  • A Fallout 4 speculative/fanfic style video. In this video I explore the future of the Commonwealth in a Post-Institute world. This video touches on a future Commonwealth Government, early challenges faced by said government, and the Commonwealth Minutemen and Military forces. All of it made up of course.

      Oh no it’s not, since for at least 10 years after the war ended there was the very weak Articles of Confederation government which had to ask for states to pay it taxes. After the whiskey rebellion there was calls for a new stronger federal government and the constitution and United States government was eventually created.

The NCR didn’t come into some standstill, its military weren’t some cobbled up militia. The NCR was still a country, a major power. I usually use the BoS as the military and the Minutemen as the police. Using the military to crush the institute and railroad and keeping the Minutemen policing the settlements. I feel like this dynamic would lead to a better future for the Commonwealth.

    • @doubtitt
      @doubtitt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      This is pretty much the way I'd imagine the BOS would govern the Capital wasteland and its other territories.
      There is some autonomy amongst the towns/nations and they have their own small military force, but the BOS are the primary military force of the region. I was going to do a community post about it, but never got around to it.
      The reason why I didn't choose this for the Commonwealth is that I wanted them to retain their autonomy. If you are dependent on another power for your defense then you will be subject to their whims. I also think that many people in the Commonwealth would not be fond of the BOS's presence in the Commonwealth.
      I think this path is better for the Commonwealth in the long term, even if it means they will face more challenges along the way.

      It's funny because I prefer Institute-Minutemen playthroughs. So the comparison, at least directly applied, is a bit off in my case. I switch it around in turn: Institute I consider like background backers and special forces that only come in and topside if need be, otherwise they stay in the background. So for me, the Minutemen are more like the military and in certain settlements, I like to institute (no pun intended) sort of like actual police or security officers wearing similar police clothing.
      E: Just like for Vault 88, I use Vault Security instead of police.

    • @pmpowalisz

      well Arthur Maxson would have insisted that the Brotherhood of Steel be allowed to clear out any known camp of super mutants and feral ghouls in the Commonwealth and in return the government allows and assists (mostly information) with the procurement of advanced technology as well as allowing volunteer recruitment efforts into the Brotherhood of Steel. This would have happened as soon as the new government was created and would have meant that the Minuteman and militias would only have to deal with the raiders and wild life. See Arthur Maxson would have studied the western BOS chapters dealings with the NCR, and would have wanted to ensure that the people of the commonwealth felt no need for a central military. A civilian central government and organized militias are all well and good but a central military could prove too much a threat to Brotherhood of Steel interests. Honestly central militaries can be too costly for small nations anyways, and in the end it likely led the NCR into decline. There was real clues to this decline even in New Vegas, New Vegas coming out in the aftermath of the second Iraq war is no coincidence whatsoever for the writers of that game.

    Can i ask how the Railroad still exists after the institute is destroyed? What is it's goal?

    • @doubtitt
      @doubtitt  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      After the destruction of the Institute there was still a lot of synths around. The Railroad stayed around to help them either escape the Commonwealth or settle in it without anyone knowing of their past.
      It's important to remember that the Commonwealth is still very bigoted. Your average Commonwealth citizen isn't very fond of Synths, Ghouls, or other mutants. Thus Synths are still being persecuted by both, the Commonwealth people and by the government.
      The Railroad has also switched from an anti-Institute to a anti-Brotherhood sentiment. The Brotherhood continues their witch hunts in search of any surviving synths. Apart from keeping synths safe from the BOS, the Railroad also benefits from the anti-Brotherhood sentiment amongst the Commonwealth populace. Many people within the Commonwealth see the Brotherhood as foreign occupiers. Since at the moment the government is pursuing cooperation with the Brotherhood, the Railroad has been able to get some of the more hardline Commonwealth Nationalist on their side.
      Later on during the Railroad Rebellion the Railroad becomes the face of the Anti-War and Anti-Government movement making them more relevant that ever. My newest video explores the Railroad Rebellion a bit more if you're interested in learning more.

