Don't apologize for the rant. You were saying what all of us were thinking. And it sounds like I need to upgrade my Magic Lantern. That T3i can shoot raw now is excellent news. Now that if they could get rid of the audio auto gain...

Yeah, I work at Best Buy and we got notification that all T4i cameras were on recall because a few of the bodies had issues with the rubber grip rubbing off. They had been getting into some lawsuits from people who were having allergic reactions to the powder-like rubber residue. I haven't been allowed to sell a T4i for a few months now.

I do not get to Your (or anyone elses) videos necessary quickly, but I do usually get to them. This video is exactly why I subscribe to Yours. Telling it like it really is, not being afraid to do so in fear of loosing whatever, is what I want (and expect) even if I don't like hearing it initially. However, I've learned a whole buncha lotta mostly, so TY for that.

Rumor has it the reason for such similar cameras was lenses: Canon had to rush in and release the T4i without a "video-friendly" 18-55mm STM kit lens (the only lens in this category at the time was the 18-135mm STM). So, after coming up with the renewed kit lens, plus some factory recalls regarding the T4i's focus system, it was decided to release a "new" model alongside it.

I just brought a used 650d (3000 actuations, hardly worn in!) I'm on a very tight budget and it was the first of the cameras I'd chosen as contenders (60d 650d 700d) that came up for sale within my budget. Also got a nice Canon 17-85mm f4-f5.6 if is lens with it, too.
Your reviews were really helpful in that they showed me there's more that's the same on these cameras than is different. I really was glad to get the only one with a touchscreen. I wasn't married to wanting it, but now I have it in my hands it is self evident how much more useful it is.
650d is the winner in my books, simply for the touchscreen. Although initially it was a tough choice between that and the 60d for it's longer burst before the shutter lag kicks in, I came down on the side of the touchscreen. If you wanted to shoot more active subjects (especially things like skateboards or bikes doing tricks at the local ramp, track or or park,) then the 60d would be a smarter choice overall. You can't put much between them in image quality.
First thing I did when I got the camera delivered at home was not pack up and go out shooting. I got online, googled Magic Lantern, watched a few videos on how to install it and how to use it, read no horror stories at all about it because I couldn't find any, then I made all my SD cards bootable and put ML on all of them. The quality of images the hardware provides and the added features Magic Lantern brought to capturing those images means for $500 I have a camera I'm going to spend a long time getting better on before I outgrow it. I just hope touchscreen comes to full frame before my next upgrade!

The T4i hasn't only been discontinued, but rather recalled. There was a small design flaw in the rubber grips when Canon upgraded this model from the T3i. It seems as thought the rubber grips in the T4i would turn white after a while and cause some minor skin irritation in the hands of the users. I have been lead to believe that the reason for the change to a T5i is mainly because of the new rubber pads. This is why the two cameras are mechanically identical. However, they had to change the rotational dial and make some VERY small software changes in the menu system to justify calling it a T5i.

    • @mateopumakawa

If I remember correctly, the rubber problem of the T4i was corrected before the switch to T5i.

Thanks for your review of the Canon T5i DSLR vs. the Canon T4i DSLR. Your review helped me to decide which DSLR camera to upgrade to. I bought the Canon T5i with the EF-S 18-55mm/f1:3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, and also bought the EF-S 55-250mm/f1:4-5.6 IS STM lens yesterday. BTW, the mode dial is a helpful innovation, at least, for me. I also immediately researched Magic Lantern and installed it to my new T5i, just gotta figure it out. Thanks, again!

The only "problem" with that is what your goal is. I do stills, not just video, so the Canon Rebels work for me. The BMPCC is a great camera though from what I can see. But there is still a huge crop factor on that device. If anything, I'm going to save up and get a Mark III.

Well, I am looking for a first DSLR, i was using Canon S5IS with CHDK and developed raw from it and learned how to improve my bad taken shots. But pursuing my new DSLR I was sure that Nikon D7100 will be my first one. After watching some other videos about 650D I started to change my mind but this fantastic video convinced me that 650D will be my first DSLR. Thank you very much. Of course, Magic lantern part totally left me speechless.

I have both /between T5i and the d7100 / d7100 is the best and sharpest IMAGE even sharper better than the new d7200 ( d7200 design for fast moving sport / not for sharpness ).............do very little sport shooting so I STICK WITH d7100 for SHARPNESS / canon are good for color like very color full flower (IMAGE NOT AS SHARP AS D7100 so I HAVE BOTH SHOOTING AT EVENT OR PARTY )

Hi Dave, I don't have any links, but I can confirm that there was an issue with the glue and the rubber of the grip reacting for some batches of T4i. Basically the glue was safe, the rubber was safe, but when combined, they formed a chemical that some people are allergic to. It does seem like Canon used this as an excuse to upgrade to the T5i with the new mode dial, and a new kit lens. I don't think the T5i is intended as an upgrade, unless you're allergic to your T4i :)

They have about equal dynamic range, but that's not because of the 12-bit or 14-bit color.
The 12- or 14- bits only refers to the number of different colors the picture can be made of.

