    Quite literally still the gold standard for action horror, even with the remake out this game has a kind of gameplay loop that the remake didn't fully capture.

    I wrapped up yet another run of the original RE4 a while ago after finishing its remake, hyperbole doesn't even begin to approach just how well this game comes together. RE4 is underrated if anything, It belongs in some non-existent hall-of-fame on how to absolutely perfectly fucking nail the whole gaming experience. Didn't age well my ass. It shits on most video games that come out today in terms of design.
    Good video btw. Love Castlevania's music.

    The HD release that came out in 2014 probably should've been mentioned in this video. It only improved the graphics, but it improved them incredibly well. Nothing was redesigned or different, only more detailed.
    The castle actually became really good to look at.
    Also, the HD remake makes the game really good to play with using a mouse and keyboard on the PC. It's one of my comfort games, something I go to for a 20 minute break after a strenuous day of work.

    It aged better than the remake. After one playthrough of the remake I was burnt out. The Merchant is the reason for this. You want a laser sight? Go wash the Merchant’s muddy lifted pick-up truck. Want a treasure map so you can grind for treasure? Go mow the Merchant’s lawn. You want the final upgrade for a weapon? Make Capcoms CEO come through his pants.

      Yeah I played the game 1,5 times and first round was on Hardcore, which was a huge mistake because enemies almost never gets stunned which means less fun melees... not that the melees in RE4make are any good anyway... Feels like the new devs didn't understand what made RE4 fun...

    • @N.i.E.M.O

      The Wii version's controls were so good that I couldn't play the game with non-motion aiming again - even the HD versions. When RE5 came out I had to force myself to try and enjoy the old control scheme. I would even buy the game on PS3 and the stupid motion controllers JUST to be able to use motion aiming again (although it still wasn't as accurate as the Wii version).
      I think that RE4 in VR is defenitely the best one now, but yeah, the Wii version was amazing - especially considering it was clearly a lazy port.
      The biggest issue I have with the Wii version is the low-resolution, especially if you want tonplay on an HDTV in widescreen. The game legit just crops and zooms in on the standard letterbox 480p picture, resulting in an even more atrocious image quality. It looks like it's 360p. Maybe even worse. Even the PS2 version in widescreen had better image quality (though the actual graphics were still 'worse'). A shame Capcom didn't take the time to actually render the game in true anamorphic widescreen (which they literally advertise on the back of the box). They managed to do it for Umbrella / Darkside Chronicles, so why not RE4? I understand it was a quick cheap port and all but damn. It's the one glaring flaw I had with the Wii version, which is a shame because the controls were so good.

    I love tank controls, but they were never implemented *because* of the difficulty they introduced. They were implemented because they were necessary for the fixed camera angles of RE1-3/C:V/0, and the stress they induced just happened to fit the games. They were presumably kept in 4 because of tradition and the newness of the third person shooter genre not having standards set at the time.

  • @TheCyclicGamer

    Second comment, I also want to say that there is no such thing as outdated game design. Design is all about intent, it has to have a purpose. If it fulfills that purpose well, then it's good design. If not, then it's bad design, simple as that.

    • @N.i.E.M.O
      @N.i.E.M.O ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true, but back in the day we were far more forgiving about certain game design choices that in retrospect don't hold up so well. Mario 64's camera for example.
      Then there's the reverse case scenario in which people bitched about the controls of games like Alien Resurrection on PS1 or Turok on N64 which would essentially lay the groundwork for the modern FPS dual-analogue setup that has since become the standard for console FPSs.

    I’ve been playing the original since 2014 as well and aside from the art direction, QTEs and the pacing in the last third of the campaign, I feel the original is still a fun game to play. I think OG RE4 is one of those games where growing up with it makes it harder to see the areas where its aged and by extension, makes it harder to recommend to your friends who aren’t familiar with its quirks. The game was designed with its controls in mind and while they work, they have aged to a certain extent and represent the time in which the game was made. Conversely, while RE4R feels smoother to play with omnidirectional movement, being able to aim and shoot while moving, knife parries and stealth kills, said knife was given a durability meter and enemies were made smarter and more aggressive to compensate for your new abilities. While both have their merits and detractors, I do feel Remake is the more approachable game for newcomers and is my preference. I don’t think the original has aged BADLY per se, but certain aspects feel a little archaic and I see where some people are coming from