    You do know that out of all possible endings, the one with the Minutemen and both Brotherhood & Railroad alive seems to be the least likely canon, right?
    For example, Glory who is meant to die in every other route (even the RR's) can survive in that ending, and yet her fellow RR members will still speak as if she had died, even with her standing right next to them. Maxson will have no dialogues at all and I have heard people saying that Dr Li disappears from the game, among other things.
    Look, it's no secret that the MM are the Yes Man option of FO4, the failsafe or last resort to end the game if you ruin your relationship with the other factions, and their "main quest" definitely shows that, feeling quite rushed and minimalist.
    Also, the Minutemen is the one faction that can be fully irrelevant to the main plot, with their only additional interaction in any other faction's route being in the Institute's Pinned quest, where they are called to guard a scientists that the Institute wants to recruit. The worst part? If you haven't helped Preston & rebuilt the MM by that point in the Institute's questline, the Minutemen guarding the scientist are simply replaced by Gunners.
    On the other hand, the fact that Shaun also dies in every ending seemed like the perfect reason to justify the Sole Survivor depressing and choosing to go down the overboss route with the Nuka World raiders. Given the huge disparity in content with the Nuka World DLC between helping the raiders or killing them, I think it makes the most sense to assume that canonically the Sole Survivor did join the raiders and became overboss. Also, Far Harbor's "best" ending, peace between all 3 factions, basically comes down to pull out the same synth replacement tactic that the Institute is so much criticized for, with any other ending requiring to wipe out at least one faction.
    Plus, between Nuka World adding the raider outposts & vassal settlements options, and the vanilla game giving you the option to help settlements by yourself, no Minutemen involved and settlers thanking you directly, I think the impact of the MM faction can be quite minimal.
    Lastly, it's easy to put the blame for every bad thing that happens in the Commonwealth on the Institute, but let's not forget that a lot of the problems, even some which the Institute are blamed for, weren't actually their fault. Take the exile of ghouls from Diamond City for an instance. Leaving aside when McDonough was replaced (for starters personally I think it makes more sense to replace the winning candidate after he has already been elected), which could be worth its own discussion, the choose the exile of ghoul because the upper stand residents didn't like having them in the city and proposing their exile earned McDonough their support and in turn the position of Mayor.
    For all the talk about the Institute wiping out towns, the only one we actually know about was University Point, and they didn't just waltz in without warning and began killing everything: Kellogg gave them 2 days to turn over the data, and while the mayor wasn't sure Kellogg was from the Institute he did admit he looked like a dangerous man a and real threat, so he gave the situation the due importance by... waiting a day to call in a council meeting the following day, which ended with the decision to cast a vote... the next day, you know, when Kellogg's 2 day time limit expired... (sigh). Democracy in action!
    Also, from the internal email communications it seemed that fighting was about the breakout within the settlement (and I would even suspect it could have started out and that could have also triggered Kellogg to act in advance of the time limit expiring, in order to prevent the data from being lost in the infighting), with Kellogg's initial request to have the pre-war data turned in to him, twisted through gossip into Kellogg demanding that the girl whom found the data, Jacqueline, was also turned in (whom some settlers also began accusing of being a synth) and furthermore twisted into the Institute coming for all of the settlement's children and/or them having planted a nuke in town which will detonate if the settlement doesn't turn in their full harvest to the Institute, as can be read in the settlements email system. In one of the last emails, a friend of Gerald's (Jacquline's father) also warned him to leave town since their neighbors were about to turn on them.
    And among all this, Gerald was the one person most convinced that Kellogg was just a con man trying to get the data for free and therefore the person most against to giving him the data, which basically sealed the town's fate.
    Ironically, University Point is also used as an example of synths being used to wipe out towns and then scavenge them for resources, but that is in fact not the case: the presence of the synths there 2 years later is due to them unable to find the data the were after, which the SS can find and learn the painful truth: while the data was indeed about reactor, the research ultimately proved to be unsuitable for reactor development and instead diverted into weapons development, resulting in the unique laser pistol Prototype UP77, whose never ending legendary effect is canonically the result of this research.
    But I digress. In short, I just don't see a scenario where the MM can be the canonical ending to Fallout 4 (specially when factoring in NW and even FH), despite some people really liking them, some of which I assume are likely NCR fans whom wish they were the equivalent of the NCR on the east coast.

