@AT Productions It's not about being grossed out. It's about the nuance of character design. To give a more in-depth explanation than just "it's shit," let me break it down. Why does Mythra have a chest window? Why does she wear a skirt so short that bending over even a little would expose her panties? Mythra's personality in-game makes it abundantly clear that she does not care for other people ogling her, even doing the tired anime cliche of beating up the male protag over a misunderstanding that makes him "seem like a pervert." Despite that, her outfit makes almost no attempt to cover any of her "sensitive" areas. It's cheap fanservice purely for the sake of it. To be clear: there is nothing wrong with characters being sexy or showing skin. There are even other characters in the game I think are fine having revealing outfits (Brighid being one because she still manages to come off as classy and refined.) Hell even Pyrrha having an open back never bothered me that much because she's not the sort of person who seems like she'd get easily upset at people eyeing her, at least not to the extent of Mythra. Yes, it's true that the West has a tendency to censor things far more than it should, and that is an issue unto itself, but I feel like this is an issue where every instance should be looked at on its own rather than just generalizing everything into a single mindset. Case and point: yes Mythra's outfit was censored, but in this particular case, it resulted in an overall better design for the character that doesn't come off as cheap sexualization just for the sake of it. You can have fanservice and still execute it in a way that doesn't diminish the character or the story.
My favorite bit of self-censorship is when people who make MK Fatality and Brutality compilation videos and, specifically for MK X and 11, always use the bug character Dvora because she bleeds blue blood, so therefore it's completely fine by TH-cam bot standards. You can see the terrifyingly accurate recreation of human anatomy in high-definition 4K, but it can only be in blue, the kids won't get scarred that way.
This is reason the Show Samurai Jack got made because all the Violence was Against Robots or Insects with green blood other wise it would of never existed.
Don’t understand why they’d add those ridiculous filters onto the manhunt 2 death scenes. They made them more disturbing and violent in my opinion lol.
Honestly that's also a genuinely smart way to "censor" it, it mostly removes the violent animations in order to be accepted by whatever higher up was requesting it, but it doesn't necessarily take away from the game's experience, it oddly fits the games aesthetic too, the idea of completely messing up the camera and have random seizure inducing effects on screen to hide the horror is something that fits right into the game. Pretty neat stuff.

Bolt if you see this, I want you to know... God of War is an action-adventure game franchise created by David Jaffe at Sony's Santa Monica Studio. It began in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) video game console and has become a flagship series for PlayStation, consisting of nine installments across multiple platforms. Based on ancient mythologies, the story follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior and later the Greek God of War, who was tricked into killing his family by his former master, the original Greek God of War Ares. This sets off a series of events that leads to wars with the different mythological pantheons. The Greek-based games see Kratos follow a path of vengeance due to the machinations of the Olympian gods, while the Norse-based games, which introduce his son Atreus as a secondary protagonist, show Kratos on a path of redemption and inadvertently coming into conflict with the Norse gods.
You actually missed a detail in Shadow the Hedgehog being censored. I’m the opening movie, a GUN Soldier was hit by a laser blast from the Black Arms. He simply gets knocked down and it’s short, but they cut this shot from the game completely!
In super smash bros ultimate there’s a lot of other subtle censorship with the spirits for non-sexual reasons (Dracula’s cape doesn’t drip blood, a few characters have changed symbols on their clothes, etc.)
A lot of people probably know about this already, but Smash Bros for 3DS had a trophy of Tharja from Fire Emblem in the game. It was present in the ESRB leak of the game, but it was removed from the retail release cuz it was a bit too hot for an E10 rating

About that scene with Shadow the Hedgehog where Maria’s lifeless body was shown falling: there also is a still image of that scene that was used in the game itself, but it was slightly blurred and had most of its original color pallet changed to black & white. It plays during a cutscene where shadow is on the ARK and is remembering what happened to Maria. There were also rumors that the Japanese version had the original scene left in tact, but as of now nobody has ever actually shown proof outside of the original trailer version filmed with a camcorder pointed at a TV screen, so it’s likely it was cut from the Japanese version as well.

