I'm surprised that you basically skipped past Ballad Of Frankie Crisp, I was waiting for your views on that track, its my favorite track on the album, it has a hauntingly ethereal quality to it.
I couldn't agree with you more. And knowing that he was referencing a real person who was an avid gardener is such a knock out. How John could have bypassed the exceptional steel guitar work and the way it was recorded is almost unforgivable.
ATMP is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. All of George's subsequent efforts have gorgeous tracks on them as well. I listen to 33 1/3 and " George Harrison" as much as ATMP. As a kid I recall Nic Schaffner writing that " Beautiful Girl " could have been on RS. As an artist I feel his material has aged beautifully. Certainly , Cloud 9 and Brainwashed are magnificent in my opinion. I love George's writing .As far as AR is concerned, two of the greatest Beatles tracks of all time are on that LP and he wrote both.
Without a doubt. From 1970, McCartney was really good and so was John Lennon Plastic Ono Band. But They couldn't touch All things must pass! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
Thank you for making this! I love this album and totally agree with your review. Run of the Mill is my favorite song but there are so many strong tracks. A couple, yes, are over-produced but do not detract strongly from the overall strength of the album. I enjoyed learning some more about the history of this album too. Again, thanks!
Run of the Mill is excellent! It's very hard to pick a favorite song. Maybe least favorite? I'd say Isn't it a Pity (Version 2) Its good dont get me wrong but, Version 1 blows it away!.. I wasnt a fan of the Apple Jam.It's all good but, I can't just listen to jamming that long..I loved It's _Johnny's Birthday_ I think they were celebrating _John Lennon's 30th Birthday_ ! Imagine, he would've been 80 this year? WOW.. 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
This is one of the great albums of all time that keeps getting better. When George released a remastered version shortly before his death I hadn't played the LP in many years but feel in love with this music again with that beautiful remaster. Thanks for reviewing this classic, I mostly agree with you but I think I like this even more than you. I didn't have as many issues as you did with some of the songs. I love 'Let It Down'.
Thanks Ron. I am gald we mostly agree. My main reservation is regarding Apple Jam. The first four sides are pretty much brilliant, even 'Let It Down' (just not my favourite)
If he would have saved that third jam disk and released it thirty years later as bonus material for the reissue it might have been looked at differently.
I remember as a 10 year old in 1970 being fully transfixed with my older brothers copy of the album, still feel the same way about this marvellous record, part of my childhood. We had that poster on bedroom wall, such happy days!
Great review John, one of my favourite solo Beatle albums, I love all of George's albums apart from Gone Troppo and Cloud Nine, everyone seems to like Cloud Nine, I find it too commercial... This album is just superb!
Father Damien Karras Thanks. All of George's albums have their moments but this one is just staggering. Interesting to contrast this with John's first album, they could not be more different. And hard to see how all of this could have fitted into The Beatles format so if we're looking for a reason The Beatles split, I think we need look no further than the prolific high quality output of 1970 from all four.
Yeah I love John's quote from an interview I think from the Dick Cavett show when Cavett mentioned about fans blaming Yoko for splitting up The Beatles and John saying the fans then should thank Yoko for all the great Music That was made post Beatles... I love McCartney I , Lennon Ono but I find Ringo's Sentimental Journey Horrendous, I love as I mentioned previously Beaucoups Of Blues and Ringo, the rest I can live without.. Out of all of them though, All Things Must Pass stands out as a shining beacon. Who would of thought it at the time that George would come out with the Best IMO Debut...