    There're definitely things you can criticize RE4 for, including things that have only become less standard as time has gone on (like lack of subtitles in some versions), but it always seems to be focused on the fact it isn't the same as the new games. Like, it's ok for different games in a series to be different games instead of just different campaigns with interchangeable gameplay mechanics and visual styles. It's ok for Devil May Cry 1 to not be Devil May Cry 5 or Metal Gear 1 to not be MGSV Part 3
    I disagree about the art style though. It isn't my favorite in the series but it makes use of the GameCube well and has a stylization all its own. It isn't as strong as REmake or VII but it's definitely got its own identity

    I agree on everything besides the art direction, hell i prefer the OG's one over the remake, i feel like the remake is overly cluttered just to flex how "Next Gen" it is and takes away from that unique feel the OG had. I think the brown era of games was pretty tough to look at sometimes but, there are examples like RE4 and NFS: Most Wanted where i feel like it serves an actual purpose rather than being brown and dark for the sake of it. The castle also serves as a nice rest on the eyes from all the brownery of the village, and talking about the castle, i think there's where the OG's art direction beats the remake the most. In the remake, the castle looks too dark for my taste, and you can say that the overly bright castle from the OG is unrealistic and some people may even not like it at all but, in my opinion i think it serves to create that vibe that i cant really explain, vibe that has been lost in the remake's castle. There's only 2 things in RE4 that are less than perfect, 8 way aiming instead of full 360 degree aiming, it's not a huge difference but playing dead Space which is basically RE4 in Space or even nearly any other shooter and going back to RE4 does feel kinda wrong at first, it's a quick adjustment but it's still an adjustment and it still just never feels as good to aim as full 360 motion. And Mercenaries mode, that's the only point where the gameplay feels too frantic for the tank controls especially once the instakill enemies start getting spammed, needed a smoother ramp up at the very least

    Started first playing in 2021. I disagree with the Art Direction. The Village has this deadly ghosttown feel with the gray skies, the old and broken Village making it look like a lost place. It was made to make the game more eerie and combining it with the soundtrack should make it way obvious. The Castle as example isnt just generic dark bloody hallways - its bright, it feels to normal, it feels uncomfortable and its also very open. I felt being watched at my first playthrough and the soundtrack helped a lot. Not only makes it the game more visible (which is a big problem of the remake being so dark) it also makes it more eerie and special in its own way!
    But hey nobody remembers RE4 for its good atmosphare because we played it all so friggin much that we start to forget the atmosphare, the great eerie areas, the ambience etc.
    I can remember when I was looking behind me all the time at the castle because I felt like someone was standing behind me. Funnily enough didnt happen at the Remake even with those bloody, dark, long and closely hallways... The original was way more creepier for me. It was also the only Resident Evil Title funny enough which made me scared. Not even RE1R scared me, none of the stuff RE7 or RE8 throwed scared me really.

    There are some things I do like in the remake that I wish could be brought over into the original: More variety in the Ganado models, more use of blue medallions, Luis' redone backstory and extended screentime, and maybe the bolt thrower if it didn't break the remake.
    But in all honestly, I prefer the original game. This isn't nostalgia, the remake is good, definitely far better than RE Village which has already aged like expired milk and is a poor man's RE4, but the original has way more charm, more refined combat and better game design, more likeable and memorable villains, Ashley is a lot less annoying (People who say she is are bad at the original game, because that's the only time she can be annoying is if you are bad at protecting her) than her remake version. The soundtrack is memorable and more pronounced/defined, the merchant is a lot less annoying (Dude won't shut up in the remake), and it also has way better art direction.
    Speaking of which, you mention that the art direction in the original is bad because the game is mostly brown, you do know that art direction is more than just about colors, right? It's aesthetics, it's styles, it's the feeling of the environment or location that you are in. One example of the original game having better art direction than the remake is in the U.I of the Inventory, where the original has this rusty metallic aesthetic to it, with Leon standing on the side, while the remake has pitch-blackness with smoke and no Leon, it's completely devoid of any sense of art in that regard.