      1. Minutemen are the most likely. They are clearly Bethesda's favorite faction for FO4. You meet them first, you can join them regardless of who you side with, they are tied to the settlemnt system which was a huge selling point for FO4, and it keeps things open for the writers incase they want to revisit the region/factions in the future.
      2. Bethesda doesn't like to give canon endings so it doesn't matter anyways.
      3. I wasn't looking for the most likely to be cannon ending. I just wanted to write a cool story.

      @@doubtitt 1. Given how badly fleshed out they are, specially their main quest, they definitely don’t seem to be Bethesda’s favorite faction (which evidently is the BoS and not just in this game). The quest to help Preston is an optional side quest, to the point that Preston has unique dialogue if you wait to meet him until AFTER finishing the main quest. And as already mentioned, you can help settlements and build them up without ever joining the MM, again making them an optional aspect of settlement building, and with rather little impact: for comparison, NW’s raider outposts & vassal settlements provide significantly more different alternatives.
      2. As someone who always blows up the Citadel, that definitely doesn’t feel the case for me. In fact I think the FO4 BoS would make more sense as a result of that ending, losing both Elder Lyons and Sarah as a direct consequence and allowing the Outcasts to impose themselves over the remnants of Lyons group, leading to the formation of a BoS that refocus on the traditional ideals of the original faction.
      3. Fair enough, though again, for some people it is not different from imagining if the Master continued his plan, or either incarnation of the Enclave won. An interesting thought experiment, but that’s about it.

      How are you going to say "fair enough" after you completely missed the point lol. It's not a "thought experiment". It's just a story. You wouldn't look at something like Star Wars and go "Ah yes this is a nice thought experiment on how a world might develop if space wizards existed, but that's about it".
      Also, if you don't like it then just don't watch. This is a small corner of the internet, it's not like the content is being shoved in your face. Idk why you feel the need to take time out of your day to come here and be an ass.

      And now that the fallout show aired, we do know that the minutemen ending is off the table, because the Prydwen is still around.
      I don't even dislike the fan fiction idea you spun up here, but the minutemen ending doesn't seem to have any chance of being canon, unless we hear otherwise in the future, the brotherhood seems to be the most likely candidate.

      I chose a centralized democratic government for a couple of reasons.
      1. I want to draw a lot from US history and a non-centralized government would complicate that.
      2. It feels like the most natural evolution from the decentralized structure that the Minutemen have. The downfall of the Minutemen clearly showcase the weakness of a decentralized system.
      3. I'm biased and like the US gov system (for the most part anyways lol).
      Though I don't mean to portray it as perfect. As the story progresses I want to showcase the flaws and make critiques. Also I want to explore different factions through out Post-War North America all with their own form of government. Got some factions in mind like a Monarchist Canada, Syndicalist Colorado, Native American Inspired Nations in OK/TX and NY/PA, and a Mongol/Hun inspired faction somewhere in the Great Plains. Though most of these are still underdeveloped and will be a while till they are ready for their own video.
      Basically I want the Commonwealth's story to mirror that of the US and possibly use it to make some critiques of the system through story. Assuming my writing is good enough to do so effectively lol.