My favs are: All Things Must Pass, Living in the Material World, Extra Texture, Dark Horse, 33 1/3, George Harrison, Cloud Nine, Somewhere in England. 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
Im part of the younger generation, but man excellent review john. The way you explained the thought behind the album cover was amazing. I really appreciate the authenticity of a giant record now
About the first track 'i'd have you anytime' dylan wrote ' all I have is yours, all you see is mine and i'd gladly hold you in my arms,i'd have you anytime' while George wrote the music and the rest of the lyrics it happened in '68 while George was in america producing 'sour milk sea' for Jackie lomax and hanging with the band he 'cajoled' Bob into writing some lyrics as he was a big dylan fan (who isn't) and wanted to write a song with him anyway thanks for your critical assessments of some great albums whether people agree or not it's your opinion and has to be respected on those grounds keep up the good work
Not counting Apple Jam..ATMP is arguably the best two album record ever made. After his work here George really drifted deeply into Krishna spirituality and away from the material world. ATMP was almost the perfect blend.
Hello John with 'eggs in one basket' thing George said that he had accumulated all these songs while in The Beatles and that he simply wanted to get them out of the way hence doing two albums in one not including the jam sessions. Like Sgt.Pepper he was probably never going to top this album but I think he produced some other great works in fact the only duff albums are 'Dark Horse' where his voice was shredded after a long tour and 'Extra Texture' all the others are great.
He wrote Wah Wah after he walked out of the a studio after his fight with Paul, he said Wah wah was a headache. Isn’t it a pity at the end was na na na na na na isn’t it a pity, a dig at his row with McCartney.
I still have this album on CD. It is 3 CD's in a nice presentation box and booklet. I paid about £16 for it in 2001 I think, which was a lot of money for me back then.
I too had that 2001 CD. It was the new remix by George. I tell you though, I had the original Vinyl that I got for Christmas, back in December 1970. To me, that was the best! Wish I still had my original, just like Johns showing above! I had that! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
I like the album, but it doesn't really compare with John's first two conventional solo album releases, in my opinion. I find the jam sides a little unnecessary and i also feel some of the songs needed tighter editing. They start well, but after a while become a little too repetitive. Harrison's voice isn't the strongest, but he does manage to display more sincerity than the sometimes rather smug and facile sounding McCartney on some of his early more whimsical solo tracks. Harrison certainly sounds earnest, and there is much to recommend with the philosophical nature of his lyrics. Phil Collins actually picked "Run Of The Mill" as one of his all time favourite songs on the 'My Top 10' radio show many years ago, and it also strikes me as a standout. Phil Spector's production works well for the most part and it is a huge contrast to the sound of the late Beatles studio albums, which were far cleaner and more polished. All Things Must Pass still rates outside of Lennon's two early efforts as one of the best albums by a solo Beatle. I suspect, though, it had the potential to be even better, given a tighter edit.
Yes, it doesnt compare to Lennon's first two albums..., All Things Must Pass blows them both away! Some folks dont care for the big production? I myself love it... George has a good voice, not very strong, but good. Listen to my Sweet Lord..He does all the vocals on that, lead and backup, the same with Apple Scruffs. Don't get me wrong, I love Johns PLastic Ono Band & Imagine" They are Great!!!!! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
Georges mum died in 1970 so this could have inspired All Things Must Pass. Run of the Mill is definitely about John and Paul. People concentrate on Georges issues with Paul but he clashed with John equally around 1969-70 , he really didn't like Yoko and her effect on John. I have never quite understood the "beware of ABKO" in Beware of Darkness as in 1970 George was still happy with Klein , it wasn't until 1973 that him and John realised he was a wrong un ( and Paul said I told you so...)
Hi John, Thanks for this interesting review. Can you give me some background on the 2017 remaster? I don't own it myself (yet); it's supposed to sound good, as you can read on dicsogs among others. I can't find any info about this remaster anywhere, who made it etc.... can you tell me something about it? Thanks and greetings! Michael.
I used to have the Carr/Tyler book, the original and the updated versions. First went up to 74 or so, second up to about 78 if I remember correctly. They didn't like hardly any of the solo albums. A Rolling Stones Illustrated Record book was around about that same time. Always meant to pick it up but never did and haven't seen a copy in years.
Matthew Smith Despite disagreeing with many of their assessments, it's still my favourite Beatles book as it is so well written and amusing! Never had the Stones one, that's interesting. The Beatles one came out three times: '75, '78 and '81.