I honestly think the best handling of video game censorship is with terraria, in its Chinese version. If you dont know, alot of the games bosses and enemies have elements of "blood and gore" integral to the design, such as the Eye of Chuthulu, a floating eyeball that grows teeth. To be released in China, the game had to have all of these elements removed, so instead of just covering it up they made a completely different design for everything, for example the eye was turned into a grassy snapper like creature, essentially make a different, but still good experience.
The best censorship was the one in South Park Stick of Truth where they just the banned scenes with a sad koala for Australia (I made this comment before watching)
I recommend playing shadow the hedgehog in japan since it's much better in terms of how much its better remember some cutscene like "where is that damn forth chaos emerald?" is like in japan " where is that emerald?" and some stuff in japan version is basically just better
I recommend not playing Shadow the Hedgehog at all because it's a shit game and the core issues with its story and structure don't change all of a sudden when the language is different.

I mean, I don't think it counts as much as other entries in this video since it was purely to appease the ESRB and updated CERO standards by the time the game was getting ported to PSP. Pretty sure they were doing the bare minimum to skirt by so that it would still be obvious to anyone with a brain, lol
That's more of a Japanese problem, because the Rating system on Japan states that games can't have real life persons or else the rating will go up, so they just gave him sunglasses and called him "Führer" instead of Hitler
I think the filters in the manhunt games during the executions make them look more terrifying and violent tbh
I love how in the eastern Kirby box art, he's all happy, while in the western box art, he's pissed as fuk.
Currently, about 6% of all steam games are unavailable in germany, specifically those involving nudity or sexual content, because steam just had enough of german officials bothering them.
Imagine how much bigger that percentage is if you remove all of the shovelware...
Damn they are missing out on classics like hentai sniper middle east or mein waifu is the führer
6:08 Carmageddon actually used robots in Germany like the other games you mentioned, while the green-blooded zombies were from another censored version that other regions had.
Yes, a game that was already censored had to be censored again.
oops
Honestly, i think the cork guns in the american version of Mario Party 2 are loads better than the real ones in the JP version. It just makes Bowser's "death" scene a lot funnier.
15:24 I love how it sounds like he’s resisting the urge to burst out laughing
Ayye! Happy to see DiamondBolt back at it! Keep it up, bud!
Interestingly, the "hasn't had his coffee yet" is still fitting for him being drunk, since coffee is commonly something some people use to try to sober up after drinking. I'm pretty sure they chose that line specifically because it still subtextually insinuates the guy is drunk while keeping plausible deniability if the esrb call them out on it.
I think at least one of the earlier games had some censored nudity; not sure if the sex minigame would've been cut as well.
Isn't Jaffe the guy who was wrong about Metroid Dread?
@@theonlybilge yes
A sequel needed, they changed so much throughout Pokemon it’s unreal.
W video as always. You are such an awesome creator and the quality of your videos make the experience even better
You actually missed a detail in Shadow the Hedgehog being censored. I’m the opening movie, a GUN Soldier was hit by a laser blast from the Black Arms. He simply gets knocked down and it’s short, but they cut this shot from the game completely!
Not to mention The Black Arms also had more realistic blood when attacked in earlier builds of the game.
the ocarina of time chanting can still be heard in a single room of the fire temple
In super smash bros ultimate there’s a lot of other subtle censorship with the spirits for non-sexual reasons (Dracula’s cape doesn’t drip blood, a few characters have changed symbols on their clothes, etc.)
Hey diamondbolt, you probably won’t see this but just wanted to say i’m a huge fan and hope you’ll make videos forever!
A lot of people probably know about this already, but Smash Bros for 3DS had a trophy of Tharja from Fire Emblem in the game. It was present in the ESRB leak of the game, but it was removed from the retail release cuz it was a bit too hot for an E10 rating