Does that mean I think the original Biohazard 4 is the greatest game of all-time? No. For me the greatest game ever is 30XX, but that's just me. If someone thinks the original Biohazard 4 or the remake is the best game of all-time, that's fine. As for the GameCube version of Biohazard 4 being the best, I disagree. Disagree that any game Needs a remake. If CV 1 and 0 "need" remakes cause they're a different style than 4 onwards, then what about 4 once those games are done? It'd be the odd one out with tank controls. The fixed camera angles, character based movement, adventure game style gameplay of the pre-4 games are just as thought out and worth it as 4's own quirks. RE should ease up on the remakes overall, 3 of the last 4 major games have been remakes, that's ridiculous.

Like the remakes are good games (well, I haven't played 4) but they are not the same experiences. A game is more than just a story after all, otherwise we'd all just be reading plot summaries on Wikipedia, and with how heavily 2make and 3 change you can't even say the story is the same either with how many elements are completely changed, like Kendo, Ada's cover story, Nicholai's allegiance, etc. I'd rather Capcom make some more new stories whether they be prequels, sequels, or set between games like Revelations, rather than dangling nostalgia shaved into the series current standard mold.

    The only downside to RE4 nowadays is that the ports constantly fuck with the controls.
    GameCube - B button is on the left side, therefore left button should always work like that.
    Xbox Port - B button is on right side? We'll just move the function to the wrong side to keep the same lettering.
    GCN's Z for Map translates to Right Bumper or R1, easy conversion. Naw, let's remap it to the Y or Triangle button, then change menu to Start.

    Love the video though one thing I will say is that as someone who grew up using a controller for FPS games for a decade and then switched to PC I am physically unable to enjoy ANY shooters on controller anymore and this had been the case for about 90% of my friends who followed the same path. I understand the logic but I am physically incapable of playing a game with a controller now and it has been this way since around the 2 year mark of switching.
    This also really sucks because I can't get any of my friends into a series like the campaigns of Gears of War 1-3 because the fact that you have to use a controller killed almost all of the fun even if the game is a masterpiece and I can't even replay them myself. My biggest pet peeve is when a game has a bad PC port and the comments are "bro just use a controller"

    • @SalsaSeth
      @SalsaSeth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most shooters are usually designed with keyboard and mouse controls in mind. RE4 was originally designed with a controller in mind. I talked about RE4's PC controls because I heard offhand how they disliked how it played on keyboard. But multiple people in the comments have said, "nah fam, keyboard makes it easy mode."
      My question for you is every game impossible to play on controller? I primarily play on console, but when I do play PC games (usually Minecraft) I don't find trouble going back. Like do you play platformers (Celeste, Pizza Tower, Cuphead) on keyboard? You might want to just rebind the controllers buttons to what's comfortable. My friend Jekrix, they're really into Celeste, and they control that game using only the shoulder buttons. Maybe experiment with that.

    • @Jwolf220
      @Jwolf220 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SalsaSeth No I can play basically every game that isn't a shooter on controller but I still prefer the mouse and keyboard if at all possible. Jedi Survivor is a good example that everyone said was basically unplayable on mouse but it was fine for me. I recently replayed a bunch of Zelda games on controller and it was great outside of stuff like the horseback bow and arrow sections.
      The best way to describe it is that there is a disconnect in my brain now because I used to be really good and now there in a huge mental handicap.
      We tried to get my mom to play Stanley Parable when it came out on PC and her brain could not wrap itself around the controls. I'm not like that per say since I understand HOW it works but in a similar way my brain cannot do what it used to be able to do aiming with a controller to anywhere near the same extent so it kills the game entirely for me and the same with a lot of my friends who also switched to PC.
      That's the best way I can really describe it. By the way I did still enjoy RE4 on PC and probably even more than I did playing it on the GameCube as a kid. I do agree it felt like playing on easy mode to an extent.