    You clearly know your way around civics and political science, however the Brotherhood of Steel would have played a larger role than you let on. Arthur Maxson would have insisted that the Brotherhood of Steel be allowed to clear out any known camp of super mutants and feral ghouls in the Commonwealth and in return the commwealth communities allows and assists (mostly information) with the procurement of advanced technology as well as allowing volunteer recruitment efforts into the Brotherhood of Steel. This would have started even before the new government was created and would have meant that the Minuteman and militias would only have to deal with the raiders and wild life. See Arthur Maxson would have studied the western BOS chapters dealings with the NCR, and would have wanted to ensure that the people of the commonwealth felt no need to create a central military. A civilian central government and organized militias are all well and good but a central military could prove too much a threat to Brotherhood of Steel interests in the region. Honestly central militaries can be too costly for small nations anyways, and in the end it likely led the NCR into decline. There was real clues to this decline even in New Vegas, which the New Vegas game coming out in the aftermath of the second Iraq war is no coincidence whatsoever for the writers of that game.

    • @doubtitt
      @doubtitt  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The system you describe is pretty much how the East Coast BOS operates within its own borders. However, the Commonwealth is different because of a couple of factors:
      1. Nate worked with the BOS so Maxson trust him and later his successor to not turn against the BOS.
      2. The Commonwealth people have a more anti-BOS stance which makes it more difficult for the BOS to gain influence over the Commonwealth people. Most are at the very least wary of the BOS. To the people the BOS are a foreign occupation force not a savior.
      3. The choice to create a proper military was done specifically to ensure the Commonwealth could remain independent. Later presidents like Gallows and Grant continued this approach by trying to stay on good terms with the BOS, but not giving up the nation's autonomy. This is pretty much the approach of most nations in our own world. It's good to have access to the protection and/or economy of a bigger power, but not at the cost of your own sovereignty.
      4. It's also important to consider the BOS's ability to maintain power in the Commonwealth and CW region. The distance is pretty significant considering the lack of infrastructure. If the BOS is focusing its efforts in the Commonwealth, then that leaves the CW exposed to attacks and vice versa. The BOS is strong at this point, but not that strong.
      5. Lastly, the East Coast BOS is different from the West Coast. The West Coast was close minded and small as an organization. The East Coast is the opposite. Maxson isn't worried about being severely outnumbered because unlike the West Coast, the East is constantly expanding. The Commonwealth is also pretty distant, so there isn't the same worry that they'll be able to launch an attack on the BOS capital. They just aren't in a vulnerable position like the West Coast BOS was.

    • @pmpowalisz
      @pmpowalisz 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The west coast is an even larger area than the east coast, and while the western Brotherhood of Steel chapters were much more isolationist in nature, they had well over a century to internally grow their numbers (there wouldn’t have been a East coast chapter otherwise). NCR President Tandy’s administration was on peaceful terms with the western Brotherhood of Steel chapters, but her successor served only one term before being voted out of office and replaced with a hawkish administration. The thing about democratic nations is that entire domestic and foreign policies can drastically change with the mood swings of the voting populations. Relations with the NCR and BOS eventually deteriorated into all out war with the BOS initially having the upper hand. However the BOS isolationist policies meant that they were unable to replace their losses, and the NCR eventually outnumbered them and gave them defeat after defeat (the BOS managed to destroy the NCR gold reserves though). Arthur Maxson would absolutely have that history in mind with his dealings with the commonwealth leadership. Sure a Commonwealth central military would be less threatening, but Elder Maxson would have no idea how capable the BOS leadership would be at the time (for one example), so it would be best to ensure that there is no Commonwealth central military for the Commonwealth to wage war against the BOS in the first place. When the BOS does its blitz campaign against the super mutants and feral ghoul concentrations, the BOS’s popularity within the commonwealth will soar. The true beauty of the BOS offering military protection for things well organized local militias can’t handle is that outside of advanced technology, voluntary recruitment, and possibly a reasonable tribute system (all would be far cheaper than having a central military), the BOS will have no interest in local governance, so the Commonwealth will have enough autonomy to satisfy the people and whatever civilian government they chose.