Your videos are so good! I love them, you cover so many interesting topics and stuff from my childhood, you’ve become one of my favourite TH-camrs
I know you probably won’t see this, but an interesting topic would be lost media that’s been recovered, the original footage for shrek is so cool to see. You don’t have to cover this topic but I just thought it was interesting ( I get it, wanna work on something your interested in) 😊
Keep up the great work!!
Diamondbolt 100% needs more attention on TH-cam, his videos are so entertaining and deserve more publicity
SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG in the thumbnail?!?!? Big stonks
i’m from the US but moved to Belgium in grade school and really liked Probotector. when i moved back, no one would believe that I played a robot version of Contra.
Nothing gives me an adrenaline rush quite like seeing dimondbolt upload a new video!
It’s funny how Shadow the Hedgehog has the 4kids people in it, with very visible guns and basically evil alien Satan
It's one of maybe 2 or 3 4kids productions I can think of that are like that since there was short lived uncut dubs from 4kids for Yu-Gi-Oh and Shaman King that left in stuff like religious imagery and guns
@@lssjgaming1599 and dead people!
The voice actors they hired are not indicative of the company themselves. So i'm not sure I understand the point of comparison. Also the canon explanation of that it's not even a real gun, it just looks like one. And "basically" doesn't mean it is Satan or that it carried any commutations of satanism. Literally all parts of your statement fall apart at the seams.
@@the-NightStar I just like the juxtaposition
I'm pretty sure the cast is the only way that 4Kids was involved.
“Your man’s kinda cute”
“SKANK”
I don't think Mario raising his LEFT arm is that much of a problem... (2:06)
TTYD has symmetrical characters, when Mario faces the other way he uses his right hand.
Maybe a small addition, I'm a big fan of how you include the music tracks in the description. It's a small thing but really helpful.
9:45 This one is perfect
the Danganronpa games censored blood by making it a very bright pink, but in this case it worked so well that it became a staple of the series
You forgot it's canonically red
@@isauldron4337 well duh, I´m saying they made it pink for censorship but ended up keeping it because it became a Danganronpa thing
11:21 I was playing watch dogs 2 earlier today and can confirm that they did not remove all of the nudity.
"Babe, wake up new DiamondBolt video!!"
Great vid! Kinda surprised to not see any of the numerous censorships in Earthbound, those could pretty much have their own video lol
1:18 man do I have a Scott the Woz for you
Censership in GENARAL sucks so much it’s actually terrifying
5:15 I know it’s horrible but it’s so funny- A diamondbolt video review
In Digimon Story, Sistermon and Sistermon Noir had their designs altered in the western release to make them look less like nuns, for example, the hat being changed to resemble animal ears
"Hopefully, if i still have a channel by then"
Man, you are really good at avoiding the ban hammer!
8:52 *insert Mandatory Joseph Joestar "meme" here*
Early here and happy to see this video about protecting the children.
The worst form of video game censorship was when hearthstone censored the secret keeper’s dump truck. twas all down hill from there
Huh, how very interesting, I wonder what kind of Censorship we’ll get next?
Hopefully, they make more sense than some of these, but that’s doubtful.
I thought the Birdo thing was a translation error where in the original game to mario there was a name mix up and Birdo gender got mixed in translation cause of it but instead of fixing the text they just added extra text of saying “He thinks he’s a girl” instead of just fixing it back to that she was a girl
There was also a mistranslation for Pokemon X and Y with the Beauty in Lumiose City the one you battle.
@@FTChomp9980 is that the lady who says “I used to be a black belt until i had kids. Now look at me” (something like that) then people decided she was trans cause there have been no female black belts in pokemon? (Dumb reason to decide if a person is trans)
@@namecomingsoon9517 No, that character IS straight up trans. In the japanese version she goes "isn't the power of medical science amazing?"