John Heaton Now that I think of it, believe there was one for Dylan too. Don't recall whether Tyler and Carr authored that or the Stones' one but it would make sense that they did. I had the '75 version, remember checking it out from the library before I got a copy and one of the later updates, can't recall which now. Wish I still had them as I too liked them despite not always agreeing with their takes as you said.
I have the Dylan Illustrated Record, it was written by a guy named Alan Rinzler. It has the same format and is lavishly illustrated like the Carr/Tyler book and worth having if you can find it. But the overall tone and writing style of the text is completely different and not as memorable. He has some good insights at times in the book though.
I have to disagree with you on a few songs. My opinion only, I think "Art of Dying, Awaiting on you all and Isn't it a Pity (Version 1) maybe a tad loud but they are some of the best on the album. Really listen to the lyrics on "Art of Dying" And you have to love that last chorus on "Awaiting on you all" " *THE POPE OWNS 51 PERCENT OF GENERAL MOTORS.AND THE STOCK EXCHANGE IS THE ONLY THING HE'S QUALIFIED TO QUOTE US"* Brilliant lyrics! And Isn't it a Pity is supposed to be similar to "Hey Jude".. Remember Paul didnt want George to play riffs after each vocal.. Well, its done here! And the hey jude fade out with the Na-na-na-nas at the end. Its long because thats the way he wanted it! Love George!
Great review. I haven't listened to this album for quite a long time, but I have to reluctantly say that I never really 'really' got into it as much as I felt I should have. It's purely a personal thing because the wall-of-sound production style never resonated much with me. And it kind of ruins it if i'm being honest. Overall the songs are great, but I think i'd much more enjoy them in a more standard type of production.
George didn't like the "Wall of Sound" either. He was talking to Eric Clapton about it. Clapton liked it! George said well then put it on your albums. George later learned to like it. But he stripped some of the songs of it on the 2001 reissue.
Thanks Alex. I love it. I am sure there are plenty of other demos (finished or semi-finished) from this and other albums which could be released if the Harrison estate would get around to it. In general, they don't seem to be that interested. Having said that we do have the expanded version of the 'I Me Mine' book coming out shortly!
I really liked "I Live For You" I read that it was left off the album because it was already filled? Maybe George didnt think t was that good? He shouldve put it out on one of his B-sides.
Hi John, I have heard before that the reason that All Things Must Pass is so extensive is because George had so much material saved up by the fact that John and Paul dominated the song lists on the Beatles albums. With that in mind, which of the songs on All Things Must Pass do you think were potential Beatles songs that were denied that accolade?
John Bellamy Hi there John. Well they rehearsed 'All Things Must Pass' in the Let It Be sessions for sure but rather unsuccessfully (John and Paul seem very half-hearted). I think also there is a rough demo of 'Let It Down' recorded during the same sessions. I think a lot of the songs would have graced Beatles albums had they not split but as for why they weren't on Abbey Road or Let It Be, I think it was down to space (and probably the best reason why they had to split). I think 'Beware Of Darkness' (to name but one) would have been great on Abbey Road although I don't think they attempted it. Other songs such as 'Wah Wah' and 'Run Of The Mill' contained mild digs at Paul and the other Beatles so probably would not have been Beatles songs. And I think John and Paul may have vetoed 'My Sweet Lord' and the other religious songs! Who knows?
Excellent review John. You have referred to "The Illustrated Record"/ Carr Tyler book in other Beatles related videos...I always felt that their review of this album missed the mark rather badly, in my opinion. I do enjoy two of the loud tracks that you mentioned though. "Awaiting On You All" has an appealing girl group ish quality to it to my ears, and I kind of like the way "Let It Down" goes from quiet to loud and back. But I understand your opinion. Although I do find a lot of George's other album's to be at least mildly interesting on some levels, I do tend to feel that no other record of his comes even remotely close in quality to "All Things Must Pass" which caused the rest of his career to suffer in comparison - in my opinion. But it was nonetheless, arguably the best solo Beatle album, wouldn't you agree John?