    • @doubtitt
      @doubtitt  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@pmpowalisz There's no beauty in being a subject to another state. It's also not true that the BOS has no interest in local governance. They are driven by ideology like any other faction and they won't allow their subjects to enact policies that will oppose their ideology.
      Your proposed arrangement only works if both sides are on board. In this timeline the Commonwealth is not. They prioritize their sovereignty. The only alternative for the BOS would be to wage war and while they might be successful in destroying the central government, in the end it would just result in an insurgency. They would have to somehow subjugate a people who despise them, have grown up in an extremely hostile environment, and one who just finished up a war against a more technologically advanced foe which resulted in increased morale for the people and also produced veterans who are not strangers to war.
      Now combine that with the fact the BOS would need to maintain a large presence in the region to maintain control, meanwhile, other factions in the wasteland expand their power. It also creates a major vulnerability for the BOS. If a faction like the Enclave wants to weaken the BOS, then they could start a proxy war in the region. This would pretty much result in something similar to what happened with the NCR. The BOS would be expanding too quickly and it would quickly find it made a major mistake by getting into a conflict it could not win quickly.
      The cost would be too high for the BOS.

    • @pmpowalisz
      @pmpowalisz 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@doubtitt the beauty is that the Brotherhood of Steel is NOT a state, nor will it likely ever be one. It is a techno religious/militant order that takes no instructions from any upper hierarchy, and there is literally no historical comparison to the BOS (even if you take out the techno bit). I did not say the Brotherhood of Steel would not have any interest in local governance. I said there would be no interest in local governance OUTSIDE of advanced technology, voluntary recruitment, and a possible reasonable tribute system. The BOS specific ideology that Elder Maxson himself has spouted would guarantee this great amount of autonomy for local communities and whatever government they chose. So the sole survivor destroys the Institute with the Minuteman (they are my preferred faction to side with too, because I don’t want to destroy the Railroad). There are still a bunch of super mutant and feral ghoul threats across the Commonwealth that the Brotherhood of Steel will wipe out (on principle alone) and therefore generate a lot of good will among the people of the Commonwealth, including the Minuteman. So much good will that they will have no problem in accepting the military protection arrangement that I mentioned above (for as I said it would be far cheaper than creating and maintaining a central military). Once the things have calmed down and stabilized in the Commonwealth the BOS wouldn’t need to keep a large force there, anymore than they needed to in the Capital region. It is also worth mentioning that in the show, the LA BOS chapter Elder in his speech has said that “these orders have come from the highest clerics in the Commonwealth” (this is on top of the fact that there was a giant Pryden like airship).

    My main character who is a raider overboss never completed the main mission. This is because she does not care about her child she after all was planning to "late-term abort" (and her husband) before the bombs dropped. At any rate, after being freed from mediocrity by nuclear war, her only misson is to enslave the world under her rule, using the raiders as her main instruments. She found that the Bos and the Institute cancel each other out, so after destroying the railroad and making sure the minutemen never got any power, all is well. Everything is effectively enslaved, yet the silly Bos and institute continue fighting each other. She is however worried that the BoS will eventually leave or win, so she is focusing on developing and harvesting nuclear weapons from the nuclear zones. Her plan to nuke the BoS using mind controlled slaves and mininukes might work on on them, but the institute will require other means. Still, she is currently safe, due to the BoS being unable to work with the Institute to take her out. Surely, bigotry is her best ally.

    • @RingworldTyrant
      @RingworldTyrant 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      His depiction of conservatism vs. progressivism is extremely accurate given the context of the political developments in this lore he's creating. "Conservative" and "Progressive" do not explicitly and exclusively refer to the modern American Republican or Democratic parties.
      Also, historically in the US's history, liberalism in general was a highly nationalistic, modern, militaristic, and progressive force, from 1776 to as late as post-World War II, so this depiction being created is more parallel to real world history than you may realize. You especially see these tendencies during the 1800s in US history, as the US expanded westward, fought the Mexican-American War, and then conquered the frontier post-Civil War. All of that expansion was justified ideologically from a framework of progressive liberalism.