    • @N.i.E.M.O
      @N.i.E.M.O ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's definitely hard to go back to dual-analogue for shooters once you get used to the precision of mouse aiming. The Wii version of RE4 made it impossible for me to go back to the original controls (even when the HD versions released). I wouldn't even play another version of the game until the VR port came out.
      As for the PC version, I bought it and I love mouse aiming - but I simply can't stand keyboard controls. Usually on PC I use a convoluted setup in which I use the mouse with my right hand and then I hold a controller in my left hand. The results here vary, as I can only access the left stick and a few buttons on the controller with my left hand, and theres only so many functions I can assign to the mouse. For some reason though, RE4 on PC won't let me use a controller and mouse controls at the same time, so I'm out of luck there.

    it still holds up and I still like the original over the remake. the re4 remake is an odd one, because its a game that didn't need a remake. I always thought remakes were for legendary games that were clearly outdated in todays times and by popular demand gets a remake. re4 is a legendary game but its not severely outdated, and I didn't hear many people demanding a remake like how they did with the re2 remake. and the remake was good, but the unnecessary changes they made such as dialogue, personality (Leon not being funny), and slight plot changes is what made me pick the original over remake.
    for example saddler is the main villain, in the remake this dude isn't shown til near the end of the game, and you have no reason to kill him other than its your mission. in the original he's constantly trying to kill Leon throughout the game, and then in a shocking brutal scene he kills Luis who was a good friend to Leon, giving Leon and the player a reason to hate him. in the remake all of that is absent, Luis still dies but Leon and Luis don't have any sort of relationship at all in the remake, so his death didn't mean much to Leon.

    • @SittingBass
      @SittingBass ปีที่แล้ว

      Saddler has less presence in the remake and is perhaps more generic, but the original Saddler was definitely not "constantly " trying to kill Leon. The first time he meets leon, he monologues to him and lets him and Ashley escape. He also kills Luis in the original and then dips, leaving Leon alone.

      You wouldn't like the majority of gaming then, since cheesiness runs through the foundation of gaming like mountain dew runs through a fat kids veins. My advice lighten up, try new things and you might find it to your liking after all, if not then that's fine too, but don't just judge things at face value, you lose a lot of potentially amazing experiences that way, and you don't have to always be serious either, everyone and everything has a different charm to it, it doesn't have to all be bold-faced seriousness.@@ryanthereaper5032

      I think the visuals still hold up to an extent. Although I do recall the game looking very jarring coming off the incredible detail of RE1R and RE0 on GCN - but even back then I knew it wasn't possible to render a fully 3D environment that could look as good as the pre-rendered backgrounds. Still, the highly aliased and dithered image quality was a bit of an eyesore (though it's mostly noticeable only in the village). Stretching the screen to 'widescreen' (which is exactly what the Wii version's fake widescreen mode was) looked horrendous - basically resulting in a 360p image quality (maybe 240p).
      In HD, the image quality is cleaned up, but the incredibly low-resolution textures become far more apparent. It's funny because the textures are very detailed and 'realistic' in style, but you don't even need to get up that close to them to notice just how pixelated they are. I do believe the new(er) PC version and the Quest 2 version did improve many of the textures, but not by a lot, and in VR things look grainy anyway (due to the nature if VR in general, especially Quest 2).
      Overall, for its day, RE4 was definitely one of the most graphically impressive games of its day, and while some aspects, such as the character and enemy models, and overall art direction, still look great, it's not a game that would be remembered for being groundbreaking in any way - which may be the nature of being a GCN game with nothing else but an even worse performing PS2 port. I do often wonder how the game might have looked had it released on the OG Xbox as lead platform (which apparently Mikami originally intended to).

      I do get where you're coming from, even if RE4 is one of my favorite games ever it changed a lot in RE for the best and for the worst. The OTS camera for me was an improvement even if I also liked the fixed camera but for others it killed the atmosphere of RE games, then the shift from horror to action gave birth to abominations like RE5, RE6 or RE8.
      Finally that intro with "stocks killed Umbrella" is easily one of the worst moments in the RE franchise. You have this pharmaceutical corporation doing biological weapons responsible for the first RE games, then you have RE2 ending with Leon saying it up to them to take out Umbrella, RE3 with Jill going to join Chris to take out Umbrella, CV with Chris and Claire saying that now they take the fight to Umbrella, all those games building a climatic final part to the Umbrella arc, so now enter RE4, where's Umbrella at? Lmao stocks killed Umbrella because the game creators were tired of Umbrella and Zombies so they moved on (and no Umbrella Chronicles is not that ending that we should have gotten).