Thomas Calden Thanks Thomas. Yes Carr & Tyler's review of this (and Material World) is ridiculously harsh. Hard to fathom. Yes one could make a strong case for this to be the best solo Beatles album. Same goes for JL POB which I will review soon although I seem to have mislaid my vinyl copy so need to pick that up, with the lyric inner which I never had.
Maybe you should consider reviewing "Material World" at some point, because I actually tend to agree with C&T's critique, although not as harshly - I do like about four songs on that record. But I enjoy hearing differing points of view. I really wish that more people watched and commented on your album reviews because they are always top notch..
Thomas Calden Yes Material World will have to be reviewed soon! I'm not sure how one can be offended by religious heartfelt lyrics. At least George is sticking by his beliefs and even if he didn't live up to his ideals all the time, it makes a nice contrast to the other three I think.
I do love 'ATMP', but (controversial opinion) It's not my favourite George album. Harrison is my all time favourite musical artist, and this album ranks at #3 for me (only beaten by 'Cloud 9' at #2 and my absolute favourite album of all time at #1 - 'Brainwashed).
Wah wah is the track where i felt George Martin should have been the producer instead of Phil Spector. George`s version on "The concert for Bangla Desh" is in my opinion better than the record. The wall of sound doesn`t fit on this song. The rest of the album is great. I love this. George is really kicking ass!
Yellyman Gonzales yes I heard a demo of 'wah wah' without the big sound and klaus' bass is superb! Having said that I enjoy the album version played loud with what sounds like an army of Ringos!
Do you know which songs Ringo are drumming on on the "All things must pass" album. George said Ringo was on 50% of the album. I guess Jim Keltner is drumming on the rest?
Yellyman Gonzales three drummers credited: ringo, Jim Gordon, Alan white but it doesn't say who plays what on what...knowing Spector it wouldn't surprise me if he had two or three drummers playing together...Jim keltner was not quite on the scene yet
The drumming on "All things must pass" is amazing. Was this album the end of Spector`s wall of sound. I know he did the same thing to John when he produced his christmas single in 71, but "Imagine" and especially "plastic ono band" are not typically Spector albums. There might be a hint of the Wall of sound on "Imagine" but it was not anywhere close to the wall on "All things must pass"
I have very mixed feelings on Phil Spector. He is now in jail for killing a woman. I like his wall of sound, but i think he took it to far sometimes. It worked on "All things must pass" and on "Happy x mas (War is over)" but it sounds really weird on a track like "Wah wah" I`m glad John took control over Phil Spector and refused him to ruin his solo albums. The "Rock and roll album" was ruined anyway. John was drunk all the time, and his voice was shot. The tracks were overproduced and over-arranged, and Spector was crazy.
Great album.......but could have split it up......one in 1970 and one in 1971.......He did put all his eggs in one basket. All those songs were written during the Beatle years.......He just wanted to start off on top........
These remastered jobbies are a complete waste of money. 1. You would virtually need a sound system as good as Abbey Road Studio's themselves to appreciate the difference. Most ppl listen to their music on a Smart Phone. There is no way in hell you can tell a re masterd track from any ordinary track on one of those. 2. In 10 years time when new technology has been invented they will be masterd again. And again 10 year's after that, and so on. It's a license to print money😞
In the notes for the CD reissue of the album (the one with the coloured in cover) George writes that he realises now that some tracks were a bit overdone production wise, and that in a perfect world he would like to do a remix making it a bit barer. Sadly, George was not with us for much longer, though I wonder if he would have really bothered - Much as I would have enjoyed hearing a barer remix, I would also like to think that he would have preferred to have done some gardening instead!
