Does your chainsaw only run until it gets warm, or will it not even start at all? It could be that you have weak or no spark at all at the spark plug.

My Chinese chainsaw which is new has the same symptom. Run strong when cold then dies and won't start when warm. I replaced the carburetor. Same thing starts right up when cold. Why would coil fail when warm?

I normally don't get into comments but I must thank you. I have a Stihl 012AV that most certainly had an issue with dying when it got hot. Your comment that the spark plug can contribute to this saved me! You cannot purchase an ignition module anymore for my saw...so I thought I would at least try the spark plug after your comment...it worked!!! Before the saw would fire up no problem, run great...then die once it was hot. I replaced with a brand new NGK, it fired up, it got hot, it got hotter, it screamed, it wailed...it did not die! Before getting a new module one must try a new plug first. Thank you for your help!

Thanks for taking the time to upload. Managed to fix 'no spark' issue. It turned out not to be the ignition unit but a combination of bad earth and loose switch cable. You gave me the confidence to properly open up and investigate. Cheers from SCOTLAND!

I'm working on two identical MS194Ts. First is why did Stihl make it so hard to get the plug wire off the plug and to adjust the high low screws on the carb.
One saw runs but idles too high and if i adjust the idle down it dies. The other saw has no spark.
    As always, Donny...Great videos

So if I have spark after removing the positive, it's an electrical problem. What would you think the electrical problem might be? Do you have another video that might cover that?

  • @mikesmith1473

Great video Dony, However, I would like to add one more tid-bit of advice. I have a Poulen 2250 that was driving me crazy. I had checked for spark and the spark plug was sparking fine but it would not start. Even with starter fluid it would not start. The carb was good, the gas lines were good, good compression, the spark plug was sparking but it would not run. Then I noticed an unusually large gap between the ignition coil and the flywheel. Why or how that happened I’ll never know. After I properly gapped the ignition coil the old 2250 runs like a new one. Thought I would share that with you so you can pass it on.

Thanks, helped me quickly diagnose a Chinese 6200 62cc chainsaw where the on off switch was bad right new from the factory. Once I unplugged that black wire from the coil the spark plug was sparking while cranking. I'm sure that definitely means they don't do quality control or start each one up before packing them up. Anyway, ordered 5 new switches from ebay for half the price that one would cost shipped from a USA seller. While it's probably gonna take up to a month to arrive, I just turn it off with the choke, they turn off fine that way too.

great video again Dony. I am working on a new MS261C m-tronic saw that has no spark. I also found that when the chain break is engaged you cannot pull the recoi. I pulled the break cover off and found one of the tension springs was broken. I wounder if that may have contributed to the no spark issue. I'll do some more troubleshooting and make sure it's the coil.

Excellent Help. Following your instructions to replace the MS 280 ignition module it now starts right up. However, at one point you mention starting problems could also be in some other part of the electrical system. Now, some time later after cutting a cord or two my saw will not TURN OFF when I move the switch to the OFF position. It sure would be nice to see more info about the other parts of the electrical system and what kinds of problems they might typically have.

Is ignition module failure a known problem with the MS 270, MS 280 saws? I've had an MS 270 for at least a dozen years, and I just had to replace my 5th module. This last one cost $160 from the Stihl dealer. I use the saw, maybe, 6-8 times a year, so it's not like it's getting a ton of use. I'm just getting frustrated at having to keep replacing a module, when I could buy a brand new equivalent saw for 3 times the price of the module. I'm tempted to just buy cheap aftermarket modules, because, if nothing else, I'll feel like I got my money's worth if it fails in a year or 2. Any thoughts?

One of the first things I check is the position of the bayonet lug on the end of the spark plug wire. These can be undone by users pulling the spark plug wire, haphazardly. I usually take my carb adjustment screwdriver and insert it in the boot and feel for the bayonet lug in the bottom of the boot. A lot of times it has been pushed back down the end of the boot where it can no longer connect the spark plug If this happens, I pull it out of the boot , connect it back on the spark plug wire and inset it back into the boot and re-check it for spark. A lot of times this fixes the problem, sometimes not. I then troubleshoot the coil if I still do not have spark, but this is my first check.

After replacing the ignition module I tried testing for a spark by turning the flywheel rapidly using my hand. When I did not get a spark I assumed the problem hadn’t been fixed. Come to find out you can’t turn the flywheel quickly enough by hand to get a spark. Once I reinstalled the recoil starter I had a good spark.

A business card is usually fine for setting the air gap, as long as it is .010 thick. Some are thicker. The Stihl spec is .15-.30mm, or .006-..012 inches, so a .010 thick business card is fine.

Hi Don. I have a Stihl MS211/C chainsaw in Australia that I have to replace the flywheel on. I accidentally sheared the key on my old one when I was trying to remove the clutch by trying to remove it the wrong way. (I had a severe brain fade ) .. I now have a new flywheel and wonder if you need to remove the ignition coil first to provide clearance and the correct way to torque up the nut on the flywheel . I would follow your advice by using a business card to provide the correct flywheel magnet/coil clearance. If you know the correct torque specs it would be useful to confirm. I think 28 Newton Metres ?. I have been looking on your site for flywheel removal / installation but not having too much success. Any help would be much appreciated.

My Stihl blower SH86c does not spark. The blue cutoff switch wire is also broken. Does that broken wire prevent spark at the plug? I personally do't think so because the cutoff switch hasn't worked for a long time and the machine still was able to start. I would flood the motor to get it to stop. Would the blue broken wire really prevent it from starting at this point? Thanks for responding back.

As you've done a video about a rev limiting issue with one in the past, I thought that I'd ask you about the OEM coil for a 2007 Stihl MS361. As you may recall, the coil in question is the Stihl 1135 400 1300. This is the third time we've had issues with this expensive ignition module (coil), so I was wondering if Stihl ever came up with a better coil for the MS361? If not, do you know of a coil that came in a different Stihl saw that's a suitable substitute for the 1135 400 1300? Thank you.

All good info. one bit you should mention , that is the Spark plug is a Resistive type and that if you use a none Resistive Spark plug or HT lead type then you will damage your control board.

Imagine how many Stealerships must hate you for giving us all this good information.
However, they don't have to worry as 99% of people out there will never try to repair their own equipment. Too busy, or too scared, or too lazy.

Both wires were open and frayed before taking it apart, good chance that could be the problem, also double check with multi meter...
Plus the gaps were way different
    Good job

I have the same saw and exact problem. I installed a new ignition coil and still no spark? Weird. What else could cause no spark
