article and what each means to those in the Armed Services. The film features a re-enactment of a wartime military prison, with U.S. soldiers being held captive by enemies intent on breaking their morale, and extracting valuable information from them.
THIS IS THE CODE OF CONDUCT FOR THE U. S. FIGHTING MAN
    1. I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.
    2. I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender my men while they still have the means to resist.
    3. If I am captured, I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.
    4. If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information, or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way.
    5. When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am bound to give only name, rank, service number and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause.
    6. I will never forget that I am an American fighting man, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.
Note: Prior to the Vietnam Conflict, violation of any of the above code elements could result in trial by court-martial. After learning of the atrocities inflicted on our personnel held prisoner in that action, it was determined that requiring strict compliance to such a demanding code was not always possible. It should stand as a guide to personal conduct but enforcement as a point of law is questionable.

My father saw this film when he was in Boot Camp at Great Lakes, IL, in the fall of 1960. He has referred to it many times. I’m glad I was able to find it for him, to view again, 63 years later. My father is a Plank Owner of the USS Enterprise-CVN 65. He’s very proud of that. Thank you for posting the film!

Holds up well even after 50 years. I think I saw this in basic training in 1965.

PeriscopeFilm........Huge Respect to the man. I have not seen his Marine Corps service record. I've researched and found that he washed out from The U.S.A.A.F and was sole provider for his family, and was on the home-front during WWII, is this not correct, please share. Semper Fi !!!

"Washed-out" is a strong phrase for not passing an eye exam. He was, however to become a commissioned Army officer in another capacity; never was a Marine, however.

If you’re saying these facts about Jack Webb’s war record are incorrect, then you need to offer compelling evidence to support your assertion. I mean Wikipedia says those facts are true. I know Wikipedia has a reputation for being unreliable, but until I see contradicting evidence from another source imma go with Wikipedia. (Americae pugna sicut infantem puellas!!)

Webb never served as a Marine, not sure why it says he did. He played a Marine DI but served briefly in the Army Air Force in WW II.

Can't we have Webb for a President or something?

You can see he is not just making a propaganda film - he means it, and believes it.
With a few slight changes for the situation, I bet the US volunteers in Ukraine are following this. A lot of them will have learned it anyway.

I read another approach of the communists is to get the prisoners in a group and have them 'confess' their problems or others's problems. ... Sounds like taking the 5th is a good idea all around.

Familiarity breeds contempt. When the American POWs made “confessions “ about themselves and partook in “rap” sessions, everything from politics, religion sexual matters and personality traits were discussed. The POWs became suspicious of one another and were reluctant to unite together while in captivity.

"Prisoners of war have more power than they know". That's why in Iraq and Afghanistan britain and America refused to recognise captured enemies as POW's.

Here’s Jack web, talking like a war hero about how to follow “the code” and maybe die in the process. Well, let’s look at Jack Webb’s service record for a moment.…
“During World War II, Webb enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, but he "washed out" of flight training. He later received a hardship discharge because he was the primary financial support for both his mother and grandmother” Wikipedia
With a service record like that, he’s got a nerve standing there like a big man telling soldiers what to do.