What?
Will you review all the original, prequel, and sequel Star Wars movies, I'd love to see your reaction to the movies and, of course, review.
you probably already knew this but someone did a re-edit of sonic nazo unleashed with a fully voiced cast with a few dialogue tweaks. There's also a stickfigure one which adds a ton more fight scenes.
The best censorship was the one in South Park Stick of Truth where they just the banned scenes with a sad koala for Australia
(I made this comment before watching)
There was also one with a facepalming statue and both described what was banned
@@xavierhartley5082that one only in Europe
I recommend playing shadow the hedgehog in japan since it's much better in terms of how much its better remember some cutscene like "where is that damn forth chaos emerald?" is like in japan " where is that emerald?" and some stuff in japan version is basically just better
That's not better.
I recommend not playing Shadow the Hedgehog at all because it's a shit game and the core issues with its story and structure don't change all of a sudden when the language is different.
@@the-NightStar remember shadow the hedgehog was way worse in the US version tbh even in other games they ruined some cutscenes with their dub
7:40 you forgot to mention the absolutely genius idea of changing his name to "Heiler"
Hit Heiler
The one VG censorship outside of smash that I remember the most is how they removed the breast slide in the character costumisation for the non Japanese version of Xenoblade chronicles x (they also edited some of the outfit and/or changed the age of the character Lin)
Babe wake up diamond bolt uploaded
Mortal kombat without blood is like snoop dogg without weed
Mario puting his arm up made me question what Mario has been doing in between games
Manhunt 2 violence: **BANNED**
God of War violence: **Safe**
The Ocarina of Time one is so funny to an arab like me, just because I'm imagining some poor japanese developers not having a clue what they thought was stock bg chanting was actually a Quran reading. Didn't Xbox also do this but then KEEP the Quran verse in btw?
Yeah, if it was actual Arabs and Muslims complaining it had been one thing... But instead it was some non-Muslim Americans who did it..!
@@TeruteruBozusama ... Having Quran readings interrupted by anything like music or games is highly offensive, I should know since my whole family is Muslim

So about those stories where Pokemon used to marry humans...
yep
I liked the censored bowser more than the origenal victory pose ngl
It genuinely scares me that he did not *ONCE* bring up any of Dragon quests “Puff Puff” scenes when talking about censorship
Best way to make it past censorship with bloody scenes, change the color of the blood! Works every time, just ask Osmosis Jones!
Video game censorship will always be funny with how they change things and what exactly gets changed.
5:09 this is a Western thing look the Advance wars like game War Groove had a Patch that changed it of you fight the Dog Units they just Run away instead when defeated. The 80s arcade gane Narc which you play as cops blowing up dealers to gory chunks does the same thing with the Dogs and this was pre Mortal Kombat
Narc was the one where the talking leg says "I GIVE UP!", right?
not sure what version of the Yu-Gi-Oh! game in English that I played, I remembered the art for the cards are the original uncensored Japanese versions instead of censored art of the cards for the US markets.
Most games in that series world USE Edited US art worldwide. But if the art was Changed for the West altogether Japanese version use Japanese oroginal.
Some games in the "Duel Stories" series of games use the Japanese card art for all regions. Games like Forbidden Memories and Sacred Cards.
Yeah, cardart-related things were very inconsistent in videogames back then with some JP-releases using US-art and the other way around. The funniest thing is the JP Ring of Destruction being present in the english only The Eternal Duelist Soul and they mis-named it as "Bell of Destruction" for some reason.
6:06 sound effect?
If they say that we can marry Pokémon, then I’m marrying Wooper.
5:23 thats hilarious
I'm surprised terraria didn't get brought up in the gore/violence censorship considering every boss and a bunch of enemies got redesigned for the chinese release
I was playing flash tboi and not only did the bomb sound censor shadow saying damn, but when the game over music played at 9:01. Also if you make a sequel, please talk about what the binding of isaac claimed to change due to religion when nintendo offered the game to be ported to nintendo consoles.
In the Ace Attorney series, despite the fact it’s mostly about solving murders, references to alcohol are censored like wine being turned into grape juice.
The thing is South Park is already rated R in Australia so they don’t really have to censor it
Because Austrailian censorship is Hella strict.