I am trying to get into George's solo career. My thoughts may change, but I don't consider this a masterpiece. Original albums that are masterpieces don't have this many problems. All my own tastes of course. Spector production. Generally I don't like it on most of the album, but there are a few songs in particular where it makes the songs almost unlistenable to me. Wah Wah and Awaiting On You all in particular. Songs sounding like other songs. Well we know about My Sweet Lord. But how about What Is Life? When I hear this song I can't not hear Keep On Running by the Spencer Davis Group. Agree it is an overrated song anyway, and the production is terrible on this one for me. Isn't it a Pity could have been a very strong song, but for the simple song that it is, it should never be that long. So I skip it, but quite incredibly he brings us another version of it later in the album! I Dig Love really lacks any punch for the type of song it is. Apple Scruffs is a fairly weak song imo. Let It Down I am not keen on either, again really don't like the production on that song. There are a good number of strong songs too imo. It is a good album. The Dylan cover is probably my favourite. It is a good version, but at the end of the day it is just a cover. I get it that people like what Spector brought to this album. It has it's own consistent sound that is kind of dreamy. But for me it also means a lot of it is quite samey. I know this is a very different view to many, but it is no masterpiece for me.
Phil Spector such an over rated producer yes he did do some greatthings but when i listen to this album today it is so tinny sounding i saw an Jefferson Airaplane documentury on youtube- they were saying they wanted phil to produce their fist album so when they went to his house to talk to him they saw what a wack job he was and knew he was not the guy for them lol anyway i love the album too bad george martin didnt produce it wha wha sounds so crappy
Yes, if the Beatles kept on going, it would take at least 10 years before we heard almost all the songs off of All things must pass. I guess back then, you didnt think like this because we didnt hear the solo stuff yet. I was heartbroken when I heard they split.. Believe me, I was a kid in the 60's and there wasn't nothing better than hearing the Next "new" Beatles" record! You never knew what it was going to sound like because they always changed! The new record sounded different from the previous.. Awesome man 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
This is a good solid album. I feel "Isn't It A Pity" on side one was directed at the Bealtes: Isn't a pity, now isn't a shame how we break each others hearts and cause each other pain. The beauty that surrounds us, now isn't it a pity..."
Yeah maybe but he didnt exactly contribute to the harmony either over the years....i think it was meant more generally and i find it in part uplifting and in part pious
@@johnheaton5667 How can you have perfect Harmony when most of your songs were rejected? Could Lennon & McCartney deliberately reject his songs in fear that they were better than their own songs? I hate to believe that. 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
I'm surprised that you basically skipped past Ballad Of Frankie Crisp, I was waiting for your views on that track, its my favorite track on the album, it has a hauntingly ethereal quality to it.
Sir Frankie Crisp is an awesome song, Music & lyrics! One of the greatest songs George has written! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
I couldn't agree with you more. And knowing that he was referencing a real person who was an avid gardener is such a knock out. How John could have bypassed the exceptional steel guitar work and the way it was recorded is almost unforgivable.

Thanks Jimmy. 33&1/3 is a (mostly) lost gem, as is GH for that matter. Oh well. Us fans know :- )
Probably the two best tracks on AR.
ATMP is a fine album. But only the first 2 album's are worth listening to. The last album is mostly a tedious jam sessionzzzzzzz😴
It's the best beatle solo album by far.
Thanks for your comment Gilson!
Without a doubt. From 1970, McCartney was really good and so was John Lennon Plastic Ono Band. But They couldn't touch All things must pass! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
Not sure about that comment. But I do think George's music has aged better than Paul's.
RAM for me is a whole different level

Obra prima do eterno George Harrison All Things Must Pass 1970 👏👏👏👏👏👍🙏🇬🇧.
He followed it up with some great Albums, including his last before he passed away, his writing to me was a better writer than the other Beatles.
George wrote many great songs with The Beatle’s other than Here Comes The Son & Something, Taxman, While My Guitar Gently Weeps to name a couple.
John, another great review, love your videos, just one thing, I believe Allan White is playing drums on My Sweet Lord...