Why did Canon discontinue the T4i when some people prefer it to the 700d ?

  •  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Dave, thank you for your enlightening information between this 2 cameras. I am trying to get information because I want to upgrade from Canon Powershot SX30 to DSLR. Right now is T4i is more expensive and less available than T5i, Why?, Has t5i less quality? according to you they are almost equal, but why buyers are after T4i than T5i. Please help me, your opinion is very important in deciding in which one to buy.

They are nice, but I would suggest the 18-135mm STM lens that you can get with the camera. I have it with the t4i. The auto focus is silent. I put my shotgun mic next to it and racked focus with out any noise at all. Both are great, but I would suggest the 18-135mm.

I Disagree with you big time Dave - re the dial turning all the way round. I have been after a 650D, or, and pref, a 700D for a while and been scouring e-bay. I favoured the 700 but saw a good deal on a 650D with handgrip and 4 batteries for a good price so bought that.
I oft shoot in high dynamic scenes so will oft want to switch from Aperture priority to backlit HDR mode. Now if you're just doing that a handful of times no problems but when you're doing it quite a few times during a full days shooting the dial not turning all the way round becomes quite a pain in the @r5e as the settings are pretty much at the extremes of the dial I defo wish I had the 700 :(

I also heared that. Some problems with the rubber becomming white over time. They had such problems also on some older models. I totally agree with you Dave, Canon has to get their act togheter. The 18mpx sensor is a dinosaur. Hybrid CMOS sensor, puh.. I cant help it, but I kinda dont like the newer canon models. There is something sluggish about them. Dont misunderstand me, they are faster, but they feel a bit cheaper than they used to do.

The way I understand it is that the 700D is a complete replacement for the 650D - they are the same camera, but issues people were having with the 650D have been fixed. That's why it has been discontinued. A comparison of the 70D and 60D will probably show a ton more innovation, especially since it has been years since the 60D came out, rather than the 9 month gap between the 650D and the 700D.

FYI, $200M in R&D cost is not that much for a company the size of Canon. Let me give you some breakdown on the costs of bringing up a product:
    1. Wafer Mask Set -- $5M per set, not accounting for revisions (to improve performance and yield)
    2. Sensor package (ceramic, HiTCE) -- $300k
    3. Qualification costs -- $500k
This is just for the image sensor alone; if you factor in the rest of the camera, costs add up quickly. My source: me (I'm a Product/Packaging Engineer in the semiconductor ind)

But keep in mind that these cameras consumer cameras. More and more people want to DSLR, and can afford these types of cameras. For instance, I never use photo RAW mode on my 600D. I don't need to shoot pictures in Raw mode. Perhaps they did a survey, and found out that most customers (not pros) don't use raw.
I do however like to film in Raw mode. :)

when this video came out they probably didn't announce that t4i got recalled because grip caused allergy reaction at some people and that is why they came out with t5i which is actually t4i just with a different grip material :)
    Still love his videos :)

Good video Dave, I agree with the rant to a point. You say magic lantern has cracked the video RAW for either of the 2 cameras (650D & 700D) if so where is it? As a 650D user I have been on magic lantern site oncea week looking fot ML for the 650D, it still aint been released or if it is it aint on there site.

I was wandering what your opinions on the 18-55mm STM kit lens are. You didn't seem to mention it in this review.....?

I think they only changed the model number because they bundled it with the new 18-55 stm lens. They needed a way to differentiate the model. That's my opinion :)

Thanks for another great video! Everyone who knows your videos knows that it must take a lot to get you ranting! My T1i just broke and I will want to buy a new camera, but it's a bit sad to see where Canon is going right now and if they don't bring out a game changing 70D or 7D II soon, they might lose me despite all the money I put into lenses. The only thing that is a selling argument right now is (as you point out) Magic Lantern! Whatever, keep up the good work Dave!

Very good observation Mr. Dugdale. Thanks for the info. Do you have a training guide on the 5D MarkIII with the new update or the magic lantern software?

to me the T5i has improved video capabilities over the T4i. when I compare their videos the t5i seems very different. although personally I prefer the t4i video colors than the t5i, I could see how people would really like the t5i video for vlogging as it's very realistic and good lighting
