Before I even clicked on this video I was thinking of Glencoe. The scale and stark beauty of that part of my country will never leave me. I was in my early 20's when we stopped there on the way to Glenfinnan. Never felt more connected to my country.

I have just come back from five wonderful days in Scotland. I have been to Scotland many times and even served there in the Royal Navy. I've spent virtually all that time in Fife and Edinburgh (the most beautiful city on earth IMO). This time we drove from the West Midlands in England to Inverness with an overnight stop in Fort William. The drive from Fort William to Inverness was the most incredible experience. Glencoe was stunning, l was awestruck with its beauty. The drive along Loch Ness was equally amazing. I have always had an affinity with Scotland due to my grandfather being Scottish and me having a Scottish surname (Crawford). Next year we are going to visit Skye.

I morally had to vote against independence exactly because of the proposed citizenship policy. Copied from Quebec, and defended by many nats online as part of the trendy theory "civic nationalism", they were saying only to be automatic from birthplace or present living there. While there was a provision to apply for descent citizenship, never to any enquiry or meeting question would they say it would be unrefusable. That includes me directly asking Salmond it on his last campaign phone-in.
The policy office at Leith told me "any discretionary elements" would be decided in the statebuilding after a Yes vote, which meant it could be refusable. SNP minister Alex Neil in a public meeting defended that "the reason why its not a free for all" was in case of "undesirables", which obviously could mean the poor.
The real reason was that part of the nat support base is local-minded and anti-outsider, with the outsider attitude including towards our close diaspora, like emigrants' offspring. So, hypocritically when economic emigration was a frequently made argument for independence, return by the emigrants' families was not seen as popular to those racist voters. The Yes campaign and other SNP campaigns always left that out and played it down. As it was not thought a popular issue by the media either, it dangerously got hardly any media notice that this policy was happening.
Obviously I am such a returner. I lodged EU petition 1448 2014, which cited that human rights article 8, family life, as part of EU law, will oblige the EU to disown shun and sanction Scotland as a pariah racist state and have no dealings with us, unless our parental descent citizenship is unrefusable.
I must have impacted successfully as the Yes movement has lost its long term momentum feeling and high handedness that it kept in the first years after losing. For the policy actually has been fixed now. As recently as 27 Jul 2023, when new leader Humza Yusaf brought out a new citizenship policy. It does now include parental descent in automatic, so I could now vote Yes. But this is far too late for the actual indyref, which remains a taint on our history.

It is called "Bonnie Scotland" for so many very good reasons. My maternal grandmother was Scottish. We migrated from the UK to Australia in 1962 and on my fourth trip back to the UK in 1996, I finally went to Scotland (also to Wales, where my heritage is through my maternal grandfather, for the first time). After staying the night in the Lake District, I headed further north, got off the motorway too soon and drove through Glasgow on a Saturday around lunchtime (it was an Old Firm Derby day, so not the best decision I ever made). As I stopped at Loch Lomond for lunch, then drove through Glen Coe in a storm in the dark and finally found a B&B to stay the night, I increasingly felt that I was really at home. I also cried, many times (seeing Ben Nevis, at Urquhart Castle, meeting my relatives, visiting St Andrews, seeing Edinburgh Castle and crossing the border back into England). Perhaps one day I can visit again and add to the memories of truly being at home.

I'm from Scotland and there are new paths being built where I am. The Crieff - Muthill cycle path is a three mile path that will soon link the two places. It uses a farm track, a new path using the fenced off edge of a field that grows crops, and stretches of a minor road. Together with the Crieff - Comrie path (7 miles) and the Loch Earn Railway Path this will create about 25 miles of an almost car free cycle path, linking Muthill to Lochearnhead From Lochearnhead you can the get onto the path of the former Oban - Callander Railway, 24 miles long. Thats a total of about 50 miles of almost car free cycle path! I'm mentioning this because not all visitors to Scotland will have heard of it. Do pay it a visit.😁

My first time up here took me 15hours from the south coast to Ullapool. I struggled, had a few short stops. I then moved and been here nearly 3yrs, then moved again back down to Perthshire but drive a truck everyday back to Inverness, lovely drive up along the A9. It's lovely scenery here but I do miss the weather of the south coast.
Head for the Cairngorms, Aviemore, Killiecrankie, The Hermitage. But if you'd like to see Stag then the route from Inverness to Ullapool is a must in the evening, plus the mountains and snow is lovely. For beaches which are the best, cleanest and most peaceful in the UK then right up the West coast and along the top.

If, you get a chance to head over to the Western Isles, go to the Isle of Harris, and from Tarbet head down to the village of Leverburgh. There`s miles and miles of golden sandy beaches, all deserted which border mountains. Single track main roads with cottages dotted here and there. The smell of peat fires in those cottages with stunning views of either the Atlantic Ocean or even more stunning Lochs. Crystal clear water.

Enjoy our beautiful country.

Hiya! It never ceases to amaze me the reaction of visitors to Scotland and how emotional some can get. I am born, bred and live in Scotland and have travelled a fair bit around my beautiful country; particularly spending a lot of time in the Highlands / Glencoe etc., but I have only seen a (very) tiny fraction of what this stunning land has to offer. While I do appreciate and understand the outstanding natural beauty of my country, I feel that I sometimes can take it for granted and could see (and do) so much more. I hope you have an amazing time here and continue to come back over and over again - I have a feeling you will. :o) Take care and happy, safe travels!!

As an occasional visitor to Scotland, I've found the scenery improves the further North you go. The drive from John O Groats to Ullapool is particularly spectacular, and takes longer than you might think, because of the frequent stops to enjoy the view! I also found the food to be really good in the places I ate, particularly Scottish beef.

I visited Loch Oich, 18 years ago, after my dad died.
He took my mum & I there in 1970, when I was 10.
We stayed in a little caravan at a campsite on one side of the Loch, - crossing the Loch by a little motorboat to a provisions cabin on the opposite bank for food.
I was 46 then on my 2nd visit, & when I discovered that both the campsite, & the log cabin were both still there doing business, 36 years later, - with both my mum & dad gone, & nothing left but my childhood memories of our trip together, - I sat down on the bank where we had once moored our little boat, & sobbed my heart out..
There is something magical, transcending, & therapeutic about the wild untamed moors, lochs & mountains that are timeless.
For me, Scotland & the Highlands are as close as I will ever get to living in Twin Peaks, my spiritual home.
If you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend.
If you have, you'll know precisely what I mean..

Then I remember thinking back to a holiday I had in Western Canada, and the scenery was Grand, it was Majestic, it was Awesome, it was ... Same! You go for miles and miles through the same pine forests, way off in the distance the same mountain peaks, it's spectacular but it doesn't seem to change very much. But drive for an hour west of Inverness and it changes every 2 minutes, it's sometimes ordinary but often it's just gorgeous.
