    For many years I have used ratcheting wrenches, and for many years I have had a love/hate relationship with them. They seemed like a great idea when they first came out & after continual issues with earlier designs (by other manufacturers), they became one of those tools "of last resort".
    The problems that arise with many of them is the fact that they do not have directional change switches, and to go from loosening to tightening, you literally had to remove the wrench and flip it over. Easy as that may sound, it is impossible in many cases when there is no clearance to remove the tool (i.e. - tensioner/idler pulleys next to the frame) & what was going to be a 5 minute repair, ends up taking an hour since you got the wrench stuck!
    The other big issue I have with other varieties is the fact that many of them are completely flat with no offset on the box end (to accommodate the fact you need to flip the wrench) & you end up scraping your fingers/hands/knuckles on things while working on a car.
    Proto has eliminated the issues that I previously have had with ratcheting wrenches, and finally I have a set that I enjoy using! They have the directional switch not only built-in, but also recessed....that way it is not catching on your thumb or anything else while you use it & it wont accidentally switch directions on you.
    They gave the boxed end a 15 degree offset from the handle & that allows you to freely move the wrench without "busting your knuckles".
    And another huge plus, is the fact that they are "long pattern" aka much longer than standard wrenches & it allows you to gain a lot of additional leverage, and helps break loose stubborn bolts/nuts with a lot less effort.
    The sets come in 4 varieties :
    JSCV-11SA (SAE - 1/4" - 3/4")
    JSCV-18SA (SAE - 1/4" - 1 1/4")
    JSCVM-14SA (Metric - 6mm - 19mm)
    JSCVM-20SA (Metric - 6mm - 32mm)
    Check out the video to see all the features of the Proto ASD Ratcheting Wrenches for yourself!

    These wrenches are very aesthetically pleasing. They remind me of the old I-Beam Snap-on. Mac has these same wrenches, of course they are the same parent company as Mac.

  • @RobertJohnson-pb9vr

    Good review, Sir! However, I'm afraid I have to call shenanigans on you. When demonstrating the splined end of the Proto wrench vs the Craftsman between the 6:30 and 7:00 minute marks in the video you try to continue to tighten the bolt with the Craftsman wrench saying that it won't remove it. You then take the Proto attach it to the bolt and actually turn in the correct direction to remove it. Now, if you were merely showing that the bolt was rounded that's one thing, but you give the impression that the Craftsman would not be able to remove the bolt when clearly at one point when reversing direction ever so briefly the Craftsman actually does appear to bite the bolt. Please forward your address and I will be by with my broom to dispense some Irish justice upon you! Thank you for uploading!

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Johnson The point of that was to prove that the bolt was rounded....and the the Proto would remove damaged bolts. It wasnt to do any shenanigans I assure you.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      efjiongco This set is metric & the demo setup I have with the grade 8 bolt is 9/16".....I think the open ends look similar between the two, but the Proto's absolutely do a better job gripping on and removing damaged fasteners where the cheaper wrenches always have looser tolerances (wider opening) and they just do not grip the same way. For everyday use, the Gearwrench is fine....but for those tight situations and/or damaged fasteners the Proto wrenches will work better.

      Yup, looks like they use the Mac Precision Torque non ratcheting shank and add a ratcheting box end. Same parent company

    Umm, does anyone not notice when he is using the Craftsman wrench he is actually trying to tighten the faster then uses the Proto to loosen it?

  • @ChadChadillac
    @ChadChadillac 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    *DUDE!!!!* You rotated the Craftsmen wrench clockwise, (tightening) and rotated the Proto counter-clockwise (loosening)... I don't doubt that the proto *MAY* be better, but this video comparison is totally *worthless* since you didn't provide an equal testing procedure.. It almost looks as if you did it on purpose too.. Why??? *Why???*

      This is Whats for Dinner I was showing that the bolt was rounded off....I did not attempt to remove it with the craftsman since I wanted to show the Proto ASD's ability to remove a rounded off bolt. As I am sure you saw from the video, it was a review of the Proto, not a comparison of the Craftsman VS Proto.

      Real Tool Reviews Please don't get me wrong, cuz I love your videos.. I'm also a mechanic, and I just can't see wanting to buy a NEW tool that doesn't prove to be better than a standard design.. If you showed the standard craftsmen losing grip, and the proto biting in, both in the same direction, I'd be more inclined to think it's good, and want to buy it. But at this point, there's no proof a regular plain wrench can't remove that fastener.. Sorry to be a downer, but I want to see new tools being put to the test, against the typical tools we ALL have already. And why this new stuff is better.. Just my two cents, but that's why I even started watching your channel.. THE TRUTH, cuz I am definitely not a rich mechanic.. None of us are.

      This is Whats for Dinner I will keep that in mind for future videos....as I am sure you can understand, it is very hard to continually come up with new & valid video clips to show these tools actually being used. I am sure that I could have done things differently in this video, but its a learning curve....thanks for the suggestions & for watching! I try and make them as entertaining and informative as I can.

      Real Tool Reviews Your a kickass guy, and very, well, diplomatic.. Your a smart fella, and yes, keeping things new and coming up with new content is not always easy.. I too do videos, obviously about food, and not all ideas are winners...lol.. I appreciate you not taking offense to my suggestions, and actually responding very positive. Whether you wanted to tell me to fuk off or not, you didn't, and you actually were very professional.. I respect that.. I'll be watching alot more of your videos. Thank you sir

      This is Whats for Dinner with as easy as that 12pt box end on the craftsmen wrench turned on that rounded bolt, there is no way it would have bit in enough to loosen it even if he wasn't turning it the wrong way. If you notice with the proto when the bolt does come loose there was some energy on that wrench, he put some effort into loosening that bolt. As much as it sucks to say wrenches like these are way better than what most of us have and can afford to have.

      Jacob Gibson Yeah, I used to....but the prices on tools seem to change with the wind. I considered putting "retail price", but every seller changes that, so now I just normally put an amazon link to keep things simple.