Not counting Apple Jam..ATMP is arguably the best two album record ever made. After his work here George really drifted deeply into Krishna spirituality and away from the material world. ATMP was almost the perfect blend.

Nice review 🎸Masterpiece!🍏
Alan White who playes drums with Yes since 1972 performed also on this album as well with Lennon,Winwood,Ginger Bakers Airforce and Joe Cocker.
michael raes thanks yes the drums on instant jarma are superb!
And apparently Phil Collins also played on of Art of Dying( confirmed by George)
Olha os quadros atrás na parede!!❤️❤️❤️

Great review John, of one of the most amazing pieces of work in pop/rock music - ever.
Gazza P Thanks. I agree!
1970-71 would have produced another great White (Type) album. I guess you can make your own. This is my favorite George album, without doubt.
I'm sure this is everyones. 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶

Hey, John, are you ready for a REMIXED "All Things Must Pass" album next years? The title track is on You Tube now.
I used to have the Carr/Tyler book, the original and the updated versions. First went up to 74 or so, second up to about 78 if I remember correctly. They didn't like hardly any of the solo albums.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻obrigada
I have to disagree with you on a few songs. My opinion only, I think "Art of Dying, Awaiting on you all and Isn't it a Pity (Version 1) maybe a tad loud but
they are some of the best on the album. Really listen to the lyrics on "Art of Dying" And you have to love that last chorus on "Awaiting on you all"
" *THE POPE OWNS 51 PERCENT OF GENERAL MOTORS.AND THE STOCK EXCHANGE IS THE ONLY THING HE'S QUALIFIED TO QUOTE US"* Brilliant lyrics!
Great album. George Harrison was the best.
Was? No IS.... he might be gone from Planet Earth but, He's alive up in Heaven!!!!! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
Very insightful review. Funny, I've never listened to the 3rd album in the set, and I guess I'm not likely to anytime soon.
Pretty Green Vinyl Guy ha! Well it's better than Electronic Sounds! Cheers
Great review, keep them coming. I'd love to know what you think of the bonus track "I Live For You". For me, It's always been one of my favorites
Who knows?
John Heaton Hi John, I have just sent you a message regarding this.
Over produced by Phil ? that was his style, not a bad song on the Album.
Question what your thoughts about the bonus track on 2001 version on all thing must pass like I live for you, and my sweet lord (2000)
Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, and Peter Frampton appear on this album uncredited
Great album.......but could have split it up......one in 1970 and one in 1971.......He did put all his eggs in one basket. All those songs were written during the Beatle years.......He just wanted to start off on top........
Theres a reason for the double album, well....triple...
I bet you like it.
Just got this for Christmas from my Sister
Lucky you! 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
George produced much of the album because Spector was pissed all the time.
Gdoo review John
transcendenttv thanks!
did u meet the other beatles. or may pang ,fred seaman
ar ar met Paul outside MPL and George outside wembley and ringo in Kensington...v briefly...all in 1987...no not met may or Fred
The wall of sound fucks up the bass guitar the whole album
Isn't it a pity that the Beatles broke up in 1970?
Harrison Clark yes especially the nasty manner of it but I love the solo stuff too especially in the 70s
John Heaton I wasn't asking a question, just a joke
Harrison Clark cool..I wasn't sure :- )
Yes, if the Beatles kept on going, it would take at least 10 years before we heard almost all the songs off of All things must pass.
I guess back then, you didnt think like this because we didnt hear the solo stuff yet. I was heartbroken when I heard they split..
Believe me, I was a kid in the 60's and there wasn't nothing better than hearing the Next "new" Beatles" record! You never knew
what it was going to sound like because they always changed! The new record sounded different from the previous.. Awesome man 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
The Jams are the best. And yet you disregard them. Who Are you?
Your annoying at the end and go on for too long. You known more than anyone. Ain't shy bout either
Could Lennon & McCartney deliberately reject his songs in fear
that they were better than their own songs? I hate to believe that. 🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂🚶
