One of many survival films made during WWII, Castaway shows simple skills that can be used in the event of an emergency. Reel 1 (featured here) shows how to survive a bail-out from an aircraft over the ocean, inflation of a life raft, and navigation to a safe harbor. Along the way are lessons about distilling water and shark repellant. Reel 2 shows survival on a tropical island typical of those found in the Pacific Theater of the war.
Produced by Willard Pictures for the Bureau of Aeronautics in 1944, “Castaway” is a black-and-white film that opens with the sounds of aerial dogfight and a pilot parachuting from his aircraft. “You gave ‘em a big dose of good ol’ American lead. Then that Jap sneaked up and got you from behind,” a voice-over explains at mark 00:45. Now that pilot is headed for the water, “to set up housekeeping in the long, green drink.”
What follows is a dramatic “How To” for any World War II pilot who found himself unfortunate enough to have been shot down. After safely landing in the water, our pilot recalls how to properly inflate his life raft and climbs in (as the narrator chastises his technique and reminds the pilot - and the audience - of the proper way to enter a raft. The majority of the film is set on the water, and at mark 04:45 the stranded pilot begins to take inventory of his survival kit. After consulting the kit’s map at mark 06:15 and trying to calculate his position, our pilot attempts to head for land but a shift in the wind direction stymies his plan and he decides to rest.
Morning comes at mark 08:20, and the pilot must contend with sunburn, a parched throat, hunger, and seemingly diminishing chances of rescue. “But there’s food and drink in the ocean,” the narrator reminds us at mark 11:55. “Try that first and keep the rations as a last resort. A fishing expedition proves successful and at mark 14:13 the downed pilot is reminded that the meat will provide nutrition and the fish juice will save his water supply. The sound of an aircraft lifts his spirits at mark 18:45 as he breaks out a sea marker from his kit but it was an unsuccessful attempt (a splice conceals the subsequent events) and at mark 19:00 our pilot is in the middle of stormy seas as a storm passes - only to have a wave tip over his raft and he loses some of his supplies. The site of a dry island at mark 21:19 gives him renewed hope and he eventually comes ashore and a search for fresh water begins.

The amount of narrator sarcasm and sass in these survival training videos is amazing.
It's supposed to be the internal dialogue that will enable a man to survive. Whether it works or not, I don't know and hope I never have to find out. It doesn't seem realistic because he never thinks of his demise, at least not aloud!

Consider the audience. The makers needed to keep the attention of the young men who might find this information a matter of life or death, so add some sass. Makes sense.

That was the attitude that saved lives. Think of the consequences or else.
That style of instruction was called negative reinforcement and if used correctly the students will remember most of the lessons.
The I told you so was because they did. Didn't pay attention, it's your life buddy. No skin off my ass. Today's aviators carry a satchel with them that I'm sure could hold some tennis shoes, a .22 revolver, and a flop hat.

One of my relatives served in the South Pacific aboard a B-24. He told me being stranded at sea was his worst fear.

When I was in Army basic training in 1964, we saw a number of these
training films, which I think, were 'holdovers'from WWII! If you looked
closely, you could see some recognizable actors in them, who were
completing their military service, safe at home in Hollywood!
The Chameleon in the Camouflage one sounded like George Carlin.
Then you had Jimmy Stewart, flying combat missions over Germany in a bomber.

The sass of that narrator is actually quite similar to one of my instructors when I went through Basic SF Course in the Austrian Jagdkommando back in the late 90ies - only that our DS also liked to spice things up with dry humour which he dealt with a perfectly straight face (and dropped the occasional saucy one-liner which probably wouldn't have been considered to be acceptable in 1940ies armed forces educational films).
Well, we students loved him for his no-nonsense and laid-back, but very strict attitude (although we sometimes did also briefly hate him when he put us through extreme challenges, but we also acknowlegded that they were necessary), and after I became a fully qualified SF team member, I had the luck to serve alongside him in the same team.
And when The Powers That Be (in their infinite wisdom, of course) chose me to become team leader two years later (because our old boss rightfully decided to politely bow out from serving on the front line in his late fourties and leave the game to younger folks), he first sincerely congratulated me when we had a few brews to celebrate my promotion, and then told me in his truly unique tongue-in-cheek style: "okay, laddie, don't you ever forget: your primary job now is to _not_ put your old instructor to shame, so do your job well" (which I did according to my teammates, so I'm safe). :-)
So as that bloke was a lifer, he retired at the age of 65 a few years ago (I myself left the armed forces as an OR-7 after twelve years of service), moved back to his hometown (because he inherited his parents' house which he grew up in and didn't want to sell) which is close to the city I live now, which means we still meet regularily to enjoy a few pints and chew the fat.
And I still love that bloke, also because when I graduated from nurse school in 2013 (yes, I'm a late bloomer in that trade because I got my nursing degree at the tender age of 41), he told me the exact same thing which I thought when I became a nursing student: "So, now you decided that _saving_ lifes makes more sense than _taking_ them? I honestly can't fault you for that, laddie - in fact, I sincerely think that you did make the right choice and profoundly understood one of the basic lessons which I hoped to drill into you young SF operators in larval stage about thirty years ago".
And that's why I think that old man not only has been an exceptional SF operator and professional soldier during his active service, but is also a true erudite.

For your real lifers, this was a way to give men confidence. They all feared being stranded in the ocean. It's been a proven time and time again that psychology that is positive is 95% of the battle. We all know this is old school, but the point is don't panic try to survive. It may be dated but effective.

@@drops2cents260 Yeah, best to sip not chug the hard stuff anyway. What kind of vodka? Do you just squeeze lemon juice over vodka and ice or what? I bartended in college. My margaritas were locally famous. I just copied one I had in a sketchy af bar in Mexico. Start with heavy ice, then real fresh lime juice, silver tequila, and the big secret is real *powdered* sugar, not a syrup. Shake the shit out of it and pour in an empty glass, no extra ice. None of that blended slurpee bullshit. That margarita and a couple other secret reciple drinks I had literally put me through college.
When you're going down in a parachute over the ocean like that it can sometimes be hard to judge you're altitude before you hit the water because you're perception can easily get skewed

@@JesuslovesRudy The angle between the horizon and the surface of the water would be indistinguishable between 50ft or 10ft. And the water looks very similar at those heights. I think that's why the narrator advises that you wait until your feet touch the water.

I read a book called the raft. It was about a crew from a torpedo plane that ran out of fuel because they were lost and under orders for radio silence. Seems like they were adrift for around 30 days. The raft is on display at naval aviation museum in Pensacola Pensacola FL.

Damn that’s crazy if it’s true. And to the guy who said “and?” Imagine being in one hell of a battle with casualties in both sides shooting down planes and being bombed then your ship sinks and first you half to get far enough away from the ship (probably by swimming under water) cause the surface of the water is literally on fire. So first you see your fellow soldiers being shot and bombed on by planes then you see them being burnt alive while trying to swim away cause of the burning oil slick. Then floating in the middle of the ocean for FOUR DAYS while sharks eat everyone around you always wondering if you were gonna be the next one to get your legs chomped off. They say some of the sharks ate cause they were hungry but some killed just for fun or out of curiosity. It was literally the deadliest shark attack in history. Also everyone around you is going insane and are delirious due to the salt water ingestion the scorching hot sun lack of food and water. They did not have time to send a distress signal so they had no idea when or if they would be rescued and who knows if some zeros are gonna drop by and shoot you up. I don’t think it’s humanly possible to even imagine what that would feel like. And you say “and?”. This is a story of immense survival and human fortitude that every person alive should know. If my barbers eighth cousin four times removed was there I would tell people. Imagine waking up and saying “hey” to your friend next to you (that you were just talking to a couple hours before) just to notice that his legs had been eaten by sharks and now he’s dead and sinking to the depths of the ocean. I’m can go on and on (and I think I kinda did) but it is an amazing story. And to be there and have experienced it? And? And? AND?! Pffft

It is more like 3 days with no water.
Rain saved a lot of downed pilots.
The best that you can do, is to pray for rain.
The time a person can survive without water varies a lot. The record is 18 days. Inactive in a comfortable environment an adult can live a week or more. Paddling a boat wearing a flight suit in the south Pacific, three days would be lucky.
Praying. Because it's better than nothing. Oh, wait, it IS doing nothing!
And after four hours of paddling in circles, the Sub assigned to the area to pick up aircrew decides to surface
as XO had won the sweepstake on 'how far the flyboy will paddle'......
Now adays there enough plastic floating in the oceans , for him to build a ship. Then sail for home.
Or just get out of the raft and walk home.

Lived in New Guinea 20 yrs 60's to late 70's. I'd accompany dad on hunting trips along the remote coastal plains, up into the surrounding slightly wooded mountain ranges. One time we found a downed American aircraft. Not sure what type it was as hit side of small hill & exploaded. No vegetation grew around the impacted area, bits of aircraft stewn everywhere. Tail section was back few hundred meters. Reckon plane came down to land, tops of trees ripped both wings & tail part section from main body. Looked like there was a large machine gun in the front section. We removed 3 X 30 cal Browning machine guns from the bent & twisted wreck. Remember there were thousands bullets everywhere. Some had exploded, most were alive, still attached to each other in links. I knew the craft was American , because name Browning was stamped on the side of the machine guns. Left the machine guns behind when we moved back to Australia in 78.

Smoker or not: Cigarettes have been valued as a kind of currency, when it came to interacting with foreigners. Especially when it came to American cigarettes. A pack of Camels or Luckies could buy you something if you needed it almost everywhere in the world back then. While some dollar bills would have been as good as worthless in hostile countries like Germany or Japan during the war. So, putting some cigs into their survival packs, was not solely meant to provide them with something to smoke. It could indeed become a life saving item, in case you had to interact with locals. Glad I could help.
My buddy has an old boat that was his grandfather's weekend camper/fisher in his pole barn and in the cabin we found an old army air corps liferaft medical kit. Pretty bad shape but it had everything u would need including some old dried morphine tubes with needles attached, burn ointment, bandages, glass bottles without labels and stuff like that, very interesting old machete looking knife too. Those pilots were some brave guys for sure.
One must remember, this narrator was speaking to young kids.

I grew up in Key West with the ocean being my backyard. Hard to imagine a young man ripped right out of the center of the US maybe some farm and dropped right in the middle of a deep blue ocean with no land in sight. Terrifying. I once tried to catch a fish with a hand line and failed for 3 days so I knew this guy was going to be ok when he did it in a few minutes.
The Ensign sure has long arms if he can dig and reach 6' down for water!

Old school 1940's thru the 1970's trading films are fun to watch. Most of the gear/equipment and methods are outdated and sometimes laughable by todays standards but this is what they had at the time and it's historical.

In the Dictionary of American Slang under "Best-Case Scenario" you'll find this story. Shot-down but relatively unscathed, all equipment intact, mostly fair weather, and land nearby that's inhabited by friendlies who understand pidgin English and have communications within walking distance.
The norm was probably more like: Shot down and wounded by enemy fire, some equipment damaged by water or even bullets, rough seas, and no land within reachable distance. Plus sharks.
If no one saw you bail out and noted your position, you'd be in big trouble. After Midway, even though the exact area of various engagements was known, some downed pilots were in the water for up to 12 days. Floating in the middle of the Pacific, without rescuers knowing precisely where to look, you were probably better off drowning yourself rather than dying slowly of thirst or exposure.
This is a very sad truth!
At least you had a chance - however muninum that chance might be.
These 'training films' were basically moral boosters..."It'll still be OKAY if ya' get shot down!! Just remember these tips and you'll be back in the fight in no time!!". I was honestly waiting for hula skirted 'native' girls to greet him at the beach!

There was a Philippine fisherman that floated in a huge cooler after their boat went down. Floated for something crazy like 75-100 days.

Wow! Things have really changed in ocean survival training. This squib is not too bright. He's his own worst punisher. Fun flick, however.
The idea was that even if this idiot squib can do it, the real pilots could as well- because “we wouldn’t hire idiots to do man’s work” was the mindset. “Show them the baseline, and all they can do is succeed”

The military did restrict solders who got a sexual social disease. All passes off base denied until testing negative after treatment. Kind of a quarantine I guess.
